 As Dargaville prepares to roll out the welcome mat for field days visitors, one group has been hard at work, making sure that civic feelings are well known. The giant wooden signs, which bracket the town have been carefully restored by the crew at the Dargaville Menz Shed. They have tidied up the giant macrocarpa slabs and given them a fresh coat of paint to make their ‘welcome to Dargaville’ message all the more vivid. Menz shed member Dave Webb says that this is the second time he’s played a hand in freshening up the signs, which have been a feature of the approaches to Dargaville for many years. The Kaipara District Council and Downers will finish the job by rehanging the heavy boards on their supports.

 When Vuletich Construction was called upon to lay and finish a large area of concrete totalling 79 truckloads in volume, they brought in the big guns, including four ‘floating’ ride-on power trowel machines and an advanced laser screed to ensure the best finish. The developer and building owner was very impressed by what he described as “the extraordinary effort and innovation of all involved.” The futuristic three-dimensional laser screed uses focussed beams of light to create an on-level finish on large flat areas of concrete. It’s all in aid of a new industrial development just outside Dargaville, which will boost the local economy upon completion.

Rates rise in NRC planning  by Paul Campbell

The Northland Regional Council is seeking public reaction to projects under its Draft Annual Plan 2020/21, while also announcing rates rise to cover planned spending on these projects through to June 30 next year.

“Not only was this a success for the dementia unit funds, but local businesses and the Kaipara got great exposure — a win-win for everyone. With builders due back in the next two weeks, framing will start going up as well as merging the new dementia unit wing into the existing rest home. The project should be ready to open in November this year,” Mr Fergus said.

“This week alone, I have been approached by three different groups offering to run fundraising events for the building project.

“There’s a family fun day planned on March 22 at the Maungaturoto Historic Inn. It will be based around live music and a barbecue, with the focus being placed on family fun.

“The Kaipara community is digging deep to help raise funds wherever possible.

“As a board, we are so thankful for the generous donations.

“At this point, it looks like we’ll need another $250,000 to fully complete this project that has a budgeted cost of $3.6 million.” 

The submissions are open until March 27, and ”an opportunity for our communities to review the next financial year’s budget and ensure we’re on track to deliver the third year of our 10-year plan, the Long Term Plan 2018–2028,” said council chair Penny Smart.

“We also need to check we’re able to keep up the momentum on the vital work that’s already underway.” Intended council spending includes: • Changes to information technology and data management ($592,000) • Investment in water quality and quantity science to provide highquality data to aid future decision making, including a freshwater quality accounting system, modelling highly-allocated aquifers, Aupouri groundwater analysis, a national wells database, lake level sensors and continuous water monitoring stations ($435,000) • Extra support for pest plant prevention ($110,000) • A climate change adaptation strategy ($105,000) to scope out the best way to approach this challenge • Expanding the council’s poplar nursery ($78,000)

The council had signalled an intended rate rise of four per cent in the 2020/21 year.

“We’re now proposing to increase this by another 4.6%, for a total increase of 8.6%. Over a year this extra 4.6% works out to an average of $13.60 per household, for a year-onyear average increase of just over $30 and will take the average estimated rates bill for the year to around $390.”

Councillor Blaikie says the council had taken increased rates income from regional growth into account when considering its proposed new spending, as well as investment income, which subsidised its activities.

An inspiring life — a lasting legacy  by Sir Lockwood Smith

A funeral for a friend brings back memories. Saying goodbye to Mike Moore did just that.

One was 1999 and the battle for Seattle. As New Zealand’s International Trade Minister, I was escorted through the tear gas, weaving our way around the barricades. It was a full ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and protesters had gathered in their thousands.

At the helm was new WTO DirectorGeneral, the Rt Hon Mike Moore. He had just achieved the most important international role of any New Zealander in my lifetime.

We were trying to launch a new trade round, and Mike had me chairing one of the four working groups. We failed. Not Mike’s fault, but the Battle for Seattle, as it became known, was quite an event — subsequently made into a movie that typically bore little relationship to what really went on.

