Suspicious fire at Glinks Gully

On Sunday, February 21 it is believed a fire was purposely lit at the old Glinks Gully rubbish dump. It spread up the sandstone hills destroying nearly five hectares of heather, scrub and vegetation and put the Glinks Gully campsite and the community in danger.

“We received the call out at 11.30pm and we believe it was a suspicious fire lit by an arsonist.

“There have been a few recently in the area. The fire put a lot of people in danger,” said Dargaville Volunteer Fire Chief Jeffrey Palmer.

The police are investigating each of these events.

“Whoever is lighting these fires needs to realise they are wasting valuable resources. Not only is it dangerous but they are taking all the resources out of our towns and other places.

“If there happens to be a house fire or accident threatening other people’s lives these people could be responsible for someone dying because we can’t get to them in time.

“The nearest truck would be Ruawai or Whangarei and the person needing help could die as a consequence of time.”

Mr Palmer said once the fire was contained with the help of helicopters

the brigade left the scene at 3.30am.

“There are still people out there from the Forest Protection Service. They are still checking for hot spots.

“It isn’t just a couple of hours to put it out, it can take weeks. It takes men and women away from their jobs and their families and there is a huge bill for the helicopters.”

With the fire ban recently lifted Mr Palmer encourages people to be careful when lighting fires.

“If a fire gets out of control, the ‘firelighter’ pays the amount that it costs to put the fire out. This could be in the million dollar figure, especially when forests and houses or buildings are involved.

“It is still very dry here and controlled burn-offs can get out of control. Ensure you have things under control at all times.”

Anyone with information regarding these recent suspicious fires are encouraged to call 0800 555 111. 

“We are looking forward to working with local groups to facilitate holding annual events in town.

“We would like to encourage groups who do not have an annual event to consider hosting one with the view of encouraging more people to the area.”

The recent Peter Kenyon seminars have initially identified two potential projects which the board will assist in facilitating in conjunction with the Dargaville Business Forum and the Kauri Coast Promotion Society.

“We are researching the possibility of re-establishing the annual Kumara Festival as well as a historic interpretation of Dargaville presentation,” said Lorraine.

The DCDB are also now responsible for managing the 34 Kaipara District Council Community Housing Units and property manager Gloria Milich says the change over is going well with a smooth transition.

“We are building relationships with the tenants and starting to discuss the workings of the units. At present we are ensuring their homes are tidy and comfortable and seeing if there are

any needs the tenants have regarding their houses.

“Recently we cleared a big area at the Ruawai properties and refreshed the grounds in general giving them a nice new start to the year and making the environment nicer.

“We have just installed new smoke alarms in the units in Dargaville thanks to the help of the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade. They came and checked them all for us, changed batteries and installed new alarms where needed.

This is an important safety measure for any tenant and having the Fire Brigade do the safety checks was very reassuring for them.

We want to ensure they feel secure and are happy and comfortable in their homes. We are now organising to check the alarms in Ruawai.

“All the tenants have been brilliant to work with and they have certainly made my job a lot easier. I enjoy working alongside them.

Principal’s guilty plea Dargaville High School principal David Kenneth Bargh has pleaded guilty in the Whangarei District Court to three counts of a charge known as ‘lurking-loitering-peepingpeering near to a dwelling’ and being unlawfully in an enclosed yard.

He has been remanded on bail to re-appear for sentencing on April 27.

The Education Council says the guilty plea is being referred to the council’s disciplinary tribunal and in the meantime it is seeking his voluntary suspension from teaching,

which could be enforced if need be.

The tribunal can also strike Bargh off the teachers’ register.

School board of trustees chairwoman Kathryn de Bruin said it is business-as-usual at the school, with the focus on students’ education.

From Arapohue to Africa  by Ayla Miller

A life long fascination with Africa lead internationally recognised wildlife photographer Robyn Preston to start her own safari venture, which sees her spend around half a year in Africa and the other half residing at Baylys Beach.

Robyn grew up in Arapohue and lived for 28 years on a Ruawai farm whilst raising her four children. She had never left the country until 2007 when her daughter urged her to travel.

After a trip to Europe and Scandinavia she gained the confidence to travel to Africa in 2009 on her own. She now spends six to seven months in Africa each year and has started her own safari company, Robyn E. Preston Kenya Safaris.

