p Redhill near Te Kopuru hosted motocross action aplenty, as the Penrite Northland MX Championships came to town, with riders in a variety of categories taking to the track for glory. These small racers were content to tackle a slightly less hair-raising track in the juniors’ section on Sunday.

Still, there was nothing small about the determination shown by even the youngest competitors as they matched their skills against the terrain. Across MX open, juniors, veterans and many other categories, points were earned toward the championship title. This first round opened the contest, with the second held in Whangarei next week.

The cancellation of the Northland Field Days due to alert level two and its limit on crowds to 100 people is “devastating news for Kaipara and wider Northland,” says Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith.

The official event cancellation was made last Sunday afternoon, following the government 6am level three lockdown in Auckland, with level two in the rest of the country, which will extend for a week.

Dr Smith said the disappointment of losing the field days event would be keenly felt in Dargaville and a wider area “as the biggest industrial event in Northland” with a flow-on into the local economy.

“Last year, we did get our event before Covid-19 cancelled the national field days event, as well as Central Districts.

However, we should take the long-term

view and know the Northland Field Days will be back stronger, and I certainly look forward to next year.”

The Northland Field Days Committee in its statement said: ‘It is with very heavy hearts that the decision has been made to cancel the 2021 Northland Field Days event, which was due to start on Thursday, March 4.

‘We will be here on-site from 7.30am to 5pm each day to give assistance wherever we can.

‘The Northland Field Days has said right from the start of organising our 2021 event that should we have to cancel for reasons directly related to

Covid-19, we would refund all paid site fees 100%. Many exhibitors who have had to cancel in the last month or so have chosen to leave their site fees with us as a credit towards the 2022 event to retain their site. It will also be an option offered to our exhibitors and food vendors.’

The NFDI also said in its statement several community groups that had volunteered as part of fundraising efforts would be affected as well as the Northland business community.

‘We would like to thank all involved in our event for their ongoing support and understanding.’ ¢

This time around, there was everything from art and preserves to intricately crafted birds and beetles made from recycled cutlery on display, with seedlings, clothes, food and more in between. There’s another market coming in late March, for another chance to come and browse as well as to enjoy an outdoor meal. Many children achieved their personal best with Shiree Drinnan from year eight winning the annual Hooper Cup Medley,” says teacher Eden Hakaraia. “The cup was gifted to the school by the Hooper family 10 years ago.

Gwenda Maclean, a resident of the area for many years, presented the cup to Shiree. We had a wonderful whanau attendance and ended the day with a working bee and community BBQ.”

Those involved with plans to transition Dargaville’s racecourse from its previous incarnation as a sports venue to a new part of town are calling for public help to retain the asset.

With plans advancing toward the establishment of a new retirement, residential and commercial precinct on the site of the Dargaville racecourse, citizens of the town may have thought that any plans by the racing industry to seize all or part of this community asset were over. The Dargaville Community Development Board and local iwi Ngati Whatua are on board with the plan to turn the now ‘closed for racing’ course into a fresh asset at a time when housing and land are in short supply.

Nevertheless, negotiations with the racing industry are ongoing, with the previous incumbent Minister of Racing Winston Peters now out of the picture.

Dargaville Racing Club wants to make the change and forge ahead, but, as DRC committee member Richard Alspach explains, the industry is still insisting that some portion of the freehold, charitably donated, community-owned land should fall to them.

“Last year, the Dargaville Racing Club called on the people of this community to flood the New Zealand First stand at the field days to lobby for alterations to the Racing Industry bill that threatened the ownership of the racing track,” says Richard Alspach.

“You turned out in spades, and there were some alterations to the bill, but the racecourse is still under threat, and once again, we need your support.”

In last week’s Lifestyler, we published a comprehensive article laying out the planned developments for this community asset; how this development was going to benefit Dargaville in the immediate future, as well as into the future in a manner that the DRC and other stakeholders agree on.

“As the article pointed out, we are making good progress, but we still have a problem with the New Zealand Racing Industry, who still think they are entitled to a fair chunk of our asset,” says Mr Alspach.

“Remember, we hold this asset in private title, unencumbered. We are in negotiation with the racing industry, albeit that it is a little one-sided at this stage, and we are hopeful that reason will prevail. If reason doesn’t triumph, then the struggle will get into the political arena. Which means we will need the support of politicians.”