The massive protests outside reflected one side of humanity — the events inside, another. In the final two days of negotiations, we worked nonstop for 48 hours in what’s known as the Green Room, trying to negotiate a positive outcome. I’ve never forgotten how unhelpful the EU was, or India for that matter, and how much I missed another constructive voice such as the UK could offer. Moreover, its voice,

of course, was buried under the EU. Union leader, Ken Douglas, part of our delegation, became so worried about my wellbeing, that every time I emerged from the Green Room to update our team on progress, he’d bring me a fresh coffee. His thoughtfulness to someone from the opposite side of politics will stay with me forever.

Their humanity sets good leaders apart. Ken Douglas had it, and Mike Moore had it in spades. His was a life devoted to finding the forgotten, to empowering the underprivileged — he did it not just in New Zealand but globally. The work of the WTO has raised more millions of people out of poverty than any other organisation in human history, and Mike Moore is part of that legacy.

A kid from a working-class background, he grew up in Northland. His first job was in the meat works at Moerewa, but a crucial time spent at Dilworth School in Auckland had engendered in him a love of books. His reading broadened his mind and underpinned his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to global leadership.

While a Labour man through and through, it was the National government under Jenny Shipley that nominated

Mike for the WTO role. As trade minister, I was pleased to support it but became more deeply involved when he needed to get the United States finally onside.

He’d run a typical Mike Moore campaign, living out of a shoebox in Geneva, the home of the WTO, doing the

real hard yards. He’d captured a good proportion of the member countries to his cause, but needed the US — still a smidgen prickly over what they saw as the nuclear ships debacle.

My working relationship with the Clinton administration by this time was

pretty good. They’d even given me the White House operator’s phone number.

An amazing system where, if they trusted you, you could get put through to key cabinet members wherever they were across the country.

Towards the end of Mike’s WTO campaign, the US Trade Ambassador called me to talk about it. I backed Mike strongly. Whether it helped, I don’t know, but Mike finally got US support and the job.

While we failed in Seattle, Mike succeeded in Doha with the new Development Round launched in 2001.

He also successfully brought China into the WTO. I’d been a bit involved as the first trade minister in the world to sign China up to the WTO. Interestingly, for two politicians from the opposite sides of the political spectrum, we’d become great friends.

When I was speaker, Mike, then Ambassador to the United States, got me up to Washington for a couple of days to work with him around the Congress on trade issues.

Mike was never boring. He had a unique way with thoughts and words, and while he made absolute sense to us Kiwis, you’d occasionally see a cloud of confusion cross the face of some Member of Congress. Translation was sometimes required.

Life was not a rehearsal for Mike.

He lived it to the full. My head was never so sore as following evenings spent with Mike and Yvonne in Geneva or Washington. Their hospitality was legendary and solving the world’s problems invariably required more than

one bottle of red. Much has recently been written about Mike’s contribution.

However, I think a bit has been missed, perhaps the most important of all — and it’s this.

During the past 30 years, New Zealand built a unique global trade strategy. It involved not just working with our nearest neighbours on bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), but doing things regionally as well, such as with South East Asia via ASEAN, and more recently, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) — all the while promoting progress at the WTO. New Zealand also learnt the hard way that at times you need to move unilaterally.

Removing barriers to trade within our own system, as protectionism had been shown by the early 1980s to be so damaging to our economy.

I don’t think that smart global trade strategy, so crucial in helping raise New Zealand from near bankruptcy in the early 80s to number one in the world on the Global Prosperity Index in 2016, would have lasted through successive changes of government. Had Mike Moore not laid the foundations for a bipartisan approach to trade liberalisation here in New Zealand when he was himself trade minister in the 1980s.

In my experience, few other countries in the world have seen the left and right of politics so consistently aligned in this critically important policy area. Traditionally, the political left has been less enamoured with trade liberalisation — fearing for local jobs.

Members of the Dargaville Racing Club were united in their opposition to contentious clauses in the Racing Industry bill currently before parliament when they addressed a select committee hearing on the proposed new laws last Wednesday.

