She has an MBA from the University of Leicester, and was previously

Pouto farmers Dan and Gina Duncan have won the prestigious 2018 New Zealand Share Farmers of the Year competition, bringing the cup back to Kaipara and Northland for the first time in 22 years.

As well as the top New Zealand title they also collected three merit awards; the Primary ITO Interview Award, the Ravensdown Pasture Performance Award and the Westpac Business Performance Award at the Invercargill ceremony. The couple moved from Tokoroa to Pouto in 2016 seeking a better future and are share milking 1,020 cows on the 460ha Pouto Topu A Trust farms property.

“We are proud to get Northland on the national cup again. It has been 22 years since someone took out this award in

this region and it is cool doing it from Pouto — somewhere that a lot of people don’t know exists,” said Dan. “We never thought we were in the running at a national level but decided to give the competition a try. I think our point of difference was coming from an area that isn’t very well known in the dairying industry. I grew up on a dairy farm, and when we decided to change career we aligned ourselves with successful farmers, and it has paid off,” he said. ¢

Ms Miller will relocate to the Kaipara District later this year with her husband and two boys, 10 and 12 years old, after a return visit to the UK. Her husband currently works as a maintenance engineer and is the primary carer for their children. When not working, the family enjoy an outdoors lifestyle, including swimming, sailing and hockey.

“The family are really excited about the move, and I look forward to getting the resilience and belief back into the community,” said Ms Miller.

NEW RULES FOR PLANTATION FORESTRY — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW New National Environmental Standards for Plantation Forestry, came into force 1st May These new standards apply to new and existing planting of greater than 1ha.

MONEY AVAILABLE FOR PLANTING FROM THE GOVERNMENT The Government’s AGS (Afforestation Grants Scheme) fund has opened again for 2018 and if you have some marginal land you’re interested in planting, this may suit you.

The fund is for planting new forest on land from 5 — 300ha (this doesn’t have to be all in one block, it could consist of a group of several titles as long as they are each at least 1ha). This could be for plantation forestry such as pines, or natives such as manuka.

The fund pays $1300/ha to help with costs of planting.

The council can help with writing a plan for the project, providing photos and GIS maps.

Dementia unit fundraiser The building fund for Maungaturoto’s Riverside Rest Home dementia unit is in for another boost from an auction of donated goods organised by The Den in conjunction with Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club.

The Den in Bickerstaffe Road is the former Scouts clubroom and is now a collection point for a wide variety of furniture and brica-brac donated from around the Kaipara.

“The auction will be held on Saturday, June 2 at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall at 11am,” said organiser, Albie Paton. “We can offer a viewing period from 10am before bidding gets underway.

Pollution fines remain unpaid Sharing agricultural knowledge u by Paul Campbell

Kiwi expertise has been revolutionising the Filipino agricultural sector through a multi-million dollar recovery programme with aid organisation Tearfund.

The move comes after super typhoon Haiyan struck in 2013 and Tearfund CEO, Ian McInnes, will speak in Dargaville about the project at the end of the month.

The project aims to get farmers working together to increase their income by producing high-quality farming produce, says Tearfund CEO, Ian McInnes.

“Typhoon Haiyan was one of the strongest typhoons in recorded history to make landfall. As well as destroying lives and infrastructure it decimated the coconut industry; the main source of income for many farmers. Fines for ‘dirty dairying’ on two properties near Dargaville, totalling $225,000, have gone unpaid after a court heard the companies charged have no assets.

Farmers David and Frances Webster and the companies Clear Ridge Station Ltd and Beejay Stud Ltd were charged

by Northland Regional Council in 2016 for allowing dairy effluent to flow into the Manganui River, which feeds into the Wairoa River and the Kaipara Harbour.

The properties concerned have since been sold to new owners unconnected with the case.

An Environment Court Judge, Craig Thompson, at the time of conviction called it the worst case of “prolonged non-compliance” he had ever seen.

The companies were fined a total of $225,000. The NRC which spent more than $50,000 on the prosecution, was entitled to 90 per cent of the fine but the companies never paid. Property

records show that the Clear Ridge farm sold for $4.56 million in January 2016. There are no details of what happened to the farm owned by Beejay Stud property.

