Mangawhai development ‘eagerly embraced’

“The intention is to keep these meetings going. We are going to have a number of workshops going with the community over the following months to provide a better forum to engage and looking at a similar gathering of the community in August or September. It was a very positive meeting.”

Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith, deputy mayor Peter Wethey and councillor Jonathan Larsen also attended.

“The developers are very open to hearing from the community. People had concerns, about where the water would come from and go to from such a large development, and seemed to be satisfied with the answers they were given about that at this stage,” said Mayor Smith.

Mangawhai Activity Zone Charitable Trust chairperson, Colin Gallagher, said the meeting was ‘very positive.’

“The community is embracing this major development eagerly.”

Other projects are coming to the fore, including the community-driven Mangawhai Activity Zone with the recent completion of an adult outdoor fitness gym and three bike circuit tracks planned.

and bring it up to Olympic standards for training ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“Seeing everyone enjoying the park these school holidays makes all the hours we put in worthwhile.

Our committee is quite small, with eight members, and it’s 100 per cent voluntary,” said Mr Gallagher.

“In a few years, I expect Mangawhai’s population to be just as big as Dargaville’s.”

The trust is working closely with the Mangawhai Recreational Charitable Trust, and work has begun on the Mangawhai Estuary to Vineyard Walking/Cycling track, which will link the Mangawhai Golf Club, the information centre and the Mangawhai Activity Zone bike track to the Pioneer Village and Mangawhai Museum.

MRCT trustee, Gordon Hosking, says the aim is to get cyclists off the road.

“At the moment it’s too dangerous.

These roads were never designed for cyclists.”

The Pioneer Village Trust committee is working on completing the courtyard area in front of the historic buildings, and plans to hold events such as a night market on the site as funding allows. ¢

Information sought for armed robbery

Dargaville Police are appealing to the public for help to identify and locate the offender of an aggravated robbery at the Normanby Street Mobil service station.

The incident happened at approximately 8.45pm on Wednesday, April 25.

A male offender had entered the service station and approached the cashiers’ area armed with a knife and demanded cash.

The sole attendant had handed over cash and the offender had then fled on foot toward Parore Street.

The offender is described as male of average height and medium build. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and black three-quarter pants or long shorts. His face was covered with yellow material.

“This incident has been traumatic for the victim, who was the sole attendant at the time. Police need to apprehend this offender, who needs to be held to account before further violent crimes are committed or members of our community are seriously injured,” said Detective Sergeant, Jonathan Tier.

Anyone who was in the vicinity around this time that saw anything suspicious or has information relating to this incident is asked to contact Police. The public are advised not to approach the offender if they know the identity

Creating well-mannered dogs for a safer community is the motto behind an educational seminar on May 2 focussing on the expectations and realities of dog ownership, to enable future owners or adopters to make informed decisions.

New Zealand Post is adapting to the increasing amount of online correspondence and will be rolling out a three-day delivery schedule throughout the Kaipara by the end of June.

Breed characteristics, costs, preparing your home and legal requirements are some of the topics included in the seminar, which is open to current and future owners, and suited to puppies and older dogs.

“We run foundation level courses in both agility and obedience. Once handlers have participated in these courses, they can then choose what they would like to do or what they think their dog needs to do! We encourage all foundation level participants to continue with other training activities and support them in whichever activity they choose,” says club secretary, Jo Mayne.

The club has been active since 2003 and has members and participants coming from Maungaturoto, Wellsford, Waipu, and Kaiwaka, and one of the committee members holds obedience training classes on Tuesday evenings at Selwyn Park, Dargaville. Instructors also hold “new entrant” obedience classes for puppies and dogs over 12 weeks of age, and each is given help and feedback throughout the class.

“It is important that handlers have the tools, information and skills to ensure their dogs are safe in the community.

A New Zealand Post spokeswoman said they are assessing each town individually and are looking closely at the best way to provide services in each area.

“As part of moving to every second day delivery in the Kaipara region, we’ve already contacted our customers in Dargaville, Ruawai, Maungaturoto and Mangawhai to let them know these

changes will be happening in their areas by the end of June.

“We want to reassure your readers that our delivery targets are staying the same. We aim to deliver at least 95 per cent of standard mail within three working days, and urgent courier packages overnight, just as we do today.”

The company acknowledges this will affect how people receive their mail, however, say the changes are necessary to operate a commercially sustainable mail business. ¢

A framework of steel has risen on the foreshore as Tinopai’s new combined rescue services centre is well on the way towards bringing together local emergency services under one roof.

The building will house the Coastguard North Kaipara rescue vessel, the rural fire tender and the first aid response vehicle. Community fundraising activity including book sales provided a kickstart to the project, followed by a $111,000 lotteries grant, which has raised more than $190,000, while further fundraising will go to ensuring the completion of the building.

A sponsors wall at the centre will identify donors who ‘buy a brick’ at $50, a block at $200 and a beam at $500.

