A group interested in the future of Redhill Youth Camp raised the matter of selling or restoring the camp at a recent meeting and a number of people expressed an interest in reviving it.

The property was given to the Methodist Church in the 1950s for use as a Youth Camp, and for many years was a successful camp for youth groups from all over Northland and beyond.

However, in recent years, there has been a lack of interest in the camp.

“The committee running the camp are hard working but they’ve been frustrated by the response they’ve received in their efforts to maintain the camp,” said Methodist Church of NZ Northland area superintendent, Rowan Smiley. “It will soon be unable to meet its’ financial commitments.”

All parties interested in restoring and using Redhill Camp are invited to a meeting at Dargaville Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 27 at 7pm to gauge the degree of support for reviving and continuing this campsite.

A decision to revive the camp or sell the property will be made at this meeting.

“If you want the camp to continue, please come to the meeting prepared to make a commitment, as a lack of support means it will be sold. To date, the response for restoration has been overwhelmingly supportive.”

That message to children at Selwyn Park School came from a group of three actors from the Duffy Theatre which visited last week. For one — Laraleigh Bennett-Galo — coming to Dargaville was extra special, as she grew up in the town and went to Dargaville High School. Duffy Theatre also visited other schools in the district, including Te Kopuru and Paparoa.

Fundraisers plan Welcome home beach trek from Pouto

Kaipara fundraising walkers plan a beach odyssey to prepare some of their number for the next Oxfam Trailwalk, which covers 100km in under 36 hours to raise money for poverty relief.

Dargaville’s Miriam Guthrie and Mike and Suzanne Fleming, with Paul and Leslie Fluhler from Ruawai, are planning to trek from Pouto to Bayly’s with an overnight camp along the way, to help prepare Paul Fluhler for the next Oxfam outing.

“He has the event in his blood,” said Miriam, who recently helped raise $2630 for poverty as a member of Kaipara’s ‘Lost in Pace’ team of walkers who completed a Taupo journey.

“The Pouto expedition was inspired by our training for Taupo,” said Miriam.

“This included trekking the awe inspiring Tongariro Crossing as the final curtain to our six months rigorous training. Eight hours spent traversing a volcanic, barren but magnificent

landscape. If this wasn’t going to set us up for our Taupo challenge, nothing would.”

However, Miriam remembers a tough Taupo challenge.

“Eventually blisters, pulled hamstrings, chafing, dodgy knees and severe tiredness threatened to halt our efforts. At checkpoint seven, two of our original team remained, the ones who had or were crossing the pain barrier, barely intact.

Finally, 100km in 30 hours and 30 minutes saw Miriam and Paul Fluhler stagger over the finish line. “greeted by our amazing support crew, Leslie Fluhler, her daughter Clare Arima and Steve Guthrie and Mike and Suzanne Fleming. 

In a New Zealand first, the Habitat for Humanity house was built at Northland Region Corrections Facility at Ngawha, as part of an ongoing relationship to help prisoners gain recognised trade qualifications.

Alma Futalan and her family can now move into their new home, where they will put in 500 hours of work finishing the interior and landscaping the section.

“I’d like to thank all the volunteers and my family and friends who have worked tirelessly on our new home and I’d like to say a special thanks to Habitat for Humanity,” said Alma.

“This really is a dream come true and the house is beautiful.”

Eighteen families applied for the home and the successful family were chosen for their overcrowded and unhealthy living conditions, long-term commitment to Dargaville and responsible way they ran their household.

“Habitat’s philosophy is about giving families a hand up into home ownership,” said Habitat for Humanity Northland executive officer Conrad LaPointe. “We are very pleased to

support Alma into her new home; she has worked so hard for this opportunity.”

Debbie Evans CEO Kaipara Community Health Trust said this is the fourth Habitat for Humanity House to be built in Dargaville in five years and should be seen as a huge achievement for our community. A fifth build is on the horizon.

“The Dargaville Habitat Committee is a dedicated team, and we are always looking for local volunteers to work on the builds. Donations, whether they be monetary, land or trade-skills, are also always welcome.”

Mangawhai decision expected next week

Opportunities for Kiwis are questioned

Mangawhai residents are expected to find out late next week if they have won their court case challenging the legality of rates imposed to pay for cost blowouts on their sewerage scheme.

Labour’s spokesperson on senior citizens, Ruth Dyson has told Kaipara Greypower that New Zealand was changing, with opportunity slipping away.

Their court challenge against the Kaipara District Council was heard in the Whangarei High Court in early February. At the end of the hearing, Justice Paul Heath reserved his decision.