Hence his call to action, echoed by other stakeholders in the racecourse

development and those who wish to see Dargaville progress as a growing community.

“Please, everybody, contact your local MP or political party representative, and make your view known. No need to get into a lengthy discussion. Just state simply: ‘Dargaville Race Course belongs to the Dargaville Community, nobody else’. Believe me, if enough of you do — it will have an impact.” ¢

arly New Zealand Banknotes dated before 1932 are currently fetching big money! This is according to Mr Tony Grant, author of the John Bertrand New Zealand Coin & Banknote Catalogue.

Mr Grant is in Dargaville this Friday on a buying trip for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd and would be very keen to see any of these issues. “We will pay at least $300 for any undamaged Ten Shilling or One Pound banknote

from a New Zealand trading bank dated 1932 or before.

Denominations of five pounds and higher would be worth from $700. “Any banknote dated prior to 1900 would be worth at least $1000” said Mr Grant.

Also purchased are any Reserve Bank of New Zealand pre-decimal issues, especially 50 Pound notes. All overseas banknotes are also wanted, especially early Pacific Island issues.

Collectors Need War Medals

urrently, throughout NZ and the world there is a big demand by collectors for war medals. These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the war medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.

General service medals from both the First and Second World Wars will also be purchased, but as can be imagined these were awarded in fairly large numbers. “If a group of medals has any special award for bravery such as the Military Medal, Military or Flying Cross or other medals for Distinguished Conduct or Meritorious Service, these can add great value to a group” stated Mr Tony Grant, buyer for John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. “Many families have old medals, some dating back to early Imperial days, that they are not sure what to do with. The Dargaville Lions Club telephone directory is a local institution with a history going back two decades or more. Now a new edition is stepping into the digital age for 2021.

Country singer Wendy Maree only moved to Dargaville a year and a half ago; she credits her time there, playing with the Northern Wairoa Country Music Club, as the inspiration for what’s becoming a soaring career in song.

With its large-size type that’s easy to read and its handy maps, emergency numbers and commercial listings, the slim volume serves 4,000 west Kaipara homes.

“It’s free to every household, from Waiopua to Paparoa and across to Tangiteroria,” says Lions Club member Ross Murdoch.

“We’re grateful for help with distribution from supporters out in the rural areas, and of course, there are 35 volunteers who help in making the book, from proofreading advertisements to collecting numbers.”

With guest artist sets booked at the major Thames, Te Aroha and Karapiro country music festivals of 2021, and coming from recent success in front of big crowds in Taranaki, Taumarunui and the local Wai Worri Woolshed Muster in the north, the local musician says that the members of the NWCMC boosted her confidence.

“I started playing country music about 10 years ago, as I enjoyed the genre, “ says Wendy. “The start of it was when my ex-partner told me I couldn’t sing; I set out to prove him wrong.

“I entered an Auckland-based country music contest and came second, which was vindication enough. Until joining up with the country music club in my new home town of Dargaville, I’d not considered myself a performer for big crowds.”

That changed with the gentle encouragement of fellow musicians.

Towards a better Kaipara Have your say The Council is planning its work for the next ten years and now is the time for you to give feedback on our proposals.

Most of the Council’s spending will go on core services such as roads, infrastructure and other community facilities that are already planned.

Elected Members have set a goal to keep rate increases below 5%. For the first year of the Long Term Plan they propose an average increase of 3.37%. This may change up or down, depending on the feedback they receive.

Museum bush updated Recognition awards now open

An area of native specimen bush adjacent to The Kauri Museum at Matakohe has been revitalised as a public attraction and learning tool with funding from Kaipara Community Grants.

“The bush was planted more than 35 years ago to showcase the living native trees that are seen as timber panels in the museum,” said general manager Dr Tracey Wedge.

“Over the years, thousands of visitors to the area have enjoyed the opportunity to walk through and acquaint themselves with our living heritage. Schools have used it for natural history lessons, and this feature is being spruced up by new signage for the trees so they can be immediately identified.”

