p Mangawhai Museum is inspiring school students to understand, embrace and value their history, running an education programme based on the school curriculum. “We really wanted to target school children and get them interested in what we do,” said museum manager, Emma Gray.

“The programme draws on the information and displays in the museum, which link back to the history of the area. It’s going well and so far we have had 600 come through.” Children learn about such diverse topics as the ’Big Dig’ harbour restoration project undertaken 25 years ago, the conservation of the endangered fairy tern and also pioneer history. A highlight is a visit to the historic village. “Through visiting the museum and the village they learn why it’s important that our knowledge of the past is not only preserved, but also passed on,” said teacher, Sharee McKenzie.

As part of the project they will be writing about themselves, their families and their family history.

A new system, the Neighbourhood Healthcare Home programme, which aims to decrease patient wait times and maximise care, is set to go ‘live’ at the Dargaville Medical Centre on March 26.

Baylys Beach resident Rick Groves lived next to a Tegel broiler and other chicken farms for 12 years in Tuakau and says there were never any problems.

“The biggest problem is the rumours.

Even if they aren’t locals getting the jobs, they will become locals and will have to do their shopping here. If people look at Tegel’s track record they wouldn’t find any blemishes.”

When asked about the impact the farm could have on the neighbouring organic farm a Tegel spokesperson said: “We are still working through that at the moment and it will be something we will deal with at the hearings.” ¢

The programme is a teambased health care delivery model and collaborative venture between Northland District Health Board (NDHB) and the Northland Primary Health Organisation (NPHO). Dr Cathy Hurd of Dargaville Medical Centre (DMC) says the system is expected to free up 30 per cent of staff and patient time.

“People will notice a change when they call the DMC. Clinical support staff will be asking a few more questions to get the best care for patients.

“Doctors and nurses will be directly calling patients back for same day appointments to save time.

Everything will stay the same for walk-ins and emergencies,” she said.

Ms Hurd encourages patients with nonurgent queries to ring first so they can get an appointment rather than wait a long time at the centre.

“People can expect to see improved patient experience and efficiency to reduced wait times. The system will put more value on patient’s time and improve continuity of care.”

Kaipara Community Health Trust CEO, Debbie Evans, said the NDHB selected DMC to take part as they were looking for ways to enhance primary care.

“I would like to congratulate DMC on their willingness to make changes to their systems, which will help our community.” ¢

The meeting was arranged after a protest meeting where local residents were afraid of disruption from the proposed plant.

“I am looking forward to seeing how the community engage with this event,” Mayor Smith said.

“There are a number of requirements under the RMA that Tegel meet.”

Elected district councillor, Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock, also attended the event to gather more information for her constituents.

“We have not been given any 3D modelling or mock ups yet and we want to see what the farm will look like from Maungaraho and Tokatoka.

“These are designated outstanding natural features which have protection,” she said.

The Dargaville Little Theatre’s new musical adaptation of The Mad Hatter will bring everyone’s favourite characters to life but in a completely different light.

The musical, written, composed and directed by Julianne Parkinson, will be based on Alice in Wonderland from the Mad Hatter’s perspective as told by the Cheshire Cat and will be on stage for eight shows in June.

“When I was trying to pick musicals, I couldn’t find a script I was happy with and we were running out of time. I like to do really visual shows that make an impact,” she said.

“I looked at Alice in Wonderland, but there were difficult things to do such as shrinking and growing and I wasn’t sure we could do well.

“I wondered if there was a way to come up with a different story, but keep the visuals, so I decided to write a new

version. It’s still got all your favourite characters, but there are a few twists and turns.

“I’ve had a lot of help from assistant director and production manager, Eryn Wilson-Collins, and Deborah Parkinson, who is in the cast and helped out with a singing workshop.”

The cast is made up of more than 25 people and many of them have not been involved in theatre or musicals before.

“It’s going to be a very vibrant show,” Julianne says. “I feel like it’s got a good broad audience spectrum. It should get some toes tapping and illicit a few gasps. Basically I want people to feel something when they leave the theatre.” ¢

Kaimanawa horse muster looms u by Jill Dickie

Kaipara horse enthusiasts are being asked to open their homes for the upcoming Kaimanawa horse muster. Paparoabased coordinator, Simone Frewin, is encouraging people both experienced and new to wild horses to consider applying to rehome a horse.

“In the Kaipara District there are several Kaimanawas from musters dating back to 2008, who have settled into domestic life and exhibit how adaptable, versatile, and honest these hardy horses are,” said Ms Frewin.

“Hills are great for them. If they are well supplemented, they do ok on the clay and kikuyu, and the summer droughts suit such good doers.”