Tinopai Emergency Services Inc treasurer, Sarolta Bernhardt, said the project was a community facility to

house the local services, and funding is still ongoing. ”While completion is up to the weather gods and (contractors) Total Span, we are hopeful that will be in the next couple of months.”

Along with the fire unit and first aid response vehicle, the centre will also be home to the North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard vessel Manaia Rescue, which is now operational with qualified skippers and crew.

Ex-tropical cyclone Bobby arrived in Dargaville last week — in the form of an annual training exercise for staff from Kaipara District Council, Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, and police.

They met at the Kaipara District Council offices for the exercise based around the arrival of a fictional, but realistic, weather event to be provided with weather forecasts, rainfall figures, reports of damage from emergency services, electricity companies and members of the public, and encouraged to think about their own personal preparedness for such an event.

Work will soon be starting on the new Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade station at the Mangawhai Park emergency services hub.

Mangawhai youngster, Dylan Gayford, has been selected to attend an American summer camp just outside New York for three-and-a-half weeks at the end of June.

The site, next to the St John Ambulance Station, now has resource consent from the Kaipara District Council and a lease to occupy the land.

Work to clear the trees from the land is expected to start in the next couple of weeks.

“Hopefully, we will get a building platform sorted out then and once a bit more funding comes through we should be able to make a start on the building,” said Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer, Rob Leslie.

“We are still fundraising for our share of housing our community funded van.

We are probably three-quarters of the way to our target goal.”

The fire station is funded by Fire and Emergency New Zealand and is expected to cost in excess of one million dollars for the entire project. The brigade was

also recently made a full fire service brigade rather than an auxiliary one.

Mr Leslie, who was in the Kaiwaka brigade for 27 years prior to joining the Mangawhai brigade, says this means they now run their own area and station instead of having input from Whangarei.

“It also gives us the opportunity to have the highest ranking officer as a chief fire officer instead of a senior station officer. Now we will have a chief, deputy and senior station officer, the same as any other brigade in Kaipara.

The move is brought about by Fire and Emergency New Zealand who are in the midst of combining urban and rural brigades and standardising each station.

“They are seeing good stability in the brigade and we are recruiting so it’s a reflection of that,” Mr Leslie said. ¢

The 14-year-old year nine Dilworth student was deputy head boy last year for the junior syndicate and is a keen sportsman.

“The summer camp will help to teach me more about myself, gain confidence and learn life skills that I would take on into my future. This trip will also give me a clearer vision of a place where I would like to end up at,” says Dylan.

Dylan enjoys outdoor activities, travel and aspires to one day study and play basketball in America. This will be his second trip overseas.

“I’ve never been to America, and I want to meet and surround myself with new people and learn about different cultures.”

A cycle and walkway trail planned between Kaiwaka and Dargaville is gaining traction with help from the Matakohe Environs Group and the newly-formed Matakohe Cycleway/ Walkway Group.

Chaired by Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club president, Alex Tetzner, a group of 15 people met on April 19 to discuss a project to connect the Ruawai Stopbank Cycle/Walkway, currently being upgraded, to the Matakohe Bridges Trail on which work will begin after the current roading upgrades are completed.

The group will work in conjunction with Rotary, The Kauri Museum and Kaipara District Council and the track will form part of a longer trail to join eventually with the Opua-Horeke trail. A boom in the local population, coupled with a buoyant real estate market has seen the value of Kaipara homes increase substantially in recent years. But now the inevitable has occurred — those who specialise in making new homes and existing homes better are in hot demand. With winter approaching fast, this has led to a ‘time squeeze’ on our local tradies, with two outcomes.

The first is that waiting for a job to be undertaken is the ‘new normal’ in what was once an ‘instant gratification’ marketplace. All tradespeople from all parts of the industry agree — if you are qualified and competent — right now, you will be busy. And that means that gone are the days of being able to begin work this very minute — except in dire emergencies.

The call from tradespeople is clear — if you have a job that needs doing, plan ahead and talk to them sooner rather than later. While our local glaziers, electricians, plumbers and more, will still move heaven and earth to help those in true distress; elective projects like renovations, room additions, upgrades and expansions are on a timetable as one would expect in many of the world’s big cities.

The good news — it’s a great time to be a qualified professional right now.

There’s plenty of work available for those looking to make a ‘sea change’

and quit the rat race, with many of our long-established tradespeople hiring new talent. There’s also a golden opportunity for apprentices to learn the fundamentals and rise to becoming qualified in their own right. heard about unqualified workers with limited experience and no credentials taking advantage of the credulous and frantic. The message from both the government and professional organizations is clear — you don’t need the trouble, which unlicensed tradies bring. Since new laws came into effect to upgrade building practices, penalties for impersonating a real electrician, builder, roofer or fireplace specialist, for example, have gotten perilously steep.

Massive fines can be just the beginning — and not just for the fraudulent worker.