The initiative is supported by the Matakohe Environs Group, Otamatea Harbour Care, Enviroschools and the Department of Conservation after the signage of 30 years ago was dilapidated and with some signs lost.

“DOC has provided two foot-washing stations at the bush entrances, which ensures visitors are familiar with how to care for our kauri forests,” said Dr Wedge.

“Enviroschools and Mark Vincent from Otamatea HarbourCare both assisted museum staffer Thelma Nash to identify the trees in the bush and what was missing. The list was drawn up, and a successful funding application was made. The new signs were professionally created locally.

“Come the winter season, any trees missing from the specimen bush will be planted.

“This is a brilliant resource for our community, our schools and our visitors.” ¢

The Northland environment sector and nationally, education excellence, are areas being targeted in awards, which are now open for applications.

Northland Regional Council’s annual Environmental Awards’, with a new category this year recognising ‘action in climate change ’ opened last Monday, February 22 and will run until early April. While nationally, the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards are open until April 16.

Regional council chair Penny Smart says the awards were conceived as the NRC’s way of publicly thanking those who worked with councillors and staff in their shared mission to create a healthy environment, strong economy and resilient communities.

“Examples include efforts to get rid of pests so native species can flourish, clearing weeds, planting erosion-prone land, stream banks and wetlands, and sustainability projects in schools.

“This year’s awards cover eight categories: community, pest management, education, water quality improvement, industry, leadership, kaitiakitanga and climate change open to individuals, community groups, schools, whanau, hapu, iwi, businesses and leaders.”

Entries and nominations can be made via www.nrc.govt.nz/ environmentalawards.

“The prime ministerial awards are to recognise early learning services, kohanga reo, schools and kura in supporting children and young people to succeed,” says Minister of Education Chris Hipkins.

“These awards celebrate exceptional teaching practices that are making a difference not just to learners, but to their whanau and communities as well.”

Distribution Charge Discount In the year commencing 1 April 2021, Northpower Limited, will provide a discount for the benefit of Northpower consumers totalling an estimated $11.7m. This will be a discount on Northpower’s distribution charges and the amount which each consumer receives for each eligible ICP will be determined by the consumption notified to Northpower by the electricity retailers for the 12-month period to 30 September 2021 in two bands as follows: • Eligible ICPs with consumption exceeding 2,000 kWh will receive a single discount of $216.

• Eligible ICPs with consumption between 1 kWh and 2,000 kWh will receive a single discount of $55.

To qualify as an eligible ICP, an ICP must be supplied from the Northpower electricity network with a registry status of “Active” (Connected) on 1 November 2021, have a current customer of an electricity retailer on that date, and the net consumption advised by the electricity retailers to Northpower for the 12-month period to 30 September 2021 for the ICP must be 1 kWh or greater. Discounts will be applied via a credit on the electricity bill from the current electricity retailer during November or December 2021.

Northpower Pricing – Key changes for 2021/2022 We collect the money we need to run our electricity network, and maintain and upgrade our assets through lines prices charged to retailers. Retailers then decide how and what they want to charge consumers. We’ve just set the prices which we will charge retailers for 2021/2022. The total revenue we expect to collect from retailers and direct connect consumers is up 1.7% compared to last year.

Time of Use Pricing Last year we introduced Time of Use pricing for residential and business consumers with communicating smart meters. Time of Use pricing has different charges dependent on the time of day that electricity is used. This is because electricity networks are a bit like roads, in that they can get congested at times of the day when everyone wants to use them.

When networks get congested, we then have to invest to increase capacity to accommodate this increase in peak demand, a little like building extra lanes onto a road.

This year we have increased the difference between peak rates and off-peak rates to approximately 2c/kWh for most price plans. This signals that if our network reaches its capacity at peak times (mornings and evenings) we might have to spend money to increase the capacity, and if you can shift consumption to off-peak times (like putting the dishwasher on or charging your EV overnight) we can reduce the cost of upgrades and share the benefit with you through lower prices.

We expect the difference between peak and off-peak to continue increasing each year as we gradually adjust our prices.

Fixed Prices We are gradually adjusting our prices to increase the fixed component, and reduce the variable component. This reflects that the costs to run an electricity network are mostly fixed, and other than building extra capacity for peak times, it does not generally cost us much more if you use more electricity. Our network has capacity outside of peak times, and we want you to be able to use it at little to no cost rather than it going to waste. As such, over time most of our revenue will come from the fixed component, and the variable component will be used to provide an incentive to shift load out of peak periods.

