Kaipara mayor seeks national role u by Paul Campbell
“I will not be seeking re-election as mayor of Kaipara District in the October local body elections, and going forward, the best way I can serve the people of Northland is to seek the National Party candidacy for Northland, which includes all of Kaipara District,” said Dr Jason Smith.

“However, I still have the backs of the Kaipara people. I am not going away, and (parliament) is just the next step. The reform storm being brewed by the government grows. Three Waters, SNAs, RMA and health reforms are among what’s forecast to impact the lives of Northland people and radically alter our democracy.” Dr Smith was the Nor thland representative on the Three Waters panel, and this appears to have been the springboard for his new direction. “I’m disappointed but not surprised that the government has accepted most of the recommendations of the working group on which I was a member,” he said. In an earlier reference, he stated: ”This model of reforms for stormwater, drinking water and wastewater will now absorb all KDC’s drainage districts, including Raupo/Ruawai, which will mean local decision-making for these places will be lost from us. Overall, I regard the proposed government reforms as an insult to democracy. “Going forward, I hope there is a healthy debate to find the best mayoral candidate for the job I have greatly enjoyed in leading Kaipara District. If we had several very good candidates contesting for the mayoral job, it would be great for a healthy democracy.” Nominations for elected members of the council close 10 weeks from now, on August 12. Dr Smith said he was pleased to have led the KDC “out of a very dark period and being able to serve the

Kaipara people and also to lead the Northland Mayoral Forum. “Representing Kaipara people has been a highlight of my life, and I thank everyone, my council colleagues and wider stakeholders for the confidence shown in the journey we’ve all shared since my first election in 2018. My final day as mayor will be at the end of this term on election day on October 8. “It would be wrong to seek at the same time re-election as mayor and risk the cost of a by-election for the Kaipara ratepayers if I were to be successful in the candidate selection proce s s later this year.” Dr Smith contacted the National Party last week to discuss being a candidate and becoming a party member, “hopefully to represent Northland people for a better, more aspirational future.” Dr Smith’s decision means a cascade of leadership in Northland, as well as Auckland.
