“Our team are doing exceptionally well, half of them play in the Dargaville High School team,” said club president Dharmendra Kumar. “Kerikeri won 2–1, and they appreciated the challenge we gave them as their previous wins have been in double figures. The senior men’s team is a development team.

Jean Johnson from Ray White Realty in Dargaville says there has been an increase in property’s selling to people moving in from outside the area.

“Not just Aucklanders, but also those from other places including Tauranga, Oamaru, Kerikeri and some coming back from Australia,” she said.

“There has been no set pattern.

Clients are looking for sections to build new houses on as well as those buying existing properties. We have quite a few of the older generation coming to Dargaville. It seems younger people are moving to east Kaipara, mainly for work opportunities.”

Ms Johnson added that Kaipara faced a similar sale and effect result as Auckland, in that a shortage of rental properties in the area is still a problem and the demand is big.

Hospice Kaipara have held their second annual car poker run as part of Hospice Awareness week.

The event attracted approximately 50 vehicles with participants starting at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, heading into Dargaville shopping centre, across to Ernie’s Kumara box and on to the campground at Glinks Gully for afternoon tea prepared by Noeline Gatehouse from Ruawai. The event ended at the Aratapu Tavern with final fundraising figures yet to be confirmed.

“It was great to see a group of motorbikes arrive showing their support amongst the cars and they added to the variety which was nice. We really appreciated seeing them,” said organiser Pamela Barton.

“Hot rods, vintage, classic and modern cars all joined in the day. At each stop players were given a playing card which was recorded and at the end of the run the person with the best

poker hand was deemed the winner.

The people’s choice award went to an orange Monaro.”

Dargaville newcomer Michelle Bennett took the opportunity to shave her head in support of hospice.

“This was my way of saying thank you.

I have experienced how good they are at supporting others,” said Michelle.

Family friend Dan Sabine, came from Papakura to support her and decided to shave his beard, they raised $250 together.

“We would like to thank the Dargaville Hot Rod club and Ernie Suckling and the Kumara Box and Donice and Richard at the Aratapu Tavern for helping organise the event,” said Pamela. “We appreciate all those who participated, making this such a successful day and we look forward to next year.” ¢

Dargaville’s Nico Te Whata, has placed first in his division in the Northland Secondary School Sports Association fitness competition.

The Te Kapehu Whetu school student’s mother says his “hard work and full time training schedule” has paid off, by coming first out of eight 15 and 16-year-olds in the junior varsity men’s division. There were about 45 competitors in the whole event.

The 15-year-old came second in the same competition last year and his trainer Ness Lawgun of Far North CrossFit says he is always keen to increase his strength and capabilities.

It was whilst boarding in Whangarei that Nico first attended CrossFit classes.

New truck for Hospice Kaipara

Te Kopuru water Last year the ratepayers of Te Kopuru asked the council for accountability for our target wastewater rates, since then we have had a 100% increase in this rate with no explanation.

A loan was also taken out for the wastewater system without any consultation with the Te Kopuru ratepayers. To try and understand what has been going on with the wastewater finances we had one day looking at the council books and would be charged $80 an hour to look again. We have been shut out. With

thousands of dollars of Te Kopuru target rates not accounted for it looks like we are used as a cash cow for the council and with 180+ ratepayers asking for accountability for the wastewater system one should expect council to account and all moneys not accounted for returned to the Te Kopuru ratepayers or held in trust.

The Te Kopuru wastewater system has been paid for by this town belongs to this town and this town has asked for accountability.

Kaipara District Council reply Re: Letter from Mr K Ladbrook, Te Kopuru Over the past couple of years Council staff and Commissioners have met with Te Kopuru community members on several occasions. As a result of these meetings the community have been given a substantial amount of comprehensive information.

The targeted rate applied for wastewater is for the operating costs of the Te Kopuru Wastewater Scheme.

The operating charge covers the cost of works necessary to keep the system in good working order, and includes

the costs to meet Northland Regional Council resource consent conditions.

Each year the Council releases a proposed plan outlining the expenditure and resulting level of targeted rates for all water and wastewater systems in Kaipara, for public consultation.

Feedback is encouraged. This occurred in March/April this year.

Given the amount of information that has been provided to the community the Council is unsure what further information could be given.

It is Hospice Awareness Week May 18–24 and many people think of hospice services as just a building, when in fact it is a philosophy of care. Most hospice services have inpatient facilities, but the majority of people are cared for in their homes.

The Hospice Kaipara have purchased a new truck to help make the delivery and collection of equipment to hospice patients easier.

“The larger vehicle will allow volunteer workers to fit more items per load and will also be used to collect large donated items and delivery of furniture for the charity shop,” said manager of volunteer services Jayne Walker.

“We are asking the community to support the running of the truck by purchasing advertising on it.

Dargaville’s Hikuwai O Kaipara Waka Ama are aiming to attend the seven kilometre novice race at the upcoming Matariki celebrations in Parua Bay, Whangarei, on Saturday June 20.

The Ruawai Promotions and Development Group are presenting their first harvest dinner on June 6 to bring the community together during a lull in the rural calendar.

“Waka Ama on the Northern Wairoa was established four years ago because I noticed many communities had the sport but Dargaville did not, yet we are a river town, and we have the perfect assets to establish a large club,” said chairperson Archie McCahon.