Distribution Charge Discount Northpower, with the support of the Northpower Trust will pay a distribution charge discount for the benefit of electricity consumers connected to our network, of $248.40 including GST (for most consumers) in November or December this year, up from $220.80 (including GST) last year.

Saint Peter’s church is a heritage-listed chapel and hall situated in Te Kopuru, one of the oldest houses of worship in the west Kaipara. Now it’s receiving a new renovation from steps to steeple, thanks to the Provincial Growth Fund.

The Ruawai Lions Club annual auction takes place next week, with a hoard of donated goods across all categories going under the hammer for charity on Saturday, March 13.

“There’s a saying ‘be careful what you wish for’,” said the church’s secretary and project manager, Kaye Welch and Viv Biddles. “In our case, the dream has come true, and I’m sure it will be the same for our fellow parishioners and the whole village of Te Kopuru.”

OBITUARY

In memory of Richard Drake Well known for his tireless advocacy of farmers, his work with Northpower, and his assistance in the community of Tangiteroria and the wider Northland region, Richard John Drake passed away on February 17 at the age of 81.

Richard farmed at Tangiteroria, and at a fairly early stage in his career, he took on a political role, advocating for and representing rural communities. He was the sub-provincial president for the Northern Wairoa Federated Farmers, representing close to 800 members.

It’s a testament to his hard-working attitude that he also took on the role of treasurer of the Auckland Province

of the federation. When he started, the finances were all recorded in a hand ledger, and when he finally stepped down, they were fully computerised.

During this time, Richard was elected to the Electoral College of the Meat and Wool Boards. He held this position until the organisations disbanded and went on to serve with the Beef and Lamb Council. Combining the roles of

farming advocate and representative with that of an ardent conservationist, Richard also served for nine years as chairman of the Northland Conservation Board. During that span, Richard was one of the architects of the entire Northland Conservation Strategy, an unpaid labour of love for this avid hiker and outdoorsman.

He was involved with preserving and promoting Maori culture, embracing his Ngai Tahu whakapapa and serving as chairman of the Hihiaua Cultural Centre in Whangarei, a project helmed

by Ngapuhi.

Richard’s longest tenure was with the Northpower trust, which benefitted from his diligence and skill for two decades.

He was deputy chairman for at least half that time and was involved in detailed

work setting up the constitution and subsequent reviews. Richard was also one of the driving forces behind the construction and management of the Tangiteroria Sports Complex, another 20-year commitment that benefitted the wider community.

For this and many other charitable deeds, he was named Kaipara Citizen of the Year in 2019. Alongside his work and his works of community service, Richard was a devoted husband and father, celebrating 50 years of marriage to his wife Rosemary not long ago. He had moved to be closer to family in Canterbury after retiring from farming life, and passed peacefully in Christchurch Hospital, remembered fondly by his many relatives, colleagues and friends. ¢

“The club has been going for more than 100 years now. It was founded around 1910, and we would love to have people come along and have a go,” says club member Geoff Wilcox.

“Our club president Tom Kerr came up with the Friday night idea as it is a good family sport. Children from around 10 years of age are welcome to come along as well. You just need to wear flat-soled shoes or jandals, as heels will damage the green.

“Bowls is a great game to get into, especially for the older generation. It is not just social, but it also provides good exercise as you are out in the fresh air, and it takes skill. It is a work out on

your arms, legs and eyes, and it also improves motor skills. It is a bit like golf — you never get perfect at it.

“Once you get involved, you normally keep playing as it is not boring. It is competitive as well, and we often play other clubs from across the Kaipara and Whangarei. We have Tuesday minitournaments for five hours during the day and competitions such as the recent club championship triples.

“We look forward to meeting new people on Friday nights. Bowls are provided, and experienced players will be on hand to assist.

Baylys Beach Surf Lifesavers Club captain Kyran Gillespie has made nationwide news as he experienced one of his most unusual rescues this year recently.

“I have been based at the Piha Surf Lifesaving Club as paid staff this summer,” says Kyran.

