p For the next three weeks, visitors to The Warehouse in Dargaville are being offered the chance to hop on the stationary bicycle for a few minutes to clock up some kilometres for Plunket New Zealand. Nationwide, branches are working towards a goal of more than 999 kilometres, each representing one day of a child’s first 1,000 days, this being the most influential time of their life.

Year 13 student at Dargaville High School, Griffin Tiller, did his bit accumulating 30 kilometres last Wednesday and challenges others to do the same. Car seat checks were also being done outside, and the injury prevention team member will return on April 11 for another session.

The $39 million Matakohe deviation of State Highway 12 and replacement of two single-lane bridges has taken a huge step toward completion after an estimated 700 people attended an open day and walked over the new crossing.

It was the first time the public has been allowed on to the larger of the two new bridges in what was billed as the ‘community barbecue on the bridge’.

Kaipara District Council is inviting public submissions on a draft Policy on Dogs and Dog Management Bylaw, proposing new rules for dogs in the district, which will replace the current 2009 bylaw.

The draft policy aims to keep dogs as a positive part of life in the Kaipara region, adopt measures to protect the safety of the community and promote responsible dog ownership. Ararua horse trek fundraiser For the third year organisers of the annual Ararua Community Horse Trek are inviting riders to register for one of the biggest community hall fundraisers. The trek begins at 10.30am on Saturday, March 23.

p Horse riders are invited to register for the annual Ararua Community Horse Trek event and enjoy the local scenery

Riding through farmland, tracks and roads in the community area, the trek is suitable for all ages and experience levels; however, those under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult rider.

“There are usually between 25 and 30 riders, but we would like to attract more,” said organiser Beth de Groot. “No dogs, stallions, lead rein or walkers are allowed.”

A group safety briefing is given before commencement to identify road crossing areas where traffic control will be provided, and a social gathering

with a barbecue is provided at the completion of the ride.

All funds raised are donated towards the upkeep of the community hall and for providing events in the community.

To increase the value of the donation organisers are seeking a trek sponsor anyone able to help can contact Beth.

The cost is $30 an adult and $10 for riders under 16 years.

The Dargaville Museum is once again proud to present an afternoon of musical entertainment with Kevin Friedrich and friends on Sunday, March 31 at the Lighthouse Function Centre.

The popular event is suitable for all ages and tastes in genre particularly with this year’s theme Music from the Stage and Screen. Performances will feature music from shows such as Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, Evita and more.

The programme will include acts from 15 musicians, vocalists, groups and individuals, each presenting a range of their talent for the audience. “With a variety show like this, you never know what’s going to happen,” said organiser, Margaret Tier.

Featuring during the afternoon is Kevin Friedrich playing a kauri accordion with Linda Emmett Litt playing her kauri drum. Kevin’s introduction to music was

from Linda’s mother and is well-known for establishing the accordion collection at the museum.

“These concerts give a stage to new performers who develop into wonderful musicians. It’s great watching them grow,” said Kevin.

Local mosaic artist, Kim Harrison, will unveil a themed mosaic accordion to a new work, Song of Patience, written by New Zealand composer, Gary Daverne.

The mosaic accordion is decorated to celebrate Anzac.

The Te Roroa Learning Assistance driver education programme needs volunteers to work as driver mentors for students for a minimum of two hours each week.

A Dargaville farm assistant has won a major title in the Northland Dairy industry awards. Daniel Waterhouse, 23 is a farm assistant on Brian Jackson’s 700-cow, 550ha Dargaville property and has been named Northland Dairy Trainee of the year, winning $5,550 in prizes and three merit awards.

“I love being outdoors, working with animals and enjoy different challenges,” he says. “My aim is to climb the ranks within the dairy industry, with herd and farm ownership the ultimate goal.”

Colin and Isabella Beazley from Wellsford were named the 2019 Northland Share Farmers of the

Year and won $7,927 in prizes plus four merit awards. The other major winner was Dairy Manager of the Year Lorraine Ferreira.

