Supporting the supporters  In support of the Kaipara Hospice, 40 vehicles including motorcycles participated in the annual car rally and travelled from Dargaville through to Parakao, Maungatapere and Tangowahine before returning to Dargaville for prize-giving and celebrating the Hospice Kaipara shop’s 10th birthday. “It was a good way to kick off Hospice Awareness week. We had fantastic weather and everyone enjoyed themselves,” said administrator Pamela Barton.

“The shop raises a significant amount of funds which stays right here in the Kaipara and helps to purchase necessary equipment which are not covered by the Ministry of Health. We appreciate everyone who is involved with what we do to help others in our community.”

 Dargaville Primary School kids show off the fruit and veggies inside their lunch boxes. Almost 1,000 pieces of fruit and vegetables have been devoured in less than one school term by student’s Room 4 at Dargaville Primary school and the health benefits have been huge. Teacher Judy Harding says students set their own healthy eating goals at the beginning of last term as part of Sport Northland’s Energize programme. The goal was for students to eat 800 pieces of fruit and vegetables in their lunch by the end of the term. However she says by week eight they had dined on just over 900 pieces.

 The Old Mount Wesley Cemetery was host to a special gathering this month as the descendants of Mangawhare’s first baker, Thomas Charles Hawkins, gathered to unveil a new plaque in his memory. Mr Hawkins drowned in the Northern Wairoa River on March 16, 1878 as he was trialling a yacht. “It was quite an emotional service,” said Mr Hawkin’s great-granddaughter Rossie Rowse.

“It was nice for two branches of the family to come together for the first time as they are based in Auckland and Waikato now. It was quite moving.”

New CEO to lead new council

Ruawai Primary School have won the Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s (KNZB) annual Wall Worthy competition with their artwork titled ‘The Tale of Five Brothers/Te pakiwaitara e rima nga tungane’.

The Wall Wor thy competition is in its sixth year and celebrates our communities, local legends and unheard stories in a way that will visually improve the environment. KNZB asked schools to submit what makes their town or school unique and illustrate how they would tell their story  Ruawai Primary students Kyle Johnson, Angel Selby Lye, through a painted mural.

Farewelling a legend

Celebrations of Matariki

The Kaipara community is farewelling a tireless volunteer and noted rugby coach, Daniel ‘Blackie’ Walters, who died in a motor vehicle accident on Friday, May 13 on State Highway 12, south of Mamaranui.

Mr Walters will be missed by his wife Piki and four children Harry, Melanie, Luanne, Mandy and their grandchildren, as well as the rugby and wider community.

‘Blackie’ was Dargaville Old Boys’ club captain and senior A coach. The Northland Rugby Union paid tribute last weekend with all players observing a minute’s silence before their games and wearing black armbands.

Mr Walters’ funeral is set for Wednesday, May 18 at the Oturei Marae, Dargaville at 11am.

Northern Wairoa Rugby farewelled another wellknown member last week with Ian Condon passing.

Mr Condon had been coaching and refereeing for more than three decades and was a committee member of the Dargaville Rugby Club and the Northland Rugby Referees Association. 

LOOKING BACK TO LOOK FORWARD

W

ith local body elections scheduled for October, looking back to what has happened over the last three years – and forward to the challenges ahead – is timely, says local regional councillor Graeme Ramsey.

Graeme (who has announced that he is not standing for re-election this year) sees this as a time for the Kaipara to take stock and prepare for the challenges ahead.

He believes there is a unique opportunity to make real gains dealing with problems that have beset Northland for decades.

“Government is taking an interest in the North. We have made real progress on infrastructure issues recently and there is an opportunity to make even more. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has been persuaded to get planning underway for the four-lane highway all the way through to Whangarei. It has designated Mangakahia Road as a State Highway, which massively reduces the financial cost to Northland. In addition NZTA has doubled the increase in local maintenance funding compared to the rest of the country. This is a good effort, but more is required.”