Judge Greg Davis in Whangarei District Court has now adjourned the matter to obtain further information.

The Websters have been excused from the next appearance.

Their lawyer, Emma Smith, said the Websters had “always made it very clear” to the council that the farms had been sold, and the companies had no assets and they would not be able to pay a fine. Court records show the offending was described as “blatant, ongoing and serious”, with one of the farms being “awash with dairy effluent”, resulting in “gross contamination”. ¢

Police calls redirected

Non-emergency calls to Dargaville Police Station are being automatically routed to a centralised customer service centre in Auckland, along with those from other Northland stations.

Centre staff are able to answer and resolve the bulk of calls, and where necessary, calls will be directed back to relevant stations. The system began operating on May 9, and in the short time it has been operating, police say it has helped free up station staff to focus on other important work.

“Police are making a significant commitment to providing the best possible service to the public,” said Superintendent, Russell Le Prou.

“The centralised system is a precursor to our introduction of a single non-emergency number and the availability of online reporting for the public to report low-level incidents. This will result in a much-improved service to the public enabling them to contact us more easily and more satisfactorily.”

In Northland for the 24 hour period 7.00am May 10 to 7.00am May 11, 170 calls were answered, and 93.7% of these were within 30 seconds.

With such a wide range of styles and such a diverse pool of talent, one of the most difficult jobs of the year must surely be judging the premiere artistic event of the year, the Kaipara Art Awards.

Growing year by year and with a formidable roll-call of artists entering the competition, this annual exhibition of our brightest cultural creators has become the definitive place to bring one’s vision to the public eye. Last year

saw a massive response from the artistic community to the call for submissions, and they are steadily coming in for 2018’s gala gallery opening on July 6.

The winning entries for 2018 — Rebecca Clist’s A Walk in the Evening Garden in two-dimensions, and Elena Nikolaeva’s Toni the Tui from Tawharanui — will be an inspiration for this year’s entrants to reach for new heights of acuity and imagination. With only a few weeks left before submissions close,

the organisers of the Kaipara Art Awards wish to encourage up-and-coming artists to rise to the challenge.

It’s possible for the first time this year to make a submission without describing the finished work, which the event’s coordinators acknowledge can change and evolve during the creative process.

I was talking to a member of the public who thought the announcement of new funds for the Depar tment of Conservation would mean we would receive some money.

Unfortunately, we don’t see any of this windfall, which is why we are so thankful for our sponsors.

However, at least DOC funds for predator control should help our native birds.

We still receive around 1300 birds each year and we would love to host the Minister of Conservation to show just what we do in Northland for native birds – or any minister for that matter.

They are always welcome but we haven’t managed a visit in 25 years, so fingers crossed.

Ruawai Primary School has successfully achieved the bronze level in the Enviroschools programme, one of seven schools in the Kaipara district working through the programme.

The environmental projects and practices the students and staff have been involved in so far include caring for wildlife that lives in their school bush, using vegetable waste in their compost area, caring for chickens, keeping healthy gardens, and collecting honey from their school beehives.

They have undergone pest plant workshops with Enviroschool facilitator, Eden Hakaraia, been involved in the Kaipara Enviroschools Enterprise Expo and the recent national Wai Restoration hui held in Kerikeri, all as a part of instigating the programme. ¢

Sir, In the wake of Kaipara District Council organising insipid ‘smart’ street lighting in the district — not having the decency to even ask for our opinion. Picture in your mind a Nubian miner down an unlit coal mine at midnight — then take a stroll around the Pahi Beach camping ground, public carpark, hall and foreshore after dark.

Beware of banging your shins on the BBQ tables hiding in the Stygian darkness. Apart from the obvious problem for camp visitors — many international tourists — personal security in what is a popular public area has gone out the window. It will be a brave local walking out here after

dark. The public lighting at Whakapirau wharf has also virtually vanished.

From time to time, we ratepayers are told KDC is ready to listen to any complaints.

I suggest council then prepares for an avalanche of protests.