However, Justice Heath is now presiding in the trial of former South Canterbury executives and directors in what could be the country’s most complex fraud prosecution. Justice Heath has told lawyers for both parties that because of the time requirements of the trial, a judgement on the

“The sort of country I grew up in was a country in which anyone could do anything providing they had the right attitude. But for more and more New Zealanders, that is slipping away.

While some cities were moving ahead, the provinces like Northland were missing out. “Northland has so much potential. But it also has a high rate of youth unemployment.”

Labour plans to raise the age of eligibility for New Zealand Superannuation to 67 by 2032. Ms Dyson says the country’s growing number of elderly, combined with fewer people of working age means there is no alternative. “I’m not convinced by Greypower’s argument that we can leave it unchanged. I want to stand before an audience of young people and say ‘these are the rules’, so they can plan ahead.”

Mangawhai case would be unlikely until later this year.

According to Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association chairman Bruce Rogan, Justice Heath offered the parties two options: leaving the matter until the full judgement — including reasons — is available; or issuing a decision by the end of May, with a judgment setting out the reasons to follow later in the year.

Mr Rogan says both sides decided they wanted the decision earlier rather than later. 

I can think of few community celebrations that matched the passion displayed at Betty Nelley’s retirement as Chief Executive of the Matakohe Kauri Museum recently.

What a great lady, and what great leadership.

Betty has spent the past nineteen years contributing to this amazing museum.

The Matakohe Kauri Museum is a huge contributor to our region. It is a complex business to run, involving dozens of people – staff and volunteers all adding their piece. She hands it over in good shape.

There are many community projects in Kaipara being promoted or under development, some that I want to mention not because they are more notable than others, but just to give examples of community leadership in the Kaipara.

In Ruawai, young student Brooklyn Wilson has prepared a concept plan for the further development of the Ruawai Wharf area. Her leadership of this project has earned her recognition nationally – last year she won the New Zealand Community Problem Solving Individual competition, and now she is fundraising to compete in an International Conference being hosted next month at Iowa State University in the United States of America.

In Maungaturoto, you will have noticed the gardens developing alongside the main road. The initiative, leadership and work behind this project is entirely local.

In Mangawhai, the ideas behind the Mangawhai Activity Zone and the wider Mangawhai Park area reflect the passion of a number of people, including those promoting the museum, the heritage village, walking tracks, and a place for the arts. The passion from those who lead these groups is also reflected by the key sponsor of the skate park, Colin Gallagher.

In Dargaville, there are three reserves adjacent to one another located on Mount Wesley. They are Harding Park, Pou Tu o Te Rangi Pa site, and the Old Mount Wesley Cemetery. It has been recognised by each that it is desirable to “bring together” those who govern the individual parts so that plans made by each are both aspirational and operationally coordinated. Examples include proposals for a pedestrian loop and planting. Following discussions between those who govern and manage each of these three reserves, a proposal to “act” as one governing body is being advanced.

Answering a question about proposed reform of councils in Northland, Ms Dyson opposed forced amalgamations.

“Local communities need to lead the thinking. Central government needs to ensure their wishes are respected.” 

In Kaiwaka, there are those who seek to improve access to the Kaipara Harbour – the parking area, the boat ramp and the jetty at the Kaiwaka rest area for canoe and kayak access.

And so it goes on – from the Pouto School, to Glinks Gully to Baylys Beach, and further north; from the settlements north of Dargaville to those on the Kaipara Harbour, we have projects being promoted in our communities, for our communities.

The Commissioners applaud and often discuss these initiatives. We are keen to see Council supporting them, and in some communities, we have engaged formally through public meetings in “community action plans”.

Council’s support is restricted in a financial sense, as the priority of getting Council’s own house in order is worked on. However, we have a small community development team at Council headed by Darlene Lang who may be able to provide other kinds of advice and support. Sometimes this may simply involve facilitating discussions between community groups that each seeks involvement in a particular location, as is the case above with respect to the three reserves in Dargaville and in the case of Mangawhai Park.

The Northland Regional Council, NIWA and Auckland Council are in the process of deploying an environmental monitoring system in the Kaipara harbour, aimed at monitoring water quality and improving the ability to predict water clarity.

Construction of an Estuarine Monitoring System (EMS) at Tikinui wharf, on the west bank of the Wairoa River, is set for July and August 2014.

A public meeting will be held at Ruawai Community Sports Club at 7pm on Thursday, May 29.

In 1944 Allied land forces liberated the abbey on the top of a mountain whose strategic position had helped fascist forces keep control of Rome and much of Southern Italy.