“I’d always been interested in Africa, and when my aunt gave me a book called ‘Serengeti shall not die’ when I was 10, I remember thinking — how am I supposed to read that being so young.”

Before she caught a taste for travelling she says she had a very sheltered life.

“I had lived in this area all my life and the thought of going on that first plane was horrendous.”

Robyn has travelled to 11 African countries and nine of them twice. Kenya has been her favourite from the very first trip and she now rents a cottage there.

She says she doesn’t know what it is about Africa that is so appealing to her.

“There’s just something about getting back to nature and keeping things simple. I love the lifestyle and being out with the animals.

“I’m fully booked this year with back to back safaris. I have my own driver that I met in 2012 when I was there travelling.

We work together now in partnership.

“I do custom made itineraries based around what people want to see. I’m extending to Tanzania and next year I’m taking someone into Ethiopia.”

Over the years she has come to know the locals very well and is a regular at many camps.

“It is just liking visiting friends and family,” she says.

In a random act of kindness, Dargaville Playcentre received a generous food donation from Countdown to restock their cupboards after they were broken into last week.

Rugby teams in the Northern Wairoa and all over Northland are in desperate need for new referees.

Mother of two, Samii Gilligan, says the news of the break in was ‘gut wrenching’.

“They took items from the first aid kit and a drill set and tool box.”

The burglars smashed a window in the wash area and exited out the front door taking dinner plates, a popcorn maker and most of the contents of the centre’s food cupboards and fridge.

Parents spent the following day doing a stock take and cleaning up broken glass which was spread through the centre.

“They also tried to steal our printer but one of the children found it under a bush just outside the fence.

“It was gut wrenching that someone would come into a place for children.

One of the kids asked if the burglars were going to come to her house. She found it quite unsettling.”

Dargaville store manager Tom Headifen said the donation was suggested by his 2IC Diane Pulham.

“We heard what happened and thought we should do something about it. It’s nothing for us to donate a few boxes and makes a big difference,” he said.

Ms Gilligan says she and the other parents were extremely grateful for the donated food as the stolen food was purchased out of their own money for the children’s morning tea.

Any suspicious activity that could relate to the break in should be reported to the Dargaville Police Station. 

Nor thland Rugby Referees Association vice president Brian Armstrong says the Northern Wairoa area has only one active referee, himself, for 14 games per fortnight.

Ideally there would be six more for this area.

“We have had the same group of referees for about the last 20 years and they aren’t getting any younger,” says Brian. “We just aren’t getting the next generation stepping in.”

New teacher fosters passion

From selling houses in Auckland, to teaching physics at Otamatea High School, Graeme Skipper says the move to the Kaipara has been an easy transition.

The award winning Kauri Museum in Matakohe has embarked on a new digital age. Visitors are now able to enjoy the museum digitally as they explore the galleries.

The new physics teacher has a degree in engineering and plenty of experience with young people, and hopes to foster a passion for physics in his students by allowing them to do plenty of hands on experiments.

Mr Skipper joined Otamatea High School last year in term three for a twomonth Long Term Relief position and enjoyed it so much he applied for a permanent role.

“The move has been easy. There was a meet the teachers night recently and the parents are great and obviously care a lot about their children.”

As well as teaching he is involved with the Big Buddy mentoring programme in Auckland. This programme is designed to match fatherless boys with reliable male role models.

He currently teaches a year 9, 10, 12 and 13 class as well as supervising a vertical form class in the morning.

“I’ve got a classroom with a lot of stuff in it. There is always something for the kids to play with if they are bored and I try to make science available for them. It’s hard to get kids inspired and I enjoy it when you can see the lights turn

“Many museums around the world banned selfie sticks in 2015, but the Kauri Museum has declared itself a selfie friendly zone. It has always been a hands on experience,” says chief executive Lisa Tolich.

“Now interaction can be digital too.

We want our visitors to climb in our bathtub, try on our hats and get the sweet smell of kauri gum on their hands and then post it on Facebook.”

This innovative digital experience also includes a state of the art audio tour produced entirely with local talent.

