p Ruawai turned 100 on Saturday and the whole town plus former residents and people from further afield came to celebrate the occasion. Among them were Mabel White, nee Wilson, who was the oldest person taking part, and her daughter Jane Rawlings who both had lots of fun reliving years gone by. The highlight of the weekend was the parade on Saturday that included old farm vehicles and machinery, plus a bullock team, vintage cars, new tractors and fire engines. The afternoon included a bus tour of local historic sites and a ferry cruise on the Northern Wairoa River. The town celebrations culminated on Saturday night in a centennial dinner that had been fully booked three weeks in advance.

Reyland, who was injured in a head-on crash on one of the bridges in 2012 that wrote off her car, says the bridges are dangerous, create an impediment to economic growth in the Kaipara and are

not in keeping with the requirements of a state highway. Mr Sabin says he and his staff have been working behind the scenes for the last two years to build a case to have the bridges replaced. continued on page 3 …