It’s an offence to knowingly hire an unqualified person to undertake certain sensitive areas of work — structural building, electrical wiring, plumbing and sanitation — the list goes on. Being slapped with a penalty could be the mildest of outcomes should things go truly wrong.

In this regard, insurance plays a key role. After the natural disasters in Christchurch, we’d all admit that it’s foolish not to have our homes covered.

Who knows what could happen next?

But installing your own lighting, getting a ‘feller from down the pub’ to fix that gas califont, or even sweeping your own chimney — could all invalidate your insurance. Even if unqualified repairs and renovations have nothing to do with a fire or some other catastrophe, it may be hard to argue your case with the claims department. These issues

Successful snail survey Hawaiian visit to Waipoua u by Jill Dickie

Students from the EcoQuest Education Foundation natural history research group have spent a week conducting research into how many kauri snails are present on Waipoua Forest Trust land and found 268 in the older Triangle forest, and 11 in the newly regenerating Millenium forest.

The Waipoua Forest and Tane Mahuta received an international visit last Friday from a group of environmental experts and university lecturers from Hawaii.

“When a snail was found we measured and weighed each individual, then gave them a number tag to ensure we counted each snail only once,” said Ecoquest spokesperson, Shelley Myers.

Kauri snails belong to the group of northern giant land snails, which contains some of New Zealand’s largest snails. Those found during this survey were between 9cm and 1.6cm long and weighed between 60 grams and 3.5 grams.

Once widespread, they are now endangered or threatened with the main causes for their decline being human destruction, domestic grazing of their habitat and predation by rodents, possums, and pigs. Predator control, renewed plantings, and fencing stock from known inhabited areas helps to increase their population.

EcoQuest also monitored pest abundance using tracking tunnels and found that both forests contained an abundance of rats and mice. “It is encouraging to see the kauri snail population thriving in the Triangle Forest

despite the presence of pests, and as the canopy develops in the Millennium Forest and leaf litter accumulates on the forest floor, we can expect the snail population to thrive here also.” ¢

The diverse group of 35 visitors coordinated their trip with Te Roroa and DOC to exchange ideas and strategies around challenges encountered with conservation, including kauri dieback disease and predator control methods.

The group travels to different parts of the world learning how to integrate aspects of other cultural restoration projects and initiatives into their own community and environment. Based on the concept of being stewards of their environment they aim to enhance the ways people engage with the landscape and preserve it for future generations.

“This experience has taught me that the ocean does not separate us, the ocean is what connects us,” said visitor, Darcy Yogi.

“It was inspiring to see the Te Roroa Iwi working seamlessly with government agencies to manage their natural resources and addressing emerging challenges like kauri dieback in innovative ways.

“We are facing similar issues in Hawaii and are working towards integrating ancestral knowledge into the way we manage our lands,” said Kualii Camara.

Within their stewardship training programme, the Hawaiian group compare themselves with their Ohia tree, which is similar to the pohutukawa, thriving in different environments and adapting to the varying conditions, and “use this concept to connect science with culture and spirituality.” ¢

Yacht clubs and boating clubs across the country are centres for socialising and making friends — you don’t have to go far in this island nation to find a group of Kiwis enthusiastic about boats and the sea! However, as was demonstrated so vividly by the turnout for the recent Dargaville Regatta, our local boating clubs are also the custodians of history.

With a big 75th birthday on the horizon, the long-established Northern Wairoa Boating Club is a perfect example.

Members take to the water not just in new craft fresh from the boat builders, but also in a sizable fleet built right here in the waning days of the kauri milling industry. Boat building and the commercial use of the wide, muddy Northern Wairoa is in the DNA of Dargaville, a place where everyone from international traders, to navies to brave explorers once came to for the best designs in hulls and keels, masts and sails. Seeing a teeming mini-armada of craft out on the water brought back memories of those olden times, and the more recent post-war years when anglers and cruisers built home-made craft to ply the Kaipara Harbour.

Plans are afoot to gather stories, photos and reminiscences of those times into an expanded written history of the river, the club and its members — so any snippets of news, old albums

or tall tales from the age of the box brownie camera and the pre-concrete Dargaville ‘harbour bridge’ would be welcomed by current club members.

Of course, the recent regatta would not have been possible without the bountiful generosity of the good business folk of Dargaville, who banded together to offer ample prizes for the captains and crews who were victorious on the day.

A second renaissance has occurred recently, as patrons flock to the Northern Wairoa Boating Club for dinner — Friday steak nights and Sunday roast nights are becoming quite a drawcard!

It’s also worth noting that this inclusive bunch of weekend sailors, keen anglers, canny river captains and fishing story raconteurs is always keen to meet newcomers to town.

Those retiring from the big city to enjoy country life may very well enjoy the hospitality of fellow boating enthusiasts — whether they command a 2hp tinny or a twin-masted yacht. ¢