The Northland Regional Council is poised to release a draft of a single

plan that will update and replace its current Water and Soil, Air Quality and Coastal Plans.

“Council is aiming to raise the bar on environmental issues, but to do so in an economically responsible way. We cannot proceed faster than our ability to pay and we must ensure the viability of the industries on which we rely.”

Graeme, who is council’s Deputy Chairman, has chaired the committee developing the plan, which has been more than two years in the making.

“Council is trying to assist coming to grips with the impacts of climate change.

The consequences of sea level changes and increased flooding are being mapped and distributed to help people prepare.

Council is also making big advances in flood protection works across the region. These include the new $11 million detention dam in Whangarei, better protection for Kaitaia township, as well as the first stage of Kaeo’s flood control scheme. Continued work will need to be done as increasingly we see the effects of climate change, including more severe weather events.”

In the environmental arena, council has increased its Environment Fund by $250,000 annually.

Graeme says we must continue to

address environmental degradation and, in particular, water quality issues in Northland. He believes more resources will be required.

“Our environment is why people have come here and it is one that we need to safeguard and, in many cases, remedy.

Fencing waterways, riparian planting, sediment reduction and erosion control are all important.”

Northland has secured more than $650,000 for soil conservation initiatives in the Kaipara Harbour catchment area.

“It is important that we address the state of the Kaipara Harbour.

Currently, at low tide more than 40 percent of the harbour is exposed as mud bank or sand bank. Much of this is a result of 150 years of high levels of sedimentation impacting this ecologically and socially important harbour.”

A joint political committee to coordinate all council activity on the harbour has recently been formed and work is being undertaken in priority catchments.

“A real question is how we take the Kaipara District forward. Northland is in great danger of exacerbating a two-speed economy, with development on the east and little on the west. It is hoped that the revitalisation of the

Twin Coast Discovery route and work on tourism will have a positive effect. We are also investigating irrigation and water management projects in the western part of the district. However, these are long-term projects and need sustained commitment from both communities and councils,” Graeme says.

“Overall, the Northland Regional Council has made some significant steps, helped by central government politicians and a government which is taking notice of Northland. We must keep the momentum going.”

Signs to boost cycle trail profile  by Ayla Miller

Bicycle enthusiasts will now be guided by brand new route markers in a move to increase the profile of two cycle trails showcasing the best of the Kaipara and encourage economic development in the region.

The Kauri Coast and Kaipara Missing Link cycle ways are among New Zealand Cycle Trail Heartland Rides which link the Great Rides together.

Kaipara District Council policy analyst, Mark Schreurs, hopes the sign posts will motivate people to get on their bikes and appreciate what the Kaipara has to offer.

A place to call home Owning a house is just a dream for many low income working families but Habitat for Humanity is hoping to make it a reality as they begin their search for a seventh partner family in the Dargaville area.

Habitat for Humanity will hold an ownership meeting in Dargaville this month to provide information regarding the latest house to be built in Plover Close.

Operations manager, Diane Coleman, urges families interested in becoming a Habitat homeowner to attend the meeting and learn more about the programme.

“Home ownership is getting out of so many people’s reach now that often they don’t have the money to afford a deposit. Habitat for Humanity can give people a hand up to homeownership that they wouldn’t normally be able to do on their own,” she says.

A partner family for the threebedroom home will then be chosen and the family members will start their ‘sweat equity’. Once the construction of the house is complete, they will begin making affordable, regular repayments to Habitat.

Abandoned felines find homes

The Kaipara Kitty Haven animal shelter based in Dargaville has rescued, desexed and re-homed nearly 100 abandoned cats and kittens since it opened in 2014.

A group of school children want to reignite the famous Kiwi catchphrase — Be a tidy Kiwi — after discovering massive amounts of rubbish on their local beaches.

Founder of the haven, SamiJade Vanbuskirk, says there is no SPCA in the district so there was a desperate need to provide some kind of shelter.

