Sailing towards a bright future by Ann Morgan
Ruawai College student, Hazel Hornell, has her sights set on being in an Olympic sailing team one day and is looking to encourage others in the Kaipara into the sport which has helped her create good friendships and taught her many water skills.

“I started sailing when I was 8 years old. I am now 17 years old and joined a club when we were living in Western Australia. We used little pelican yachts there. My dad saw kids on sailboats at his boss’s yacht club and asked if my sister and I wanted to learn. We said yes and haven’t looked back,” said Hazel. “Whilst there I was in three state titles.
My last state title I came 13th out of 34 boats which is quite good really.” Hazel has not met any other girls who participate in sailing in the Kaipara and travels to Whangarei to pursue the sport. “It is an easy sport to learn and really enjoyable. Those involved are really friendly and give good advice. I
sail a ‘laser’ olympic style boat. We travel to Whangarei because that’s the closest club for us. We mainly sail in the harbour because they are little yachts but we also go out to the open ocean on keelers which is a different experience again,” said Hazel. continued on page 3 …
