But with no effective treatments available in New Zealand, Tyler and his mother Wendy are headed for America for an operation.

Ruawai swimmer enjoys the big time u by Colin Patterson

Ruawai youngster Temepara Bristow has been making quite a splash in the swimming world.

Last month the 10-year-old finished in the top 10 in three events in the New Zealand Junior Swimming Championships in Wellington’s Kilbirnie Pool.

Temepara says she got into swimming following in the footsteps of her aunt who was an avid swimmer. Starting when she was five, Temepara soon became so fast that at Ruawai School she had to swim against the boys.

She joined Dargaville Splash Club and now trains three times a week at the

Kauri Coast Pool in Dargaville. Temepara acknowledges the support of her parents who drive her to her training sessions with her coach Kara Hutchinson.

Temepara says her training can be pretty intense. “I swim 1,800 metres each evening. Sometimes I do 2,000.”

To get into the New Zealand championships she had to swim qualifying times all over Northland.

While it was not her first trip to Wellington, Temepara admitted she was nervous before the championships.

“My coach told me to pace myself. In the 200, go steady for the first 100 and then sprint. In the 50 it’s fast all the way.”

Her strategy earned her 8th place in the 200 metres backstroke, 7th in the 50 metres freestyle and 9th in 50 metres backstroke.

With success like that, some in the swimming world say Temepara is headed for big and better things.

Mr Carter was a volunteer with the Dargaville Fire Brigade for 25 years and is a life member of the brigade.

Cyclone Lusi has little impact u by Colin Patterson

The passage of Cyclone Lusi over the weekend appears to have made little difference to parched pastures in the Northern Wairoa.

The rainfall it produced was also insufficient to persuade the Kaipara District Council to drop water restrictions in Dargaville and Baylys Beach.

According to Northland Regional Council figures, while Kaeo and Kaikohe received about 80mm of rain, Dargaville got just 17mm.

Corin Schick who farms at Aoroa just south of Dargaville says the weekend rain has made almost no difference to his pastures. “We’re expecting some growth. But there was so much wind, a lot of the water evaporated quickly.” His rainfall gauge registered 22mm. “It’s better than nothing.”

Alison Allen, who farms near Tangowahine with her husband Roger, says her rain gauge recorded 35mm.

“It’s made a small difference. But we need some follow-up rain.”

Kaipara District Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware says the rain caused the level of the Kaihu River — the source of Dargaville’s drinking water to rise. “But it will subside in two or three days.”

She says water restrictions put in place for Dargaville and Baylys Beach a month ago remain in place.

While those restrictions have led to a slight reduction in consumption, she says consumers need to do more to save water.

While Cyclone Lusi led to the cancellation of most sport and outdoor activities in the Northern Wairoa, it appears to have had little other impact.

Only occasional power outages were reported, with 200 people in Tangiteroria losing power for up to 10 hours, while 381 in Kaiwaka lost power. However their service was restored within an hour.

Northpower spokesperson Steve Macmillan says most outages were caused by trees hitting power lines.

Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade had only one weather-related callout — to remove a tree blocking Murrays Rd on the way to Kaikohe.

MetService forecasts fine weather through to Friday with showers forecast from then until the middle of next week.

World renowned accordionist Kevin Friedrich says the concert is his way of giving back.

“The concert is a thank you to the community, for their continued support over the years and it also provides an opportunity for young musicians to perform during an afternoon of shared music, fun and friendship.”

Kevin will be playing a variety of pieces and, with Pippa Howes, will perform an accordion and flute world premiere by Auckland composer Gary Daverne. Several years ago, Gary wrote Gem of the Kaipara in honour of the late Jenny Cocurullo.

Audiences will also be treated to a performance on the Kauri accordion, which Kevin debuted at last year’s concert. The unique instrument is one of only three individually crafted accordions commissioned by Kevin and made at

the Ikaalinen College of Crafts and Design in Finland by traditional artisan Aaro Luukinen.

An Afternoon of Music will feature an eclectic and memorable mix of ukulele, flute, classical guitar, harmonica, vocalists and piano. A shared afternoon tea is included and the concert will conclude with a traditional jam session and sing-a-long.

Kevin returns to the Kaipara for An Afternoon of Music from his New York base, where he works as a fulltime musician and flight attendant.

He is also ambassador for the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) — an umbrella organisation for national accordion associations — and has recently returned from their winter congress and general assembly in Sarajevo. ¢

Action on harbour health u by Paul Campbell

The Kaipara Harbour has come a step closer to better health with a decision to install state-of-the art monitoring equipment to assess water quality.

Niwa, Auckland Council and the Northland Regional Council researchers will establish three Estuarine Monitoring Systems, or EMS, at Tikonui Wharf near Ruawai, and at two sites in the harbour’s south, near Hoteo.

The Tikonui station will measure the water quality of the Wairoa system — the largest freshwater inflow to the harbour blamed for much of the flow of fine sediments into the waterway.

The stations will measure water quality in the harbour and tidal creeks, particularly water clarity which is affected by fine sediment, but also by organic matter and phytoplankton.

Niwa’s coastal scientist co-ordinating the project, Andrew Swales, said there was increasing appreciation that fine sediments have major ecological impacts, including preventing light from reaching important ecosystems, such as seagrass, which in turn affected food supply for some fish species and sea birds. The project which is funded by

central and regional government, would also see continuous measurement of water temperature, salinity, tidal height, water currents and waves.

