In the wake of the Christchurch mosques mass shooting tragedy, Mayor Jason Smith has led Kaipara’s expressions of sympathy and solidarity with the city, as Dargaville church and community leaders work towards a service and vigil. Mayor Smith has written the following to Christchurch Mayor, Leanne Dalziel on behalf of the Kaipara community. ‘Tena koe e Mayor Dalziel, ‘On behalf of the people of Kaipara District, please accept our heartfelt condolences at this dark time following the mosque terror events of recent days. ‘No words of mine can attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss for Christchurch that must seem almost overwhelming. Your community is hurting again. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Christchurch, we stand with you. We stand in solidarity with you to mourn the loss of lives, the loss of innocence here, to hold the hurt and to reject the hate. ‘What the world needs now is love. The Te Aroha waiata we sing so frequently at Kaipara District Council and in our community clearly expresses a simple message of hope. “Te aroha, te whakapono, me te rangimarie, tatou tatou e.” (Love, faith and peace to all people). ‘The tragic events in Christchurch remind us of the importance of the simple grace of this message. Please carry this forward as we will do in Kaipara. ‘Resilience of Christchurch citizens has been tested in the past, and we have been watching and cheering
