Ruawai College student, Hazel Hornell, has her sights set on being in an Olympic sailing team one day and is looking to encourage others in the Kaipara into the sport which has helped her create good friendships and taught her many water skills.

“I started sailing when I was 8 years old. I am now 17 years old and joined a club when we were living in Western Australia. We used little pelican yachts there. My dad saw kids on sailboats at his boss’s yacht club and asked if my sister and I wanted to learn. We said yes and haven’t looked back,” said Hazel.

“Whilst there I was in three state titles.

My last state title I came 13th out of 34 boats which is quite good really.”

Hazel has not met any other girls who participate in sailing in the Kaipara and travels to Whangarei to pursue the sport.

“It is an easy sport to learn and really enjoyable. Those involved are really friendly and give good advice. I

sail a ‘laser’ olympic style boat. We travel to Whangarei because that’s the closest club for us. We mainly sail in the harbour because they are little yachts but we also go out to the open ocean on keelers which is a different experience again,” said Hazel. continued on page 3 …

Cofounder Mary Bennett says the workshop has been hugely popular with around 70 kids taking part. “The kids love it — you just need to see the expressions on their faces, lots of laughs and giggles — they have a great time.” This year children made mini chocolate sculptures, lollypops and coated truffles, with the creative freedom to make personalised creations. James Te Tuhi of Te Kopuru is the second recipient of the Dune Restoration Trust of New Zealand’s Pingao and Toheroa Trophy which celebrates the exceptional contributions of an individual to coastal restoration.

Mr Te Tuhi received the award for his work restoring the West Coast dunes of Northland as well as his educational work sharing information and experience to schools and other groups.

Sailing towards a bright future “You don’t have to be wealthy to sail — it is an affordable sport. I don’t believe you need to buy the top gear either. I believe in getting people started and taught the skills of sailing before putting them in a top boat.

“I get to travel away as well. As part of the Whangarei Girls’ combined team we recently travelled to Algies Bay for the Secondary Schools Team Sailing National Championships. We placed 25th out of 35, fifth in the bronze fleet and seventh out of all the girls’ teams.

“I have learnt a lot of responsibility on the water and things like what to do if you tip your boat over. It builds confidence and it’s a good sport for parents to be able to come along and encourage their children. You can get involved with the rescue boats as well. “ Hazel is passionate about boats on the water and thinks it would be good if more people became involved with the search and rescue boats and volunteered their time to the cause.

“I’d like to get into an olympic team and maybe become a sailing coach here in Ruawai. Maybe I could work on superyachts and teach the owners how to sail. I have already completed one coaching course. It would be great to see sailing available here in the Kaipara. It would be good for the community. I am sure other youths

Fighting for success

The pink month

Throughout life Renata ‘Raz’ Poa, also known as The Kaipara Kid in the boxing ring, has had a fighting spirit, and the 29-yearold boxer and mixed martial arts fighter is determined to use this to reach her goals and inspire others.

Pink Ribbon month is upon us again and breakfasts and fundraising events are happening across the Kaipara in support of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

Kaipara born and bred, Renata began boxing nine years ago after snapping her achilles tendon and started punching a bag for exercise.

She was invited to take up the sport and has never looked back, recently competing in the Wellington Big Bash where she won her fight against Flo ‘Flo-Rida’ Samuels in the women’s heavyweight contest.

She says having to look after herself at a young age made her more determined to make something of her life.

She didn’t have time to party like her peers did or settle for what was happening around her at that time.

“I was a fighter back then and I am still fighting but in a more literal sense.”

Last year she met York Stone and Associates accounting firm director, Mike Stone, who now sponsors her fight gear and she has helped him drop 23 kilograms.

Mike says she is a ruthless trainer who wants to give back and he is pleased to support her. “Her nickname is Sergeant Major which speaks volumes.”

Renata says she has always liked coming back to places where people have helped her.

“I’m big on keeping that balance between give and take.”

Not one to sit back and relax, she has her sights set on competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, alongside her role model, American mixed martial artist and judoka, Ronda Rousey.

“Ronda inspires me and I want to keep inspiring people to never settle.

Even if you come from a small town you can go far,” Renata says. 

