p Dargaville Library is reopening to customers between the hours of 10am and 1pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays for book borrowing only. Those more than 70 years old will be given priority access. “Our focus is keeping our customers and the team safe. So, we will be limiting the number of people in the library at any one time, and the computers won’t be available at this stage,” say Dargaville’s librarians. “We are a public space, so we must follow the government guidelines with regards to contact tracing. A click and collect or ring and request service was put in place to enable people to get fresh reading material without accessing the library. That service will continue to be available exactly as it is now.” Almost 2,500 books were returned during a four-day period and getting them processed and reshelved had a huge impact on the staff’s ability to reopen the library to the public. There are still more than 4,000 items checked out to customers so the team is taking the reopening in slowly and in stages to ensure they can deal with these volumes. The librarians say that they appreciate people’s patience and understanding during this time.
Kaipara opposition to landfill ramps up by Paul Campbell
Opposition to the proposed Dome Valley landfill for Auckland’s rubbish, seen as a major environmental threat and danger to waterways and the Kaipara Harbour, has been stepped up with accusations of ‘dirty deals’ on the part of Auckland Council, as submissions against the tip closed this week.

The dump for Waste Management Ltd would be sited within an area of 1,000 hectares in Dome Valley, encompassing the Hoteo River watershed, which flows into the harbour. It has been strongly opposed by Fight the Tip, a protest group of area locals supported by local politicians and community leaders.
Now Ngati Whatua, the iwi covering an area from Hokianga to Auckland City has thrown its weight behind Fight the Tip, accusing Auckland Council of calling submissions online under cover of the Covid-19 lockdown. “We find it abhorrent that the local government has been pushing resource
consents under the guise of Covid-19,” said Ngati Whatua CEO, Alan Riwaka. “Council should halt this process and at a minimum extend the consultation period to ensure fair and equitable participation from our community.” continued on page …
