As a mark of respect for the victims of the recent terrorist attack in Christchurch, more than 200 people in the Northern Wairoa community united in support for those affected. The vigil was held on Friday, March 22, at the Dargaville Taha Awa Riverside Gardens where the large crowd gathered to share and take a stand against racism and violence. Many women wore headscarves in solidarity, and there was a strong police presence. The Northern Wairoa Anglican Church bells rang at 1.40pm to signal a moment of silence, reflection, prayer and remembrance for folk of all denominations and creeds.

The 243 cyclists began arriving around mid-morning after an early start from Opononi and the Hokianga Harbour. The stage was 83 kilometres long, travelling through the native bush and kauri trees of Waipoua Forest to Dargaville, where
the Dargaville Community Development Board had prepared a friendly welcome. Tables and umbrellas were on the lawn area at the boating club, flags were flying, and a band played, creating an upbeat atmosphere while
the competitors enjoyed refreshments and massages. Many cyclists reportedly said Dargaville was the most welcoming of their stops. continued on page 3 …