The Beazleys have entered the awards twice previously and were third placegetters last year in the same category. They are 50/50 sharemilkers for Neil Jones and Wendy Crow-Jones milking 330 cows on the 163ha Wellsford property.

Winner of the 2019 Northland Dairy Manager of the Year competition is 31-year-old Lorraine Ferreira, who won $6,400 in prizes and four merit awards and a farm manager on Fonterra CoOperative Group’s Hikurangi farm, milking 400 cows. ¢

Kaipara District councillors, Anna Curnow and Libby Jones, are thrilled to have world-class speakers coming to the Kaipara to share their experiences on increasing digital connectedness. The event is open to the public from 8am on Tuesday, March 26 at the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall.

“I am really excited about the opportunity to hear about how other parts of the world address issues such as adequate internet access and digital inclusion, especially for our rural communities. We don’t often get a chance to speak directly with people with this level of experience,” said Anna Curnow.

Two speakers, Robyn Krock and Chris Pederson, are travelling from the United States to share their knowledge.

Robyn will be discussing how increased access to broadband or other internet-enabling technologies in rural communities can further educational, health and profitability of farms. She has written a thesis on the topic of local food systems within a community.

Chris leads development efforts related to initiating community development, workforce, broadband expansion and digital inclusion programmes.

His talk will focus on how bridging the digital divide can help vulnerable populations and improving digital literacy.

Other speakers include Ashna Khan, Emeline Paat-Dahlstrom and Eric Dahlstrom.

Libby Jones echoed her colleague saying “it is great to have such speakers in Kaipara willing to share their experiences on increasing digital connectedness, which is vital for all aspects of our economy.”

Swimmers from the Dargaville Swim Club are putting the Kaipara region on the map with their consistent results in the pool.

Recently five junior swimmers from the club competed at the New Zealand Junior Festival of Swimming, a nationwide competition, which saw more than 1,300 entrants.

“To compete in this competition swimmers had to meet entry times and they were the only swimmers from Dargaville and Northern Wairoa that competed,” said Dargaville Swim Club secretary, Sam Simons.

The New Zealand Junior Festival of Swimming is one of the largest swimming events in New Zealand, attracting 9 to 12-year-old children competing simultaneously in four venues including Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington and Invercargill.

In addition, 13-year-old Dargaville High School student, Brayden Smith,

has met strict qualifying times to compete in an upcoming Division II nationwide competition in Dunedin.

Brayden has qualified for four events in the competition and will compete against swimmers up to 18 years old.

“Brayden is focussed and puts a lot of effort into his training and at each swim meet. He is a bit nervous as he will be competing against some of the best swimmers in his age group from around the country, but proud to be representing Northern Wairoa and Northland at this meet,” said Simons.

Trained by grandfather, Glen Smith, Brayden has been swimming at least four times a week, every week, all yearround to achieve this goal and competed in Northland wide meets once a month to achieve qualifying times. ¢

p The David Saies Fitness Trail in Selwyn Park is nearing completion with a concrete pad being finished and outdoor gym equipment due to arrive within days. The community project, coordinated by the Dargaville Lions, is available for all to use. The trail was named due to the generous donation by David Saies to the Lions. It is a combined project with Kaipara District Council and Sport Northland, for the community, to celebrate the Lions’ centenary last year.

The fitness trail currently has two sites around the park incorporating monkey bars, chin-ups, a climbing wall, parallel bars and balance beams. The third and final site next to the skate park and playground will have outdoor gym equipment installed.

Coastguard advice On March 18, VHF Channel 07 coverage on Kaipara Harbour will be disestablished. Coverage in the area will not be affected, but Channel 07 will no longer be monitored after this date.

Boaties will need to use one of the other existing channels, either Channel 61 or 66, to stay in touch with Coastguard on the Kaipara. As always, in an emergency, use VHF Channel 16.