“Recently, surfer Ben Searancke was surfing alone at Karekare Beach like he often did. He lost his board and got swept around the corner into Mercer Bay and onto the rocks. Engines roared, and mud flew as motocross riders took to the track on Sunday at Redhill, near Te Kopuru, for the Penrite Northland MX Championship.

Fine weather and a damped-down track combined to create good conditions for both junior, novice and experienced

During three decades in business, real estate professional Jean Johnson says she has often been busy, sometimes surprised but never bored.

The Kaipara District Council’s Long Term pPlan spanning 2021 to 2031 is a document that will affect the direction of the entire district. Public consultation on the points it raises is to be facilitated with a pair of online meetings.

The LTP, which is due to be released on March 1, touches on issues of infrastructure, waste management, council assets, water supply and other civic amenities. There is a month-long window for public submissions on all aspects of the plan, from March 1 to April 1. During March, two KDC-led virtual ‘town hall’ meetings will take place online.

Hosted on Facebook, these will be interactive sessions with councillors in attendance accepting questions on the LTP. The discussion document Toward a Better Kaipara will be available online from the KDC website prior to the Facebook live sessions on Thursday, March 4 and the following Tuesday, March 9. Each will run from 7–8pm with questions submitted textually and then answered by elected officials.

Dangerous trees spark petition

Kaipara residents are being urged to have their say on plans to address some of the Northland region’s most pressing transport issues.

The appeal by the Pahi Reserve Society is aimed at Kaipara District Council and the Northland Regional Council after years of past approaches have been rejected on the basis that they are “listed” on the New Zealand Tree Register.

The Northland Regional Transport Committee will hold a series of public drop-in sessions on both the Draft Regional Land Transport Plan 2021– 2027 and the Draft Regional Public Transport Plan 2021–2031 as part of a public consultation process.

The Baylys Beach Society is once again hosting its annual Beach Family Fun Day to celebrate and coincide with National Seaweek on Saturday, March 13.

National Seaweek is celebrated every year by many communities and schools around New Zealand. The theme this year is Connecting With Our Seas.

Festivities begin at 2pm and run until 5pm, at both the beach access point and the town’s new community centre.

“BBS has always chosen to invite everyone to come and enjoy our spectacular beach, participate in all the activities, displays and challenges on offer, win prizes and share in a free barbecue,” says BBS chairperson Cheryl Carmichael.

Regarding Mayday calls The yacht, Tribe, which broadcast a Mayday call recently was found in Bream Bay the following day about four nautical miles (seven kilometres) south of Whangarei.

That is about 80 nautical miles (150km) north of where it made its Mayday call.

A Maritime NZ staff member met with Tribe’s skipper to discuss what happened and what lessons can be learned from the incident.

“Irrespective of the circumstances of this incident, anyone on the water who believes their life is in danger should not hesitate to make a Mayday call or activate a distress beacon — delay can be fatal,” said Rescue Coordination Centre NZ senior search and rescue officer, Chris Henshaw.

“We span from Dargaville to Mangawhai and everywhere else in the Kaipara District, including Wellsford and surrounds,” says chairman Blake Worsfold.

“We now have a Kaipara development officer, Kalem Tana. He has been visiting schools and setting up basketball sessions in Dargaville, which is very exciting for us.”

Kalem held his first community meeting in Dargaville last week.

“This term, we are also looking to establish Walking Basketball for former players or those who are less mobile to enjoy the game. It has been tried in Kaitaia and was very

successful,” says Kalem. “Walking Basketball takes away physical limitations and helps less able people to compete in the programme. We are also holding our year seven and eight intermediate competition every Wednesday afternoon from 4pm at Otamatea High School starting this week for seven weeks.

“There is a lot of untapped sporting talent in Kaipara. Our main goal as an organisation is to bring basketball to people who wouldn’t normally get the opportunity to.”

Dargaville Honda may not have the opportunity to showcase their fleet at field days this year due to Covid-19, instead bringing their latest deals in-store. Nevertheless, their quad bikes and off-roaders have been part of the field days tradition since day one.

The team at Honda remembers rolling out the brand’s earliest four-wheelers and the now-classic ATC 185 farm trike. Many local farmers will recall this balloon-tyred little three-wheeler as the first step between the old twostroke kickstart farm bike and the quad of today.

