 Kaipara residents experienced an unexpected convoy of vintage tractors towing caravans when the Hauraki Far and Wide Tractor Trekkers were on their annual road trip to Cape Reinga. Along the way they have been raising money for Ronald McDonald House, travelling down back country roads at 25km per hour and covering about 150 kilometres a day, said president of the trekkers Robin Hill. The convoy stopped for a night at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club at Harding Park.

 The Magic of Mosaics art exhibition has opened at Mangawhai Artists Gallery on Moir Street, Mangawhai and runs until Monday March 20 from 10am–3pm daily. Local artist Jeanette Vickers said: “Artists Pat and Steve George, Lynette Ingram, Brenda Everson and Karen Briery have presented a beautiful display of colourful contemporary pieces of art. The group come from the breadth of the Kaipara and use a variety of different materials including slate and stained glass, pebbles, marbles, flax and shells. This is very different to what is usually used. It is well worth coming along to the exhibition to see something different in the arts.”

Kaipara volunteer firefighters are gearing up to compete in the annual firefighter Sky Tower stair challenge in May, climbing the 1103 steps to the top with proceeds going to Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

appreciate the Keep It Simple Systems (KISS) that they run. “Delwyn was born and raised on the same road we live on now. We never intended to live back here, but we are very happy in Kaiwaka,” said Niall. “Remember, happy wife, happy life!” The couple would like to retain their current sharemilking position, purchasing the farm by June 2021.

Nineteen-year-old Blake Anderson won $3,370 in prizes, and he is farm assistant on Carlton Smyth’s 420cow, 180ha property in Kaiwaka.

He entered the awards competition “for the experience and to meet new people,” and his farming goals include managing his own dairy farm. Born and raised in Kaiwaka, Blake said winning was “unbelievable. I wasn’t expecting to even get placed. The award has helped me by getting my name out there and giving me confidence.” ¢

The Dargaville brigade have seven firefighters competing. “I’m really looking forward to it as it’s something to give back to the community and these poor people who get leukaemia.

Also we’re getting the benefit out of it in terms of fitness,” said firefighter Nigel Greaves.

The brigade has fundraised with raffles so far and on Friday, March 31st, they are holding a steak dinner down at the station. “We’ve had some meat and kumara generously donated

by Silver Fern Farms and Doug at Kaipara Kumara,” says Nigel.

as well. Firefighter Natalia Partridge says “fundraising for the leukaemia foundation is a massive motivator as well as doing it together and challenging ourselves. It’s cool to be part of something bigger than our station and to represent it.” For fundraising they have put coin buckets in Ruawai shops. They also have a steak dinner night coming up, with the date yet to be confirmed.

Ten firefighters from the Wellsford brigade are also competing. Senior firefighter Matt Railey says that having lost friends and family to cancer, fundraising is the main driver.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir/Madam A tragedy of monumental proportion is unfolding at Te Arai beach.

Having already carved up the land behind the beach north of Te Arai Point, developers have now turned their attention to the beach which stretches south from Te Arai Point to Pakiri.

It’s obvious the developers intention is to turn what should have been a national park for all to enjoy, into an American-style

private, Exclusive enclave for a few select people, mostly from overseas.

The ‘great unwashed’ will be kept as far away as possible so as to not disturb the wealthy few, hence the attempt to close off the Black Swamp car park from the public.

This is not the Kiwi way, it’s wrong and everyone knows it.

Stand up and speak out before it’s too late.

Dear Sir There has been much discussion on our rivers and harbours and the effect of the dairy industry on the quality of the water.

The Kaipara harbour is the drainage catchment for about 640,000ha of land and the myriad towns, villages and road networks.

In the case of the Otamatea river at Batley, at least two townships’ wastewater and sewage after treatment discharge into it (Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka). Most toilets and septic tanks ultimately find their way to the harbour.

At least two old town dumps closed

some 30 years or more ago and sealed, to supposedly stop leaching, are on the banks of this stretch of the harbour. Maungaturoto is far from sealed and continues to leach every tide.

Miles of sealed highway and metal roads have oil and detritus ultimately washed into the harbour after rain.

The dairy industry is far from perfect, but it is far from the only perpetrator in this pollution debate.

Those who live and work in the area, as well as pass through, all contribute to water quality.