After months of US bombing had reduced much of the abbey to rubble, ground troops fought their way up steep mountain sides and across flooded rivers and valleys; always under threat of shell, artillery and tank fire from Nazi forces.

Mr Lendrum was working on the family farm near Te Kopuru when war was declared. He was mobilised to Egypt and took part in the Monte Cassino campaign as a member of the Signals Corp. He was part of a team responsible for setting up and maintaining phone communication systems, working

under constant enemy fire. ”There were casualties,” he says. “But not a great number.”

Mr Lendrum says he and fellow kiwis had little to do with the locals. But he got to meet a few Americans but was not all that impressed. “We reckoned the Americans weren’t very good soldiers.

They weren’t that practical. They didn’t have that kiwi ingenuity.”

When the war ended Mr Lendrum returned home to the family farm. He is a long serving member of the Rotary Club of Dargaville and at age 93 lives in retirement at the Norfolk Court rest home. To mark the 70th anniversary of the campaign for Monte Cassino, some of Mr Lendrum’s letters and photos from the conflict are on display at Dargaville Museum. 

farming and log exports. The economic viability of this district is now being put at risk by several problems.

1. Severe droughts have cost our farmers millions of dollars.

2. Dargaville needs an extra water supply for droughts.

3. Road works are being put off.

4. In future, the town and kumara farms will need flood protection.

5. The Kaipara District Council has an extra $35m of debt due to the lack of financial oversight by its auditor, Audit NZ. I understand that if the Audit Office compensated KDC, this would be covered by public liability insurance.

Already the dairy factory, 3 sawmills, the garden centre, the sand barge, the sand & gravel yard, the taxi, a trucking business, the hardware shop, eight other shops, a beach tour bus, a fibreglass factory, two shuttle buses and a top dressing company have gone out of business here.

Quite a big loss of tax revenue.

I have good reason to believe that if KDC is compensated, there will be thousands of extra party votes for National.

Budget boost for kauri  by Joanne Speechly

The 2014 Budget has promised more than $25 million to battle the outbreak of kauri dieback disease and The Kauri Museum at Matakohe plans to play its part.

 Money will go toward improving boot wash and hygiene stations such as this

The government will invest $15.8 million in operating funding and $10.7 million in capital funding over the next four years to ramp up measures to protect kauri forests from dieback disease.

The money will go towards improving Department of Conservation walking tracks, boardwalks and hygiene stations, research, surveillance and co-ordinating a response to the disease.

“Kauri is an iconic species for New Zealand and one of the oldest and largest organisms on earth,” said Conservation Minister Nick Smith. “Kauri dieback is a significant threat to their survival and we

need to ramp up our efforts to protect these magnificent trees.”

The disease is caused by a microscopic, fungus-like organism which infects the tree’s roots and damages tissues that carry nutrients within the tree, effectively starving it.

The Kauri Museum CEO, Bet Nelly, welcomed the budget decision.

“This funding is very important to Northland and to New Zealand and also The Kauri Museum. We have always endeavoured to be a place of excellence for kauri and our archives boast scientific knowledge that makes us a very important research station.” 

Cadets at Whenuapai Thirteen young Kaipara air training cadets experienced the thrill of a lifetime recently when took part in a drill competition at Whenuapai Air Force Base near Auckland.

The cadets were mostly aged from 12 to 14 and were members of the 57 Squadron based in Dargaville.

Flying Officer Rhonda Gilligan says the cadets were very nervous. Nevertheless, they gave a good account of themselves.

“They marched well and performed a set of drill moves in front of an audience of 150 people and two judges from cadet forces.”

Before the big day on May 6 the cadets practiced twice a week under the coaching of Under Officer Crystal McEwing. “They were probably one of

the youngest teams in the competition.

We were placed 9th out of 10 teams and were very pleased with this result” “It was a great experience for the cadets, as many of them had not been on a military base before. We stayed the night and got to speak to one of the Dog Handlers from the Air Force as he did his security rounds for the night. They also got to see some of the Air Force’s planes and a firefighting display” Ms Gilligan says all the cadets enjoyed the experience and are keen to try it again next year. 

Doors to Family Store remain shut

The doors of Dargaville’s Salvation Army Family Store are set to remain locked for some time as the organisation searches for a manager to run it.

The store on Normanby St shut several weeks ago after the previous manager left.

Salvation Army Family Services spokesman Jonathan Platt says while there has been some interest in the position, he has yet to find anyone suitable.

He says there is no date set for the Dargaville store to reopen, as that will

depend on finding and employing a suitable manager.