‘The tour encourages new ways of experiencing the museum alongside extra multimedia snippets, such as a behind the scenes video tour, pioneering cooking demonstrations and a hidden art trail. We have called it ‘Tall tales and short stories’, this is our history, told in a local voice,” says Ms Tolich.

Undertaken over the last six months, the project has been a labour of love for the local community.

Kae Bond, the daughter of the Kauri Museum founder Mervyn Sterling, dons a pioneer dress to recount the museum’s early days over a cup of tea while her brother, Darcy Sterling rolls up his sleeves with the museum’s engine boys to start up the old machines in rarely seen footage.

“Funny and frightening stories are retold by descendants from the founding families of the area and pioneering times are re-enacted by volunteers.

“We encourages future visitors to pack their selfie stick, get their duck face ready and save a tree in the process. “And tweet about it with #KauriMuseum.”

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe is open daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Admission is $25 adults, $20 seniors and students, $8 children, with under five year olds and residents of the old Otamatea District free of charge. 

Whether just to say they did it or as an opportunity to fundraise, approximately 300 cyclists are taking the 3,000-kilometre challenge of the Tour Aotearoa cycling event from Cape Reinga to Bluff.

Pouto campground with Anne and Brian Malam was the place to stop overnight if they missed the last ferry crossing to Helensville.

“There have been all age groups, from New Zealand and overseas, including people from Australia, America and Germany. It has been great,” said Brian.

“One guy left Kaitaia in the morning and got to us at 6pm that night. That’s serious riding. Others are taking a couple of days to get here. There is no time frame, they just have to be in Bluff within 30 days of leaving Cape Reinga.

Brian says the cyclists were really impressed with Northland.

“When they got to Pouto it was the icing on the cake. The weather has been perfect and the water like glass. The Kaipara really turned it on for them.”

This length-of-New-Zealand brevet is an unforgettable ride. It is not a race and each team has a spot tracker which pinpoints their destination.

The participants do it under their own steam, carrying their belongings as they follow the organised route, whilst taking photos at 30 planned spots along the way as evidence of adhering to the designated route.

Some groups are taking the opportunity to raise funds for a diverse variety of charities and causes along the way including Kidscan, education projects in Nepal, and one participant is fundraising for trees — one tree for each kilometre of the journey. 

Pauline Hilliam-Olsen has been named Aoroa Rural Women’s Representative on the Kaipara Community Health Trust Board replacing Kath Gillespie.

“The position was originally created by the Save the Hospital committee to ensure Rural Women had a voice in the community,” said CEO Kaipara Community Health Trust Deb Evans.

Pauline lives with her husband, Bevan Olsen, in Aratapu on a dairy farm. She was born in Te Kopuru hospital and educated locally at Selwyn Park School, Dargaville Intermediate and High School.

“My first job was as a clothing machinist for Calman’s Manufacturing,” said Pauline.

“I commenced a correspondence course to be a nanny when I was 20 years old. Once qualified I travelled overseas for 13 years working in exciting countries like Russia, France, United States and the United Kingdom.

“I returned to Dargaville in 2002 and joined my parents in their farm supply business. They sold the business in 2008 and I stayed with the new business owners until 2013.

“I have since become more active in our community following my hobbies and personal interest groups and I also help on my parent’s beef and sheep farm.”

Pauline is an active member of Aoroa Rural Women, Dairy Women’s Network, Aoroa Garden Circle, Northern Wairoa Genealogy Society, the RSA — Women’s section, Northern Wairoa

Country Women’s Club, Northern Wairoa Scottish Society and the Northern Wairoa Anglican Parish, and she is also a volunteer at the Dargaville Museum.

“The Kaipara Community Health Trust mission statement is to ensure there are health services available locally for people in our community to access.

“I accepted to be part of the Kaipara Community Health Trust as a Representative for Aoroa Rural Women of New Zealand because as a local Kaipara person I wanted to be part of an organisation that is vital to our community and helps the people of the Kaipara, by ensuring our hospital and health services continue to be open and local.” 

Celebrating 51 years of flying Members of the Otamatea Aero Club have been flying the Kaipara skies and beyond for 51 years and they are celebrating at their Ruawai Airfield on State Highway 12, Naumai on Saturday, March 5, starting at 9am.

