The International Rally of Whangarei is running from May 17 to 19, using roads through Kaipara from a Whangarei base. The event involves more than 500 volunteers from local communities and surrounding areas serving in stage marshalling, timing, service park crew, washdown, safety and at rally headquarters, who receive half the income from spectator ticket sales. A rally course of 288.16km has been partitioned into 16 special stages and spectators will see a line-up of top drivers, including Hayden Paddon and codriver John Kennard who won in 2011. Finland’s Esapekka Lappiand, with his co-driver, Janne Ferm, and Indian, Gaurav Gill, with his New Zealand-based codriver, Glenn Macneal, will be joined by teams from Australia, Japan and France. A number of Kaipara service clubs have come forward to volunteer marshals out in the field. “Ensuring our fans and potential fans have both a safe and enjoyable experience requires using common sense — guided by our trained marshals,” said rally spokesman Laurie Brenssell. Members of the Maungaturoto cooperative, made up of eight separate community groups assist the event by providing marshalling and course preparation services. Each stage will be manned by members drawn from a mix of the Maungaturoto Country Club, Paparoa

Lions, Mid Western Lions, Maungaturoto St John Ambulance, Marohemo Hall supporters, Kamo Lions and Kaipara Hunt club’s. “They do the whole stage preparation, from distributing notification letters to the road residents in the months prior to the event, to taping up gates, driveways and junctions on the day, to marshalling intersections and even providing food stalls at some of the major spectator points,” said Maungaturoto co-operative chairman, Vern Dark. “In the twenty years the co-operative has been operating at this level we have received nearly three quarters of a million dollars, that’s been returned to the community. So for us the rally is

an important part of our fundraising for local projects.” The rally action starts from Whangarei on Saturday May 18 over roads around Parahi, Waipu Caves and Brooks — including the ‘Hella’ jump on Swamp Rd. The route is repeated in the afternoon. Sunday’s section heads south through Waipu Gorge and on to Marohemo and Batley road, visiting Paparoa and Cassidy road before returning to Whangarei. The stages repeat in the early afternoon, returning for a ceremonial finish in Whangarei town basin from 3.15pm. A rally map, with clearly-marked spectator viewing points, is available free to download from the event website www.rallywhangarei.co.nz. ■
