“I will get to the bottom of New Zealand’s pre-European history if it’s the last thing I do” This clear intention was given by Noel Hilliam, co-author of the book, To the Ends of the Earth, launched on Saturday at Dargaville Town Hall. Addressing the launch gathering, he said: “I have now stepped up to the line and asked the government to set up a Royal Commission of Enquiry into the true history of New Zealand.’’ The book postulates that a race emanating from Europe settled New Zealand some centuries before the Maori arrived. On a weekend of a number of major events in Dargaville and district, the co-authors of the book, Maxwell Hill, Hilliam and Gary Cook were supported by a Town Hall packed to the doors. “Max approached us as he had done some research, and Gary and I had the back up information, including photographs taken over the years of many of the sites in question,” said Mr Hilliam. He has been researching and exploring the west coast for many years and has an unrivalled knowledge of ancient shipwrecks and other coastal features.

He said the book launch exceeded the authors’ expectations. “We put out 450 chairs and some people had to stand as well. There were visitors from Hamilton, Tauranga, Kaitaia and Bay of Islands. We estimated that 500 had turned up. Kaipara District Mayor, Neil Tiller, officiated as master of ceremonies and MP Mike Sabin, Waitahi rangatira, George Connolly, and the book’s editor, John Aldworth, also came,” says Hilliam. continued on page 5 . . .
A wonderful weekend — and there’s more in store! With a break in the weather and a record crowd of revellers enjoying the best of Kaipara kai and hospitality this year’s Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival got off to a flying start last weekend. Visitors and locals alike flocked to Selwyn Park for a slice of the action, circulating among a field of brightly coloured marquees featuring everything from gourmet cooking to fairground fun.

With numbers far exceeding last year’s total the day was a smashing success, showcasing not just the best we have to offer locally but a nationwide buffet of fine foods and wines. Later in the afternoon there was action by the riverside as the contestants in this year’s Northern Wairoa Boating Club Raft Race braved the muddy waters. continued on page 5 . . .