When the very first field days was opened in 1985 at the Dargaville Racecourse, the concept of the quad was in its infancy.

The TRX200 was the debut for the platform. Honda’s first four-wheel ATV was powered by a durable, single-cylinder four-stroke engine running through a five-speed dual-range transmission with shaft drive and reverse. The warm, late summer weather we’re experiencing is the perfect time to enjoy a proper ice cream sundae. They’re done beautifully by many of our locals, but where did the dessert come from?

American cities Ithaca, New York and Two Rivers, Wisconsin, have been locked in debate as to the origin of the sundae for a proverbial ‘month of Sundays’.

At least, since 1892, when an Ithaca soda fountain owner decided to catch the post-church crowds during summer with a sweet treat. The problem was, a previous Wisonsinite had already had this idea in 1881.

In those days, soda fountains with ‘new’ fizzy drinks like Coca Cola were all the rage, but considered to be a hotbed of teenage fraternisation. Many moralising American towns banned them from selling fizzy drinks on a Sunday, in the same manner as beer or spirits.

Apparently, Ed Berners of Wisconsin decided to market ice cream on the sabbath day instead. His creation, an ice cream dish with the decorations and cherry on top of a tropical cocktail, caught on and bypassed the strange rule against fizzy drinks.

The two towns have argued ever since as to what makes up a real ‘sundae’ and why the spelling changed. Ithaca

While there’s an end in sight so long as the vaccine does its job worldwide, there have been lessons learned through the year of lockdowns and social distancing, which should be kept in mind even when the ‘year of Covid’ is a story our grandchildren don’t quite believe happened. One that stands out is how, in tough times for charitable organisations and volunteer services, it’s been local businesses who have led the charge to keep these groups going.

Whenever economic times are tight, those who provide volunteer services or charitable aid feel the pinch twice. Once from the lack of ready donations coming in from a cash-strapped public, and once again, as it’s often at tough times that we need support the most.

Our rescue helicopter service, firefighters, food banks and many others have weathered the Covid storm thanks to generosity above and beyond the call of duty. Much of it has come from local businesses.

When every coin counts, sponsorship to plan an event or a prize to raffle off means the world.

Those gold coins and small donations add up, but sometimes it takes a big push and some seed capital to secure venues, market competitions or fundraisers, or even just to get the ball rolling. Invariably, there are generous businesses in our small towns who step up to the plate.

Some give in kind, depending on what they make or sell.

The introduced German wasp has become more than a stinging pest, costing apiarists up to $130 million annually and reducing pollination by bees for orchard crops. Now its days may be numbered.

Ararua’s annual horse trek is coming around again on March 6, with organisers promising a relaxing and scenic ride through rolling farm country, followed by a barbecue feast.

New Zealand’s Environmental Protection Agency has come up with a way to tackle the pests in their nests, and all without toxic chemicals. The German wasp has taken over in some parts of New Zealand, with Tasman District now rated as having the highest wasp density a hectare of any place on earth.

With the same species established in the Kaipara and Northland, it could well happen here too, say scientists who have brought in two new species to stop the spread.

“Invasive wasps pose a significant threat, having a negative impact on biodiversity and the food supply of native insects and birds such as kaka and tui. The wasps also attack beehives, resulting in reduced pollination and honey production,” says the EPA’s General Manager of Hazardous Substances and New Organisms, Dr Chris Hill. “We are pleased to be playing our part to support conservation and our primary industries.”

To do so, they have taken the rare step of bringing new, introduced insects into the ecosystem. The wasp nest beetle lays its own eggs inside wasp nests, supplanting the stinging insects, while the African hoverfly looks so much

like a wasp that it is allowed into wasp nests, where it lays its own eggs. When these hatch, the hoverfly larvae eat the smaller wasp larvae, killing the nest off. Both species are harmless to humans and honeybees.

Tasman District Council, which is at the epicentre of the world’s worst wasp infestation, called for this solution to be implemented, and it will be trialled there first before the beetle and hoverfly are more widespread, suppressing the German wasp throughout New Zealand. ¢

The trek is the main fundraiser for the Ararua Hall, a community hub for the small town, which serves as a venue for many local clubs, events and gatherings.

