Northland MP Winston Peters is to enhance his presence in the Kaipara with a new electoral office opening in Dargaville and he is placing the Kai Iwi Lakes plan as well as regional rail transport among a list of priorities for his attention.

Mr Peters gave a wide-ranging interview to the Lifestyler as he visited the Northland Field Days and confirmed he is opening an electorate office at 87 Victoria Street next to McKays, on March 23 at 5.30pm.

“It is important to be in the middle of town where the people can see you,” he said.

“I have had a submission given to me regarding the Kai Iwi lakes. It has

surprised me to see how underestimated its economical importance has been in this part of the world.

“I am surprised at how many people visiting the lakes come here and shop in Dargaville. Any serious change to that lake use will be a serious economic loss, at a time when they cannot afford any loss of opportunity at all.

“You have to turn around the loss of opportunities that have been going on

for far too long and start defending what we have got here and building on them.

When I went to school here it was a very prosperous place with full employment.”

Mr Peters touched on the oneway bridges at Matakohe, after the government promised action during the by-election he won. “They promised 10 two-lane bridges.” continued on page 3 …

Objection to lakes plan grows  by Ayla Miller

Opposition to the Draft Kai Iwi Lakes — Taharoa Domain-Reserve Management Plan has gained more support with Northland Fish and Game backing the campaign.

Northland Fish and Game manager Rudi Hoetjes says the proposition to stop releasing trout fingerlings and banning boats on the lakes will have a negative economic impact on the region.

The organisation holds the Kai Iwi Lakes Trout Fishing Competition every year and Mr Hoetjes says it can bring from 45 to as many as 120 people to the area over the weekend.

“If people can’t go fishing or bring their boats over then they won’t want to go there.

The Paparoa Village Café closed its doors last week but leaseholder Wayne Bennett says it will re-open again in the near future.

 A mystery solved — what exactly is going on behind the bright green frontage just outside of Maungaturoto? The answer involves two of our favourite things — hot coffee and an eclectic selection of all things pre-loved, retro, interesting and vintage. Maungaturoto Secondhand is up and running, enticing State Highway 12 travellers to stop and browse, while enjoying a piping hot cup of java. And their renovated ‘shed’ design is as Kiwi-retro-chic as they come!

“It is sad that it has closed — it is in a great location. We are in the process of freshening up the premises and then we will release it back on to the market. We have been approached for it to reopen.

“We want to give whoever takes it over a fresh start. The opportunities are endless for what could be created on the premises for a good café.

“Paparoa is a great little town and needs a good coffee shop. A town without a café is a dead town, so we want to get it up and running again as soon as possible.

“At the moment the community are having to go elsewhere for a coffee and a sandwich and we don’t think that is good enough. Lots of locals like to go out for a cuppa, lunch or a meal and we don’t want them to have to drive to other towns for an outing.”

Wayne said they are open to all ideas for the type of cafe it could become and there is a lot of potential for someone interested in starting a new business.

“It would be great for someone to take it over and create an inviting environment with nice meals so those

who live around here can enjoy a nice night out or gather together to socialise.

The opportunities are endless.

“The shops, markets and art gallery all bring people into the township. Being across from the river is nice too and a lot of people stop in on their way past.

Paparoa has a lot going for it.” 

Situated on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River in Dargaville, the Northern Wairoa Boating Club is celebrating 70 years of existence.

 “You’d think it was Christmas all over again — but here it is March and campers would normally be few and far between,” says Pahi Beach Holiday Park manager, Julie Dry. “The camp was virtually full at the weekend — the weather was brilliant and the fishing was great too. Terry and Thelma Curel have been involved since they were young. Terry used to boat on the river when he was a lad with his parents and is a foundation member of the club. He was 15 years old when he helped with the beginning stages of the club in 1946. Thelma joined five years later in 1951 and they married in 1955.

“The idea to build the club came to fruition when several small boaties got together because we had no landing, slipway or facilities but had a strong boating community here in Dargaville,” said Terry.

“The late Edgar Bradley called the first meeting at the old Buffalo hall which is now Laser Electrical. We received a lot of financial help and the facilities were built with volunteer labour. When we had a working bee everyone got involved.

“There were visits to other clubs including Port Albert, Helensville and Pahi to get ideas and we started fitting

out the slipways and moorings towards what we have today. Eventually we built the first clubhouse which housed a couple of skiffs.”

In later years the original clubhouse was expanded and this is what is on the site today. Regattas and events were started and are still a highlight of the year.

