Mayor Gent said the former commissioners and then the recently terminated Crown Manager, Peter Winder, had been dealing with the case against Mr McKerchar.

“Currently we have no Crown Manager so the responsibility falls back to council.

Councillors are yet to discuss the matter but the feedback I have had from those I have spoken to is that it is unlikely we would pursue matters further.

“It’s a chapter in the history of Kaipara that we all want to move on from.”

In late 2014 the governmentappointed commissioners initiated action in the Employment Relations Authority against Mr McKerchar seeking damages for alleged breaches of his responsibilities.

Mr McKerchar responded by counterclaiming for damages as a result of the council allegedly breaching the

terms of an August 2011 termination settlement agreement by disclosing its terms to third parties.

Council lawyers had asked the court to determine as a preliminary matter whether the settlement agreement was a bar to its claims, and both parties had applied to the Employment Court to strike the other parties action out prior to the substantive cases being heard by the Employment Relations Authority.

Chief Judge Colgan has ruled that KDC’s claim against Mr McKerchar is struck out because it breached the terms in the 2011 settlement agreement. Mr McKerchar’s claim against KDC was also struck out because the Employment Relations Authority or the Employment Court did not have jurisdiction to hear the claim.

He reserved his decision on costs. ¢

Senior Whangarei Black Power gang member Walter Reid Ngaau was arrested in Tinopai in relation to a Northland homicide investigation last week.

He was then charged the following morning with murder and two counts of wounding with intent in relation to the investigation of the murder of John Henry Harris in October 2016.

The 54-year-old man was located during an operation where police carried out simultaneous search warrants in Tinopai, where methamphetamine chemicals and equipment were located, and in Dargaville where a methamphetamine lab was in operation.

Biocontrol (biological control) is the use of naturally occurring predators and diseases to control pests and weeds. Once introduced to an area, and when sustainable populations have established they will carry on working against the target indefinitely.

A new hockey team at Dargaville High School is giving first time players the opportunity to compete against similar skilled teams in the collegiate hockey competition.

Bev Hart and Doug Passmore from Dargaville recently represented New Zealand in the 2017 hockey Trans Tasman Masters Challenge trophy against Australia.

It’s been awhile since Dargaville High School had a hockey team but the newly formed mixed collegiate team has started the season on a strong note.

Team manager and DHS teacher Christine Taylor said even though the majority of students were playing the sport for the first time they were doing well.

“From the school’s perspective we think it’s really cool and exciting to see,” she said.

Coach Maribeth Wood said training has been underway since the term one school holidays.

“Our first two weeks in the competition were grading games and last week was our first proper game.

The team is going really well even though we lost 1-nil it was a really even game and everyone is coming along in leaps and bounds. It’s nice for these guys to get the chance to do something that hasn’t been available for a long time,” “There’s only three people in this team that have played before. It’s not the easiest sport to pick up so they are doing really well.”

The competition means that they can include team members from the surrounding area and the team has since recruited a Ruawai College student.

The team travels to Whangarei every Monday night for games and trains every Thursday. ¢

Bev was the only Northland player to make the New Zealand’s 60+ women’s team in the Whangarei competition while Doug acted as medic for the men’s 40+ team.

In total 13 teams from each country competed in the event and each played three games against their counterpart with all points contributing towards the overall Challenge trophy.

“It’s the first year I’ve played. I was selected through trials held in Auckland back in November last year. People came up from Dunedin and Timaru for it — I was the only player from Northland that got into the team,” said Bev. The 60+ women’s team won two out of the three games securing a gold medal for their win however the New Zealanders fell short overall losing the Challenge trophy by six points.

“A highlight was singing the national anthems on the main Kensington turf at the stadium before our last game.

It was an amazing and quite humbling experience to be a little fish in a big pond,” she said.

A young Maungaturoto netballer was at the heart of the action at last Wednesday’s ANZ Premiership match in Auckland after winning the chance to stand side-by-side with Stars captain Leana De Bruin and Mystics captain Maria Tutaia in front of a stadium of fans.

Cassidy Allen, 14, along with Highland Park netballer, Breanna Hanlon-Judd, 11, won the opportunity to meet the team captains and high five each of the players as they were called onto centre court at the start of the match, through the ANZ Future Captain’s competition.

Cassidy who attends Otamatea High School was happy before the game and excited to meet her heroes and watch them play.

