p The 2022 Tour of Aotearoa cycling event rolled through Kaipara last week, with approximately 300 cyclists taking to the roads in a quest to reach Bluff within 30 days. The tour is a biannual event that challenges cyclists to traverse the length of the nation with only the supplies they can carry in a backpack, all within one month. Dargaville is on the route as the riders come out of the Waipoua Forest and head for Auckland.

A new mountain bike adventure park just outside Dargaville has moved from planning to practical construction as community groups pitch in to bring it to fruition.

The Babylon Coast Road facility sits within a 440-hectare pine forest. Kaipara Cycling Inc has secured the plantation with a 20-year lease.

“The forest will have a family focus, trails for beginners to learn on with progression to more difficult trails,” says Dargaville cycling advocate Sadie Cogan.

“The aim is to have a quality park the locals will enjoy in their own backyard. We also want to encourage other riders from around the country to come and visit.”

To plan out the many kilometres of trails that will criss-cross the forest park, the cycling enthusiasts have brought on board professional trail designer Ryan Lovett.

Local cycling club members have been hard at work during the late summer, trimming and pruning trees along these trails in anticipation of an excavator’s

arrival, saving $3 a metre on the cost of building them. The excavator itself has been purchased outright for the project, with the support of Kauri Coast Shuttles.

Local contributors include Time To, Douglas Logging, Serah Mehrtens and Danielle Te Waiti, Aztec Aluminium and Glass and Greenheart Forestry, which have completed a parking area with fences, gates and bike squeeze gates.

The Lion Foundation has donated $5,000 towards a composting toilet facility.

Organisers plan to raise funds by selling naming rights to the trails, and by offering the opportunity to become a friend of the park for a $100 donation. Assistance in pruning and cutting is also gratefully accepted, with working bees happening each week, arranged via Kaipara Cycling and Time To in Dargaville. ¢

A recent nationwide consultation on renewable energy sources by national grid owner Transpower has suggested that a special renewable energy zone should be established to concentrate renewable power generation.

Transpower suggests staging the pilot scheme of this kind in Northland.

For this reason, local councils, iwi and electricity providers are aligning to discuss the possibilities. The Kaipara District Council was briefed on the idea last week by the region’s electricity providers.

“Over the last two years, Transpower, Top Energy and Northpower have received dozens of applications from generation developers, totalling nearly two gigawatts of renewable generation,” says Northpower CEO Andrew McLeod. “That’s enough to power over 375,000 households, with some to spare.”

Renewable energy is already here in the form of geothermal generation capacity at Ngawha. Still, the schemes Mr McLeod refers to span other sources such as wind and solar.

“This project is really about asking how we create more capacity,” said Top Energy’s chief executive Russell Shaw.

“This can create more jobs; high tech jobs through the construction and maintenance of these assets.

“It’s not a green light for generation companies not to go through the normal resource consenting process.

It’s just about how we group the costs

of the transmission connection to support a number of generators.”

It has been confirmed that further discussion on the establishment of renewable energy sources will be undertaken as part of the District Plan review briefing this week. Mayor Jason Smith thanked the power company CEOs for their input on this opportunity. ¢

As weekday surf life saving patrols finish up across Northland, the newly formed Surf Life Saving Baylys Beach is reflecting on a busy first year.

The west coast club officially became affiliated with Surf Life Saving New Zealand for 2022, becoming the newest surf life saving club in the country. In previous years the beach had been patrolled under the auspices of the allied Ruakākā Surf Life Saving Club.

She was officially introduced during the Kaipara District Council briefing last Wednesday.

“I am looking forward to continuing to be connected with communities and building capability and capacity of our emergency operation centre and staff,” Laura says.

She will assist the council with Civil Defence matters and be working alongside CDEM manager Graeme MacDonald and Darlene Lang, KDC general manager for customer experience.

Her current focus is on relationships with emergency services and communities.

There is a need for people to prepare for the possibility of an emergency event.

“Simple things like an emergency kit and water are actions we can do for

ourselves,” CDEM secretary-administrator Eileen Parsons says.

“Have you built up supplies? We need people to be prepared. It may be at least 12 hours until we can assist. It is about communities doing things for themselves when something goes wrong.”

The group is rebuilding post-Covid and is establishing what it will look like in 2022. The team is encouraging people to get involved to be part of the new committee.

The collective creates tailored plans and gives extra support when needed within the community. They work with the council and other organisations in the event of a civil emergency.

The CDEM group has a meeting on Thursday, March 17 at 5.30pm at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall for anyone interested in joining. ¢

Renewable Energy Zones are often located in regions abundant in renewable electricity resources, but may be some distance from electricity networks making individual connections to get the power out costly and difficult.

A number of records were broken by the young athletes of Ruawai, some of these dating as far back as 1975.

Tree planting funds on offer u by Paul Campbell

The New Zealand Forest Service is now accepting applications with marae, schools, councils and community conservation groups all encouraged to apply for funding to take up planting projects, and at the same time, honour local heroes.

Since its launch in 2018, the service, Matariki Tu Rākau, has funded 660,000 native trees planted as living memorials at more than 300 events nationwide.

Senior adviser Belinda Miller says the programme ”is a great way to honour special people in their communities who have shown exemplary community service, or have brought distinction through their work while planting trees in their memory.

“It is also a great way to enhance the environment and native biodiversity by restoring and rebuilding our natural habitat and protecting our land, soils and waterways.”

Matariki Tu Rākau grants provide funding for native trees and traditional Māori medicine species, land preparation, a plaque and food for the planting event and can also contribute to tree maintenance.

