“The initial idea is to establish a community garden that’s accessible to everyone. While it may not be big enough on its own to feed the entirety of Dargaville — it can serve as an example,” said Kumarani Productions manager Tania Whetū. “We can use it as a space to educate people about what works and how easy it is.” The garden is another example of the Kumarani team moving beyond the space of performance art, for which they have become well known, and assisting with outreach programmes. It will follow the success of other community garden projects in Kaipara towns such as Paparoa and Mangawhai. Planning for the garden will take place at a community kai swap and seedling swap event that celebrates Neighbours Day. Tania says that with Covid-19 concerns currently high and some people being forced to self-isolate, having strong bonds with neighbours is very relevant. “Food resilience is a trend we see all over New Zealand and around the world. Sharing with each other is a big part of this,” says Tania. “If people would like to be involved in the seedling swap or kai exchange, now is the time to make plans, sprout seeds and get ready.” On March 26, between 10am and 2pm, the Kumarani Creative Centre on Onslow Street, opposite Selwyn Park, Dargaville, will be the site for the kai and seed swap, timed to coincide with the autumnal equinox. Right now, melons, squash and other produce are abundant. Tania

 Balancing the needs of the community — Kumarani Productions is volunteering its premises for a new community garden project, planned at a kai and seedling swap day

suggests that this is a good way to stock the pātaka free of charge, curbing costof-living inflation. The Kumarani Facebook page is also running a competition to find the biggest, weirdest, funniest and most artistic vegetables grown around town. It’s free to upload a photo and enter. “Those who want to be involved in the community garden project should definitely come along on the day. “We will be making plans, and we’re grateful for expertise from experienced gardeners, donations of tools, time and material. “Initially, we’re looking at turning the green strips down the sides of

the Kumarani Centre’s front lawn into gardens, but there could be expansions in the future.” With a green light from the generous landlords of the Onslow Street centre, the model garden will soon be up and growing, allowing those who wish to embark on their own food resilience projects to observe, ask questions and take notes. Then there’s the obvious benefit to come; hopeful big harvests to be shared with the community. Those who are keen to get involved, or wish to suggest crops that will benefit the community garden, should contact the Kumarani team on the day or volunteer their assistance by calling 09 439 5152. 

 Protestors opposing the government’s Covid-19 restrictions and mandates gathered in Dargaville last Wednesday to make their case to the public and Kaipara District Council. However, due to the advent of the Omicron Covid variant, the KDC’s scheduled meeting was moved to a remote, online one. A large group of protestors met in Hokianga Road in a peaceful demonstration with chalked messages and placards. The event was only marred by arguments with some town hall and municipal building users, who felt threatened by the activists’ presence due to the actions of unrelated, extremist factions at a parallel protest in Wellington.

Sand mining ‘opposition is in full’  by Andy Bryenton

Advocates for an end to sand mining off the Mangawhai coast have received a boost, as the Kaipara District Council confirms its opposition to a new resource consent. Local protests groups Save Our Sand and Friends of Pakiri have been joined by Greenpeace Aotearoa in opposing a renewed resource consent for operators supplying the building industry. Now the KDC has taken a formal position on the matter. ‘Kaipara District Council opposes the two applications for sand extraction within the Mangawhai-Pakiri embayment currently being publicly notified,’ writes the council in its official  Citizens and environmental protest groups who oppose sand mining off the east coast have been joined in submission to the resource opposition by the Kaipara District Council consent hearing in Auckland. ‘Opposition is in full and pertains to “The resource consent processes are actual or perceived adverse effects on the best tool we have for making our the Mangawhai Sandspit morphology, voice heard on this subject. Opposition to racecourse development  by Andy Bryenton

A group of Awakino Point residents have brought a petition and their concerns to the Kaipara District Council regarding the proposed Dargaville Racecourse Development, which has recently filed papers for a private plan change. Exercising their democratic right, the group of 32 locals have raised issues with the KDC surrounding issues such as possible flooding, traffic congestion and green space provision. The group, called the Awakino Point Ratepayers (APR), made a presentation of their petition to the council last week. “There is no provision for sports fields,” said group spokesperson Grant McLeod. “Potentially, there will also be 400 to 500 children who will have to travel into Dargaville.” Mr McLeod, who says he has been a resident in the vicinity of the proposed housing and light industrial development for the past five years, also put forward concerns from existing residents about the possibility of flooding. “There are some significant concerns around the, dare I say it, ‘Three Waters’, particularly with regard to stormwater.