The family store is the Salvation Army’s only operation in Dargaville and is administered from Whangarei, which is the army’s nearest place of worship.

Family stores sell used household goods and second-hand goods. Profits are used to fund the Salvation Army’s community and welfare programmes. 

Farming and the Budget The Minister of Finance the Hon Bill English stated this week when commenting on the budget, that he did not view the budget as steady as you go with a few freebies, but a reflection on New Zealand being able to move forward confidently.

Over the years the government budgets have demonstrated a significant shift in the relationship between government and the farmer, which began in the late 1800s when New Zealand was an emerging nation reliant on agriculture for export income.

In May 1881 under the heading of Bonuses on Colonial Industries, the government offered £500 for the first 25 tons of butter or 50 tons of cheese to be exported. There was a stipulation that the produce had to have originated in a factory operating on the ‘American principle’ of a producer co-operative and was quite different from those of the butter and cheese dairies in the United Kingdom.

The underlying theme in the government’s budget is that with a government debt of $60 billion the nation will be reliant on New Zealand’s

primary industries to provide the export income needed to repay debt.

It wasn’t so long ago that every National government Minister of Finance in presenting the budget acknowledged the value of New Zealand’s agricultural exports and farming subsidies were available for fertiliser, stock incentive schemes and several other incentives.

National Prime Ministers the Rt Hon Keith Holyoake and Rt Hon Rob Muldoon, also in his capacity as Minister of Finance, always expounded the value and the need to support the New Zealand farmer. The 1984 election resulted in David Lange’s Labour government being elected and Sir Robert Muldoon was removed as National Party leader. The Lange government removed all farming subsidy incentives.

The sudden transition from subsidies to a free-market economy under ‘Rogernomics’ caused a number of farmers to lose their farms through the resultant high interest rates — some in excess of 20 percent, that were charged at the time. As a young farmer I and other farmers struggled financially.

Federated Farmers’ leadership of the time embraced the new free-market economy and with others were highly critical of Muldoon’s former monetary policies. 17,000 farmers marched on Wellington protesting against the new Labour government’s policies as being unfair and not even-handed. During this time it seemed ironic to me that those farming leaders who embraced the freemarket economy had been responsible for asking for farming subsidy incentives SERVICES & MACHINERY

in the first place. While sitting at home one day, I decided to telephone Sir Robert Muldoon at his home. His wife Lady Thea answered and said Bob is in the United States and will be home next week. I told her I was getting a beast processed at the local butcher for them and I wanted to meet Sir Robert. She invited me to come down the following Saturday. When I arrived at their Auckland home, Lady Thea had just returned from a run. We unloaded the meat and filled the freezer. The freezer was brand new and empty.

She introduced me to Sir Robert who I had not met before. Sir Robert asked, why had I given them the meat? It is a wonderful gesture. I replied, it is in appreciation of all the support you have given to farmers over many years.

I asked him how come his freezer was empty. He said no farmer has ever given me a beast before.

I learnt a valuable lesson here and that was, in spite of his generosity to farmers, it didn’t necessarily mean that he received any reciprocal acknowledgement. I received a letter from Sir Robert and his wife thanking me for the meat, which they said they thoroughly enjoyed and he certainly never forgot, because on a number of occasions after, when I invited him to farmer meetings in Northland, he always obliged.

Today’s National government which was once described as the farmers’ party in gumboots, has clearly come to the realisation that it can no longer simply rely on the rural sector to get re-elected. Bill English’s budget is clearly targeting the young urban voter, the majority of which live in Auckland.

Every political party knows that whoever gets the majority of the Auckland vote becomes the government. 

I wasint fushed about mushies, but Sharlene give me all her and Bossis bakon rind an scraps eh? Then wiv a cuppatea, Boss startid on again about bein’ ina dark.

“Ya know Sharlene,” he sed.

That Billy Inglish (he lookt at me an’ sed ‘don’t wurry Dog, he probly named after you ‘cos ya got brains’) then tole Sharlene: ”Cant bluddy werk it out deah. Drought secrets passed on  by Colin Patterson

Doug Avery knows just how hard farming can be when the rain doesn’t fall.

In 1998, tired and dispirited after successive droughts that had ravaged his 1500-hectare Marlborough property, he was almost ready to walk off the land and give up the property that had been in his family for almost 80 years.

But after attending a seminar about Lucerne, not only was he able to stay, he was able to turn his farm into a thriving and profitable operation. “It went from being a farm that muddled along to being a highly profitable and resilient property. I went through a journey of discovery and found a new way of doing things.”