Mangawhai rates saga ends

The Dargaville Library is about to turn over a new leaf and the community is invited to have their say on its proposed new look.

Library manager Lisa Salter says she is excited about the proposed redesign and hopes the community takes the opportunity to be involved.

“This is a really neat opportunity that isn’t likely to happen again anytime soon.”

Mrs Salter says that since the library relocated to the corner of Normanby and Poto Street from the town hall, “we’ve been squashed.”

“Our customers have wanted us to address their issues and concerns about the library’s layout for some time. The long-running legal battle by Mangawhai’s ratepayers over Kaipara District Council rate hikes to pay for the town’s illstarred $57 million wastewater scheme is over.

The Supreme Court dismissed the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association application to appeal a High Court decision.

The High Court found the council increase in rates to pay for the Ecocare scheme cost blowout was lawful, despite the council illegally borrowing more than $50 million to fund the project.

The MRRA appeal to challenge that decision failed and with the latest ruling by the Supreme Court the MRRA’s fight is effectively over, with the association to pay costs to the council of $2,500.

The action has been costly for all concerned, with the council $1.08 million out of pocket to the end of March this year, and the MRRA putting its costs at $300,000.

The overall bill will increase with residual actions associated with the overall case still to be resolved.

Council chair of commissioners John Robertson said he welcomed the Supreme Court decision.

case.” The Supreme Court said the The Kaipara Validation Act validated rates and not council’s borrowings because the loans were deemed to be lawful under the protected transactions provisions of the Local Government Act 2002.

In turn the MRRA argued rates that were set by the council to pay for the wastewater scheme were unlawful because the purpose for which they were set was, itself, unlawful.

Supreme Court judges said the association’s argument could not succeed in the face of clear wording in the Local Government Act pertaining to protected transactions.

Ratepayers’ association chairman, Bruce Rogan, says members decided to fight the court battle because they believed significant moral and ethical issues needed to be determined.

“Perhaps the whole idea of local government election is an illusion for people to believe they have a say, when in fact they don’t,” he said.

The MRRA says while the legal option is over, it plans ‘a social media movement to convince parliament to restore representation and accountability in local government’.

COUNCIL WANTS YOUR FEEDBACK ON ANNUAL PLAN 2016/17 This year’s Annual Plan is providing some good news for ratepayers. While there aren’t significant changes from the second year of the Long Term Plan 2015 – 2025, the average rates increase is proposed to be lower than we stated in the Plan. Instead of 3.45 percent on average increase, the proposed average increase will be 2.94 percent.

We do not need to go through a formal consultation process for this year’s plan, with submissions and hearings. This change is because amendments to the Local Government Act 2002 recognises that often Annual Plans are not significantly different to what was consulted on in the Long Term Plan process.

Therefore it doesn’t make sense to consult again on plans already contained in the Long Term Plan 2015 - 2025.

However, we do want to know your thoughts on the small, but good, changes that are proposed. We are asking for your feedback, which will still be considered as part of finalising the Annual Plan 2016 – 2017. They are contained in our consultation document. In summary: Earlier this year, our two big wins were: • We have been able to reduce debt by $10 million including a settlement from the Office of the Auditor General.

• We joined the Local Government Funding Agency and therefore access to lower interest rates on our debt.

This means we need less funding to service this lower, and cheaper, debt which will fund the reduced rates increase.

There will still be rates increases higher than the average for commercial, dairying, some lifestyle blocks and some residential areas. The increases in the affected residential areas are because of increased investment in wastewater plants for both maintenance and operations where the plants are older.

While our emphasis is always on our core service, we are doing other interesting things around the district as well, which we’d like your feedback on. For instance • Placemaking’ in Kaiwaka and Dargaville. This is all about working with our communities to improve their towns and environments, to make them easier to live in, to enjoy and get around.

• In Mangawhai, we’re working with the community on a Mangawhai Town Plan to help us invest for growth. This is still in the early stages, and we’re looking forward to getting your views on the concepts so far.