The hard run-off areas will be increased significantly,” he says. Underlying these issues was the fear from members of the APR group that the developers of the racecourse would not be able to ‘deliver’ on their plans to construct a mixed-use housing, retirement and industrial precinct despite extensive expert planning. Criticism of the tripartite development group’s utilisation of a $900,000 provincial Growth Fund disbursement was also levelled. Councillor David Wills reminded Mr McLeod that a previous spatial plan had already supported a change of use for the racecourse to industrial zoning, rather than agricultural, as the Awakino Point Ratepayers suggest. The APR group were informed that a formal submissions process would be forthcoming, during which they were invited to elaborate on their concerns.

Dargaville Hospital’s new rose garden has been blessed and opened last week, with a delegation of community volunteers, health professionals and local citizens witnessing the ribbon cutting at dawn. The rose gardens were set to be revitalised after falling into disrepair, but the simple replanting took a turn for a complete refurbishment as volunteers flocked to the cause. Roading budget extension approved  by Andy Bryenton

Mayor’s Message Kia ora, Future-focused energies for the finish of February are helping set up Kaipara District Council for a busy time ahead. In a long-term water resilience decision for Dargaville and Baylys Beach, beset for years by summer water restrictions, a decision has been made by the Council to prepare a detailed business case for the expansion and redevelopment of the Waiatua Dam on Opunake Road. It is envisaged there could be 337,000m³ water stored, sufficient for 3 months supply of stored water if there’s no rain. The business case is expected to be completed towards the end of this year. Before then, other things to watch for include: • State Highway Speed Review to reduce the state highway speeds between Auckland and Cape Reinga to 80km/h is not yet released for public consultation by Waka Kotahi NZTA. • Three Waters Reforms legislation which was originally due to be introduced in December 2021 is now indicated as coming along the pipes in May 2022. Expect some adjustments ahead to the original proposals. • As part of encouraging Councils to participate with alacrity in the Three Waters Reforms, late last year Government offered to grant Kaipara District Council $16m for capital development projects in Kaipara. We await guidelines around rules for using that grant. • Draft Fees and Charges for Council’s next financial year from 1 July 2022 have been agreed and will go out to consultation soon before being finalised. Broadly, KDC’s fees and charges have 3.3% inflation added in line with Consumer Price Index. • Council awaits advice and instruction about the Local Government Cost Index

(LGCI), the inflation component in calculations of Council rates (not fees and charges). Councils don’t use CPI to benchmark cost increases of services and asset maintenance but use LGCI. • Pouto Road Phase One sealing project has now been confirmed for completion with top-up funds of $487,000 coming from retained earnings from last year’s financial surplus, rather than taking unsealed road maintenance for 10km worth of other roads or stopping the project now and risking having to pay back some of the $5m grant. • Council has agreed a modernised Waste Minimisation Strategy including a shift away from rubbish bags to wheelie bins. This will ultimately be a two-phase strategy, but for now the first phase will occur between now and 2024. Modernising Council’s approach to waste was part of the LTP consultation last year, where people were supportive of this direction. Immediately on us, and in a final sobering note, Kaipara’s positive Covid cases in Dargaville at present are nearly half of all cases in Northland. This is a worry especially when Kaipara vaccination rates would indicate people here are more vulnerable to serious illness and hospitalisation than in other districts. I wish everyone well for the weeks ahead. Ngaˉ mihi, Mayor Jake Dr Jason Smith, Mayor of Kaipara District