Richard Alspach and Brian Campbell spoke via teleconference with a mixed panel of parliamentarians.

They outlined their vehement opposition to clauses within the bill, forwarded by Racing Minister Winston Peters of New Zealand First.

As temperatures rise and water levels drop, it’s not uncommon for algae and bacteria to bloom in sluggish slow-flowing streams or depleted pools. It can cause a variety of coloured ‘slimes’ to form, most of which are harmless to humans and animals.

One type, however, has been warned about by the Northland Regional Council.

Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria can form at this time of year in ponds, dams and creeks with lower flow and higher water temperature. Usually, these little creatures are benign, but when conditions are right, they multiply rapidly, creating a blue-green tint to water or a thick, slimy black coating on rocks and stones beneath the surface.

Floating cyanobacteria are called ‘planktonic’ while the rock-clinging slime is called ‘benthic’.

While messy, most cyanobacterial strains are harmless. However, some produce cyanotoxins harmful to

humans and animals, even through skin contact but especially if consumed. The benthic ‘black slime’ type is of serious concern to dog owners as dogs are very susceptible to its toxins. While some lakes and water bodies in the Far North are monitored regularly, the extreme temperatures and lack of rain may cause cyanobacterial blooms in other areas this summer.

If you see a greenish-blue tint to the water in a pond, dam or stream, or find black slime coating the bottom, report the outbreak on 0800 504 639, and stay clear until you know it’s safe. 

From field days to the rugby field The Northern Wairoa Rugby Union has chosen to kick off local centenary festivities, with a star-studded sporting event to entertain visitors to this week’s Northland Field Days on Friday.

The big event follows a coaching clinic and development day this Tuesday, headed up by Taniwha coaches George Konia and Graham Dewes and supported

by Tui Raeli, Bryce Williams, Peter Hugo and the current Northern Wairoa Club senior coaches. Two specially selected teams will take to the field on Field Days Friday. These centenary sides will contain players with their roots here in Northland as well as current big names in local rugby.

“This significant match is going to draw a large crowd at Pioneer Rugby Park,” says Chris Fife, chair and president of the Northern Wairoa Rugby Union. “As well as after-match celebrations at the Dargaville Sports Club. The event also celebrates the players who have played for North Auckland and Northland, also from the Northern Wairoa. It’s all thanks to our supporters, our sponsors and our players for making it possible.”

Some of those supporters are locals like Silver Fern Farms, who will help fire up the barbecue on game night. Others are celebrity names, coming to support the 100-year cause. Black Cap Dion Nash will be compere on the night, bringing along with him his wife Silver Fern Bernice Nash (Mene).

Keynote speakers after the match include Phil Halse, patron of the Northland Rugby Union and chair of the 2020 centenary committee, and All Blacks legend Sir Michael Jones, scorer of the first try in the first-ever Rugby World Cup in 1987. The after-game action will culminate with the auction of 23 very limited edition NWRU centenary jerseys.

The bar and barbecue open at 5pm this Friday, March 6, with a visit from Tane the Taniwha at 6pm and kick-off just after.

What’s at stake here?  by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

The racing bill, promoted by racing minister Winston Peters, has rightly raised the ire of local racing officials.

If enacted the bill will give the racing board the right, with the agreement of the local racing club, to confiscate, close down and sell Dargaville’s racecourse. The money they get from the sale of the course and associated assets goes into a general slush fund to support what the racing board considers more mainstream (and profitable) racecourses.

If the local club does not agree, and Dargaville does not, then the racing board can apply to the government for an Order in Council to take the course anyway. Who makes that decision?

The Minister of Racing.

I am not a betting man, but if I were, I would lay an odds-on bet that under this government the Order in Council would not go in favour of the local club. To say nothing of the small matter of vesting so much power with one minister (Winston Peters) by a government that has a tarnished history of changing laws to do just that. The Dargaville Racecourse has been in local ownership for more than 100 years. ‘Unofficial’ events were held there 140 years ago.