“I got involved on the committee and made myself useful where I could. I have been the secretary, treasurer and patron,” said Thelma.

“The Northern Wairoa Boating Club has prospered thanks to community and members’ support. We have personally taken a step back and are encouraging others to take the helm. It is holding nicely and today we have meals and functions on site and the events are going well. The club is for everyone to utilise and we welcome new members to come and join us. It is a great little club.” 

“Cooking the shellfish does not remove the toxin” said Dr Virginia McLaughlin, medical officer of health for Northland DHB. “Anyone who becomes ill after eating shellfish should see a doctor or phone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16. For emergencies, phone 111 for immediate medical help.”

Northland District Health Board, Public Health Unit advises the public not to collect or eat shellfish from the Northland west coast area between Mitimiti and Omapere on the Hokianga harbour to Pouto at the entrance to Kaipara harbour.

Shellfish collected within the area have shown the presence of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxins, above the regulatory level.

The symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning include numbness and tingling around the mouth, face or extremities; difficulty in swallowing or breathing; dizziness; double vision.

The trinity of good conditions for a healthy home are well known to most architects and builders. But some myths still exist about keeping warm, dry and comfy which need to be ‘busted’ before the message reaches everyone in New Zealand.

We all know by now that a home needs insulation, ventilation, and warmth to be healthy. But it’s a lesser known fact that one of our nation’s main health concerns — asthma and respiratory illness — often has its roots in poor home design. For example, it’s not enough to simply wipe away black mould from bathroom and kitchen ceilings. Creating an environment free of steam and vapour is a better long-term fix, achieved by installing extractor fans.

Similarly, it’s the moisture-loving dust mite which is responsible for a large amount of asthma and allergy cases.

Keeping the home dry with dehumidifying ventilation systems and electric units is one good step, but the correct carpet is another, depriving the little mites of a

home. Contrary to ‘general ignorance’, wool carpet outperforms nylon in repelling dust mites, a fact backed up by rigorous studies by the German Applied and Experimental Allergy Research Association. Wool’s coarse fibres are harder to inhale, making it a better choice for allergy sufferers — and this all makes sense when we consider that wool comes from a living animal, and has evolved to repel nasties like mites away from the sheep’s skin.

A dry home doesn’t just help keep down the mites which live in our fabrics and carpets. It’s also a home that’s easier to heat, because heat propagates more readily through dry air. That means less power spent on running a heat pump air conditioner, or less wood to

Dargaville Medical Centre relocated from the centre of town to the hospital site in 2000. This strengthened the integration between the two providers and having all services on one site has been a great benefit to the community.

“This is a fine example of the ‘onestop shop’ model of healthcare which has led to a number of new initiatives.

Iwi provider Te Ha Oranga and Hospice Kaipara’s offices and nursing staff are also based on the site,” said operations manager Jen Thomas.

“The patient rooms have windows and doors that open out onto terraces overlooking gardens. The atmosphere, along with community facilities and strong support for the hospital contribute

The hospital officially opened on February 25 1956 and has seen many changes since opening day including the addition of the maternity wing in 1971, following the closure of the maternity ward at Te Kopuru Hospital.

In 1994, surgical services were closed, resulting in community concern.

Then-mayor Peter Brown went to Parliament and obtained a suspensory loan to purchase a 46 per cent share in a number of the hospital’s key buildings to ensure it remained as a hospital, providing reassurance to the community.

A joint venture board was then formed, with the Kaipara Community Health Trust representing the community’s 46 per cent share and providing a community voice alongside Northland District

Many staff members today have family connections to those beginning days.

Robbie Sarich was 17 years old working for the Walton Brothers who managed the Turiwiri Quarry when work began on the building. They had a contract from the Ministry of Works to cart metal onto the new hospital site to set out the foundations and roading.

Sixty years on Robbie Sarich was the Kaumatua who gave the blessing at the birthday celebrations.

Robbie met his wife Heather in 1955.

She was working at the Te Kopuru Hospital as a maid. Heather was the Supervisor for Commercial cleaners in her last year at Te Kopuru Hospital before moving into the new Dargaville Hospital.

“I am proud to be looking after a community asset that my family helped to create,” said Maurice.

Tina Milich works in hospital administration department and her uncle moved to the area to help build it.

Keri McCabe was employed in 2014 as the occupational therapist and says around 1952–53 her grandfather George Ellingham at the age of 18, boarded at Miss Clarke’s boarding house and served his apprenticeship building the

hospital. “My grandfather came from Auckland and I came from Queenstown to live here. We can both say the experience of working in Dargaville is humbling, welcoming and provides a good challenge,” said Keri.