www.kaipara.govt.nz

New Zealand operates on a marginal tax system, so once you pass a certain income bracket, you then pay more on the next amount you earn. For instance, if you are earning $48,000 with a tax rate of 17.5% per annum and your earnings increase to $52,000 per annum, you will pay a different rate on the extra $4,000. It will be taxed at 30%, an increase of 12.5% on the 17.5% you are paying on the $48,000. A middle-income earner working a 40-hour week, on $23–$33 an hour, is taxed at 30%. Once you pass that $33 an hour, you are then on a 33% tax rate. The next increase is at $180,000-plus, which is $86.54 an hour, and that is taxed at 39%. So for a difference of $110,000 per annum the higher incomes are only paying 9% more taxes than a middleincome earner. That is a very simplistic take on our tax system, as I’m not an accountant. Still, I certainly think there are things to improve our system and make it fairer for the lower to middle-income earners. Let us take home more money, then there will be more money circulating, homelessness and child poverty won’t go away, but maybe this will help some. I wish this was what lay ahead. 

Increased inflation? Oh yippee skippy, the cost of living is on the rise! Groceries, fuel and everything that we all need go up in price, and what does some rocket scientist think would be a good idea? An increase to the minimum wage, allegedly to help with this. How does this self-proclaimed ‘genius’ think that this will help? Yes, it will put more money on your wage slip, but how does the business you work for cover this increase? By increasing the prices of the goods they sell. The only one that benefits from a minimum wage increase is the government because they get more taxes from you and more GST from businesses, with increased prices at the till. I wish this was something that lay ahead. The removal of GST from all fruit, veggies, meat, eggs, bread, and dairy products, Kiwi made produce, hygiene products like sanitary items and oral health products and fuel. Increase GST on all cigarettes, alcohol and sugary soft drinks, as well as luxury items, especially imported ones. Do this, and you will get a lot more food in your trolley, and your wages will go further. Look at how the income tax rates work. Will that change ever lie ahead?

The ACT party’s rural representative Mark Cameron addressed a Grey Power meeting in Dargaville last week, answering tough questions from the gallery.

Details were being planned for a swift roll-out of the Rapid Antigen Tests or RATs across Kaipara, where there were 47 cases of Omicron notified at the beginning of this week while running past 1,000 cases in Northland.

Mr Cameron, a dairy farmer from Ruawai who has risen to prominence in national-level politics, invited questions from the crowd who came to the town’s Methodist Church to hear him. Dargaville 150 Years Young

Dargaville turns 150  by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville has a long and interesting past, which goes back to an agreement struck 150 years ago by merchant Joseph Dargaville to purchase the parcel of land where the Kaihu and Northern Wairoa rivers met. Inspired by the success of fellow trader Sir John Logan Campbell, who had established a store at Mangawhare, Dargaville journeyed upriver in the latter part of 1871 to lay plans for a town that would bear his name. It’s still the only town in New Zealand named after its founder. A reflection, perhaps, of Dargaville’s character and sense of self-promotion. Some find it odd that Dargaville possessed a surname that already sounded like the name of a town. His ancestors were French religious dissidents from the town of Argeville, hence d’Argeville was their given name when they fled to Ireland, later becoming embroiled in the wars between William of Orange and King James Stuart. Joseph’s vision was informed by his formative years bringing commerce and a degree of civilisation to the Australian and New Zealand goldfields, where he’d represented banking interests. In Kaipara, he saw the potential for a different kind of gold, the kauri forests, answering the hunger

for good timber that came with the age of sail, colonialism and wooden construction. Dargaville was to be a planned town. A place where the perceived lawlessness and wild behaviour of other ‘frontier’ towns in the north were to be banished by a combination of religious observance and diligent industry. This ideal did not stop Dargaville, who controlled the leasehold on much of the town for many years after its establishment, from permitting and even encouraging the establishment of taverns. As a businessman, he was acutely aware of the commercial possibilities of thirsty bushmen, sailors and labourers. In fact, the order of construction for early Dargaville reflected the priorities of its founder; first, wharves and sheds for trade, then two hotels, then his own family home, now part of Norfolk Court Rest Home and Hospital. While the agreement between local iwi and Joseph Dargaville was the catalyst, it took many years of labour and progress by a host of other characters to make