Preserving Matakohe history

Digging in for Earth Day

The Kauri Museum is holding a Matakohe Mayday dinner and dance fundraiser at the Matakohe Community Hall on Saturday, May 21 at 6pm to support the Historic Totara House Preservation Appeal to help re-pile and weatherproof Totara house.

In honour of Earth Day members of the community have rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty to help ensure the future of the coasts Kauri trees and other native plants.

 Members of the community mucking in to help clean up the Kauri Coast nursery in Trouson Kauri Park  Totara House was bequeathed to the people of New Zealand by Mavis Smith

The 117-year-old kauri villa was the home of the pioneer Smith family who were founding members of the Kauri Museum, and to Mavis Smith who lived to 102.

Miss Smith bequeathed the home to the people of New Zealand through The Kauri Museum to be preserved and enjoyed by generations to come.

When she was 100-years-old she told her life story in the book ‘Child of the Kauri’ which is available for purchase at the Kauri Museum.

“Unlike many of New Zealand’s historic house museums, Totara House has retained much of its original furniture and furnishings, with only minor modifications made over time for

practical reasons,” said museum CEO, Lisa Tolich.

“We are very fortunate to have the benefit of Mavis Smith’s family recollections and anecdotes in print and oral history archives. It is these stories that continue to bring the house alive and are lovingly retold both in her own words and by those who knew Mavis best.”

The fundraiser will include canapes to start, a two-course meal, spot prizes and live entertainment from Shane and the Shazam Band. BYO tipples.

The Department of Conservation invited members of the community to help celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up their nursery at Trounson Park.

Biodiversity ranger, Megan Topia, said the turnout was pleasing and hoped that it might encourage more people to volunteer. “I hope we can continue to grow our volunteer programme and get as many community members involved in conservation as possible.”

Local parent, Kim Hill, took her children along. “It was nice to do something voluntary, especially with my kids, and know that we were doing something good for the community. It was a bonus for the day to meet a kiwi in its natural habitat.” To volunteer, contact your local DOC office. 

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Matakohe road improvements New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is planning to straighten SH12 through Matakohe to create a safer and more direct connection.

This part of the highway has tight corners and one-way bridges, which are a safety risk and cause delays for commercial freight vehicles. Improvements are likely to include realignment of this section, with new two-lane bridges and intersections to improve safety and access.

The annual Hospice Kaipara Poker Car Run is on this Sunday, May 15 starting at the Vintage Machinery Club, Harding Park Dargaville with registrations at 12.15–1pm.

If you like to listen to songs about trucks and small towns the Northern Wairoa Country Music Club Inc’s 40th Jubilee could be the place to be over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

Jean Finlayson has been involved with Hospice Kaipara for more than 20 years and says the rally is a much appreciated fundraiser for the organisation.

“I became involved with hospice because I enjoy caring for people. I decided volunteering would get me out of the house and I could learn how to be a carer properly,” said Jean.

“As a volunteer we don’t nurse the patients, we work in a support role and give the carers a break and do practical things like provide meals. The families become very much a part of our lives. ”We are celebrating the Hospice shop in Dargaville’s 10th birthday as well as the car rally fundraiser. We opened the shop to help fund and supply our own equipment so we could purchase what we need with our own finances.

Volunteers are rostered to suit when

they are available to help with the shop and we appreciate them and those who donate goods. This helps those in the community who can’t afford much to get things they need like a new mattress or bedding and clothes.”

Jean says their manager Jayne is fantastic to work alongside.

“She does a great job here in the Kaipara. Our team have a lot of laughs.

Volunteering is great fun, I wouldn’t change anything.

“This years car rally will be approximately 130 kilometres in total and is open to all custom, vintage, hot rod and specialty vehicles.

“All proceeds go to Hospice Kaipara with a cake cutting ceremony for the shop’s 10th birthday at the prize giving at the Northern Wairoa Hotel at 5.30pm.” 

 The Northern Wairoa Country Music Club Inc has a history of raising funds for good causes.

Here they are performing at a big concert in the late 1970s to raise funds for the Dargaville Fire Brigade

Club chairman Ken Foster says he’s looking forward to getting all the old crew together after his 36 years with the group.

“Just to get all the old ones back if we can, a lot have moved away, so it would be great to have them back.”