The Pahi Reserve Society has installed an expensive CCTV camera as a security measure. The lack of lighting no doubt will prevent the success of the venture.

Please let this not happen. Just give us our lights back before the cost of candles skyrockets!

Smart lights? Not a smart idea in a public reserve! Edison will be turning in his grave!

KDC replies: Council is replacing its street lights with LED luminaires. This project receives an 85% subsidy from the NZ Transport Agency, and will result in significant operational savings due to reduced power consumption, and also less maintenance costs as the LED luminaires last much longer than the lights being replaced.

This also results in health and safety benefits as maintenance crews don’t have to work at heights as often.

The LED luminaires have less light pollution, i.e. the light is more focussed, and as a result, there is

less light spillage. This is usually well received by the adjacent homeowners in residential areas. In this instance, however, it appears that the light from the streetlight also ‘spilled’ to provide some residual lighting to the adjacent reserve areas.

A council officer has spoken with Mr Williams and confirmed that we will ask our lighting consultant to investigate options to provide a luminaire that will provide a greater coverage area at this location. I’m hopeful that this will address Mr Williams’ concerns.

Children at the Dargaville Kindergarten have been treated to a visit from Armourguard representatives for an educational talk and display on dog safety.

Visitors to Baylys Beach will be greeted with a transformed entranceway after the area was completed by volunteers last Saturday.

The visit was a part of the Kids Safe With Dogs programme, which is available for all schools and groups to become involved in, from kindergarten age through to year five.

“This is the start of teaching kids to be safe in the community, the first step in keeping themselves safe from dogs,” said kindergarten manager, Shirley Mitchell.

Dog control educators Karla Aekins and Sharon Wyatt, with the assistance of their dog Scrappy, taught the children the three golden rules about being safe around canines — ask the owner before patting a dog, pat it on the back

or sides only, and if a dog approaches, to stand still with arms folded and look at the ground.

Children also had the opportunity to practise their approach on Scrappy.

The programme has positive flow-on effects for Karla. “When out walking my dog, kids stop and ask if that’s Scrappy and ask to pat her.”

Karla enjoys hearing stories from parents, and in a recent incident, a child did exactly what was taught and experienced no adverse repercussions.

Baylys Beach Society approached a landscape designer in early 2016 to draw up a concept plan, which gave a basis for the future development of the area. The committee adapted the plan along the way once the logistics of landscape, space, suitability of plants, and funding were available.

The site now has a new garden, a new area for rubbish bag pick up, an

alternative parking area, and a new information sign for visitors to learn about the area and be warned of natural dangers of the beach.

“We are incredibly happy with the outcome. It’s been great watching the community come together with this project, and we are proud of our entrance now,” said society coordinator, Suzy Collin. ¢

For the last nine months the Whanau Focus Centre (Kaipara Abuse Prevention Inc) in Dargaville has been able to open its doors thanks to the generosity of sponsors and now requires further funding to continue operating.

“Financial assistance from government is difficult to secure due to limited availability and funding contracts have ceased, but with support, the centre can continue their important work,” says centre manager, Rachel Ashford.

The centre opened in 2000 and continues to focus on increasing awareness of family violence and bring about positive change, assisting through social work, parenting education, advocacy, and youth mentoring.

Students at Dargaville Intermediate have been taking part in an Experiencing Marine Reserves programme over term one and recently presented their action projects as the final stage of the programme.

by Foundation North, began with a classroom presentation where students learned about marine biodiversity before they visited the Goat Island Marine Reserve to snorkel, as well as the Marine Discovery Centre.

“The experience they get at our oldest marine reserve at Goat Island is invaluable to the student’s learning,” said EMR coordinator, Isabel Krauss.

“You can only teach them so much in the classroom, but getting out there and seeing big snapper and large schools of fish in a lush kelp forest is priceless.”

The last stage of the programme

focussed on taking action in the community and marine conservation.

Students Danielle Norman and Ema Smith raised $208 selling cupcakes as a fundraiser to help protect the critically endangered Maui dolphins. As a reward for this work, Danielle represented the school on the annual EMR trip to the Poor Knights Islands on May 18.