The rebel schoolmaster’s legacy  by Andy Bryenton

The newspaper you are holding now might not have even existed in its current form if it wasn’t for Kaipara media pioneer John Stallworthy and his contemporary, WA Ellis. Ellis established the Northern Wairoa Gazette in 1883, feeding a hunger for news and information in the settlements around Kaipara Harbour. The Kopuru Bell was also founded around the same time, and both single-sheet newspapers were avidly received. John Stallworthy was the schoolmaster at Aratapu. A year after these two early news sheets began to circulate, he reasoned that he could join the market too. He hand wrote and cyclostyled 80 copies for each edition of his Aratapu Gazette, serving as editor, journalist and printer. This experience led him to purchase the Kopuru Bell in 1889, expanding its scope, securing a true printing press, and changing its name to the Wairoa Bell. The Board of Education was less than impressed. They may not have agreed with what they saw as meddling in local politics via editorial pieces, and they certainly considered a schoolmaster’s job to be full-time. Stallworthy was summarily fired from his teaching position, but he remained unrepentant and doubled down on his news reporting career. By 1896 Stallworthy had grown his business to dominate the media trade in Kaipara, merging with the Northern Advertiser and going bi-weekly. Papers went out via boat to other towns around the

It would continue as a rival during the editorship of famous writer Jane Mander, who took over in 1907, one of the first women in the role of editor and a pioneer of gender equality in the industry. of the Bell in 1908, the North Auckland Times offered the use of their printing press and saved the next edition. After his death in 1923, Stallworthy’s son Arthur agreed to a merger with the North Auckland Times, thus ending the Wairoa Bell’s long and interesting print run. The legacy of locallyowned print media, however, lives on in the paper you hold in your hands right now.

Founded as a mercantile hub even before Joseph Dargaville gave it his name, the settlement on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River has always needed reliable financial services.

The changing face of Dargaville was illustrated by the surge of dairy farming at the opening of the twentieth century, rising as the kauri trade fell.

By the time the kauri trade was waning and the rise of farming had begun, this need was even greater. Warm toes and better homes The engines of industry  by Andy Bryenton

 by Andy Bryenton

In the early days of Dargaville, the name Munn was associated with the post office, though a business inspiration was soon to make a lasting difference.

Feats of engineering were needed to bring prosperity to Dargaville, and as time went by and the nature of those jobs changed, the need for technical know-how remained.

Henr y Munn was the son of Dargaville’s postmaster. His father administered the mail from what was perhaps the town’s most prominent building, the old post office on the corner of Hokianga Road and Normanby Street, in a time when a postman wore a uniform like an army officer and written letters were the main form of communication. Henry didn’t want to  The Munn’s name has been associated with furniture and carpet since 1936 follow in the footsteps of his father, however, and displayed an across the road from the post office. After all, electricity was here, but soon both boasted similar foot traffic. The Munn’s name has been associated and a new invention called the vacuum cleaner meant that soft furnishings were with furniture and carpet ever since, easier than ever to maintain for those coming down through three generations. The oldest surviving name in Engineering in Dargaville today is Farrand and Mason, established in 1954. Among their tools and machinery are some that date from this founding, having been bought from a previous engineer, Appletons. Along with Mawson Engineering, Farrand and Mason is one of the most well-remembered names of the mid-1900s, repairing the machines that made Dargaville and its surrounds prosper. It often meant travelling out to isolated farms where, in the days before electricity reached the rural sector, milking plants were fired up with diesel and stationary pumps, and motors performed many of the jobs now associated with the electrical trade. It also meant servicing the dragline excavators that worked to dig drainage ditches and create arable farmland. These monster machines used winches, chains and vast toothed buckets for ripping trenches in the soil. Farrand and Mason’s yard and workshop contain a mixture of machinery from the very new and modern through to the old and

Amazingly, this crane was transplanted from an even older REO truck rig onto a second world war era Mack truck base and is still as strong as ever.