Applications for the bi-annual muster close on Sunday, April 1 and to date just 45 potential homes have been found for over 200 horses being rounded up.

Horses without new homes are not returned to the wild and are sent to the slaughterhouse. This year’s muster is scheduled for the third week of April.

Training and handling support is available from Kaimanawa Heritage Horses, from other Kaimanawa owners, and by learning with your horse under the guidance of Ms Frewin at her property in Paparoa.

Illegal dumping costing district u by Ayla Miller

It cost Kaipara District Council, and in turn ratepayers, $39,900 to clean up illegal dumping during the financial year July 2016 — June 2017.

According to a list from the KDC, some popular spots include Waihue Road between Dargaville and Parore West intersection, where dumping of general household waste in metal dump occurs on a regular basis. Opanake Road and Mahuta Gap Road are also common areas for regular illegal dumping of household waste.

Kaipara District Council spokesperson, Ben Hope, says there were 14 infringements issued for illegal disposal of waste last year of $330 each; meaning council still had outgoings of $35,280 towards cleaning up the rubbish — assuming all infringements were paid.

Love Kaipara project manager, Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock, believes tackling this issue requires collaboration between the community, local and central government to change attitudes towards dumping.

“Illegal waste disposal is a problem that can’t be appointed to one group of people. It happens in the commercial sector and in farming. Fly-tipping is just one part of it.

The Hospice Kaipara Kowhai Room has been providing a private, safe environment for patients and family for a quarter of a century.

The room was officially blessed and opened by Dargaville Hospital manager, Stephen McKernon, on March 4, 1993.

Hospice Kaipara lead clinical nurse, Annette Olsen, says the room is ‘vitally important.’

“We don’t have a hospice in-patient unit in the Kaipara and it’s wonderful there is this facility, where patients and families can come to be cared for close to home.”

The room is used for symptom management and end of life care and provides a place for patients and their families to be together 24 hours a day; under the full care of Dargaville Hospital nursing

staff and supported by volunteers.

“This is a District Health Board facility.

The DHB are really supportive of it and they have provided the room, staff and meals. It’s great having that relationship with them to provide this service,” said Annette.

“The Kowhai Room means the family members can be family instead of fulltime carers.”

The room was originally furnished by donations of the Chapel Committee, Dargaville Hospital and the local business community, to accommodate people in the last stages of terminal illness and allow their families to be by their side. ¢

This was the first step towards joining the fire brigade as a volunteer. “I found that it was a great challenge and I believe that this course taught us multiple skills that will be useful throughout life,” said Ross. “Some great skills we learnt include aspects like determination, perseverance and problem solving. I would definitely recommend to anyone that is interested to go to your local fire station and ask if you could be a part of their team to help and support your community.”

The club are looking for five new volunteers to help year six students with reading difficulties practise their skills.

“The students read to us, we don’t read to them. We just help them when they get stuck on words,” says Dargaville Rotarian, Brian Burnett.

This is the fourth year Rotary has helped out with this programme and Brian says it is all part of the club’s community service.

“This is a one-on-one programme and the books are chosen by the teachers to target the student’s reading ability.

“The school has a need and we have people who can help,” he said.

“Volunteers just need to be available once a week and to be patient.”

The service has a team of trained professionals and volunteers who run a food bank, a drop-in centre, provide counselling services, a monthly gettogether for senior citizens and support for families in crisis.

Another aspect of community need has been met by the purchase of a mini bus.

“We needed a turning bay as backing onto the road was a real problem. That’s where the idea began,” said staff member, Danny Morris.

“Then we moved onto improving access

to the house itself, which has been a hassle for a long time especially for young mums and the elderly.

“Finally, having come that far, we decided to upgrade the grounds to have them looking good and in keeping with the rest of the town.

“It’s now a much bigger project, and still at the design stage, but when we get it done all the hard work will be worth it.

“Having access that’s good for everyone is really important and it will be much safer for vehicles and people.” ¢

“This is a big step up for us,” says Johnnie, who plans to show the work of 15 to 20 artists.

“We have twelve signed up at present, plus myself. It’s also important to Becky and I that local artists are well represented. We have a really good group here and by supporting them there’s an opportunity to make Mangawhai an art buyers’ destination, alongside all the other attractions the area offers.”

The couple, who named the gallery after their daughter, Scarlet, will run it between them. An area has been set

aside as a studio and Johnnie will be working there five days a week.

Well known as an exponent of the realism school, Johnnie has always wanted to be an artist.