“We both came to an unfamiliar environment, but have many positive memories. We are proud to have experience’s tied to this place and what it provides for the community and are looking forward to many more birthdays to come.”

This Easter the chance of get up close and personal with some of the wildest machines and most daring drivers in this sport is coming to the Kaipara, as round one of the ORANZ Nationals raises the chequered flag in Mangawhai.

On March 26 a full 15 classes of off-road monster machines will line up for podium honours, taking to a track specially constructed on land kindly ‘loaned’ to the event by the good sports at Hilltop Harvesting. Over the coming weeks their Hilltop Road farm will be transformed into an adventure playground of dirt, as a fiendishly designed track is sculpted by skilled digger drivers to test the racers’ mettle.

“It’s a fantastic layout that will challenge

the racers and excite the crowd,” says ORANZ racer and local enthusiast Nick Leahy. “The cars and trucks will be jumping at up to 12ft in the air, all at 120km/h!

OFFROAD RACING New class adds local flavour Picture off-road racing in your mind, and the image which comes first is most probably of souped-up VW Beetles and naked-framed buggies thrashing through the Baja desert.

While this kind of racing, and these kind of machines are still a massive feature of any off-road race day, the kinds of roaring V8s pioneered by the likes of Mickey Thompson have a new ‘little cousin’ next to them on the starting grid. Disproving the adage that there’s no replacement for displacement, the pint-sized fury of UTV racing is really taking off, here and around the world.

New Zealand got a taste of just how nimble and quick the side-by-side four wheelers could be back in 2009, when team Polaris driver Ben Thomasen threw down the gauntlet in ORANZ round 2.

This was before there was a special class for UTVs, and the man from the north star badge was up against everything from custom sandrails to massive trophy truck-style eights. At the

end of the day, Ben’s RZR 900 beat all comers. This year at ORANZ Mangawhai there’s a whole class for UTVs, and the Polaris team will be back to contest the crown. Joining the racers on the grid is the Kaipara’s own Kyle Van Harlingen, Maungaturoto Polaris dealer and avid racer. This year too, sees the RZR series grow to 1,000cc, adding even more horsepower to an already potent offroad weapon.

Expect to see some spectacular racing in this class as it grows, incorporating such machines as the Can Am Maverick, Arctic Cat Wildcat, and Yamaha YXZ 1000R. We can certainly expect to see some wheel-to-wheel, mud-slinging action on March 26 as this newest addition to the off-road racing itinerary lights up the Hilltop Road track in Mangawhai. 

Enjoy final night for 60s band  by Ann Morgan

The Dargaville Club is hosting a final evening with the 60s Reunion Band on March 18.

“The club opened in 1932 and is at 53–55 Victoria Street, down near the rotunda, and is 160 members strong. Two of the guys in the band come from Dargaville and we are really excited to be hosting them for this last event,” said secretary Bobbi Young.

“There will be a smorgasbord dinner available and we will have a courtesy van for the evening so concert goers can relax and enjoy their night out. It will be like a school reunion and will be a very fun night.”

The band have said this is the final time they are playing at the club as they will be focussing on private functions in the future. Now based in Australia, Kevin Jobbitt is making his yearly trip back home for the occasion with fellow musicians Chris Davidson, Dave Ryan, Ned Pukeroa and Stu Stevenson.

“It is a 60s hits night. Stuart is a tenor saxophone player which is a rarity nowadays and this is included in the line-up — it is a really special instrument,” said band member Chris.

Sheryl touched and inspired the lives of her family and friends who will all miss her greatly, A celebration of her life will be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre, Mt Wesley, Dargaville, on Thursday 10 March 2016 at 1pm followed by a committal at Redhill Cemetery.

Remnant, Noel Liz, Paul, Jacqui and families would like to sincerely thank all relatives, friends and neighbours for their support, floral tributes, cards, messages and baking received after the recent sad loss of our dearly loved Husband, Dad and Poppa.

Our grateful thanks to everyone that attended the celebration of Noel’s life and sent donations to Northern Region Coastguard.

Sincere thanks to staff at Whangarei and Dargaville Hospitals for their care for Noel during his short illness. Our heartfelt appreciation to Reverend Brendon Wilkinson and Hart Funerals whose kind support and assistance enabled us to bid an appropriate farewell to Noel.