Students also handed out 150 flyers to the public to raise awareness about plastic bags and class-created displays, posters and presentations.

Other students picked up rubbish and arranged a nine-kilometre run to raise money. ¢

PREVENTING RHEUMATIC FEVER Every time your child has a sore throat it could be serious. Don’t ignore, take them to a doctor or nurse straight away and ask for a throat swab to get it checked.

If your child has a sore throat and is given antibiotics, it should be a 10 day course of antibiotics. It’s important the child takes the whole 10 day course.

Even if your child feels better, taking antibiotics for the full 10 day course is important to prevent rheumatic fever.

Most of us are affected by the change in seasons; it is normal to feel more cheerful and energetic when the sun is shining and the days are longer or to sleep and eat more in winter. For some though, these changes have a much greater effect on mind and body, leading to symptoms of depression and have a significant impact on day-to-day life.

The condition is called seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and most common in countries where there are significant changes to daylight, temperature and weather between seasons. The occurrence is much lesser in countries close to the equator where there are minimal changes.

There are many symptoms, and you may experience such things as a lack of energy for everyday tasks, problems concentrating or sleeping, depression, anxiety, mood changes and overeating.

The exact causes of SAD are unclear, and why some people are more vulnerable to it than others, however, there are several theories worth considering.

Some people seem to need a lot more light than others for their body to function normally, and are therefore more likely to develop SAD symptoms if

there are low levels of light. It could be that the brain’s system for releasing and absorbing serotonin to regulate moods might not work properly, high levels of melatonin causing disruption or even the way your brain sets your body clock by the hours of daylight.

SAD has also been reported to have been triggered by an unwelcome or traumatic life event, such a major loss or bereavement, an assault, serious illness or a change to diet or medication.

How to counteract the effects are relatively simple and as easy as making the most of natural light by being outside as much as possible, particularly on very bright days. Avoid stress during winter by planning major events like changing jobs, moving home, or weddings, leaving them instead for in summer months, and pamper yourself by relaxing with a book or enjoy a massage.

Keeping physically active during winter can be effective in lifting your mood and increasing your energy levels, as can maintaining a healthy diet by balancing the need for carbohydrates with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you find that you cannot manage your symptoms yourself, you might find it helpful to talk to your GP who may

prescribe an antidepressant, a herbal remedy such as St John’s wort, or more intensive support through obtaining professional counselling.

Alternatively, a holiday in the sun has been proven by many to increase general demeanour by uplifting the spirits and restores feelings of calm and happiness. ¢

With tradespeople at their very busiest and the season turning toward winter with no abatement of property sales, many of those who have either just moved to our region or who wish to sell their home to prospective Kaipara residents are taking up the hammer, nails and paintbrush for a spot of do-ityourself renovation.

It’s a time-honoured Kiwi tradition, and a great way to step up the property ladder or to create a home that’s truly unique, but where are the best areas to concentrate your time and effort for the best results? Moreover, indeed, where is it prudent to draw the line and book in with the experts?

Ruling out major building, plumbing or electrical work — all of which by law must be undertaken by the professionals — there’s still a lot of scope for home improvements. Mangawhai Artists Gallery will be the venue for creative workshops during the winter months with 13 workshops and demonstrations, and occasions to develop personal art knowledge and skills in a supportive environment.

On the street, you want a bike to be noticed. On the racetrack, you want it to come first. On the dirt — and in the air — offroad, you want ground clearance and confidence-inspiring torque.

However, what the farmer wants in his two-wheeler is simple. It should start every time and work every day without drama, fuss, or a massive upkeep bill.

Now, it’s easy enough to shoehorn the word ‘just’ into that sentence.

Nonetheless, making it so requires a whole lot of research on just how tough farming conditions really are, and what the farming customer wants in a twowheeler when it comes to specifics.

Making an engine, which will scream around the Isle of Man — once — is easy compared to making a reliable and gutsy four-stroke, which will handle mud, hills, slow-speed, clutch-heavy riding behind the herd and then more mud.
