Chris Biddles and his grand champion trophy as well as prize money
Despite the drought, Te Kopuru farmers, Chris and Karren Biddles, are grand champions for the second time round in the Beef and Lamb New Zealand Steak of Origin competition. The couple won in 2007 and also took out the Producer of the Decade title in 2012. Twenty contestants made it to the semi finals and 70 per cent of the winners were from the North Island. Chris took home the grand trophy and $6,500 in prize money. He says that this year has been tough with the drought and he struggled to find enough feed for his stock but the judges
were surprised that the quality was similar to past years. “It’s pleasing because it shows that we are producing good beef consistently,” said Chris. The competition panel of four judges is made up of top chefs, a food writer, and a farm commentator. “The standard never ceases to amaze me and choosing a winner was certainly no easy task,” said head judge, Graham Hawkes. Beef entered in the contest goes through numerous tests including tenderness, pH and marbling. ■