It is successful. Each year thousands flock to the club’s fun picnic event. Even Winston Peters admits that more people went to the races at Dargaville than went to Avondale.

Yet it seems that it will be for naught if his bill goes through.

Dargaville is one of 20 racecourses a government-commissioned report recommends be closed.

There are some good things in the racing bill, don’t get me wrong, and maybe there are some courses in New Zealand that no longer function and need to be closed. Dargaville is not one of them. It is a community asset. It is functioning perfectly well and deserves to stay.

There is another matter of principle at stake here, more troubling still.

Since when has it been the right of any central body in our country to step in and unilaterally strip a local community of one of its assets? The stakes of allowing that to happen, now and in the future, in Dargaville and elsewhere, are manifestly alarming.

We need to take a stand.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, I would hope that by now everybody is aware of the implications of the Racing Industry Amendment bill, introduced into parliament in December 2019.

There is no doubt the racing industry is in need of reform. What needs to be strongly resisted is that the reform should include the right of the industry to pillage the assets of the local community for its own benefit.

The effect of this concept for Dargaville would be to see the local racecourse sold and the proceeds subsumed into the racing industry.

Should the bill become law this can happen, regardless of the work of the local community, who built up the assets, and regardless of the fact that the Dargaville Racing Club

Four $3,000 scholarships offered by the Northland Regional Council have attracted more than 70 applications with the candidates awaiting a decision this month.

Council deputy chair Justin Blaikie says the council is offering the four scholarships to support students studying or training in areas that align with council’s focus and mission of ‘working together to create a healthy environment, strong economy and resilient communities’.

“These scholarships also aim to build Maori capacity within Te Taitokerau and provide oppor tunities for further education, with two earmarked for Maori who share a genealogical connection to Te Taitokerau.”

Justices of the Peace are now installed as a regular part of Dargaville’s main-street Whanau Focus Centre, bolstering the already considerable number of services offered from the one community hub.

Practising JP Sid Teesdale is one of the rotating staff of justices who will be on-site on a regular basis to help citizens notarise documents and confirm their identities for official purposes, such as passport applications.

“It’s convenient for people to know where we are and how to find us,” says Sid. “The reasoning was that there was a private space available here, and it’s among other civic and social services in the main street.”

The office of Justice of the Peace is an ancient one. In New Zealand, it dates back to Governor Hobson’s first landing when he was empowered by the British Crown to give ‘settlers in good standing’ the power to assist in matters of the law.

One of those other services, the monthly Taitokerau Community Law Centre free outreach clinic, is

expanding its portfolio and inviting locals to come and seek free legal advice on matters as varied as employment, accommodation, consumer rights and last wills and testaments.

Awakino East Road showground has been the scene of intense activity in the past few weeks as an army of volunteers have undertaken myriad tasks to set the scene for the 35th Northland Field Days with the gates opening this week for March 5, 6 and 7.

Thousands of people are expected during the three days, and they will be welcomed with an extensive programme of events and activities that range from tractor pull contests to Clydesdale wagon rides and everything in between, including plenty of family fun, food music and overall entertainment.

“We have Bruce the Builder, who is a performance builder. He will be roving around the field days entertaining the public and will also have specific show’s scheduled through the event,” said spokesperson, Julie Fox. “Cutting horses, kids entertainment, laser tag shooting, sheep races and a petting zoo will be here again this year.

Services including the police and fire brigade and St John will each have a site as well.”

Each year sees the Northland Field Days show get bigger and better, while still retaining the atmosphere of a regular country fairground.

“As one of the largest regional field days the event is known New Zealandwide for contests, machinery exhibits, food, fun and great hospitality,” said Northland Field Days vice-president, Basil Cole.

An incorporated society, registered with the NZ Charities Commission the Northland Field Days as an

entity, provides community grants for scholarships and research across a variety of sectors.

Many of the original Northland events still take centre stage with good, old Kiwi attractions such as cutting horses, tractor-pull competitions, sheep shearing shows and all things country.

