Residents of the Kauri Coast Care Home and Hospital celebrated along with thousands of other Kiwis on Saturday, as King Charles III was officially crowned monarch of the Commonwealth. Tables were set up with a full panoply of silverware and treats. A life-sized cardboard cutout of the new King greeted residents to a celebratory high tea, organised by manager Karen Duncan and diversional therapist Shona Anderson. Some of the Kauri Coast whānau were there to witness the coronation of the former Queen; Dot James recalls travelling to witness the royal visit in 1953, just after her own wedding. Saturday’s engagement brought some fun and a slice of history to residents, who enjoyed taking part in a commemoration of the auspicious day.
