 Competitors prepared for the second leg of the BDO Tour of Northland cycle race from Dargaville to Opononi last weekend. This year marked the 15th edition of the event which takes in both the east and west Coast of Northland’s Twin Coast Discovery Highway. More than 400 cyclists from New Zealand and overseas took part.

NEST ambassador and Ruawai businessman Anthony Blundell is spearheading a new rescue helicopter pad in the town which is expected to be operational late next month. The helipad, alongside the Ruawai College gymnasium will prove an allseason 24/7 operational facility which

will also provide emergency services to the surrounding area. “Whilst NEST usually finds a safe landing site near all the incidents it attends, what they are also looking for are permanent regional landing sites, available 24 hours and 365 days a year, to be put in place. Ruawai has been

highlighted as one of those regions,” Mr Blundell said. “The preferred site identified was a grassed area adjacent to the Ruawai College gymnasium which provides operationally safe conditions and access for all emergency personnel and resources.” continued on page 4 …
