 The weather was perfect for the Otamatea Aero Club’s birthday celebrations. More than 25 planes parked on the airfield as they celebrated 51 years of flying the Kaipara skies.

Many past members attended the event and anecdotes were exchanged. The cake was cut by Jack Bendon one of the first club flight instructors and Gordon Murray, one of the founders of the club and club patron. “I was more than happy with the turnout and the goodwill shown to the club by those who came.” said president Tuhi Manukau.

p The Northland Secondary School Sports Association Waka Ama Regatta was held at Kai Iwi lakes with 19 teams from seven schools around Northland participating in the event. Dargaville High School featured prominently in the day placing third in the J19 boys and novice categories. “I am very proud of the Dargaville students as two of the teams they competed against are actually going to the world championships. The NorthTec campus in Dargaville celebrated the official opening of their new complex at the old Vet clinic at 52 Murdoch Street with a powhiri and blessing last week.

“We have here the potential for an internationally recognised attraction.

This consultation is about deciding how we balance the ecological aspects with community, cultural and recreational uses of the lake,” he said.

Lake Taharoa, which has the most recreational activity on and around it, is recognised by NIWA as one of the best examples of a clear-water lake in Northland.

Taharoa Domain Governance Committee chair and Kaipara District Council commissioner John Robertson encouraged everyone to be involved in the submission process.

“Reserves require a plan which are revisited every 10 years. The current plan was made 12 years ago and the committee felt it needed revision and updating. This draft is a proposed plan

and we are asking the community to make submissions to it.” Friends of Kai Iwi Lakes spokesperson Rob Stevenson says he is concerned those involved in the decision making process had not considered what economic and environmental impacts the proposed changes would have.

“Our main focus is just pushing those submissions and we would really like to encourage people to speak to their submissions to council.”

Kauri Coast Promotions Society committee member Jane McComb said she was pleased with the questions that were raised.

“I felt it was a productive meeting and that by the end of the evening people had a greater understanding of each other.” Submissions for the Plan close March 22, 2016 at 4.30pm. ¢

Kim Roberts has opened with a fresh coat of paint, a new outdoor eating area, local art on display, and new security cameras set up on all angles of the shop, and she is looking forward to meeting customers.

“We are across the road from the medical centre and we want to be a service for the community. ‘The Dock’ is a place you can stop and gather supplies,” said Kim. “We will also be taking our takeaway menus around local businesses and offer free delivery for workers’ lunches as they often just have a half hour lunch break. I like the thought of working together as a community and supporting each other. I would also like to hear ideas of what our customers would like

to see available in the store.” They use 100 percent pure Angus beef patties in their burgers.

“I love interacting with people, it is my passion. I am a hairdresser but having a small coffee shop was always my dream so I am retiring from hairdressing to focus on this.

My daughter Cara and friends Sandra and Joy are helping me, and I hope to create more jobs.

“We are open seven days a week and offer a range of food items including takeaways, filled rolls, salads, basic grocery items and coffee to go.

“The previous owner has returned to the field of work she most enjoys which is homeopathy and we wish her well with her future.” ¢

Bringing back the Kumara Festival u by Ayla Miller

The Dargaville Community Development Board Inc are calling for innovative and driven people to help revive a Kumara Festival, as suggestions from community meetings, and a workshop run by town revitalisation expert Peter Kenyon last year are put into action.

“The purpose of re-establishing the Kumara Festival is to have a signature event in town that will bring people into the region,” says DCDB development coordinator Lorraine Davidson.

In the past the Kumara Festival was a week long celebration which included events such as kumara themed cooking competitions and a Kumara King and Queen coronation. It is hoped that a similar programme will be organised for 2017.

“The festival will utilise old events and introduce some new ones. We are looking for a new group of people who would like to drive the project.”

The DCDB hopes to help establish a steering committee to organise the festival.

“Our role will be to help facilitate the committee, offer suggestions and direct them to funding opportunities.”

The board urges people to register their interest as soon as possible so they can finalise a date for their first meeting. “Should the Kumara Festival

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch have recently started a full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. They are planning vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Please refer to the programme below for location of spraying, which is subject to weather conditions.

Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction.

Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water that is standing in the fittings for several hours.

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals which may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.

We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Auction funds for Fiji

Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club has pledged $5000 from proceeds of its upcoming grand auction to go to Fiji, as Rotary New Zealand appeals for urgent funds following the devastation from Cyclone Winston.

Proposed changes to firearms laws could have a negative impact on Dargaville’s economy according to Sporting Shooters Association of New Zealand Northland committee member, Alec Melville.

“Rotary has a first-hand knowledge of the devastation in Fiji from Rotary clubs and membership throughout the Islands. This means aid can be delivered promptly where required and the rebuild can be prioritised,” said president Bruce Nelder.

Rotary has no administration costs so every dollar donated ends up in Fiji. “Rotary Emergency Response Kits pre-positioned at three locations in Fiji are being dispatched to affected areas. In addition, family food packs to supply a family of four for a week, have been pre-packed in Fiji prior to the cyclone passing through and these too are being distributed,” he said.

They will be collaborating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Emergency Task Force and the Fiji Disaster Management Office, to ensure that the emergency response kits and food packs are directed for best possible advantage to those affected.

“Rotarians in Fiji will provide logistical support and ensure help gets to where it is most urgently required.” The auction is a popular event on the Rotary calendar and a major fund raiser. It will be held at the Maungaturoto Primary School grounds on Saturday March 19

To administer Paper4Trees waste minimisation and recycling project at 22 Kaipara Schools. Project rewards schools for recycling by giving them native trees to plant. The programme provides recycling bins for the schools to collect materials to be recycled, but it is up to the school to arrange for the recycling of what is collected.

This service could be considered to be consistent with the purpose of Local Government as it supports recycling.

Progressive Paparoa and Paparoa Lions Club

$1,650.00 per annum

The annual Northern Wairoa Boating Club Raft Race is set to take place on Saturday April 9. Starting from the Old boat shed slipway on the Kaihu River, at the old Avoca yards, participants will be competing for the Edgar Bradley Memorial Trophy.

Falls, feuds and finishes are just a few words that will be floating around the Te Kopuru Domain on Saturday, March 19 as Maniacs United presents live pro wrestling for the first time outside Auckland.

“We want to see as many of the community as possible take part this year and get families having fun on the river. The whole town will be able to view from start to finish from the foreshore, the best viewing platforms are on the deck at the boating club or the wharf,” said co-organiser Warwick Savage.

“We have made new classes apart from the main race. The new features this year will be five sponsored classes all $50 each. First family raft, first high school, first intermediate age, first business or club and first kayak — kayaks are sit on type up to three metres.

The rules have been tightened up this year more to the spirit of the original

rules and support craft will be on the water. The course will be racing around a pylon of the Northern Wairoa bridge then returning to the boating club.

Craft scrutineering starts at 11.45 am with races starting with the kayaks at 12.15pm and the main raft race at 12.45pm.

There are cash prizes with first prize being $200. Second prize $100 and the novelty prize is $100. The club will be open for the day and food and a sausage sizzle will be available for purchase.

In a bid to ensure the Te Kopuru Domain and accompanying facilities are kept for community use, residents Jean Johnson and Doug Greenwood are sponsoring the event that will see Kingston Eclipse, New Zealand Women’s Champion Just Plain Evil, Tank, Blaze, Scarlett, Jason Brody any many more show off their moves.

“The domain isn’t getting used much so we want to encourage people to come to Te Kopuru for a change.

We don’t want to see the toilets taken away as that will have a big impact on Te Kopuru and we need to see support

from the community,” says Jean. There will also be the chance to meet the wrestlers and collect autographs post show.

Residents and members of the Te Kopuru Domain committee hope to hold more events like this one in the future if there is enough interest.

“It will be an evening of family fun and all proceeds will go to the Te Kopuru Volunteer Fire Brigade,” Jean says.

The Council resolved to contribute $10,000.00 towards the upgrade of the Hall carpark in July 2014, and this was paid in 2015 to assist with the upgrade.

Recreation facilities are consistent with the purpose of Local Government.

Volunteers are involved in the operation of the Bowling Club.