The bargain made at Tunatahi  by Andy Bryenton

One hundred and fifty years ago, Joseph Dargaville came north to purchase the land at Tunatahi; among delegates on the other side of that historic negotiation was a man who embodied the attitudes of changing times. Parore Te Āwha, the Māori leader who helped negotiate the sale of the Tunatahi block to Joseph Dargaville 150 years ago, was born in Mangakāhia in the 1790s. He rose to prominence during the tumultuous years of the mid-1800s when the introduction of muskets and the inroads of colonialism changed the geopolitical landscape. Parore spent his young years at Kaihū and later at Kaikohe, a move that was made when his family relocated to avoid warfare. A similar move happened again when Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Maru taua (parties of warriors) clashed in the 1820s. Parore took up residence in the Waipoua Valley and would later settle at Te Kōpuru for a time when the renowned warrior chief Hongi Hika threatened an invasion from the

north. Parore was known as a negotiator and diplomat rather than a fighter who was quick to anger. This attitude informed his dealings with the Europeans who began to arrive in Kaipara around the 1830s. “He was in the prime of life, possessing a countenance remarkably pleasing; his stature was tall and commanding, and, although not outwardly distinguished from his companions by any peculiarities of dress, yet he had an air at once noble and dignified, from the habitual exercise of authority,” said Samuel Polack. He met with Parore during his journeys through the west Kaipara in the 1830s. Even before the signing of Te Tiriti at Waitangi, Parore embraced both the religion and farming practices of the Pākehā. He was visited at Kaihū in 1838

Dargaville 150 years young

by the missionary William Wade, who recorded both a chapel and a wheat field at Parore’s settlement. Later a missionary cottage, used by the Wesleyan James Buller, was added. In 1837 he and his brother-in-law, Te Tirirau, were signatories to the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand. After the 1872 sale of the Tunatahi block to Joseph Dargaville, Parore undertook alongside Te Roroa and Ngāti Whātua; he remained active in politics. In 1882 he funded the mission led by Hirini Taiwhanga to present a Ngāpuhi petition to Queen Victoria. It was the first major Māori appeal to England based on the Treaty of Waitangi. The petition requested that a royal commission be appointed to investigate laws contravening the Treaty, and that authority be given for the establishment of a Māori parliament.

 Joseph Dargaville is credited with founding the town that bears his name, but the progressive and diplomatic attitude of Parore Te Āwha was what made the settler’s plans possible

Croatian and Dalmatian settlers  by Amy Fifita

When Kaipara began flourishing in the mid-1800s, Croatia and Dalmatia were under Austro-Hungarian rule; many would sail to the Kauri Coast for a better chance. With Austria involved in multiple wars during the 1800s, men were being conscripted by the Austrian military within the borders they ruled, including Croatia and Dalmatia. Being dragged into a war, they did not want to fight, led them to evaluate their options. New Zealand had started to kick off as a new frontier offering much work and opportunity. On April 30 1857, SMS Novara departed Trieste on a two-year voyage. Croatian and Dalmatian emigrants would board this boat in search of a better future. The ship would land in New Zealand on December 21 1858, dropping off immigrants that would become workers in the gumfields and mills. After this time, many emigrated from Dalmatia and Croatia to New Zealand. Some would choose to settle here, while others would go back home. The Kauri Coast was a place to recompense themselves. There were jobs and the promise of a life they wanted for themselves and their families. Current times show the influence of this culture in New Zealand and the legacy its people have continued through the generations. The Croatians knew how to create societies and were the first European

country to establish a state in 925 AD. However, the lands of Croatia and Dalmatia were always fought for — even in 11 BC when the Romans ruled their land. The culture that helped mould communities, in Kaipara and the Far North, was not seen as the pioneers we call them today. They were hard workers. However, they found it difficult to fit in with other settlers of the time. Many did not speak English, and their culture differed from those on the outside looking in. They found acceptance and compatibility from Māori. Each culture recognised and acted similarly in values regarding the respect for land and sea — both held deep importance for family. Some ventured north to places like Herekino to start vineyards, while others would settle further south. The kauri rush had begun to cease, and New Zealand still offered many Croatian and Dalmatian immigrants a place of hope and prosperity. Kaipara land was fertile, and many settled as farmers or reverted to being fishermen, sailors or winemakers. These were occupations that many had come from in their homelands. The origins of many New Zealand wineries come from the influx of Dalmatian and Croatian immigrants from this time.