The stations will operate continuously, powered by solar panels, with remote stations monitoring each installation.

The data will be used by council staff and Niwa researchers and made publicly available on Auckland Council’s website.

It can also be used to check weather conditions on the water.

“These stations comprise state-ofthe-art measuring instruments that will give us the most accurate information possible.” said Mr Swales, adding that the programme will provide important data on big weather events which contribute to sedimentation.

Niwa principal scientist, Dr Rob DaviesColley, said that the stations were a crucial part of studies into fine sediment and other pollutants that affect Kaipara Harbour but findings were also expected to have national significance. ¢

Suicide in the spotlight Providing support u by Colin Patterson

Suicide is far from painless, a public meeting on the subject was told last week.

The meeting in Dargaville, was an initiative of Kaipara District Council staff member Cerise Selkirk, although she is keen to emphasise it was not a council event.

However Cerise acknowledges help from KDC community engagement officer Darlene Lang in promoting it.”

“I wanted to raise awareness of suicide. Many people don’t to talk about it.”

She says more than 50 people turned up last Tuesday evening and there was standing room only in the meeting room.

Ms Selkirk gave her personal story about suicide. “In 2012 my best friend committed suicide. It happened out of the blue. I blame myself for not being there when she needed us most.”

Her story encouraged others to come forward with their experiences. Those stories shared similar themes of shock and guilt. “It was quite an emotional meeting,” says Cerise. The event attracted social workers, teachers, counsellors and Maori social service providers.

There were also representatives from Raid, a group from Whangarei that helps young people thinking of suicide.

Cerise says one counsellor working with five-year-olds says they already know what suicide is and some were even considering it. The meeting formed a committee of young people — including one Dargaville High School student — to plan future activities.

She says the group aims to help those affected by suicide and reach those thinking of it and try to prevent them from going ahead.

In December 2000, a group of concerned individuals, organisation representatives and community leaders from throughout the Kaipara region met to discuss the damage that is caused by abuse and consider ways in which the issue may be addressed. From this initial meeting, Kaipara Abuse Prevention (KAP) was formed.

KAP is an incorporated society, managed by a governance group and supported by a network of dedicated volunteers.

Their aim is to raise awareness around the issue of abuse, provide preventative support services and advocacy for families and support those who provide these services.

The German Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria and is an important part of Bavarian culture. It’s origins lie in the October 1810 marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese.

It’s the recipe for a sophisticated night out in one of the world’s entertainment capitals — decadent cocktails, artfully prepared canapés and a revue of famous tunes to set your toes tapping.

We’re talking showstoppers from Wicked, from Les Mis, and from composers like Adele and Nick Cave, matched up with cuba libres and mojitos while candles flicker around a cluster of round-topped tables. But this isn’t the dance card at the Dunes in Vegas or some up-market nightspot off Broadway.

It’s the latest concept brought to life by the volunteer troubadours at the Dargaville Little Theatre, and it’s already causing quite a stir in the riverside town.

Anna Cutts directs the action as a series of musical vignettes play out on stage, bringing life to an eclectic mix of songs. Some come from the tradition of musical theatre, some are personal favourites of the performers, and others are chart-topping hits given a theatrical twist which may prove unexpected.

Honda’s big Red UTV was the side-by-side off roader of choice for many farmers here in New Zealand — not least because farmers have come to trust the engineering and know-how of the machines with the wing emblem on the fuel tank.

But alas, times change, and the Big Red is no more. What we have instead is a brand new UTV, designed and built from the ground up to be a complete evolution.

Big success for Allie and Danielle

Big River FM interns Allie Dinnage and Danielle Guise have spent the last three months honing their broadcasting skills and now their hard work has been recognised by More FM Whangarei.

Although the two will continue work at Big River FM during the week, they have both landed contracts with More FM. “This is a really positive move and they have both worked hard,” says station manager, Anaru Tana. “Allie struggled a little initially but with persistence and coaching, she has gained confidence p Danielle and Allie can be heard every week on Big and ability.

River FM and have now secured contracts with More “Allie and Danielle’s FM Whangarei internship with Big River FM actually lasts until June but I think it’s first Saturday afternoon show last unlikely that they will see out those weekend and she is also assisting the three months, as I believe they will both promotions team.

“I’m really interested in getting into secure employment before that time.”

Twenty year old Danielle is joining radio production and voicing long term but announcing is growing on me.”

This April, Te Houhanga Marae will celebrate 100 years since its wharenui was opened on Station Road in Dargaville. Bearing the name Rahiri, it was the first carved meeting house to be built in Northland since pre-European times.

The centennial celebrations are set for April 25 to 27 and will coincide with ANZAC Day. The activities will commence on Friday with a memorial service and blessing of the newly erected flagpole.

A Whanau Fun Festival and Community Open Day will follow, providing an opportunity for the whole community to participate in this milestone event. The open day will include a talent show, Te Houhanga’s Got Talent hosted by Jamie Toko.

“This is an event for everyone,” says Maria Parore Larsen. “Our focus is two-way — we are celebrating whanau and also acknowledging our part in the community.

“There are many people who have a long association with the marae and have helped us in many ways and we want them to feel they can be a part of the centennial weekend.”