“I’ve been drawing since I could first hold a pencil and am both self and YouTube taught, which is a great way to learn and why I now share a lot of my techniques on social media to support other budding artists,” he explains. ”Up until three years ago I made my living in other ways, but then I realised it was time to spend my time doing something I loved and here we are.” ¢

The Mangawhai Art Trail on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 offers art lovers the opportunity to enjoy a wide and varied range of work from Mangawhai’s vibrant artistic community.

More than 50 artists will display their work at 19 locations ranging from paintings, ceramics, photography, sculpture, outdoor art and more. The event also offers a unique opportunity to meet with the artists. The event is run by Mangawhai Artists Inc to promote and support art in the community. Fighting erosion with trees The Northland Regional Council are encouraging landowners with erosion prone properties to get their orders in early for poplar and willow planting season.

With limited pole numbers, and an increasing uptake for planting across Northland, regional councillor, Rick Stolwerk, says this season’s supply is already being rapidly allocated.

Cr Stolwerk says when allocating poles, priority is given to applicants in areas the council has identified as having a high erosion risk.

“Supply of planting material is also dependant on having an NRC Farm Water Quality Improvement Plan or a specific NRC planting plan in place.”

To keep up with increasing demand, the council is continuing to expand its nursery operation, which is based south of Whangarei at Flyger Road, Mata.

“Last year we added a further 2.8 hectares to the existing 6.3 p hectare nursery, with plans in our upcoming Long Term Plan to increase output of the nursery significantly to match community demand.”

Cr Stolwerk says hill country farmers whose erosion prone properties drain to the Kaipara Harbour, are again eligible for a share of more than 3,500 fully subsidised poplar poles in a joint NRCMinistry for Primary Industries initiative.

After the communist revolution, Russia had sued for peace. Whole new armies marched west across Germany and Austria-Hungary, preparing to batter the defenders from the alps to the sea.

World War One Centennial ‘Operation Michael’, which had begun on March 21. A massive bombardment was followed by the first deployment of storm troopers by the German army — special assault squads armed with new weapons like submachine guns and automatic shotguns. Troopers of the line with bayonets and rifles would pour in behind.

The first thrust at Arras was held back at huge cost by the British. But that seven kilometre gap had the potential to sink the entire allied war effort — only just before the United States army could mobilise and turn the tide. On March 24, 100 years ago, the weary but battle hardened New Zealand forces in northern France were sent south to hold the line.

The Kiwis rushed into position with what British support could be mustered, just in time. Troopers who were there speak of their scouts coming back ‘far too soon’ as massed German columns appeared on the horizon. With the knowledge that there was nothing behind them, the forces filling the gap would have to convince the enemy that they were far more numerous and well supported than was the case.

In a way, the battle-tested and cunning Kiwi soldiers were perfect for this task. Elements of the force which squared up to Lunderndorff’s offensive had seen all kinds of warfare, from the

beach assaults of the Dardanelles to the muddy hell of trench fighting.

They had survived, and knew many tricks and tactics with which to disrupt, demoralise and harry the foe. Operation Michael ran out of steam and was forced back, at the cost of more a quarter of a million casualties — on each side.

At the thinnest part of the line, where a breakthrough would have been most disastrous, New Zealand troops managed to convince the enemy that their sector was unable to be breached.

But Ludendorff had yet to play his full hand. Operation Michael was a left hook, while his follow up, Operation Mars, was a haymaker punch intended to end the war. Historians have called the events of the March 28 the most significant in the First World War. The three attacks, which came down at Arras, Amiens and Colincamps were repelled by a combination of Kiwi and British forces, and represented the only time in the war when the New Zealand soldiers faced a concentrated ‘set piece’ offensive.

With the three points of Ludendorff’s trident blunted, he went on the defensive, but the time which had been bought by holding the line against operations Michael and Mars was critical. The United States Army had reached France and advanced across the country, ready to engage with fresh

troops and machines.

For the rest of the war the German forces would be outnumbered by the allies — but for a small but significant time, there had been nothing between the supply train, the field hospitals, the ammunition dumps and undefended France, but a small group of soldiers from halfway around the world.

That break in the line was filled, and the high command learned a new level of respect for the Anzac corps.

By November it was all over. One hundred years ago all eyes were on the battlefields of Europe as the final chapters of the bloodiest conflict ever fought unfolded.

Here in New Zealand, those on the ‘home front’ were busy supplying the war effort, both in an official capacity and with care packages laden with local produce. From this region came one delicacy which could last the long journey to France and the trenches — the Kumara. One of the towns, which was a hub of activity at this time was Te Kopuru.

Today the small village is slowly gentrifying, becoming a haven for those seeking a slower pace of life from the big city. However in 1918, this town by the Northern Wairoa river was bustling.

