KDC spokesperson Ben Hope says that while discussion has been robust

and citizens have been talking about their perceived pros and cons regarding the seven-point plan, the key point is to make a formal submission and be heard.

“We want to hear about people’s objections, and also their support of

different parts of the Long Term Plan,” he says.

p Dargaville’s truck show proved a big success as big rigs, classic and vintage vehicles rolled into the town’s field days site in support of the combined rescue and emergency services of the region. Children and parents alike appreciated the acreage of steel and chrome and took the opportunity to enjoy an alfresco brunch among the automotive giants. As the Kaipara District council’s Long Term Plan (LTP) nears the end of the public submissions phase, the last aspect of the proposed 10-year framework in under the spotlight; water supply to Dargaville.

The LTP suggests connection to the forthcoming Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust dam in rural Te Kopuru, with a cost of approximately $2.1 million.

Water for these two schemes currently comes from the Kaihu River.

However, water officials have noted that during drought conditions, such as those experienced in the summer of 2019/2020, river flow rates can become so low that it’s impossible to draw drinking water from this source.

The LTP proposal calls for a connection to the new dam, which has moved from a simple proposal to a forthcoming reality in recent months.

The TTT Water Trust’s March newsletter

confirms that a submission has been put to the council for the construction of a large reservoir dam in the Glinks Gully area, with work projected to begin before winter.

The LTP ties in this new water resource with the concepts of both climate change readiness, the planning of which has been allocated a further $1.5 million over ten years, and of homogenisation of reticulated water charges.

As well as serving the residential infrastructure of Dargaville, the new water source would also provide a ‘backstop’ for industry, as many of our local businesses also rely on a reliable water supply to operate. ¢

After more than two years of protest, a decision on the proposed siting of a mega-landfill for Auckland’s rubbish in the Dome Valley, threatening perceived Kaipara Harbour pollution, is expected in 30 days, on May 12.

The five commissioners appointed to inquire into the dump application by Chinese-owned Waste Management Ltd formally closed their hearing last Friday. The time frame for issuing the decision on the resource consent application has been extended from the normal 15 to 30 working days.

The date was advised by Auckland Council resource consents lead, Warwick Pascoe. The news has delighted the Fight the Tip movement, which has led more than two years of widespread opposition to the planned landfill.

“We are waiting with huge interest for the outcome of this issue; now all the hearings are officially over. The closure came at the end of a lot of follow up work by the commissioners,” said Fight the Tip executive member Sue Crockett. “Now, we wait.”

iwi and community groups. The 60-hectare landfill would be run by Waste Management, which required Overseas Investment Office approval to buy the site in the Wayby Valley to take up to half of Auckland’s rubbish from 2026.

Opponents told the hearings of their huge concerns that landfill breaches or leaks could devastate Kaipara Harbour from its catchment area of the Hoteo River, which feeds into the harbour.

Fight the Tip was backed in its opposition by waste experts, environmental scientists, geologists and ecologists, as well as the Department of Conservation, Forest and Bird, and Auckland Council itself, along with others. Fight the Tip’s Michelle Carmichael has said: “There’s too much opposition against it across the board, from iwi to government level to community level.

If it gets approved, there is something seriously wrong with the system.”

Moving a residential location from one part of the country to another will always provide a little sense of adventure, but in the case of a move from Hawke’s Bay to the Kaipara, a sense of discovery and coincidence became an overriding factor.

After meeting new people and settling into the village of Paparoa, I had pretty much decided that I had put some 40 years of world travel and living in a dozen countries behind me.

Accordingly, I thought to sort through some boxed up and stored family

papers and documents and send what was important to the safekeeping of my son — history for the next generation.

That’s when I discovered, probably for the first and only time, my late mother’s birth certificate and leaping off the page was the word Paparoa. There under

in some mysterious form, completed a family circle. Further research followed in the excellent archives of The Kauri Museum, and many more glimpses of family history appeared.

Now when I see old sepia photographs of the Pahi Regatta, I often imagine that child in a pram in the shade of the huge (even then) Moreton Bay Fig tree is mum, and the shadowy figures beside it, grandpa and grandma Robertshaw.

However, to set the seal on this encounter with the past is a strong friendship with the current owners of that villa in Paparoa’s Schoolhouse Lane — once an arterial road, long since passed by SH12. ¢

Remembrance takes flight

Weekend showers of rain did not deter the convoy of motorcycles and classic cars that rolled into Dargaville on Sunday as part of the Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal.

From Friday, March 26 onward, a special relay of pilots has been making its way around New Zealand, carrying with them a message of remembrance. Dargaville knitters and the aero club have been preparing for their arrival.