“Add into that the prime location of Kai Iwi Lakes, and it gives us both the challenges of river paddling and the safety of a beautiful freshwater lake location to practise on.

“What has really made waka ama hum this year is the community support. Every Thursday afternoon a youth programme attracts 25–30 high school students and adults are showing interest also. There are regularly two adult teams paddling on Thursday nights and Sunday mornings.“ Archie says the experienced paddlers, including youth, are showing their leadership skills and are passing on their knowledge, teaching the new members.

“We are here summer and winter as long as the weather permits. Anyone is welcome to come along and get on board.

“The club teaches the skills needed on the water for the sport and we will start to travel soon and experience more of the competitions available

such as the Matariki celebrations.” He says the group couldn’t achieve what they do, without community support, and Hikuwai O Kaipara Waka Ama Club wishes to thank those involved over the last four years.

Farewell to an artist

Mangawhai Artists Group farewelled a friend, committee member, vice president and a lifetime member, with an artist’s guard of honour at her large funeral gathering after Marie Flavell passed away at her home on May 3 surrounded by her family.

“Marie was an integral part of the artists group from the very beginning,” said current group president, Jeanette Vickers.

“She participated in all the Art Trails and opened her home for many years as a venue for all artists to exhibit. Her beautiful and colourful flax weaving pieces, ketes, table mats, wall hangings, and flax flowers grace many homes in Mangawhai and beyond.

“Marie did more than weave flax. She wove people together as well, with the same love and connectivity she had for her flax. She was generous and giving.

Whenever a gift was to be found for

that special person or group she always put her hand up and created something symbolic and special.

“She really lived every day. ‘If you don’t go, you’ll never know,’ she used to say.

“She appreciated her family and surroundings and felt really blessed to wake up every morning living in paradise. Her love and pride in her six children and grandchildren was very evident.

“Marie will be remembered by many, especially the artists group for being a gutsy, positive, helpful and very wise woman.” ¢

Dargaville nine year old Miya Pirini is a keen swimmer, tennis and netball player. She is not keen on staying in bed, but has no choice while she recovers from rheumatic fever.

“Miya had mouth ulcers and a really sore throat,” said her mother Nicky.

“She was put on a course of antibiotics in February, which was completed, but she didn’t bounce back to her active self. She would come home from school and fall asleep.

“Every few days she was saying she was sore and I just brushed it off thinking they were growing pains.”

A ‘spider web’ rash appeared and she found it difficult to walk. Miya revisited the doctor’s who discovered a heart murmur at the Whangarei Hospital emergency department and she was flown to Starship and diagnosed with rheumatic fever. She stayed for five days before returning to Whangarei hospital on strict bedrest.

She now uses a wheelchair so no strain is put on her heart and must have a monthly injection of penicillin which will continue until she is 21.

Doctors are yet to decide when Miya can go home.

Nicky says, “I knew that a sore throat could break hearts but I didn’t know about the other signs of rheumatic fever. If your child has

a sore throat make sure you get it swabbed.”

Dargaville Medical Centre are offering a free throat swabbing programme for children and young people 4–19 years-of-age and for other members of their family aged 3–35 years.

Rheumatic fever is a serious illness that can start after a sore throat.

Pupils of Kings School of Dance in Aratapu are receiving world class demi pointe shoes which will help keep their feet in top condition.

When dance teacher Sonja King felt some of her students were ready to begin pointe work, she scoured the country for Grishko ballet shoes, one of the highest quality shoes worldwide, and worn by prestigious Russian ballerinas.

When she discovered there was an outlet right here in New Zealand, JuonPointe, she set about organising a fitting for some of her students.

The shoes are designed to keep feet in optimum condition to minimise any disfigurement or damage that is common in the ballet world.

The students attended a workshop with specific exercises for correct alignment and stance and learnt the art of taping the feet to provide correct posture.

“It has been a real eye opener for me getting to see the change in the girls’ feet, in just a short time as a result from the exercises and taping,” says Sonja.

“Professional dancers feet can become extremely damaged and so the correct footwear is essential. The exercises are beneficial for not just ballet, but many types of dancing, including jazz.”

The students aged 10 to 13-years-old, held a cupcake stall to raise funds for the workshop. The dancers were fitted the following day. The shoes themselves cost just over $140 for a pair.

“The shoes are designed slightly differently from those in Russia, with New Zealand feet in mind.” ¢

Wellsford Rockers have kept rock ’n’ roll alive with their Monday night lessons at the Cooperative Church Hall on Rodney Street and will soon celebrate their second birthday.

Kaiwaka resident Siobhan Cole is giving back to the community through monthly charity boot camps held at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex.

“We are a passionate group of people interested in music and clothing of the 1950s. We love people and like the social side of teaching others to dance.

Siobhan runs regular group training classes on the sports field of the complex twice weekly and will be holding a charity event once every month to raise money for different community organisations.

“The first charity boot camp was for the Kaiwaka Fire Brigade which was quite successful.

“We managed to raise about $350 for them. The next month we raised money for the IHC house,” she said.

“The workouts aren’t too hard but they are challenging.

“It is broken up for all levels of fitness as lots of people just come to support the organisations. We play a lot of games and children can come along too.