Lessons on reducing, reusing and recycling are underway and students from Tangiteroria and Tinopai primary schools are the first to participate in the new educational programme.

Love Kaipara educator and Kaipara District Councillor Victoria del la VarisWoodcock hopes to visit all Kaipara schools with her educational programme on environmental issues in 2017.

“The focus of the lessons is so students learn that looking after the earth can be fun as well as rewarding,” says Victoria.

Throughout the lesson students research key materials which make up

recyclable products such as sand for glass and steel for tin cans during their first activity. Afterwards they apply this knowledge in order to practise sorting out recycling everyday household items. Both schools also had a taste of gardening in the form of potting-up and planting autumn vegetable seeds.

The students will nurture the seedlings until they are ready to be planted in the school’s vegetable garden. ¢

Ruawai-raised world class shearer Rowland Smith competed in the 57th Golden Shears competition in Masterton recently, winning his fourth Golden Shears title.

HIPPY Wellsford invites families with children aged between three and a half and four and a half years old from the Wellsford, Mangawhai and Kaiwaka areas to participate in the ‘parents as teachers programme’.

The 30-year-old, who is now based in Hastings, won the 20-sheep open title, his first PGG Wrightson national championship allbreeds title, and helped lead New Zealand to victory over Australia in the Lister Shearing Trans Tasman test.

Organisers said that a crowd of more than 1,000 packed into Masterton’s War Memorial Stadium to watch the open final.

The open title is judged on the speed and quality of shearing, and Rowland’s win was due to his 17.19-minute and 60.703-point performance.

This was four seconds  Rowland Smith with his Golden Shears open title trophy ahead of the second fastest time and 3.325 points ahead In the Trans Tasman test, Rowland of second place winner, Aaron Haynes became the first New Zealander to be from Feilding. in eight tests since March 2013.

In the PGG Wrightson national Rowland was also named the championship, a mixed breed 15-sheep New Zealand Rural Sportsperson of competition, Rowland’s winning time the Year at the inaugural Norwood was 19.32 minutes and 77.01 points, New Zealand Rural Sports Awards 1.618 points ahead of previous in Palmerston North, last Friday, champion John Kirkpatrick from Napier. A Rotary road safety programme focussed on educating local youth has been an eye-opening experience for 60 students.

The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness course has been run for a number of years with Year 12 Ruawai College and Dargaville High School students and this year saw around 60 students from DHS attend.

Dargaville Rotary youth director Corin Schick said it was crucial to teach and educate the students on road safety at a time in their life when they start driving a car and ride as a passenger in a car driven by one of their peers, “a time before they think they know it all.”

Sections throughout the day involved looking at skid testing, tailgating and listening to a local policeman speak about road accidents they have attended as well as hearing first-hand from a victim.

“During the skid testing part students placed a cone where they thought a vehicle would stop once applying the brakes at speeds of 40, 50 and 60kms to make them aware of stopping distances,” he said.

“Each time they are blown away by how long it takes for a car to stop — it makes the teens think how quickly it can all happen. It teaches you to make sure to stop, look and don’t rush — it just isn’t worth it.”

The Rotary club is looking forward to hosting many more courses in the future.

“We already think it’s such a great initiative supporting our local schools and every year we see the same results from the teens and they go away as totally different people,” said Corin. ¢

A group of Kaipara men are keen to start up a Menz Shed club in Dargaville. Menz Shed has been a New Zealand registered charity since 2013 and has clubs all over the country. It exists to bring retired men together in one community space to share their skills, socialise and work on practical tasks individually or as a group.

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe is putting its unmentionables centre stage for the next three months, with a newly opened exhibition from its textile collection — which contains a wide range of underwear.

The idea for one in Dargaville came from the late David Saies who passed away last year. In his will “the Dargaville Rotary Club became the unexpected beneficiary of a very generous bequest,” said Menz Shed chairman and Rotary member Brian Burnett.

“In terms of the will, Rotary was required to establish a Menz Shed. To assist with its establishment, Rotary was gifted all Mr Saies woodworking machinery, engineering lathe, a substantial amount of tools, and a sum of cash.

“The Rotary Club has been very keen to involve others in this project and from the outset agreed that the Dargaville Lions Club and the wider community should form part of the trust,” said Brian.