Whangarei’s contingent of hot rodders and classics enthusiasts were met by locals with similar rare examples of auto art in their sheds and garages. Members of the Dargaville Lions shook buckets for donations among the spectators who turned out to appreciate the horsepower on display. One enterprising driver even organised a sale of stuffed-toy mascots for the convoy, gathering more coins for the chopper.

After a brief rest at the Countdown and Warehouse car park, the crew headed back onto the highway, this time only as far as Harding Park, where they were hosted by the Dargaville Vintage

Machinery Club for lunch and a tour of the premises and collection. Prizes were handed out for those participating in the run, which had been planned earlier in the month but was forced to postpone due to the Covid-19 lockdown experienced in early March.

All proceeds from this event will go to the rescue helicopter trust, enabling medical rescue flights to continue saving lives all across the North. Other recent events, including the arrival of more than 100 horses and riders for the Trek for Life and the Dargaville Truck Show, have also raised money for the service, which relies on public goodwill and charity to keep flying. ¢

p On April 20, a Cessna 152 aircraft will fly in from Auckland carrying the poppy flight cargo of remembrance, raising money and awareness for the RSA, Starship Hospital and the Warbirds Trust

The 2021 Poppy Flight is an Anzac odyssey, connecting all the small towns of New Zealand through flight.

“It will encourage our children to remember those who fought for our freedom, many of whom paid the ultimate price, and encourage them to think about returned servicemen and women who need our help and support now,” said Kev and Mel Salisbury, operators of Aviation Tours NZ and organisers of the flight.

“Our collective fundraising will help The RSA and The Starship Foundation as they continue to provide care needed

in many areas. The Poppy Flight will also help keep our aviation history alive through the NZ Warbirds Association.”

Dargaville is scheduled for a visit from the poppy flight on April 20, when the plane carrying the poppies will touch down at the town’s aerodrome.

Marion McEwing of the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre reports that members of the Dargaville knitting club have been busy preparing poppies to add to the aircraft’s cargo. Readers who wish to donate to the cause can visit poppyflight.co.nz/donate to make a contribution. ¢

Kaipara Kōrero Pouto Road sealing works kick off It’s a go! The first part of the Provincial Development Unit funded – Pouto Road project kicked off last week, starting one of our most significant road sealing projects. The work will take place over two seasons (April-June 2021 and September-December 2021). Contractors Ventia will start near the Ari Ari Road junction and work northwards, completing approximately ten kilometres of sealing work.

A traffic management plan will be in place during the construction, road users should expect some delays to their travel.

The fund subsidises travel to and from sporting events for sports teams participating in local competitions. Applications close 31 March 2021 (the second round will reopen in August).

Parks and maintenance work by Kaiwaka River Our Parks team and local contractors Turf Tamer have undertaken work by the Kaiwaka River (north eastern side of the bridge). This work is funded by Te Tai Tokerau Worker Redeployment package from central government.

Our team tidied up the area – removing fallen and dying trees, mulching overgrown vegetation and grass, and treating and removing pest plants, retaining the native trees and shrubs.

Once the Kaiwaka footbridges have been completed we will be working with the community to beautify this area so that it can be a space enjoyed by everyone. We can’t wait to see it completed.

Mangawhai shared path update Recently we received the good news that Waka Kotahi NZTA have granted $5.9 million in funding to complete phase 1 of our new shared path. This funding will cover intersection improvements in the Village and the section of the shared path on Molesworth Drive from the ITM down to about 80m past Estuary Drive. Construction will start later this year – we will be sharing more information about this work soon.

Parking at Dargaville Primary School We’re having some issues at the moment around bad parking behaviour at Dargaville Primary School, with reports people are regularly parking on grass berms and over yellow lines, making the area unsafe and obstructing traffic lines of sight. There are rules in place to regulate parking, and our team at Kaipara District Council are regularly out and about monitoring parking and behavior. From March 20 to 28, a horse trek with a difference proceeded down the west coast from Rawene on the Hokianga Harbour toward Pouto at the tip of the Kaipara Heads.

The Trek For Life was established to support the rescue services that operate in the Kiwi outdoors, a gigantic adventure playground for many, and a vast area to cover when disaster strikes.

“Despite its size, some areas of New Zealand can be very remote, and with our innate Kiwi sense of adventure, the chances of finding yourself in the wilderness needing assistance are great,” says the Trek For Life Trust’s media spokesperson.

“So we thought what better way to give back to local communities than to support the First Response and Rescue Services in the areas that we travel through by donating a portion of the proceeds.”