The great kauri forests and trade  by Amy Fifita

Imagine the vast tracts of kauri forest that once covered the Kaipara, the workers, the mud of the gumfields and the bustle of a burgeoning population. New Zealand as a country is young. One hundred and fifty years ago, in Dargaville, the land people walk, live and drive upon was in its early stages as a town. Once kauri forests encompassed the land in Kaipara, it was the start of what we see now. Before colonisation, Māori would use kauri for building and carving. They would use the gum to chew on, help light fires and use the soot from burning it for tā moko. In 1772, French explorer, Marion du Fresne, is noted to have discovered kauri for the European world. Once used only by mana whenua, settlers came to use trunks for masts and eventually timber. The plentiful forests would become sparse as those who desired to profit from its exploitation. The timber lacked knots and was strong and easy to build with. Kauri timber was coveted and admired for its attractive grain. There was a high demand, and the industry

provided. To sustain it, trees needed to be felled, transported, milled and shipped. The tree was not just wanted for its building qualities. The gum from kauri was utilised for paint, varnish, marine glue and used to start fires. Gum was bled from living trees, which often caused death. The practice was banned by the government in 1905. Initially, in 1769, James Cook thought the gum came from mangroves. However, in 1819, missionary Samuel Marden discovered it was from the kauri tree. During the mid to late-1800s international workers sailed to Kaipara shores to earn a living. Gumdiggers, carpenters, mill workers, sailors and many other professions were keen for work and the money it brought. It provided a stable wage from a booming industry. Ships would sail down the Northern Wairoa River to southern ports filled with timber and logs. Our closest and biggest market was across the Tasman Sea to

Wealthpoint

 Gumdiggers work at moving gum they had collected

Australia — there, the product would be used to build houses. Production and exporting of kauri hit their peak year in 1907 before it dwindled. The previous popularity had its effect on the kauri population that led to policies controlling land clearance and

development. The great trade was coming to a halt. The result of these factors would lead to the Waipoua Forest becoming protected in 1952. The kauri tree was reclassified as a threatened species by the government in 2018.

Treasures from the past  by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville Museum, or Te Whare Taonga Tunatahi, is the central storehouse of historical artefacts and images for Dargaville; its varied collections display the ages and stages of local history. With more than 1,800 square metres of space packed with local heritage and staffed by a largely voluntary team, this is the destination to visit for those seeking to delve into the early days of west Kaipara. The museum has a strong maritime component, as befits an area that has always been a link to the sea for the people dwelling there. Perhaps the most important artefact in the pre-European Māori historical collection is a handcrafted waka, of the kind used for everyday fishing and transport. While it lacks the ornate carvings of the mighty waka used in times of war, this 16-metre vessel shows the marks of a master craftsperson, who created it with stone tools, fire and patience. Maritime relics from the time of the tall ships also feature strongly. The history of the Ripiro Coast, with its many woodenhulled shipwrecks, is laid out alongside pieces gleaned from the sands. The dangers of daring the Kaipara Harbour bar and the often stormy west coast were balanced against the riches to be had in kauri timber and gum and then in terms of settlement and trade. Kauri gum and kauri logging were vital to the foundation of Dargaville. The museum presents a vivid picture of the bushman and gumdigger’s life, including one of the only historic buildings in New Zealand, which is situated indoors; an authentic gumdigger’s dwelling. Examples of the amber treasure sit alongside the tools and machines used to find and wash