The club is keen to find a building in the central Dargaville area, with space to set up a workshop, and is inviting prospective members or anyone, who can help out with a home.

The Kaiwaka community neighbourhood support group are holding a Neighbour’s Day at the sports grounds on Gibbons Road, Kaiwaka, on Saturday March 25 from 10am–2pm.

The group was established at the end of last year when local whaea Maria Paikea approached Barry Wallace to coordinate a neighbourhood support group for the town.

“The day is about people coming and meeting each other and getting to know who lives in their area. It is important to get to know your neighbours and make friends. It is a good opportunity for families new to the community to come along and introduce themselves,” said co-organiser Beth Stone.

There will be various activities on the day including an open mic for musicians and others to share their talents, and children’s activities such as running races and games, and the local scouts will be on hand.

“There will be a sausage sizzle and different varieties of food including maori fried bread and kai,” said Beth.

“There is so much people don’t know about their neighbours, and community support is about looking after each other and also crime prevention.

If you don’t see someone for a couple of days, go and knock on their door and check they are OK, and if you see strange vehicles hanging around, call someone and note their number plate if you can.”

The group are organising a Facebook page in the near future and will have handy hints and tips presented on it such as advice on water saving as well as local events and information. ¢

Kevin will also be playing a rare Russian accordion which will then be donated to the museum’s collection of more than 100 accordions. Made in 1959 in a factory that no longer exists, the instrument is named Rostov-on-Don after the small Russian town where it was made.

This is also home to one of the world’s most renowned accordionists of today, Viatcheslav Semionov. It was in this town at the world accordion championships last year that Kevin acquired the accordion from a friend.

At the concert “Elena, Alexandra and Alina Reekie will dance a traditional Russian dance to welcome this instrument to its new home in Dargaville,” said Kevin.

Kaipara Physiotherapy has expanded its skill set and opened up the doors to even more opportunities to help local folks as it welcomes Amanda Howse to the team.

The popular local provider continues to offer a full range of physiotherapy treatment options across the district, with clinics in Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Dargaville.

But with the addition of fully qualified and registered hand therapist Amanda, there’s more scope to help the healing process along. Hand injuries are common and range from post-surgery recovery through to progressive conditions such as repetitive strain injury (RSI), arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome.

As many people’s hands are their livelihood, having a qualified specialist in the Kaipara is a major bonus.

Amanda comes to join physiotherapists Lyndsey and Lynne after almost ten years in a private practice in Hamilton.

After completing her training in conventional physiotherapy — which

she will continue to practice in the Kaipara — Amanda was encouraged by her boss to branch out with a year of postgraduate study.

Her area of expertise covers from the elbows down, as many of the delicate connections which move our fingers and wrists are located further up the arm.

For post operative care, and to help heal damaged hands and wrists, Amanda is skilled at creating customised splints using thermo-plastic technology.

Like much of modern physiotherapy treatment, Amanda’s work is more often than not covered by ACC, and patients can consult her directly without a referral from their doctor.

For now, the dedicated medical professional and working farmer is settling into her new home, and invites those with aches and pains to call on her expertise. ¢

When it comes to power and economy, there’s little question that electronic fuel injection beats traditional carburetted aspiration hands down. It may not have always been the case, but the modern computerised fuel delivery system is the key to better compression and more horsepower.

The old style of carburettor went out of automobiles in the early 1980s, with the final examples being cars like the Triumph 2500 S and the first-edition Mazda RX7. Lyn Josey is currently the only Victim Support volunteer for the entire Kaipara district and is on the lookout for new volunteers.

She has offered her voice, ears and time to families and individuals in Kaipara for the last 16 years.

“We desperately need more volunteers. I find this position to be very rewarding and it makes it worthwhile when you can change someone’s life and put them on the road to recovery,” says Lyn. Lyn started when she was involved in her own family crisis — up until then she had no idea Victim Support existed.

“During the legal process I saw an advertisement to become a volunteer and felt the calling — I’ve been here ever since.” Her time spent working for Victim Support and most recently assisting SOS Kaipara has opened her eyes to situations that she once thought only occurred in big cities.

While nine times out of 10 the majority of volunteer work is over the phone, Lyn is also rostered along with a team in Whangarei to attend incidents or be on call when required.