In March 2020, the inaugural Trek travelled from Te Paki Station at the very

top of the North island to Kohukohu, raising $33,000 for 10 different first response and rescue services in the Far North. The trekkers have come to the Kaipara, setting up a base camp for a mid-trek rest on the cliff tops above Baylys Beach.

Trekkers are supported in their journey by locals who provide space for their nightly camp set up.

A small legion of volunteers establish marquees, tents and temporary secure space for the horses, as well as ensuring that there’s plenty to eat and a comfy place to sleep.

While many are on horseback, others take to the trail on foot or by bicycle. It’s all for a good cause and a great way to drink in the scenery of the Ripiro Coast. ¢

The seven core initiatives which are discussed, costed and proposed in the LTP include waste minimisation and recycling, the remediation or reconstruction of certain civic buildings in Dargaville and the relocation of Mangawhai’s library. There’s also a large focus on water, addressing wastewater and drinking water infrastructure costs and how they are paid, securing new water supplies to quell restrictions in summer, and a response to climate change.

The plan also contains information on rates changes and how they have been affected by property value increases across the region.

Comment is also welcomed on this financial aspect of how the LTP’s core platforms will be funded.

When Jody and Rosie Wilson decided to come back to the Kaipara, they brought a selection of skills built up in the fitness industry, working for one of the busiest gyms in Christchurch.

Now they are ready to embark on their own business in Dargaville. The couple returned to the locale after working in Les Mills Christchurch and then establishing their own home fitness studio business. It was at the time when earthquakes had rocked the southern city. Still, it was the birth of their first child, which formed the catalyst for Jody and Rosie to head north, where Jody’s family lived, and support was at hand.

“Our vision is to bring that more cosmopolitan and varied approach to fitness to Dargaville,” said Jody. He was in the freshly painted premises, which will soon bear the signage of Ignite Fitness.

“We’ve been very busy setting up, but once all the paperwork is done we’re ready for the next phase, bringing in equipment and inviting enrolments.”

The gym will feature areas for core training, strength training, kettlebells and dumbbells, and a boxing and kickboxing fitness area. This is not a sparring or contact sports section, Jody points out, but a place to engage with the fitness aspects of combative sports, such as speed bag and heavy bag work, among others.

Mussel safety warning Warmer than usual coastal waters have caused a new alert from New Zealand Food Safety advising people to stay safe from food poisoning by thoroughly cooking mussels before eating them.

Director of food regulation Dr Paul Dansted says Vibrio parahaemolyticus are naturally occurring bacteria that are found in seawater.

“Statistics show a recent spike in cases, with 22 since the beginning of the year. This compares with 14 for the first three months of 2020 and four for the same period in 2019.

“Symptoms may include watery or bloody diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and a headache. The consequences can be more serious for people with weakened immunity, the young,

the elderly and frail, and pregnant women. To be safe to eat, thoroughly cook mussels at above 65 degrees Celsius for one minute. If you get sick, phone Healthline for advice on 0800 611 116 or seek medical attention immediately. If possible, store and refrigerate any leftover food for testing.

Firefighters from Te Kopuru and Dargaville were called into action to extinguish a large fire in woodland near the Pouto Road, south of Dargaville.

Dramatic footage shared on social media shows the volunteers battling flames that swept through a stand of pines and scrub, sending up a pall of smoke that was visible as far away as Dargaville. Helicopters with monsoon buckets were also deployed to the scene to ensure that the fire didn’t spread.

Despite recent scattered rain, forested areas in the rural Kaipara remain tinder dry. The fire season remains strictly ‘by permit only’.

The Pouto blaze follows a busy week for local firefighters, with no less than six call-outs by the Dargaville station house siren on Monday alone.

It prompted a message of support from the town’s chief fire officer and reminding locals of the sacrifices made by local businesses to keep the rescue service running efficiently.

“Big thanks to all our volunteers for a massive effort,” said the Dargaville CFO via a widely shared social media post.

“More importantly, a huge thank you to the employers of our volunteers. They are the ones that make it possible for our guys and girls to go out and help the community when they need it the most.”

“These businesses take a financial hit by not only being short-staffed while our firefighters are on a call-out, but

most of them keep paying their staff while they’re out.

“On days like today, it would be impossible to do what we do without the support of our local employers.

So please go out and support them on behalf of us and help them keep us available.”

After complaints on social media opining that Dargaville’s fire siren should be removed, it’s also timely to note that the siren does not simply summon firefighting volunteers. It also serves as a warning to clear a path for fire trucks, ambulances and police cars attending emergencies.

When you hear the siren, be on the lookout for first responders and make way; lives could be at stake and seconds count. ¢

A line from a movie comes to mind; ‘if you were to win the beauty show, how would you like to make a difference’? ‘World Peace’ was the reply, which is a very corny line.