Dargaville Intermediate school students, Logan Eyles and Benjamin Worn, recently set about cleaning up the coastline on a school project experiencing marine reserves, and were shocked with the amount of rubbish they collected.

The boys along with two family friends, Becky Raleigh and Danny Lowe, found a large number of bottles, plastic containers, rope, an old crayfish pot, a tyre, plastic bags and nylon.

“There’s a lot of plastic rubbish out there. We couldn’t believe it and there was heaps of foreign items from China and overseas on our beach,” said Logan.

“Even just one little piece of poly can kill a sea creature, and a string of nylon can strangle a fish,” added Benjamin.

Their message is that Kiwis need to start taking better care of their own back yard.

“The time it took us to collect all the rubbish was an hour-and-a-half, and if everybody did that once a month the beach would be spotless. Our message is — Be a tidy Kiwi,” says Logan.

Washing and sorting clothes is no chore for seven year old Stevie-Raye who just loves giving back to her community.

Kaiwaka is known as the little town of lights but it’s fast becoming known as the little town of good sorts as well, thanks to a group of locals working hard to do good in their community.

Janine Boult launched the organisation Kaiwaka Cares a little over a year ago and in that time she and a group of volunteers have revived the community gardens and opened a drop in centre — with free wifi and much more.

“We wanted to provide a space so people know that they belong. The drop in centre is a space where people can connect with other people, which if you are by yourself is huge. There have been some great friendships that have started here. It’s that emotional connection to other people.”

“As much as they say it takes a village to raise a child it really does take a community to care for each

other.” Janine says without the help of a hardworking team of volunteers Kaiwaka Cares simply wouldn’t exist.

“Like any community we rely on volunteers to make a difference in our day-to-day lives in Kaiwaka.

Often it is the small things that make a community great, and for us the volunteers give of themselves to make that small difference in the lives of the people we interact with in our work.”

When Kaiwaka Cares aren’t using their social space, they allow the community to use it for other things such as employment skills courses, massage and holistic practices. The Drop-in-Centre is open 10am to 2pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 

The youngster is working for a good cause. Plunket Kits for Kids is a initiative run by Plunket which aims to provide a kit filled with clothing to families in need in the Kaipara region.

Stevie-Raye knows first hand the difference that giving can have on a person’s life after losing her family home in a house fire two years ago. Soon after, the community rallied around to help her family and it made sense to the youngster to return the favour.

“I like helping people just like my mum does, because some kids don’t have as much as others and it’s a nice feeling to be able to help out. “  Stevie-Raye sorting through clothes to be put into a Stevie-Raye’s mum, kit to give away to families in need Plunket community support coordinator Tina Ball, says that it’s just tears of joy when they receive the kits — they were just so grateful.” To true that you reap what you sow.

Wellsford Boxing Club member, Tui Vea, competed in the Open Lightweight Youth category against Jayden Downs, the current New Zealand Champion and NZ Representative for the World Championships at the Supercity Boxing Tournament last week and won his fight.

“Tui is sixteen years old and is a very talented young man. I am really pleased with his performance. He took up the challenge and won,” said coach Fili Maka.

“It was a close fight and very hard. He will be going to the Nationals in Rotorua this year and hopes to be placed to represent New Zealand at the Youth World Championships in Russia.”

Fili says Tui’s boxing was up and down and he didn’t have a lot of vision for a positive life. Last year he moved from Auckland to Tomarata and the community has been really positive for him.

Breakfast Club coordinator, fondly known as Milo, said she has seen a lot of improvements since in the children’s concentration.

“Anyone can come, it is not always because students are hungry, some come along to top up after already eating at home.

“They love it, to them it’s cool to come together and eat and have a hot cup of milo before class. It’s about looking after growing bodies. It’s all positive and the volunteers do it for the love of it. The concentration of the students who did need breakfast has definitely improved.

