Kaipara pink ribbon events

p Veteran firefighter Gary Murdoch was recently presented with the Queen’s Service Medal by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for his services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the community. Mr Murdoch has been involved with the Volunteer Fire Brigade for 52 years and was one of eight firefighters from around the country to be presented with a QSM. “I was a little bit nervous during the ceremony,” he said. “But Jacinda Ardern put us quite at ease.” These days Mr Murdoch is no longer on the front line and helps out around the station doing small but important tasks.

The Million Metres Streams Project is spearheading the fundraising campaign and aims to raise $60,000 by December. “We are excited to be involved in a project of this scale,” said project coordinator, Alaina Pomeroy. Funds raised by Million Metres will go into coordinating the planting, monitoring the plants and the health

of the harbour. The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group, Te Arai Native Nursery and Reconnecting Northland will provide 100,000 native plants a year for the project. IKHMG programme manager, William Wright, says the project plan is for a period of five years with planting commencing in 2019.

“Seven hundred thousand tonnes of sediment falls on the Kaipara Harbour floor every year. We are trying to reduce sedimentation as quickly as possible. It will take generations to bring the state of the harbour back to some resemblance of what we had 50 years ago or how it was prior to deforestation. continued on page 3 …