Community Connexions Arty Farties

$5,345.00

To purchase a lawnmower and weed‑eater ‑ $4,845.00, and partial funding towards a composting toilet of $600.00 (the rest of the funding for the toilet has been secured).

Could possibly be considered a recreational facility and a form of community infrastructure (Arty Farties offers community gardens and a community space, facilities workshops for the community, operates a food bank) so could be considered consistent with the purpose of local government, though it is a grey area.

Arty Farties is operated by volunteers.

Noticing a lack of accessible and coordinated social services in areas of the Kaipara during her work as a Whanau Ora nurse, Taherama Hollis set about forming the Tamatea Community Trust Mangawhai, and they are now searching for a place to call home.

The second annual Wellsford Wardrobe Clearout is back and this free clothing event is for anyone and everyone. It will be held at the Wellsford Community Centre on Saturday April 16 from 8am–12 noon.

“This is a great opportunity to clear out items that are no longer worn and refresh someone else’s or your own style at the same time,” said organiser, Julia Withers.

“It was an idea I had last year.

Wellsford is a very community spirited town and in my circle of friends we always do clothes swaps. We decided why not make this a whole town event. Everybody likes clothes so we opened it up to the community.

“It is a people caring for people thing and it’s really fun because it’s for free and that’s the icing on the top. Friends provide baking for those attending and anyone is welcome to come on the day.”

Clothes come from as far away as the Waikato. There are also other household items available.

“I love people and helping others and this is everybody helping each other. It is a great time to sort out your unwanted items. If you have nothing to give that is ok, we want the community to enjoy themselves.

“All clothing, shoes and accessories are greatly appreciated by others in the community. There will be tea, coffee and homemade morning tea available.

“That’s just to prove that there is such a thing as a free lunch.”

Donated items can be left in the Community Centre foyer on any Sunday morning before April 16 or contact Julia on 027 433 8581 to arrange a pick-up. ¢

The organisation have recently become registered as a charitable trust. Their first mission will be to secure premises and funding so they can provide a base to work from.

The idea for the trust began in 2001 when Taherama began working for Te Ha Oranga as Whanau Ora nurse.

“I was based in Kaiwaka and the area that I covered for my job was from Kaiwaka to Ruawai. It was the first time that nursing services were going into those areas,” she says.

It was during this time that she realised how much of a demand there was for these services. Before the Tamatea Community Trust there were no services in Mangawhai and many people in need could not afford to travel to Whangarei or Dargaville.

Trust secretary Sue Poynter says when the organisation is up and running, they hope to be able to provide some of the services as well as coordinate them.

“We had about 75 people attend a meeting last month which was really encouraging. There’s a whole range of people who want to be able to meet

the needs of clients in Mangawhai. It is about coordinating them and making a one-stop shop.

“At the moment they are having to go to people’s homes which is not always appropriate,” she says. ¢

We all know by now that the future of transport is electric.

Inevitably the march of progress will bring us machines for all terrains, as soulful and as thrilling to look at and to drive as the great petrol-powered icons of the 20th century. But, unwilling to wait, a team of Kiwi inventors are making the process happen right now, in a very surprising niche of the automotive spectrum.

Anthony Clyde and Daryl Neal are the masterminds behind UBCO — a new kind of utility bike which utilises revolutionary electric two-wheel-drive technology. Both have been active in the e-bike field for years, but both saw the opportunity to develop something that’s neither a racing machine or a strict commuter — a small, rugged, versatile electric bicycle which can travel off-road.

The key to their design is a tough frame, coupled to twin hub-mounted electric motors and a very high performance battery, situated down low for stable weight distribution.

What this adds up to is unlike anything else off the road today.

Coming from New Zealand, both of

the designers were very familiar with the small displacement farm bikes our local rural folks work with every day.

Not built for power but for economy, versatility and balance, these little 125200cc machines have a common design language, developed in the 70s and 80s and still the same today.

UBCO, the utility bike, aims to replace these with an electric alternative, while also allowing riders to branch out into recreational riding too.

Now, the big question is — why change? Small farm bikes are evergreen, right? Well, not as green as an electric machine with the same power and torque, with the stability and grip of both wheels driving it. A machine which

And one which is utterly silent, meaning that livestock will not be spooked by engine noise.