He adds the club has provided plenty of good times both playing music, hanging out with like-minded people and organising gigs to raise funds for the likes of the local fire station and

St Johns ambulance service. The club currently has 70–80 members and he’d like more.

“What we are missing is families, and we’d love for anyone that wants, to come along and play.”

The 40th Jubilee during June 4–6, takes place at the Dargaville Rugby Clubrooms. Country music legends, Kim Copedo and Annette Hawkins, will be performing along with other top talent. 

100-year-old, Ruawai born, Gordon Brown returned to the Kaipara from Auckland to celebrate his nephew’s 70th birthday and had the opportunity to drive a 1955 Chevy truck.

“One of the Dennis’ friends brought the Chevy around for us older guys to have a look at,” said Gordon.

“I got behind the wheel and took it for a spin, it was great. She has beautiful power and was nearly as good as the Lamborghini I drove recently around the Hampton Downs race track. I have worked with cars all my life and am still driving at 100 years and four months old. Hopefully I can drive it again when

I am 101 years old.” Gordon says age doesn’t slow him down at all and he still loves driving cars.

“I grew up on a farm which my father had to break in from swamp. When I was young I would spend a lot of time at the local garage. I was known in the area as the ‘fix it’ boy. I was always interested in mechanics. I left Ruawai when I was 20-years-old.

“I started my first business there when I was 17 years old as a mechanic but when hard times hit people couldn’t

RETIREMENT LIFESTYLE Taking the long view on elder care  by Andy Bryenton

As our population shifts due to an ageing mass demographic and the migration of retirement lifestyle seekers into the Kaipara, the spotlight is not just on facilities to put more life in your years — but on exceptional care for the ‘sunset decade’ as well.

In their quest for healthier living, members of the Ruawai community have come together as a group in their adventure to a better lifestyle.

“I was approached by a couple of local girls to see if they could train with me at the gym and help them try to lose some weight so we started a competition amongst ourselves to see who can lose the most,” said participant Shannon Price.

Shannon is a registered nurse and already works out.

“We have ended up with a group of 20 people supporting each other. We bring our own exercises on Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. Everyone has their own reasons for participating. They don’t get checked up on, it is up to them how far they go. Others are always welcome to join us.”

Shannon says it is more circuit training and having fun together.

“Having support whilst losing weight is really encouraging. All the feedback I have had is really positive.”

The precision to work smarter On initial inspection, Makita’s new SP6000 plunge cut saw looks like a regular woodworking circular saw, albeit with a far more complicated base plate. But the way this innovative tool works, especially in tandem with its precise rail system, means that it may very well replace the saw bench in your workshop — at least for those tricky jobs.

The SP6000 is able to effortlessly make laser-straight cuts in even small sections of wood. It can work as a breakdown saw as well as making precise angled incisions, and can even, as its name suggests, begin to cut in the middle of a sheet of wood, making cabinetry in the home a whole lot easier.

To demonstrate the power of Makita’s latest offering, the saw whipped through the process of making a brand new section of window frame to suit a classic Northland villa — all in less than half an hour.

Now that’s usually a job for the pros — and it can be expensive. A window frame requires precise, stepped cuts to fit into its surround, as well as a lip to accommodate glass and putty. The SP6000, working with a pair of manual clamps and a standard workbench, was able to turn out this precision piece of work so easily for three reasons. Firstly, its blade is a far cry from the ripping teeth of a conventional mitre saw or

circular saw. Many razor-sharp tiny teeth make light work of even hard woods, thanks to a variable speed motor. What it leaves behind is a freshcut surface which needs no sanding or finishing — just install and paint.

That’s not the only thing which can be adjusted to ensure a perfect cut.

As the entire saw is spring-loaded inside its carriage, it’s possible to set its cutting depth within millimetres. It’s also possible to adjust the angle of the cut on a diagonal, which has many obvious benefits.

Common angles such as 45 degrees are preset to ‘click’ into place. All of which is excellent, and means it’s possible to make clean cuts with the wood itself held stationary — far easier than manipulating the wood through a static blade.

But the system becomes even better when the rail is deployed, allowing for over three metres of absolutely diestraight cutting.