“My favourite part was high fiving the team and it was good meeting the captains. The netballers were really

good at lots of things and I learnt about moving into the right spaces,” she said. ANZ head of sponsorship Susan McGregor says the bank is passionate about supporting netball at every level, from the elite to the grassroots.

“We’re very pleased we’re able to offer this amazing opportunity to young Kiwis and hope that by offering them the chance to stand on centre court with their heroes it will help inspire them to achieve their dreams” says Ms McGregor.

Student’s gift a winner u by Joanna Manson

Greenways Trust in Dargaville are the proud new owners of a swing thanks to the 2016 year 9–10 Japanese class at Dargaville High School who donated money towards the new attraction.

The students donated $100 from fundraising efforts allowing ‘house one’ of the trust, which provides housing for those with intellectual disabilities, to build a swing.

“At the end of last year we did some fundraising and part of that money was given back to the local community. Our project was to research for our 2018 Japan trip with fundraising going to Greenways,” said Japanese teacher, Corine Leach.

The students handmade and sold over 300 containers of sushi as part of their project.

The big swing has been a highlight for residents.

Student Tamsin Underwood said “it’s really cool to see the residents appreciate it.”

Resident Jeremy Forster said he loved the swing and was on it most mornings and weekends although he has to move quickly to beat fellow resident and keen swinger Katy to it.

First it was the drought making it a very hard job for kiwi chicks to find food and water and now it’s too much water - you just can’t win at this time of the year!

The little kiwi chick we received just after Christmas was very de-hydrated and at 219 grams was close to dying. It was lucky the landowner found him just in time. Now his weight is 475 grams and he is ready to be returned back to the area once the weather improves.

“Certain people have taken to it like Jeremy and Katy. It’s definitely something we want them to enjoy,” said support worker Janine Underwood.

She thought the other residents would soon “warm up” to the idea of the swing and that there will be many years of enjoyment ahead. ¢

Historic walkway upgrade planned u by Anna Harding

A committee from the Dargaville Museum and it’s genealogy department are working to refurbish the current historic river walk in Dargaville, as well as make another one.

They will work on making informational plaques to place around the existing walk, as well as updating the original brochure.

The walk starts at the bottom of Hokianga road and goes through Mangawhare, up to Harding Park and back.

“The committee will also make it wheelchair, mobility scooter and buggy accessible, except at the top of Park road,” said member Raewyn Sills.

A new walkway is planned incorporating the Taha Awa Riverside Gardens, the riverside and historic buildings on Hokianga road.

Each walk will have around 26 informational plaques, with QR links, a type of internet link used with cell phones, that will provide more information about each site.

As part of their research, the committee is inviting long time residents to the museum on Tuesday June, 20, to reminisce on their time in the area,

Be kind to birds

It wasn’t too many years ago that any kiwi chick was held it they reached a weight of 1200 grams. Nowadays there are so many people doing so much work on predator control that some areas are safe to release a chick when it reaches 500 grams, which just shows what can be achieved when we all work together.

Like any wild kiwi or bird, the sooner they can be released the better for them. The little morepork (ruru) that I released back at Tangitarori School was a real education day for the school.

The children were part of the rescue and also took part in the release.

It was a chance to talk with them about how important conservation is and why. There is no doubt about it, the country schools are right behind looking after nature.

With all the wet weather, we have received a run of harrier hawks. They get very wet and lose their water protected coating very quickly. The dry hot weather made finding food very hard so now they are taking big risks gathering food while they can and getting into all sorts of trouble.

We have had a good start to the new year with most of the birds being released after a few days. So far we have released seven harrier hawks, six moreporks, eight native pigeons, six tuis and four kingfishers, plus quite a few sea birds.

The committee has been working on the plans since last year and ideally would like to complete the walkways by this summer, depending on the availability of grant funding.

“We hope the walks encourage people to stay longer, as they will be at least a couple of hours long, or more if they stop of at the Kaipara Machinery Club, see the museum or have a picnic. It’s about creating a educational, historical and leisurely walk for locals and visitors,” said Raewyn. ¢

At this time we have five new hawks and two kingfishers but by the time this goes to print, I guess this number will be well up due to the foul weather.

And if you find any bird in trouble just keep them warm and quiet. Please don’t try and feed them or give them water as most birds will go without food or water for 24 hours after being hurt. The Paparoa White Rock Gallery is calling on artists to participate and compete in upcoming projects.