There is a distinct family focus with the

cost of tickets at $12 an adult, $5 a child (5–16 years) or $30 a family (two adults plus up to three children 5–16 years old) Under 5s are free.

As in the past, there will be fairground rides and food stalls, entertainment and music with the event open from 9am to 4pm every day. An impressive selection of new tractors, machinery,

and technology, including new vehicle releases, will be on show.

The event kicked off back in 1985 at Dargaville Racecourse, near the current base at the corner of State Highway 14 and Awakino Point East Rd, and was then run by Dargaville Jaycees.

The inaugural event attracted just 80 exhibitors. 

Average prices for residential low user connections (usually best for consumers who use < 8,000kWh p.a.) will remain flat for the 4th year in a row.

Average total lines charges for residential standard connections will decrease by 9% if retailers move the connection to our new DM7 plan. This has a higher daily charge and lower variable charge, which may help to reduce the cost of electricity for large, high use households.

Business connections will have an increase to the daily fixed price, and a reduction to the variable (per kWh) price. This reflects the fixed cost nature of running the network and also helps to reduce total energy costs for businesses that are needing to use more electricity. On average, the increase in lines charges for most business connections is around 1%.

We will pay a distribution charge discount for the benefit of electricity consumers connected to our network, of $192 + GST (for most consumers) in November or December this year. See our pricing disclosure for more details.

We’ve introduced Time of Use pricing for residential and business consumers with communicating smart meters, from 1 April 2020. Time of Use pricing has different charges depending on the time of day that electricity is used.

This is because electricity networks are a bit like roads, in that they can get congested at times of the day when everyone wants to use them. When networks get congested, we then have to invest to accommodate this increase in peak demand.

We’re getting these pricing structures set up for the future, when there is likely to be more demand on our network at peak times. For example, when electric vehicles become more common and drivers all want to charge their cars when they get home from work.

At the moment the Time of Use prices largely reflect existing pricing, but in the future these prices will signal that it costs more to consume electricity at peak times (mornings and evenings) and that if you can shift consumption to off-peak times (like charging your EV overnight) we can reduce the cost of upgrades and share the benefit with you through lower prices. Retailers can choose if and how they pass these charges on to you.

Distribution Charge Discount 1. In the year commencing 1 April 2020, Northpower Limited will provide a discount for the benefit of Northpower consumers totalling an estimated $10.3m. This will be a discount on Northpower’s distribution charges and the amount which each consumer receives for each eligible ICP will be determined by the consumption notified to Northpower by the electricity retailers for the 12-month period to 30 September 2020 in two bands as follows: • Eligible ICPs with consumption exceeding 2,000 kWh will receive a single discount of $192.

Northpower teamed up with Dargaville Intermediate School last week to host an interschool competition promoting science and engineering for young people.

From the vice president From all our hard-working members of the Northland field Days committee, may I offer you a ‘very hot and dry’ welcome to our 35th event and with 80 new exhibitors this year there will be products not seen before in our extensive showgrounds.

A dedicated group of volunteers have put together a special event to enable commercial interests and farmers to meet up in a friendly and relaxed environment, and the communities of town and country to get together in a holiday atmosphere. Our list of exhibitors attend this event at some expense, so it is important that the community offers its hospitality and support in true Kaipara and Northland fashion.

While I extend a very warm welcome to these field days, I do so with thoughts of the late Lew Duggan, our longserving president who passed away just recently. He will be fondly remembered by returning exhibitors and visitors for his untiring efforts to see everyone was taken care of, and each year a highly successful event was held. As vice president, it has been my place to make sure this legacy is continued.

Although the long-term weather forecast indicates, we may expect some showers during the weekend the field days will still operate under strict water conservation conditions. However, the committee has made arrangements to bring in water for dust control and to provide for exhibitors’ display needs.

The market area, the three lifestyle pavilions and the two rural pavilions are all full, with outside sites displaying many products new to this event and many suitable for the whole family to

Members of the Lions Club of Ruawai are on their annual hunt for hidden treasure, that is to say, saleable items in good condition to stock up their annual charity auction, set down for Saturday, March 14 at the Kaipara Kumara forecourt.