“We have had a successful past 50 years and we are looking forward to the next 50,” said club patron Peter King.

“Club pilots have enjoyed competition flying since the club started and the clubhouse has a number of certificates and photos on the wall. There is a lot of history for people to see. We also have an instructor available for lessons by arrangement for those who are interested in trying their hands at flying.”

There will be tea, coffee and light refreshments available for purchase all day and lunch is $10 per head from 12–1pm with a cake cutting ceremony at 2pm. There will be no landing fees

and there is ample parking for aircraft and vehicles on site.

The Otamatea Aero Club also invite expressions of interest from those wanting to house their aircraft.

“We are 22 kilometres from Dargaville and have a 700 metre runway with good road access, a clear flight path free from town and no complex bureaucracy.

“We would love to see more people utilising the club. We have a lot of land available and welcome new members to put their hangers up.”

To administer Paper4Trees waste minimisation and recycling project at 22 Kaipara Schools. Project rewards schools for recycling by giving them native trees to plant. The programme provides recycling bins for the schools to collect materials to be recycled, but it is up to the school to arrange for the recycling of what is collected.

This service could be considered to be consistent with the purpose of Local Government as it supports recycling.

Transfield has quoted $51,879.00 to complete this work and it is hoped to undertake this in late 2016 if funding is secured (other funding external funding has been applied for).

To purchase a specialist bowling‑green mower to use maintain the bowling green.

Community Connexions Arty Farties

$5,345.00

To purchase a lawnmower and weed‑eater ‑ $4,845.00, and partial funding towards a composting toilet of $600.00 (the rest of the funding for the toilet has been secured).

Recreation facilities are consistent with the purpose of Local Government.

Volunteers are involved in the operation of the Bowling Club.

Could possibly be considered a recreational facility and a form of community infrastructure (Arty Farties offers community gardens and a community space, facilities workshops for the community, operates a food bank) so could be considered consistent with the purpose of local government, though it is a grey area.

Arty Farties is operated by volunteers.

Dargaville placemaking This is where community and council get together to pool ideas about what needs to be done around Dargaville to make it the place you want it to be. After a week’s worth of planning last year, we’ve now got a big list of ideas formed into an action plan.

A community advisory panel is helping us prioritise the ideas, and this month, we’re going to be asking the Dargaville community to provide us with feedback. It will also give everyone an overview of what needs to be done about town. The council will do some projects, the community will do others, and some will be in partnership. So watch out for the concept plan in the next couple of weeks.

Te Kopuru Domain In 2014, we got together with Te Kopuru residents, and it was decided the Domain could be used in much better ways. Since then, we’ve been meeting residents regularly about possibilities. One resident even paid to have a concept plan drawn up using all the ideas, for instance, a BMX track, playground, picnic tables, obstacle course and plantings. Now we’re working out the priorities and seeing what the Council can do, what the community can do, and what we can do together.

It’s a leap year

Capturing the Northern Wairoa

Only leap year babies know what it is like to have a leap year birthday every four years on February 29, and Judy Callagher of Dargaville and her brother Stephen Theobald are two of them who have just celebrated their real birthdays.

“It is not often you have two in a family,” said Judy. “I was 16-years-old, or four in leap years — and my family lived in Te Kopuru when Dr Matich delivered my youngest brother Stephen in 1956.

It is a rare occasion,” said 76-yearold Judy.

“My mother always give me parties on February 28. I didn’t think anything of it until my teens and realised there was something different about my birthday.

It never feels right celebrating early, and it never feels right celebrating on March the first as it is a completely different month.”

The eldest sister to six brothers, she started nurse aiding at Te Kopuru hospital before travelling around New Zealand.

“One day I went roller skating in Auckland and met a soldier, Alan Callagher and we soon married and he became a senior fire truck driver.

“He was involved in the ICI chemical warehouse fire in 1984 and became ill so we eventually moved back to Dargaville to live a quieter life and be close to hospital facilities.”

They had three daughters and a son.

Judy has spent many years campaigning for causes close to her heart. She was

 Dargaville artist Steve Guthrie took his palette outside as he captured the colours of the Kaipara last week. His painting is part of a colour blocking module for the Virtual Art Academy an online art course. “Many people paint from photographs but I find you get much truer colours when you paint outside,” said Steve.