Although Marlborough has been subject to many droughts since, the farm’s productivity has risen massively, doubling between 2008

and 2010. In the latter year he was named South Island farmer of the year.

Now Mr Avery has come to Northland for the first time to pass on his secrets to farmers struggling after two successive dry summers. He’ll be in Dargaville on Friday May 24 for a seminar called Beyond Reasonable Drought. The event starts at 10.30am at the Dargaville Rugby Club and is supported by De Bruin chartered accountants and Silver Fern Farms. A village of surprises

Even in winter, the seaside town of Mangawhai is a gem, well worth a visit. With its world-renowned walking tracks, famous restaurants and a definite artistic flair, Mangawhai is a place that’s easy to love, but takes a long time to explore.

Paparoa lies nestled in a valley on the southern lee of the Kaipara Harbour, the jumping-off point to the fishing and vacation spots of Pahi and Tinopai, and a unique slice of Kaipara countryside in its own right.

A weekend here could take in wineries and the finer things in life — many of them centred around the palatial courtyard of Bennett’s. Just down the road is the Mangawhai Tavern, on of the hottest music venues on the East Coast, and not far around the corner is the award-winning Sail Rock, the perfect venue for a meal with friends.

Art is at the heart of Mangawhai, with a museum, galleries, potteries and crafts all well represented. The market

days here are a colourful collection of farmer’s produce and locally made crafts, and well worth the drive on a weekend morning. There’s even a terrific golf course for those who enjoy teeing off by the seaside!

And that’s the real star of the show — the panorama of the Pacific Ocean stretching from the break at the heads all the way down to the mountainous dunes. Picture perfect, whether tranquil or stormy, this vista is unmissable. 

The road between this small village and the similarly small town of Oakleigh, on the Whangarei coast, is rated as one of the most interesting and challenging in the country to drive.

But getting to Paparoa is only one half of the scenic story.

Maungaturoto

The ‘real Kiwi town’ to visit Maungaturoto’s status as the definitive ‘real Kiwi town’ comes from two deciding factors.

Meeting place of two waters Mrs Wishy Washy Ruawai recently turned 100 — and if recent developments in the small riverside town are anything to go by, a century of history has left the community feeling brighter and younger than ever.

Kids from local Kaipara schools and Kindergartens can’t believe their eyes when they come face to face with beloved children’s book character Mrs Wishy Washy.

From the iconic colourful ‘dancing fruit and veg’ atop Kaipara Kumara’s packing house, to the interesting little shops and eateries in the main street, this is one small Kiwi town which knows how to do things large.

Take for example the celebrations held for that 100 year milestone.

Comments that ‘nobody knows how to party like Ruawai’ by locals certainly came true, with a fun-fair atmosphere animating proceedings over the weekend of March 29th and 30th. Now into its 101st year, Ruawai continues to surprise, with numerous must see sights in and around the town.

Make a note to stop in at Ruawai’s newest shops — one for the big boys and one with a definite appeal to the girls! Hot Chops and Motorcycles is the name of the petrol-head’s heaven on one side of the street, where chromed out, high-octane custom choppers are built and bikes modified by a skilled crew of two.

Across the road you’ll find fairies galore at the (very pink) Fairies and Things — the ‘things’ encompass all manner of gifts and useful bits and bobs, from glittering plush toys to nuts and bolts.

Stop by at the Pizza Bar for a real treat — locals know that this is the spot for the best pizza and steak this side of the Wairoa. And while you’re in town — weather permitting — there’s great fishing to be had out on the water, where that river meets the Kaipara Harbour itself. If you’re feeling fit, you could even stop to climb Tokatoka peak on the way to Dargaville. The ascent is tricky, but the view is worth it! 

But thanks to the efforts of Ruawai volunteer Sara Ball, that’s exactly what they get to do, paying a visit to her farm and even getting to help her wash the animals, just like in the storybook by Kiwi writer Joy Cowley.

Sara says that she needs the help of many willing participants to make the educational and fun visits happen — as well as a ‘well padded’ costume to help her take on the persona of the kindly fictional washerwoman. But it’s all worth it to see the looks on kids’ faces. 

Traditional Manuka wood smoked Bacon, Ham & Salami NIWA and Northland Regional Council will be holding a public meeting to provide information about the intended deployment of scientific instruments on Tikinui Wharf, in the lower Wairoa River (Kaipara Harbour). The station is part of a harbour-wide environmental monitoring system being developed in conjunction with Auckland Council to improve understanding of the effects of land runoff on harbour water quality.
