p Dargaville Primary School came up in bright colours to support the Kind Hands respite cottage charity last Friday, raising money for a cause, which assists children with disabilities, medical conditions and dependence on technology for their health. The non-uniform day was the idea of educator Jackie McGlasson. It was enthusiastically embraced by the faculty and students, some of whom know peers and relatives who have benefitted from Kind Hands and its mission to provide support and relief for Northland families.

The chair of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee, the group that acts as stewards of Kai Iwi Lakes and its surrounds, has quit in protest against a plan he says could spell extinction for one of New Zealand’s rarest creatures. Councillor Jonathan Larsen has resigned effective immediately, leaving Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith to front the two remaining meetings of his tenure. In a detailed letter to the mayor, Councillor Larsen explained his reasons for the shock departure, centred around the fate of the dune lake galaxiids (DLG) — a fish only found in the Kaipara’s dune lake biome. He opines that evidence shows that trout, introduced into the lakes for anglers to catch, suppress the population of another introduced fish, the
gambusia, which devours the galaxiids if left unchecked. “Trout release into Lake Kai Iwi was discontinued in 2001 at the request of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee and iwi,” says Councillor Larsen. “This lake is now completely overwhelmed with gambusia, and DLG are now apparently extinct in this lake.” In 2020 and 2021, Fish and Game’s requests to introduce new trout populations into neighbouring Lake Waikare and Lake Taharoa were rejected. Trout populations in these lakes are now

likely to have reached zero. Galaxias levels have been confirmed as ‘low’ at the previous meeting of the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee, and Councillor Larsen believes this is a precursor to their extinction. “I do not wish to be party to the potential unnecessary and avoidable extinction of an indigenous species but am powerless to change the direction being taken by council and the Taharoa Domain Governance Committee,” said Mr Larsen, tendering his immediate resignation. ¢