“There were lots of drownings that year — it was sad,” said Judy.

She then spent many years campaigning for help for the firemen who got a variety of illnesses due to attending the ICI fire.

“I just feel if something is wrong I need to try and do something about it.

Maybe that is a part of being a leap year baby.” 

Time for change

Fire season open

Northland principal rural fire officer Kevin Ihaka has declared an ‘Open’ fire season for the Whangarei and Kaipara Districts. This came into force on midnight Friday 19 February until further notice.

The ‘Open’ status applies to all Whangarei and Kaipara District Council areas except Limestone and Rabbit Islands where a permanent Prohibited Season is in place.

This ‘Open’ season does not apply to any State areas administered by

the Department of Conservation.

Anyone lighting a fire in the open is reminded that they may still be held liable for the consequences arising from the fire and care must be taken to avoid fire spread.

Anna Cutts has decided it is time for a change and is closing the doors to her gift and souvenir store Moa on Victoria Street in Dargaville to focus on her online stores.

“Moa has been open for two years now and it is time for a fresh start and I am going to concentrate on our internet stores which have been keeping me really busy. I am looking forward to the change.

They also require less power which means they can complete their ‘flash characteristic’ to a more rapid cycle, improving navigation safety. The light will have its flash characteristic quickened from a flash every 10 seconds to a flash every three seconds.

The red sector will be removed altogether as the area it marked is now designated by lit buoys defining the channels in the area. The council expects to spend approximately another $1,500 on the upgrading of location equipment, batteries and panels.

Kaipara sector lights upgrade “The council takes its role in navigational safety very seriously, and supporting the upgrades and maintenance of aids to navigation is vital,” said Jim Lyle, Northland Regional Council’s Regional Harbourmaster.

“Sail Point light is just south of Ruawai.

The shore-based light is positioned near the top of the huge harbour, giving some surety to navigators in an area where shifting sands make maintaining buoys and beacons difficult.

“The existing sector light is an older style lamp technology and has been operating for more than 20 years.

“Council’s maritime team is about to upgrade the light to new LED lights. They

Innovation drives low cost grass growth Graeme Lawrence’s new business FertStation brings together innovative new fertiliser application technology and a bacteria that fixes atmospheric nitrogen to increase grass growth and reduce costs.

For the last two years Graeme Lawrence has been trialling a new system on his farm, focussing on getting back to the basics of growing good quality grass cheaply.

The system uses a combination of small amounts of urea with finely ground lime, sulphur, magnesium and other trace elements. The fine powder is mixed with water or effluent to form suspended slurry to which is added gibberellic acid. “This year we’ve added Biostart’s new nitrogen fixing bacteria product, Biostart N, to the mix to capture some of the ‘free’ nitrogen from the atmosphere.

The fine lime stimulates soil microbe activity and improves soil structure.

The sulphur in the mix enhances the liming effect of the lime and lifts the farms low sulphur levels. The fineness of the sulphur grinding is an important factor determining the rate at which the sulphur is oxidized to sulphate by microorganisms which in turn gives greater legume (clover) production.

We’re adding magnesium to boost

pasture levels to help minimise milk fever. The Gibberellic acid is added to help get the clovers up and prevent them from being crowded out by the ryegrass. The Biostart N should kick in after the urea has run its course and provide sustained growth by fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere.

The suspension fertiliser + Biostart N mix applied in June 2015 boosted pasture growth rates resulting in an extra 1,000 kg DM/ha of forage over a 20 day period. The pasture crude protein levels were increased by 25%, and combined with higher metabolisable energy levels and digestibility, lead to a higher quality pasture in winter. “What surprised me was the size and health of the clover over the farm. We’ve seen the cows really respond to all this quality grass with both total litres and milk solids increasing. We’ve managed to get five grazings off the one application”.

Phil and Judith Northcott from Big Fun Events will be at the Northland Field Days opposite the Sheep Dog Trials down Dave Phillips Memorial Drive with their range of fun activities for children of all ages.

“Our staff are all fully trained for each activity. It is a family owned business which has been going for 24 years. I first started entertaining as a clown and now we travel around the North Island to many different events specialising in fun and putting smiles on the faces of families,” said Phil.