“The team can help you plan where to plant your memorial, what trees to plant, how to prepare and maintain your planting and how to get the local community involved,” says Belinda.

Further motivation to apply for a grant this year is the first year of the national Matariki Holiday on Friday, June 24.

“The council I lead is future-focussed about community infrastructure and growing a better Kaipara. Regardless of what the Three Waters Reforms may or may not deliver, we’re setting things up now rather than sitting back.”

KDC has ruled out joining the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust scheme in favour of further investigating the Waiatua Dam option. Dr Smith says the decision to focus on the dam was a ‘no brainer’.

“Waiatua is an existing storage facility that we have already spent capital to build. This option will cost less than a quarter of the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust scheme.”

The dam would be heightened by 1.3 metres to increase available storage to 337,000m3 and water would supplement, not replace, the existing supply, drawn from the Kaihu River and Waiparataniwha Stream.

Water would flow naturally into the dam during the winter. It would hold enough water to meet all Baylys Beach and Dargaville’s current needs for a period of three months if no other water was available. There would also be an option to add a pump station later to top up water supplies if necessary.

“This would increase our water storage capacity for Dargaville, and we could support development,” Dr Smith said. “Silver Fern Farms, one of the Kaipara’s largest employers, would be

able to keep working through summer, and we could support new industries, and it will make us more resilient to climate change. Council really is getting on with the job of ‘growing a better Kaipara’.”

The government is expected to push its Three Waters reforms, which would put drinking, storm and wastewater management in the hands of four organisations, through parliament this year. Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta was set to receive advice from the project governance and accountability working group on Monday of this week on how to address local councils’ concerns. ¢

Like the Young Farmer competition for those in their young adulthood, the AgriKids contest is all about turning rural skills into games and challenges.

Youngsters compete in teams of three to tackle a series of modules based on the food and fibre sector, racing against each other and the clock.

This year, the Northland round will take place on April 2. Young competitors between the ages of 8 and 12 are already getting prepared at primary schools around the region.

“These competitions are a great way to get kids thinking about the different aspects of agriculture in a fun environment with the hopes of either sparking an interest or deepening a passion for a career in our industry,” says Beef and Lamb New Zealand’s national extension programme manager Olivia Weatherburn.

“The kids generally enjoy the practical aspects of farming, so this is an opportunity to also align them with the technical side such as doing some calculations, giving everyone in the team the opportunity to shine.”

Beef and Lamb is a major supporter of the contest, which is free to enter. Up to eight teams can enter from every school in Kaipara. Many will use the forthcoming event as a teachable moment, tying in with the school curriculum.

It’s not restricted to next-generation farmers from families who live off the land, either. In previous years, urban schools have also stepped up to the challenge, learning more about the engine room of the Kiwi economy in a way that’s fun and competitive. The challenge was well-patronised for 2021, despite

Covid-19 restrictions, with Ben Hartshorn, Dustin Young and Henry Chittock of Blue Mountain College in Otago taking out national honours.

“Even with masks this year, you could hear the giggles and enthusiasm of having fun while learning, and that’s what it’s all about,” said Olivia Weatherburn. She encourages students to form a team and rise to the challenge this April.

It comes after the European Union has approved the use of the methanereduction feeding tool. Federated Farmers raised the option in 2020 and still have no answer or action to their suggestion.

Since then, Chile and Brazil have approved the feed additive. Now the EU has followed suit, New Zealand farmers are concerned and want to remain as world leaders in reduced emissions.

“There is still no sign of the government stepping up and getting on with approving this technology for us to use as well, and therefore, help to keep our ‘world-leading’ title,” Federated Farmers president and climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard says.

The feed additive was developed from 10 years of scientific research by Dutch State Mines (DSM). The company claims that a quarter of a teaspoon would have the effect of decreasing methane emissions extensively.

“The EU continues to lead the way in ensuring food safety while adapting to new technologies that can make food production more sustainable,” European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides says.

change, and today’s approval is a very telling example of what we can achieve through new agricultural innovations.”

Federated Farmers want to see legislation in place in preparation for when DSM manufacture its product on a large scale.

“Whilst Bovaer® is still not quite there for being in a formulation that will provide the gains that will be seen in a barn feeding situation; we need the legislation ready so that the only thing we are waiting on is getting the product formulation right,” Mr Hoggard said.

“The rest of the world is embracing technology. We’re busy discussing targets and a tax system to reduce New Zealand’s ag emissions without the tools

to back them, likely forcing farmers to cut production and profitability.”

Climate change issues are affecting New Zealand farmers. Federated Farmers has called for movement and decisions surrounding the technology currently available to them.

“Federated Farmers asks the government to put some serious priority around agricultural emission reduction tools now. We need more ag-tech and less ag taxes,” Mr Hoggard said.

Should Bovaer® get the official goahead, there has been discussion that Fonterra, already a partner with DSM, could commercialise the feed additive locally and globally. ¢

Winifred Georgette Vuletich (Nee Peake) Passed peacefully at Dargaville Hospital with family present on the morning of the 18th February 2022 aged 90. A proud and much loved mother of Josie & Tim, Johnnie & Annette, Alan & Kim, Mark & Debbie, Kathy, Joe & Sallee, mother duck of the late Kaye. Loved and respected Nanna Wyn of 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. A service was held for mum on Wednesday the 23rd February.

We would like to thank all of those who attended mum’s celebration of her life and communicated their love and support through flowers and cards.