The Northern Wairoa Lions annual fashion parade fundraiser is on Saturday, May 27. The event is in conjunction with Polwarth Design, who will be showcasing their latest winter styles, with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The first project is an exhibition titled Sculptures on the Kaipara, which is about ‘celebrating sculpture on the beautiful, dramatic and ever changing Kaipara harbour’.

Applications are open to established and emerging sculptors. They will close on September 21, with the exhibition opening on Labour weekend, Saturday, October 21.

The exhibition will be at the Moewaka Villa Studio and Gallery in Matakohe.

The second project is a ‘Trash to Art’ competition. Work entered will be judged and exhibited over Labour

weekend in Paparoa. The competition has three categories: adult ‘trash to art’; adult ‘trash to sculpture’ and a children’s category. All three categories will also have a people’s choice award.

“There’s some amazing sculptors in New Zealand so I’m really excited to see who pops up and who we get.

“And with trash to art, if you look online there’s some amazing things that people have come up with. It’s very inspiring.”

Around 30 different outfits will be shown, from ‘dressy’ evening wear, daywear and “casual wear, which is Northland’s forte,” says Polwarth Design co-owner Cheryl Polwart.

As usual, the Lions ladies will be stepping up to model, as well as other volunteers to show a range of ages and sizes.

Polwarth Design have been in business for 32 years and have run fashion shows and workshops all over Northland.

Cheryl says that they do it because of customer requests, and one of the best things about doing shows is seeing how a ‘look’ can come to life. “When you’re doing a fashion show, clothing looks totally different on a model than it does

sitting on a rack, so it gives people an opportunity to actually see the styles.

Some women have set ideas about what suits them so it’s really nice for them to come to a show and go ‘oh can I wear that, I can give it a go.’

“It’s a good evening out and the Lions are putting a real in effort into making it happen, so come out and support the Alzheimer’s Association, your local community group, and have a fun night out” said Cheryl.

Communities around Kaipara came together for Pink Ribbon fundraisers in Mangawhai, Maungaturoto and Dargaville last week, raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

Sue Crump organised a Pink Ribbon breakfast at the Dargaville Town Hall serving a record number of 230 people.

“It went really well, a big thanks to everyone that came and supported the event,” said Sue. The Maungaturoto Pink Ribbon morning tea went off without a hitch with 50 people in attendance on May 19 at

the Country Club. Hosted by Zoe and Rae Roadley they raised over $1,670.

Mangawhai hosted a Pink Ribbon High Tea last Saturday at the Senior Citizens Hall which was transformed for the event with plenty of pink bunting and decorations. They raised over $4,000 towards the cause from the sold out event. ¢

The Mangawhai Artists Incorporated opened its finished ‘Project Stingray’ to the community over the weekend with welcoming words from president Mary-Anne Boyd.

Families, artists, business people and students from Mangawhai Beach School and the Mangawhai Kindergarten gathered in blustery weather at the Moir Road gallery for the unveiling. Kaipara District Council Mayor Greg Gent was also there.

Project organiser Rosina Kamphuis spoke to the crowd as well, recapping on the project’s process and outcome. In all, 101 plywood stingrays, floor to ceiling stingray banners and even the plywood off-cuts were painted by the public for the opening. The 101 stingrays will become part of a permanent work for the outside of the gallery, while the rest will only be exhibited early this week.

Inside mosaic stingrays are up for silent auction until the exhibition ends.

The mosaics were created by Pat George and her group of mosaic artists, to inspire the painters during the painting weekend. The proceeds will go towards a new art building.

Rosina said the highlight “was the opening gesture by Project Stingray’s youngest painter, Mac Clews,

accompanied by his parents and patron of Mangawhai Artists Incorporated, Malcolm Roberts. On the dropping of the cloths hiding the installation, the two giant stingrays were revealed, now fully ornamented by 58 plywood mini

rays painted by the community to form a collaborative community work of art.

The community’s spontaneous gasp of admiration and wonderment said it all.”

The exhibition runs from May 21–24, open from 10am to 4pm each day. ¢

WELCOME TO MANGAWHAI

Mangawhai has become home to the headquarters of The Floating Foundation a charity supporting the marine environment through research while also helping to empower local communities of the Pacific through humanitarian projects.

Founder Craig Koning is in his fourth year of operation and spends half his year in the Vava’u Islands north of Tonga and the rest in Mangawhai.

While running the foundation with his team from around the world, Craig thought it made sense to have everyone in one spot — his mother’s old bn’b in Mangawhai made for the perfect spot to set up shop.