The clown will be walking around and there will be the bouncy castle, a slide, water balls, the merry go round, the ferris wheel, face painting, Lil’ Orbits doughnuts and mini quad bikes along with many other activities.

“A wide variety of fun is created by our face painters including tigers, princesses, fairies, and batman. The  options are endless.

“Our retro laughing clown game from many years ago is enjoyed by kids in this generation and they really enjoy having a go at what mum and dad used to do when they were little.

“We are constantly adding new attractions to keep our shows fresh and we are always looking for sponsors who may like to help bring entertainment to communities across the region.

“We really enjoy putting smiles on faces. I became a clown 25 years ago because I am just a kid at heart. I

Phil says there is something for everyone.

Around 70 volunteers will set to work with some working all three days.

“We have a very loyal group of people from the community that come back every year. All profits go into Rotary projects with no expenses taken out,” says Dargaville Rotary Club president Brian Burnett.

The Dargaville Rotary Club has been manning the gates and parking since the Northland Field Days began and money raised will go towards projects such as international student exchanges, a president’s scholarship, and the International Polio Eradication campaign.

“We are also conscious of the predicament that Fiji is in at the moment, after Cyclone Winston, and we have already contributed an emergency rescue kit and are

proposing to send two more as soon as funds are available.

“We have had a very happy working relationship with the Field Days’ committee, supporting them in any way we can, and we will continue to do so.”

The Dargaville Rotary Club are always looking for new members from diverse backgrounds and meet once a week for lunch and to hear a variety of different speakers. 

Avatar is now sold in Northland The Avatar range of Side by Sides is now being sold through Northland Powersports in Whangarei.

These Side By Sides are purpose built for rural conditions and have been designed in New Zealand by Hamish Gilbert. He first started manufacturing the Avatar in 2009, firstly through prototyping in New Zealand then taking the product offshore to secure production. The first units arrived here in late 2011 and new updated models are now coming through in 2016.

There is a 800 cc petrol with cvt transmission and a 62 HP diesel with a manual gearbox. This is by far the quietest and most powerful diesel side by side on the market and all models have full engine braking. Also it is the only brand where all new models

come with a galvanised chassis and suspension — a great feature for New Zealand Farmers. There are two different models coming out later in 2016 including a longer wheelbase model. Northland Powersports sell the USA made Arctic Cat and the CF Moto range of quads and side by sides. This year, the dedicated team from the local tyre specialists and gas suppliers have outdone themselves, with an artist’s design planning out an even bigger, bolder frontage.

But this show of expertise on display is not the end of the year’s success for Gas and Tyre — one could say it’s just the capstone of a work long in construction. Recently the firm have gone from having one central location in the town by the Northern Wairoa River to three additional locations, in Kaitaia, Waipapa and Ruakaka. Flexibility, to tackle jobs everywhere from dairy farms to pine forests to busy ports is a key strength.

But it’s the determination to bring those qualities to bear at any hour of the day or night which has seen the black and orange brand reach new heights.

There’s a lot of fun to be had on the Gas and Tyre site — from Ford’s new Everest 4x4 to a ‘swamp struck’ off roader, but the sizzling barbecue is set up for a good cause. All proceeds from the sale of the team’s legendary ‘4x4 Burgers’ will go to the Northland Emergency Services Trust rescue chopper. On Saturday at 11am, good mates of Gas and Tyre, the boys from Mickey Thompson are set to smash a world record on their nearby site!

Rebel with a cause Not many people know that the term ‘maverick’ can be traced back to a single man. Samuel Maverick was a Texan rancher who refused to brand his cattle. When people asked him how he’d stop rustlers, his answer involved some pithy language — and a flash of twin colt revolvers It’s fitting, then, that one of the men who tried to make the Lone Star State independent should gain that highest of stateside honours — having a powerful vehicle named after him. Massive lineup takes the field When the mighty All Blacks get ready to storm the playing fields of world rugby, they do so only after a crew of seasoned selectors choose the very best lineup to wear the black jersey. In recent years, they’ve been spoiled for choice — a similar situation to that faced before Northland Field Days by the team at Dargaville Ford.