Having a horse trek to pay for necessary maintenance and upkeep was the logical choice, says organiser Beth De Groot, as there is a strong equestrian following in the rural Kaipara region.

One reason respondents gave was that the battery saw was lighter. That meant less aching muscles after a day’s work and safer conditions up in the air or on the ground. A saw that’s easier to position, manage and manoeuvre is one that’s harder to drop or mishandle.

The lack of exhaust fumes proved a breath of fresh air for operators and the lack of engine vibration made for more comfortable cutting.

Of course, this is just an example of Husqvarna’s way of thinking. They’re applying the same engineering mindset to mowers, developing robotic systems to take back suburban weekends.

They’re putting more power and utility into ride-ons, making large yard maintenance easier and safer, and they’re looking at all the other small petrol-engined power equipment in use today with an eye toward improving its efficiency and design. ¢

Soil is a complex mixture of solid minerals and organic components, interspersed with water, air and living organisms. When a tractor or implement weighs down on this structure, the gaps close up, expelling the life-giving water and oxygen, which help good bacteria and soil microbes thrive. There’s even the chance that the roots of plants will have to divert around compacted clumps, expending the energy of the plant that you’d rather went into saleable crops.

On modern farms around the world, yield losses due to compaction are roughly 20%. It can even reach 50% in certain cases, such as areas with damp loam or a clay-based soil structure.

That’s a significant financial setback, so tyre and tractor manufacturers have been hard at work to rectify the issue and provide smart solutions. One example comes from a recent British initiative on soil health and compaction.

how farming practices must change to protect productivity. Mr Williams suggested that up to 30% of soils in the UK are severely degraded. “Where soils have been placed in this category, there is very little porosity, and the soil has become grey and compacted, making it difficult for crops to root and for the land to drain,” he explained.

“Yes,” said the lady. “Me hubby and I had planned a cupla days in town, sum shoppin’ and sum nice dinners ina restronts and such. it is such a disappointment.” She hada funny way of holdin’ her cuppatees too, with a littil finger stuck up ina air. Responsible farmers are ready to do what it takes to help clean up our waterways, even though the burden of infrastructure change is not going to be light. There’s a willingness to pitch in, as evidenced by the massive, voluntary riparian planting efforts achieved by the rural sector in the past eight years.

No one contests that unswimmable rivers are a bad thing. There are all kinds of technologies and practices being introduced to help with the rural part of the solution. A smart example is a move to reduce nitrogen fertiliser or the fact that on most farms, all water crossings are now blocked off from stock. There’s an acceptance of some of the new rules

coming in with the government’s new Essential Freshwater Policy, though there is some head-scratching at others.

Excluding cattle and deer from all land that has more than a 10-degree slope is one such rule, coming in by 2025.

Think about Kiwi farmland. Note how, in anywhere outside Canterbury and the Waikato, it tends to be less than

Then there are the rules about winter pugging. That’s the holes the bovine hoof makes in soft ground. To quote the new rules ‘Pugging (more than 5cm deep) must not cover more than 50% of the cropped area. In addition, pugging must not be deeper than 20cm at any point.’ This well-meaning scintilla of regulation may very well have been written by someone who has never seen the size of a real cow, let alone a bull, or seen real Kiwi rural mud after a flood or storm.

Does the government propose employing pugging police with tiny rulers to crawl through every paddock, or will this rule be used as a big stick to punish anyone who has ‘non-political thoughts’?

More pointedly, where’s the other side of the coin? Farmers will take the knocks, adjust, and get on with providing a big slice of the economy. However, at the same time, city sewers continue to disgorge something more vile than nitrogen run-off almost every time it rains.

Auckland ‘boasts’ seven permanently unswimmable beaches due to faecal contamination and a further list which are off-limits one day in five. Some are as far from the CBD as Whangaparaoa and Great Barrier.

A proposed rate rise to clean up the mess, separating sewers and storm drains in a system politely called ‘legacy’ (read as: antiquated and clapped out) has urbanites frothing at the $94 each household annual cost by 2031. Farmers can only look at such a tiny figure in such a long timescale and go green with envy. ¢