For 20 years the Mangawhai Walking Weekend has been a popular event for walkers, hikers and trampers, each enjoying the scenic views of ocean, beaches and bushland with old and new friends.

Without the foresight of a dedicated and determined lady in 1999, Jean Goldschmidt, the weekend may not have gained the success and popularity it now enjoys.

The Mangawhai Walking Weekend Charitable Trust was formed in 2015 to assist with track planning, maintenance and building. This team of volunteers continually seek out areas for future tracks and cycleways, making contacts through the local council and Department of Conservation. The local community play a significant role in the weekend,

with around 150 volunteers donating their time each year as enthusiastic guides and assistants, providing a unique experience for walkers to learn more about the local area.

This year visitors can choose between 30 different tracks with varying grades of difficulty, exploring the bush-covered Brynderwyn ranges or meeting new friends on an afternoon ramble around the picturesque estuary loop track.

Visitors to Mangawhai during what has been a long, hot and busy summer will often ask why the main street’s big blue and white second-hand emporium is called the Opportunity Factory.

Aside from the obvious, it’s a massive op-shop situated in what was once a factory-sized auto workshop there’s a deeper story to the name, which tells you a lot about this close-knit seaside community.

The concept of the Opportunity Factory is simple, and it’s one, which is familiar to second-hand shoppers worldwide. Unwanted goods tend to pile up in our homes, and when it’s time to get rid of them, there are plenty of charitable organisations who will gladly accept them, turning them into donations to fund their good works. The concept here, however, has been ‘hyper localised’ for the direct and immediate benefit of the town. Every item donated is tidied up, priced and put on display by a team of volunteers passionate about their town. The dollars from all those bargains tend to mount up. At the

end of 2018, the Opportunity Factory disbursed more than $100,000 to thirty local projects and organisations, all to help make Mangawhai a better place.

That’s not cash from central government or the local council, or even from other events. It’s a combination of three traits, which you’ll find in most every Kiwi town the volunteering community spirit, generosity, and the love of a good bargain.

Bring them together, as the Mangawhai Opportunity Factory Trust have done, and you have the recipe for success. Now they are looking for another round of worthy causes

It’s almost certainly the first and most important discovery of prehistory. Fire changed a group of primitive creatures into the first human society, giving them warmth in the cold, light in the dark, defence from wild animals and cooking to reduce disease. Today fire has been tamed and harnessed for our comfort during winter, and can even reside safely right in the middle of our homes.

It’s an ally that needs careful control and a bit of forward planning. As the cold weather begins to bite on these early autumn mornings, it’s a timely reminder to sort out all the infrastructure, which will keep your fireplace burning all winter safely with minimal fuss. First up comes a chimney sweep, to clear out the soot and cobwebs, as well as unwanted lodgers birds are attracted to chimneys in summer when there’s no choking smoke, and their nests are highly flammable!

Remember that your insurance may insist on a regular chimney sweep to ensure a safe fire. At the same time, a qualified fireplace expert will not just clean the flue, but will also inspect the firebox and fittings for rust, deterioration and wear. Replacing worn parts can seriously extend the life of your fireplace, but if it does need a complete replacement, now is the time to act.

It takes a little while for necessary council permits to come through, and the installation itself takes time, so plan in autumn for a new fireplace in winter.

The other aspect of keeping a fire lit all through the cold months is laying in an ample supply of fuel. It could be combined with another shore, call in a qualified arborist for help chopping back trees, which may pose a danger to the home, sheds or power lines in a storm. A log splitter makes short work of big rounds of timber, while a wood chipper turns the twigs into handy mulch this last item is often something a tree pruning pro brings along with them. It’s also worth noting that battery powered chainsaws have come a long way in recent years, and it may be time to ditch your old, hard to start or rusty petrol saw and step up to a modern alternative.