“From lawnmowers to bicycles, teddy bears to books, and everything in between, you name it, and we are interested,” said organiser, Dorothy Simpson.

“Money we raise is used to benefit the community. In the past, we have given to the rescue helicopter, sent money to the Australian bushfire appeal, and sponsored a local student’s athletic achievements to name just a few.”

“If there is something anyone has to offer for sale, we’d love to hear about it. Maybe something overlooked in a barn somewhere, furniture, bric-

a-brac, household goods, electrical appliances, toys?

“We can collect donations if needed.

The only things we draw the line at are cars, tractors and animals!”

There will be a trading table open on the day at 9am, with a viewing of the goods available at 9.30am and the auction gets underway at 10am with cash only.

Boost your immune system With autumn on the way, and illnesses indiscriminate about the actual temperature outdoors (you don’t need to be cold to get a cold), it’s time to consider the best line of defence your body has against disease. Your immune system is one of the most powerful anti-sickness security forces in the natural world, and giving it the fuel it needs is simple.

1. Ginseng and Echinacea are superherbs for battling respiratory illness such as colds and flu. They’re available as capsules, or combined in other natural remedies; the fresher, the better.

2. Hot chilli really does help ‘burn’ away a cold. There’s no need to go overboard and scorch your taste buds, but a little bit of cayenne pepper or hot chilli can really stimulate the immune system.

3. Ditch smoking and vaping. Anything that taxes the lungs when you have a respiratory illness is bad. It even comes down to your surroundings; get some fresh air and avoid humid and stale conditions indoors if possible.

4. Vitamin D, vital to the immune system, is produced naturally by your body in sunlight. That may be one of the reasons that colds and flu strike in the darker days of winter. Get 10 to 15 minutes of sun each day, and you’ll boost your levels of Vitamin D to good effect.

5. Cut back on strong drinks — both alcohol and coffee, along with energy drinks. They take a lot of processing by the body, which is energy that could be going toward your immune defences.

6. Fresh crushed garlic really does the job. Heat can denature the good effects of this ‘magic’ bulb, so add it to foods just before serving as a garnish for maximum effect.

7. Eat to fuel your immune ‘forces’.

Foods like spinach, shiitake mushrooms, walnuts, almonds, stone fruits, grains and seeds help with the production of the cells that fight infection. Team them up with garlic, as above, and turmeric, hot chilli or cardamom for a tasty immune boost.

An Open Letter to The Right Honourable Winston Peters Mr Peters, what are you doing?

On December 5th, 2019, you introduced the Racing Industry Bill to Parliament. It contains a number of truly disturbing clauses, which would give the racing industry unprecedented powers to seize the assets of local racing clubs.

The Bill contains these words:“The racing code may determine that a racing club is no longer racing …”

“A racing club no longer racing may be dissolved …”

“This section applies if a racing club is dissolved by any means … The assets of the racing club remaining (after all creditors’ claims on the club have been satisfied) vest in the racing code with which the club was registered.”

The Governor-General may, by Order in Council made on the recommendation of the Minister, (a) approve a proposal prepared by the racing code relating to the transfer of the surplus venue to the code (a transfer proposal), with or without modification; and (b) state the date on which the transfer takes effect.”

“The Registrar-General must, on written application by a person authorised by the Minister, (a) register the racing code as the owner of the fee simple estate in the surplus venue in substitution of the racing club; and (b) record any entry on the record of title, and do anything else that may be necessary to give effect to this subpart.”

“The transfer proposal may provide that the racing club is to transfer the surplus venue to the racing code without receiving in return any, or an equivalent, asset.”

And this:- “The transfer of the surplus venue must not be regarded as placing the racing club or the racing code, or any of its officers, employees, or agents, in breach of any Act, rule of law, or agreement that would otherwise apply.”