The region’s major hospital was situated here — today this landmark, where

many locals were born, is owned by a trust and is undergoing a slow but steady restoration. There were bakeries, butchers, a pool hall, picture theatre and more.

Today there is only one dairy, but the school is thriving and the little church of Saint Peter, built in 1902, remains an icon of colonial architecture. Now locals are fighting to keep hold of another local touchstone — the Coronation Hall. This large community building has seen events from barn dances to shared dinners, theatre performances to market days over the years, and like in many small Kiwi towns it’s the heart of the community. The issue isn’t the state of the hall — it’s been kept shipshape and solid by a small army of volunteers. Doctor’s visits here weekly make it easier for old folk of the town.

The problem facing the Coronation Hall is one of representation. Without a quorate committee, the hall cannot be properly administered. If that happens,

the hall may slip out of public ownership and potentially, it could be sold or demolished. It’s a fate, which faces many publicly held buildings nationwide, as it becomes more and more difficult to attract members to join committees. But Te Kopuru residents have mobilised to

save their hall more than once. This time, the call is out to attend the committee’s AGM and get involved. Putting up your hand to help save this piece of local history — still very well used today — is a small responsibility which delivers big results, says Coronation Hall advocate, Kelvin Windsor. A summer of near misses by tropical storms has seen our region dodge some heavy weather, but filled our television and computer screens with images of those who were not so fortunate. Disasters are defined by being unexpected and costly, but when the worst happens — even on a smaller and more personal level than a city-leveling cyclone - it’s all about knowing who to turn to for help.

Civil Defence will tell you that a calm and premeditated response to disaster is the best way to get through. And, just as the authorities wisely suggest making up an emergency kit if it becomes necessary to survive without the infrastructure of modern life, so too is it a good idea to acquaint yourself with the people who can swing into action when more prosaic disasters occur.

For example, if your car is in a ditch, has suffered a dent or just won’t start, who do you turn to? It’s all fine and good

It could mean dropping a hook in the brine for a seafood dinner, a cruise through the vast reaches of the Kaipara Harbour, or just an excuse for a jaunt out on the water where the worries of landbound life melt away. But on Easter weekend it doesn’t matter why you usually take to the river — plenty of incentive is set to be provided in the way of prizes and bragging rights, as the annual Northern Wairoa Boating Club regatta gets underway.

There’s something of every class of boat, with a novel form of racing meaning that this event is less about raw horsepower under the deck or over the back and more about cunning navigation. There will be races for the big, stately kauri-built launches, which call this river their ancestral home, as well as races for runabouts and modern designs. There’ll be races just for the ladies, and set-piece time trials in which skippers must calculate the tide, current and their own speed to try and match their earlier time around the course. To make sure it’s all safe and fun, the river will be scouted and cleared of floating hazards before the motors fire up at 10.30am to catch the turn of the tide.

Everyone is welcome — from the owners of tiny ‘fizz boats’ to the captains of substantial vessels.

And of course, there’s plenty of entertainment even for those watching from the shore. The Northern Wairoa Boating Club itself is perfectly situated riverside to catch the action, and you can expect its wide verandas to be

packed with spectators. Even more are sure to turn up for the massive roast dinner planned for after the prize-giving — an absolute steal at only $15 a plate. While it’s spring in the northern hemisphere, you can bet that at least one town in Scandinavia is thinking about our antipodean autumn. The headquarters of Husqvarna is always busy, but this time of year they’re turning out new innovations to help with the sudden growth of lawns and hedges in Europe and America — and the pressing need for winter firewood here!

It’s a constant progression, all the way back since the forges at Husqvarna’s factory stopped making axes and began fashioning chainsaws for the lumber men of the north. The timber trade is still vital to all the Scandinavian nations, and so the idea of a powerful mechanical saw caught on. New Zealand, too, was built on a foundation of forestry, and we were all glad to trade in the two man pit saw for something more efficient.

Now, in Dargaville, once the centre of a massive kauri industry, is the home to a new showcase of Husqvarna’s latest.

Farrand and Mason have been engineers here in town for a long while — not quite since the days of the kauri timber trade, but with a solid reputation

for assisting the modern forestry sector in keeping their machines working and their saws sharp. Now they have dedicated an entire wing of their Normanby Road complex to Husqvarna products, painting the building up in traditional navy blue and white, and featuring whole walls of chainsaws, from the light and battery powered to the massive and forest-ready. There’s also a wide range of ride on mowers and lawn tractors on display, making it easier to take a closer look at some of the world’s best lawn care machinery.