“We work very hard so we try make it out to the deli for a cheese stick and sandwich when we can. We’ve made friends with a lot of staff in town and often go along to the markets — we are slowly reaching out to the community, it’s absolutely lovely.

“All our recruiting systems are online and volunteers come from all over the world so it’s great being able to use internet remotely in a beautiful small town and be able to still communicate with the world,” said Craig.

Volunteers will head to Vava’u Islands mid-june to start their next expedition which will last through to October, aboard a large boat called the ‘Infinity’ which becomes their home and base for the following months.

Each team of volunteers will be onshore working with local communities

to train villagers in basic first aid, medical equipment use and injury/ illness recognition. With these skills, the communities will be well equipped to deal with many medical emergencies.

“All our team is made up of volunteers and we teach them all the skills they need.”

Not only does the Floating Foundation empower the remote island communities by improving their health systems, Craig also has a laboratory on board the boat where researchers can spend time conducting research on oceanic microplastic pollution.

The foundation offers sponsorships to scientists and researchers eager to conduct research and projects in the Pacific Ocean while they sail around the Vava’u Islands.

The team expects to have 60 volunteers over the four month expedition and are still on the lookout for more.

Earlier this month World Asthma Day brought the health issues faced by thousands of Kiwis into sharp relief. A potentially life threatening illness, asthma can be triggered by allergies to environmental stimuli, many of which are found exactly where we feel safest — in our homes.

Top culprits for triggering asthma attacks in the home are the tiny particles of matter which float in the air and which can come to rest on every surface.

Pollens, smoke particles, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which may be trapped in moisture, pet dander and mould spores are just a sample of the unavoidable microscopic invaders which penetrate our homes’ defenses. The key to reducing triggers — and hence attacks — is to reduce and manage the occurrence of these pollutants. A great place to begin is by creating a smoke

free environment. Cigarette smoke is well known to be a health hazard, and it’s even worse for asthma sufferers.

Smoke can also come from open wood fires, so an upgrade to a closed firebox can certainly help. Another vector for respiratory illness comes from dust mites, which thrive in damp and dusty environments. Creating a ventilated and dry environment can help drive out these tiny pests, who also hate wool carpets because of natural chemicals in sheep’s wool evolved by the sheep themselves to deter ‘unwanted hangers

Upgrading indoor environments

New Zealand weather conditions and the indoor environments of our homes are a big contributor to the asthma ratios in New Zealand.

What can we do about this? Well warmer, dryer homes are a big first step and retrofitting insulation to your home or rental is the most effective way to start. Most New Zealand homes are constructed in a way to allow improvement with upgrades to insulation. That is, an accessible ceiling space and what is termed suspended timber floors. These two areas are where to target.

While some homes will have a degree of ceiling insulation it is common to be the old minimum thickness (70mm or R1.8, with new standards at 185mm R2.9) and for the products to be in poor condition and/or not that well installed.

Hot air rises so the ceiling space can be leaking 30–35% of your home heat.

At best, historically we installed draped silver foil to the under floors of our homes with lots of older homes having absolutely nothing. New under floor insulation products on the market really do work and cover the entire floor with a 60mm R1.4–R1.8 coating of warmth.

If possible, a plastic membrane or ‘ground moisture barrier’ as they are called in the industry, placed directly

on the soil footprint under your timber floor will keep a massive amount of damp from under your house. Studies show that a dusty under floor will still be producing 40 litres of moisture a day under your house. It is common in Northland that our towns and therefore houses were built on flat land that is a drained swamp, so the amount of inherent damp under your house will be very high.

Get rid of storm water around your property before it has a chance to pond under the house. Check gutters, downpipes etc. and check to see where they exit. Drainage may need improving around the property.

Inside the house, moisture builds up.

Cooking, bathrooms, laundry and even breathing all produce moisture within the home. Getting rid of this moist air from the house at source as quickly as possible is key. If your kitchen has an external venting range hood use that, same with the bathroom. If not, opening windows to let this moist air out is a passive way to deal with it. Dry clothes outdoors whenever possible. If this is done in the house, all that moisture

from your drying clothes must end up in the house. If mould is visible in the house, typically on wet area ceilings, the best product for this a good old dose of ‘Aunt Daisy’ white vinegar. This actually

kills the mould spores as opposed to just wiping the surface to what appears to be clean.

Remember, “A warm and dry home is a healthier home”. ¢