So far 20 racing clubs have been identified as no longer adding value to the industry if they continue to race on their home tracks, and if the new Racing Bill is adopted as presented to Parliament in December, they could have all of their assets and land seized with no payment whether they agree or not.

This follows the Messara Report — which advised the shutting down of twenty regional racecourses around New Zealand, including Dargaville, Avondale, Thames, Rotorua, Wairoa, Stratford, Hawera, Waipukurau, Woodville, Reefton, Greymouth, Hokitika, Motukarara, Timaru, Kurow, Oamaru, Waimate, Omakau, Winton, and Gore.

Of these, Thames, Wairoa, Stratford, Marlborough, Dargaville, Winton, Westland, Waimate, Winton and Avondale have been identified as first of the clubs that will potentially be stripped of their assets if this bill is passed in its current form.

We understand that the Racing Industry has problems. We understand you and your advisors are trying to find a solution. But surely, seizing the assets of local, community based racing clubs is not the way.

Certain clauses in the Racing Industry Bill before parliament would seem to open the door for just that — the overriding of individual club’s constitutions, the seizing of ownership from local hands, and the appropriation of community assets that have been renamed ‘industry assets’. These are, in many cases, assets built up over more than a century by local clubs and local people on land donated by local people. Many pre-date the ‘industry body’ which now plans to seize them.

It is just wrong.

Legal property ownership is a cornerstone of our society. We will not have what we’ve worked to build taken away with no legal recourse.

Every year on Anzac Day we commemorate the fallen, who gave their lives to ensure that we live in a free democratic country where no club, and no person, in any industry, in any town or city, should live in fear of the seizure of their assets by the state. One stroke of the legislative pen stripping them of ownership and the rights thereof … it’s not the Kiwi way.

Maybe in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe. Maybe in Pol Pot’s Cambodia. But not in New Zealand, under a democratically elected government.

Mr Peters, it falls to you as Minister of Racing to ensure that this bill is amended and remove any chance that this country should be besmirched with the kind of dictatorial avarice which is the hallmark of failed states.

The racing industry might need a hand.

But first, it needs to know; HANDS OFF our local racing clubs and their assets.

It’s legalised theft, it’s wrong, and it must stop here.

This week’s Northland Field days is a chance to celebrate local farming, and of course, the end product of all that labour and ingenuity. We’re talking, of course, about good food. There will be options aplenty for those visiting the Kaipara to enjoy a bit of old-fashioned hospitality along with some of our finest fare.

For those travelling through the district to reach Dargaville, a stop at the Maungaturoto Historic Inn is a must. Not just for the food, though ‘hearty’ only just begins to cover the classic dishes that grace the menu here. The fact is, this building is steeped in history, and is a welcome relief from the long dry highway as well as being a local icon.

Once in Dargaville, patrons will find a brand new name in the main street.

Te Kauta, diagonally across from the Northern Wairoa Hotel in the main street, is a cafe with a difference. Not only is the name (meaning ‘the kitchen’) proudly in Te Reo, the menu is full of delicious fusion-style treats which bespeak a Northland heritage. Try a traditional boil-up in a pie here, and you will be addicted!

By night, the heat of the day is cooled down by the Northern Wairoa riverside, and the lights of Dargaville on the water make a great view from the town’s boating club. The ticket there is deservedly famous for their meals, the standouts being great steaks and roasts served in unique surroundings.

On Thursday and Friday nights you’ll find many locals riverside enjoying a succulent dinner; it might be a fine decision to join them. Friday, of course, is party time in Dargaville thanks to

Aotearoa cycle tour ambassador Residents of the west Kaipara will have seen larger than usual numbers of cyclists touring throughout part of the country in February, as the biennial Tour of Aotearoa gets underway.

Pouto local Merilee Pairama-Hart has been helping the intrepid riders on their way as they journey down the peninsula, headed for the next stage of their adventure.

“I have been involved with providing dinner for those who stayed overnight at the Waikaretu Pouto Marae,” says Merilee.

“I also took the opportunity to meet many of these inspiring cyclists from all around our beautiful Aotearoa; north and south.