Yes, world peace would be amazing but will never happen for so many reasons: poverty, greed, religion, power, envy, anger, pride — just to list a few.

How do we change that? Well, in little old New Zealand, we probably can’t change what is happening in the world, but we can make changes in our own back yard I’m sure.

Any one of us can start very simply by being a good neighbour. Do you know your neighbours? Do you respect people’s peace and quiet, avoid mowing lawns too early on a Sunday, turn down loud music in the wee small hours, and stop your dog from barking, for example. These are such easy things to do and appreciated by those that live around you.

How do we make a difference to our community? That would seem a lot more complicated, with a lot more help needed from the central government.

Child obesity is an issue in NZ. How do we change that? Some things would be easy to change. Get children outside, playing in the dirt, climbing trees, and putting their phones, tablets and Playstations away.

Something else that could be done is a tax on sugary foods, like soft drinks & sweets and removing GST from fresh fruit and vegetables. It’s simple and I don’t know why it couldnt work. What the government loses in revenue from GST they make up for in taxes on sugar.

Homelessness remains another major problem.

So many social issues need to be addressed, and the question is — is the central government actually making a difference? I can’t see it myself.

How can we help as individuals? I’m not sure we can, but I also don’t think the new housing policies that Labour announced last week are going to help either.

It has certainly helped first home buyers, which is great, but where are the houses for them to buy coming from?

Probably rental investment properties, displacing tenants, who then become homeless, and so goes the merrygo-round.

There are simply not enough homes for all. Sorting the RMA’s replacement to make it easier to build or use land that is currently not classed as a residential area is one idea; building up, not out is another.

Our justice system seems to be very skewed. For example, a retired housemaster of Dilworth School (a facility set up to help and support children with behavioural issues or difficult family situations) was only given three years imprisonment for long-term sexual abuse of children in his charge.

How is that possible or right?

Mental health in New Zealand is also a major problem, especially in our youth.

How can we help with that? Some really simple ideas come to mind. Ask your child how their day was and how they are doing, then listen to what they are telling you.

Reduce how much time they are using social media platforms, and deal with bullying as soon as it is known about.

Don’t be ashamed to ask for help from whoever you need it from, and keep asking if you don’t like the answers.

No, not world peace, but every little change we make must help. ¢

A recent open day at Kai Iwi Lakes displayed the importance of this scenic and historic location in terms of both tourism and ecology.

p Kai Iwi Lakes proved popular for tourists all summer long, with record numbers visiting the Kaipara’s freshwater swimming and boating spot for 2021

Attended by the Northland Regional Council, Coast Guard, Kaipara District Council, Foundation North, Water Safety NZ and many others, the day was a chance for locals and visitors alike to appreciate the biodiversity of the dune lake environment.

This message was especially pertinent following a koi carp scare earlier in 2021, which had the lakes’ custodians on the lookout for these invasive pest fish.

It was all good news on the day, however, as the sun shone for free snorkelling excursions and waka on the water thanks to Te Hikuwai O Waka Ama

Club. Late-season campers mingled with curious locals and learned about the ecosystem of the lakes, which have been a valuable source of freshwater since pre-European times on the west coast.

More adventurous snorkelers were able to book in for a night tour of Lake Taharoa, the biggest of the cluster of lakes formed thousands of years ago by the uplift of the coastline. Others, meanwhile, were content to enjoy one of the last hot and sunny days of water activities before daylight savings and the coming of winter rains to replenish the visibly diminished lake levels after a long, hot season. ¢

A window on farming life u by Andy Bryenton

An estimated 2,500 Kiwis visited 37 farms last week as part of the nationwide Open Farms Day, an initiative aimed at showing people the realities of farming life and how farmers are working hard to improve environmental outcomes.

Open Farms Founder Daniel Eb noted that 2021’s visitor interest and turnout exceeded expectations, as families and individuals from towns and cities satiated their curiosity about the ‘state of the art’ in modern farming. It is only the second time the event has been run, and it seems to be growing in popularity and profile, he says.

“It was great to see farmers designing activities to help Kiwis touch, feel and taste their way back into food and farming,” says Eb. “We saw bush tours, petting zoos, working dog demonstrations, conservation walks, soil experiments and lots of good old-school fun.”

Beef + Lamb New Zealand were big supporters of this window into the farming life, which educates and informs at a time when a perceived divide exists between town and country, despite the rural sector powering our economy through Covid-19.

“A big thank you to all the farms who opened their gates this year to give people a genuine on-farm experience. We know how important it is for farmers to share their story.