It’s also the time of year for those without access to their own timber to call firewood suppliers and stack up a good supply. As the season progresses, all that you’ll need to do is split kindling to keep the home fires burning. ¢

Autumn Maintenance Tactics to keep the heat With winter on the way and autumn already delivering cooler mornings, the thoughts of many people are turning toward ways to keep cold and damp out of their homes. When it comes to efficient heating, there are so many options available pellet fires, efficient wood burners, gas, heat pump systems — the choices seem endless.

There’s a passive system of indoor climate control, which works 24/7 with no moving parts. It can work silently at no cost for years in total efficiency, and without it, all the heat in the world will do little good.

We’re talking, of course, about insulation, a topic, that has been discussed in arenas from real estate to politics in recent years, such is its importance to a healthy home. With rules changing for landlords around minimum standards for insulation in rental homes, it makes sound sense as a homeowner to treat your own biggest investment to a healthy upgrade.

Imagine your home as a chilly bin; though instead of ice and cold drinks, it contains the warmth generated by your heat pump or fireplace.

A house with no insulation is more like a cardboard box full of holes no matter the efficiency of your heating;

it’s radiating out into space. At the same time, cold and damp can come creeping in. Insulating the roof is usually the first thing we think of, as heat rises. KAURI COAST SURFCASTING COMPETITION 2019

The west coast of the Kaipara is famous for many things, but world-class fishing is high on the list. The beautiful scenery and wild ocean are a reason not just to visit, but for many of our locals, they are where the motivation to move here for good!

That’s why a fishing contest, which takes place on the surfbeaten shores of the west is something a bit special, and the big one is coming very soon!

Many years ago, the parents and teachers at Kaihu and Aranga put their heads together to come up with a fundraising idea to benefit their small rural schools. They came up with the concept of a surfcasting tourney at Omamari beach, and it’s grown year on year, with a roll call of big winners, massive catches, memorable fishing stories and huge prizes each time. This year the contest takes place on March 30, so it’s time to pick up some tickets from your local fishing store in Dargaville, gear up, grab some mates, and prepare your best long-distance cast to get out into the deep water. Tickets will also be available on the beach on the day.

This year the main prizes are for kahawai, giving all anglers a better chance of winning. Motivation comes from two sources bragging rights as ‘king of the surf’ and pots of cash.

There’s $3,000 cash for first place, $2,000 cash for second and $1,000 cash for third.

Prizes for snapper and trevally are also in the mix, as well as spot prizes to add to the fun. Making this a great family day out, kids under 12 can fish for free. Of course, all the money raised from entries goes to charity.

Government tackles rustling

Pay attention!

New rules to crack down on livestock rustling will come into force following the passing of the Crimes Amendment bill.

“For too long farmers have been urging successive governments to assist in their battle against the scourge of livestock rustling. This coalition government listened, and now we have changed the law,” says Minister of Justice, Andrew Little.

“Farmers and rural communities make a huge contribution to the wellbeing of New Zealand and our economy.

Meanwhile, livestock rustlers have undermined rural people’s livelihoods and their right to be safe in their homes.

“The two new offences send a clear message that this coalition government will not tolerate livestock rustling, whether it is sheep, cattle, beehives, sheepdogs or other animals that are stolen or harmed.

“Today is a new era, where we have finally classified livestock rustling as it should be, as criminal offences in our criminal code.

“Importantly, this step also gives police and the courts the tools they need to rope in the rustlers.

“Federated Farmers estimates the cost of theft of livestock to the farming community at over $120 million every year, and a survey indicates about a quarter of their members had stock stolen in the last five years.” These

crimes are often committed at night in the more remote parts of New Zealand. Smallscale, opportunistic grabs of half a dozen sheep or cows are relatively common, but police and MPI say sophisticated gangs with links to organised crime are increasingly mounting well-planned raids on farms.

Victims of livestock rustling and a survey of more than 1,000 farmers showed almost 60 per cent of thefts had not been reported to police. In one case a one Whanganui farmer lost 1,400 lambs worth about $120,000.