“Many have come from Australia, and I have also met a gentleman from South Africa. The most inspiring folk I got to speak with hailed from Invercargill.

“They are all very healthy energised keen cyclists who are absolutely thrilled to do this great run from the Cape to Bluff, across Aotearoa.” At

the terminus of the Pouto Peninsula riders took to the water aboard Kaipara Cruises’ Kewpie Too, for the nautical trip across the harbour.

The nimble little craft emulates the ‘dock anywhere’ competency of those ships from days of old, which helped settler, goods and mail get around the harbour in colonial times.

Merilee says that the cycling adventurers have been upbeat despite the heat.

“Many shared the thrill of the open road, saying ‘it’s like being on holiday, we get to see many beautiful places’.

“No doubt Pouto would be one of their top picks at the gateway of the Mighty Kaipara!”

Groups of riders will continue to be released in blocks of 100 at a time from Cape Reinga through until all competitors are out on the course.

The group of local residents who administer the Tangiteroria Sports Complex, sadly destroyed by fire earlier this year, have announced plans for a fundraiser to help the rebuild.

They have turned to the very successful formula of the Tangiteroria region’s annual motorcycle trail ride, a muchanticipated event toward the end of autumn in most years, which allows riders to experience not-usually-seen vistas of the Tangihua ranges from in the saddle of bikes and quads.

Kaipara Kai - Growing Kaipara’s Value Anyone driving through Ruawai lately may have noticed a new arrival. A Kaipara central location has been selected as the new Kaipara Kai base.

Kaipara Kai is a groundbreaking project that aims to support Kaipara farmers who are seeking opportunities to draw greater value from their land use – and could see the district adapt by diversifying into unique crops like pineapples, berries and bananas on a commercial scale.

Part of Kaipara Kickstart, Kaipara kai is funded by the Provincial Growth Fund to spur economic growth in land productivity and development. It is identifying opportunities for farmers to draw greater value from their land use.

Agrifood researchers, Coriolis Research, have identified that Kaipara is underperforming against neighbouring districts in creating agricultural dollars and jobs from the land. The Kaipara Kai project will create a path to adding up to +230m to regional GDP; this equates to $9,776 per person in the district.

Technology will play an important part in increasing efficiency and production by, for example, enabling farmers to balance their nutrient and water regime directly.

“Later this year Kaipara Kai will be working with farmers to establish small water/horticulture/technology demonstration sites funded by the Provincial Growth Fund. Kaipara landowners will have access to these examples to learn what is possible.”

Markets Coriolis Research has assessed market potential for the food produced out of Kaipara considering local, domestic and export markets. They’re also exploring the opportunities for growing food that is currently imported.

Employment Workforce planning has been recognised as a potential barrier to the success of growers, and work on addressing this challenge is ongoing. Growing a variety of crops will leave Kaipara less exposed to market fluctuations or crop failure. It also provides options for retaining a workforce that moves from crop to crop, providing consistent employment in Kaipara’s horticulture industry.

Diane Miller, Project Manager for the Kaipara Kai, says researchers have identified 27 potential high value products for Kaipara, including animals, crops and aquaculture. NIWA, Plant & Food Research and Manaaki whenua are completing a detailed analysis to determine which of these are best suited to specific locations throughout Kaipara.

“What can grow is only part of the equation,” says Diane. “We’ve also been looking at where the best market opportunities lie and what infrastructure might be needed to support production.”

Kaipara District Council has teamed up with Northland Inc to establish a Kaipara kai base in Ruawai. This will be a meeting place where people can share their experience or learn more about options available to them. The base will be open following Northland Field Days at 1 Jellicoe Street, Ruawai. Any person who is entitled to and wishes to object to the issue of the licence may, not later than 15 working days after the date of the publication of this notice, file a notice in writing of the objection with the Secretary of the District Licensing Committee at Kaipara District Council, Private Bag 1001, Dargaville 0340.

No objection to the issue of a licence may be made in relation to a matter other than a matter specified in Section 105(1) of the sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.