it and the stories of those hardy people who came to the Kaipara region to seek their fortune beneath the soil. Many of the artefacts in this collection are donated by the descendants of the original settlers. As we celebrate 150 years since the founding of Dargaville, the pioneer’s hall is also a spot of interest. This area is divided into set-piece displays of shops, living rooms, doctor’s offices and more, displaying items from the late 1800s and early 1900s, all of which were genuinely used by local people. When it comes to velocity, gentlemen and ladies of the present age might well assume that the steam locomotive or Henri Giffard’s steam-powered airship are the very epitome of celerity. However, the prize for rivalling winged Mercury himself goes not to a contrivance of the railroad or the air. Sovereign among all modes of vehicular transportation is the great clipper ships that span the wide oceans in service of trade and thus enrich the New Zealand colonies. ‘Aha!,’ some waggish reader may exclaim. ‘Not so, for even the workaday engines of the newly established Trans-Pacific Railroad in President Ulysses S Grant’s United States can achieve 48 miles an hour, sufficiently stoked.’ Therein lies the supremacy of the tall ship. However, while the aforementioned steam engine can indeed reach a handsome clip on level ground, it must stop to load on coal and water. While ships such as the mighty Cutty Sark can span oceans driven by naught but the very wind itself. Markedly, these fine vessels may also transport a large tonnage of precious cargo, and, we note, there is not yet a locomotive built that may perambulate on water. Clipper ships, with their narrow hulls and 39,000 square feet of sail, manage to deploy 3,000 horsepower without having to use cargo space for coal. Some say that the steamship will one day banish these stately vessels from the world’s trade routes, but most scoff at such assertions. Who could deny the grace and speed of such a ship?

 Clippers rule the waves — these modern vessels are the epitome of grace and speed in the realm of good King Neptune

With a crew of 28 skilled sailors a clipper can make the run from our neighbours in Australia to Mother England in only 72 days, which compares favourably with the 120 days it once took a sailing vessel to make the trip to the Antipodes. The great clipper ships of our presentday were pioneered by shipwrights from the United States. Vessels such as the Rainbow and the Flying Cloud challenged, for a while, the supremacy of Britannia on the waves, plying the tea-route from California to the Orient.

However, the natural order was restored, and the honour of Queen Victoria vindicated when vessels such as the Cutty Sark, the Sovereign of the Seas and the City of Adelaide were crafted by good British nautical engineers. With bold frontiersmen in the New Zealand colonies discovering a wealth of kauri wood in the Kaipara region, and the establishment of a planned town there by the mercantile adventurer JM Dargaville, the means to produce fine ships like this will be at the disposal of the empire for decades to come! 

Ford’s 101 years of motoring  by Andy Bryenton

With 90,000 vehicles sold by the end of its long production run in 1927, and a reputation for tackling muddy, badly maintained roads, it’s likely that the first car most early Dargaville residents ever saw was a Ford Model T. Born in 1908, the same year Dargaville formed its first borough council, the T became ubiquitous in early New Zealand. Joseph Dargaville passed away just two years before the first automobiles came to the colonies, but in the town bearing his name, the uptake of Ford’s Tin Lizzie was both enthusiastic and rapid. In those very early times, the only way to secure a Ford was via the Colonial Motor Company, which established a Ford import business in central Wellington. All that changed in 1921, when Mr HT Smith bought the commission to sell Ford cars in Dargaville. In the same year, the Colonial Motor Company switched from importing Henry Ford’s cars to assembling them in New Zealand, driving down the price and increasing supply. Smith established his enterprise on the main street, partnering up with Mr GW Bradley and staked a claim to the land opposite the post office in Normanby Street. Through changes of vehicles on offer from Ford and some changes of ownership, Smith’s Garage became a local landmark. The next big change came in 1966 when the Loudon family

bought the business. They changed the name to Dargaville Motors and established a new, bigger and more modern showroom just down the road, moving in for 1970. In those early days, cars cost less; however, wages were also much lower. A Ford Tudor sedan would set the aspiring motorist back $245 when it was new off the production line. By 1971, a Mark One Ford Escort cost $2,611. Today, these machines are considered classics of their era, and they command prices in line not only with inflation but also with their iconic status. Today’s version of Dargaville Motors came into existence in 1990. It has endured to become the only new vehicle dealership in town, under the stewardship of  Fords and numerous other makes and models receive some care and attention at Smith’s Garage, Dargaville’s first home of Ford Lindsay West and his team. Like the Smith’s Garage crew before them, they Ford has been a big name in Dargaville vehicle of yesteryear, the old Model T. don’t just sell new Fords but also maintain for 101 years. While technology has It bodes well for current Ford owners a busy workshop sourcing parts, servicing changed, there’s a link back from that there’s still an active and roadgoing a large fleet of vehicles and performing today’s most popular vehicle, the Model T Club of New Zealand after all upgrades and repairs.