We also offer lunches. The children can come to a table in the office through a back door so it remains anonymous and make a sandwich for lunch. It is really encouraging to know they do help themselves.

“KidsCan is a great organisation.

Just last week we received 372 fleece lined raincoats from them. This was enough for one for every student and in time for winter. It is thanks to KidsCan, our sponsors and volunteers that our students get to encounter these positive situations at an early age. It is good for the community.” 

Surviving in the cooler months ahead During the winter months it is especially important to make sure you, your family and your home, keeps warm, healthy and dry.

It is especially important to eat the five recommended fruits and vegetables per day during the cooler part of the year as this will help to keep your immune system in top working order and ward off any bugs that might be going around schools or workplaces. Make sure to wash hands before eating, and take sick days if you do catch a cold.

Keeping your house warm and dry is another simple way to survive the cooler months especially if you have young children or elderly people living with you.

Cold and damp homes are linked to ill health. Try heating one room at a time rather than the whole house as this cuts down on the cost of power.

Before going to bed make sure your room is warm. It is recommended the bedroom should be between 18 and 21 degrees, and ensure you and your family are dressed warmly and have enough blankets to stay at a comfortable temperature all night. Up to 20 per cent of heating can be lost through drafts.

Blocking unused chimneys and draughts around doors can make a considerable difference to the temperature of your home.

Try making your own draught snakes by putting old socks in rugby socks or filling stockings with newspaper.

Make the most of sunny days here in the ‘winterless North’ by opening windows and letting fresh air circulate through the house. This minimises mould and dries any condensation that might have accumulated over night.

Drying clothes outside eliminates moisture from the house and sunlight kills harmful bacteria.

Open windows when showering or cooking and keep bedroom doors closed during this time to eliminate your bed absorbing any excess moisture from the air.

Civilisations have been founded on it, wars have been fought over it — but access to good clean water is sometimes taken for granted here in water-rich New Zealand.

The innocuous blend of hydrogen and oxygen is the stuff of life, making up the greater part of our bodies. But water matters are often overlooked, especially when it comes to the quality of water entering our homes. Recent controversies such as that in Flint, Michigan in the United States, have highlighted the need for reliably pure water, but how can one ensure that the water coming from sources like tanks and bores is safe to drink? And, if it’s not causing immediate signs of illness, is there really any problem?

Pump specialist Todd Mullinder and qualified plumber Grant Low have seen and resolved a large number of water issues in their time, working to keep the taps flowing in Kaipara homes. Todd alone has been working with water for over 14 years and he says that almost all tank systems have weak spots in their defenses, letting in nasties like

E coli and giardia. He says that leaf litter, residue from guttering, and even animal and bird excreta or remains can work their way into the holding tank.

Sources such as bores may seem pure, but impurities can leach in as the water travels underground, or even at the source.

It’s best to be safe, because waterborne illnesses may not have immediate visible symptoms, but are still damaging the body.

Levels of impurity may rise and fall with the seasons, too. Water can be checked on request by your local medical professionals, for a modest fee. And the solution — good plumbers always stock filtration systems to remove detritus and disease from your water supply. A combination of a microfine filter with a powerful UV light will act as a shield for you and your family and needs minimal servicing. 

TE ROROA WHATU ORA & MANAWHENUA TRUSTS PROHIBITION (RĀHUI) NOTICE FOR THE ISSUING OF PERMITS TO HARVEST TOHEROA A Hui was held at Te Houhanga Marae, Dargaville in August 2014 to discuss the serious decline of Toheroa on Ripiro beach. The decision was made to place a rāhui on the taking of Toheroa on Ripiro beach from Maunganui Bluff to Tikitiki stream to help revive the critically depleted beds.

Notice is hereby given by the Te Roroa Whatu Ora Trust and Manawhenua Board that there will be no issuing of permits to harvest Toheroa due to the decline and reducing stock numbers.