2015 was a year which saw great upheaval in the Ford range, with new models arriving thick and fast, while the respected Falcon badge was retired. Two cultures join forces Escape to the Caribbean with ORT

Three years ago the Reverend Kuli Fisi’iahi of the Wesley Methodist Parish, Dargaville, started a Tongan playgroup, Pununga Meesi held at the Multicultural Whare on the grounds of Selwyn Park School and they recently celebrated the combining of a Maori Puna Kainga — playgroup. Minister Rex Nathan lead a blessing ceremony for the group.

“I noticed a lot of Tongan mums pushing strollers on the street every day with nothing to do. We researched the opportunity to start a playgroup for them to come and socialise together whilst preparing their young children for school,” said Reverend Fisi’iahi.

“The most important issue is helping these families with the first steps to education.

“We do that through the Pununga Meesi which means Nest of Mercy in Tongan. The group rent the building off the school which Reverend Fisi’iahi says is in a prime location for those who attend.

“It is on the school compound and the children hear the bell and see the teachers. This helps prepare them for when they start school. We are now Otamatea Repertory Theatre Inc. proudly presents

two cultures supporting each other in an educational environment.”

Reverend Fisi’iahi has been looking for help to install a kitchen and bathroom for the house as the quotes they have been given were at least double the price of what they could afford from a government grant. They are looking at other ways to help with the project.

“At present we share the facilities with the school.”

Freemason representative James Foster has been visiting the group and says Reverend Fisi’iahi gets things up and running and does a lot of community work in the area.

“The ministry he operates reaches far into the community and it would be great to see them accomplish the completion of this project.” 

Otamatea Repertory Theatre promises a night of pure escapism, with its latest production, ‘Murder at Café Noir’.

Set in the Caribbean, the murdermystery pays homage to the Bogart movies, and the audience is not only in the middle of the action, they also help Rick Archer P.I. decide on his next move, and shape the course of events for the evening.

Written by award-winning US playwright, David Landau, who wrote last year’s show ‘The Altos’, the play is one of Landau’s first dinnertheatre works and remains one of the most enduring.

Audience members are encouraged to immerse themselves in the Caribbean theme by dressing up in their best colourful attire. Getting a group of friends together is a guaranteed way of making sure you have a great evening — two heads are better than one for figuring out Whodunnit. There are also skill prizes and best dressed prizes to be won.

The cuisine for the evening is themed to fit the Caribbean location, with special provision for vegetarians and those requiring gluten-free meals.

Director Peter Matheson has had considerable experience on the stage, most recently playing the Ghost of Jacob Marley in ORT’s ‘A Christmas Carol’.

“Being an actor in interactive theatre is ‘scary fun,” he says. “Actors

need to keep their wits about them as the show unfolds. Interactive theatre includes the audience in the midst of the action, and this creates an environment where anything may happen.”

Bookings close off two days prior to each show, as the caterer needs to have numbers in advance. Opening night is in Paparoa on March 4 — bookings at Paparoa Drapery. Waipu on March 5 — bookings at Waipu Hammer Hardware.

With the Field Days in town in makes sense to tune the musical dial to some country music.

Who better to bring to mind those images of Nashville nights and high plains days than a pair of legitimate Kiwi country legends.

Eddie Low began his career in country with the great showbands of the 1960s, a contemporary of Sir Howard Morrison and a seasoned entertainer in his own right. His band, the Quintikis, would tour annually with the reigning Miss New Zealand. Described as ‘the voice in a million’, his artistry has seen him play to crowds in Australia, Canada, the United States, and of course here in New Zealand. After a stint filling in as the legendary Roy Orbison in a rock tribute show, enquiries flooded in as to when he would both release an album, and take his own classic material on the road again. He has — and he’ll be here for Field Days!

Sharing the stage with Eddie Low will be Nashville recording artist Kevin Greaves, son of the legendary Rusty Greaves. With a performing career stretching back to the age of five, there are few performers in any genre who can match the showmanship of this true country music star. He’s played shows with the Dixie Chicks, Hank Snow,

Charlie Pride, and even the late great Tennessee Ernie Ford, and now he’s coming to Dargaville’s Northern Wairoa Hotel for a night of crowd-pleasing, foottapping tunes.
