 Six generations of descendants of Wakatere and Reremoana Retimana gathered for a reunion at the Naumai marae. Granddaughter Grace LeGros said her grandfather and his siblings lived and worked within the district for many years and grew kumara on the farm in Nau Mai that descendants are still on today. Around 140 people attended the reunion.

The competition was Real Talk’s Brisbane-based ‘Reality Check’ rap battle. Major development plan for Mangawhai

Kaipara residents became New Zealand citizens last Tuesday, at a ceremony for 19 people in the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall.

Initial plans show scope for a town square, secondary school, retirement village, medical centre, supermarket, eateries and residential housing.

Viranda Partners chairman, Andrew Guest said community engagement will be important as would be respecting the unique character and heritage of Mangawhai.

“When the opportunity to be involved in this Mangawhai project was brought to our attention we had no doubt about the potential in the area.

“The catalyst motivating us to proceed was recognising the importance of ensuring that the Mangawhai Central area was not only developed as it was able to be, but that it successfully brought together the different facets of the community — residential, holiday, retirement areas and the different community groups,” he said. He said the facets would be “paramount” to

the project. Mangawhai Business Development Association chairman, Richard Gunson said the association was pleased that someone would be taking on the development of that site.

“It plays a very important part in Mangawhai’s growth and development as a community.

“There is a resource consent that goes with the property which we are happy with and will work with the developers to assist where we can to facilitate it,” he said.

“It’s going to have an impact on economy because they are going to do the best possible to use local contractors and they are actually wanting the project to get underway.

It’s an exciting time.”

While the project remains in the early stages the newly formed mangawhaicentral.co.nz has been set up to detail progress. 

The range of nationalities including the United States, England, Wales, India and South Africa, came from across Kaipara.

Donice Hall-Morris who is originally from Texas said that she was ‘over the moon’ to receive citizenship.

Donice co-owns the Aratapu Hotel and lives on the Pouto peninsula with her husband Richard Morris.

She came to New Zealand 17 years ago to meet Richard’s parents as they were engaged “and fell in love with the place. I intend to retire here, die here,

be buried here — I love this part of the world.”

Kaipara District Council Mayor Greg Gent started off the formalities with a welcoming speech.

“It is an honor at which you can be proud,” he said. “It’s our pleasure and duty to welcome you to this community.

The strength of New Zealand is in small towns and I encourage you all to get involved in the community.”

Each citizen read the oath of allegiance, before watching a welcoming video and singing the national anthem. 

The rush for tickets for this year’s Art’n’Tartan Wearable Art Awards in Waipu, is now on and with a high number of entries, rehearsals for the July 21 and 22 shows are well under way.

 Mangawhai fireman Maurice Doughty was presented his Queen’s Services Medal for services to the New Zealand Fire Service by Governor General, Dame Patsy Reddy in Wellington recently. Mr Doughty has been involved in the fire service for just over 56 years and began his career in Auckland before moving to the Mangawhai Fire Brigade. “It was certainly an honour to receive the medal and we thoroughly enjoyed the day down at Government House — the fire service certainly looked after us which was greatly appreciated,” he said.  Last year’s winner of the Supreme Award, ‘Tartan Flying Machine’ by Richard Wilson

Director Helen Frances, who returns this year after a break has a line-up of entertainers to complement the entrants throughout the show.

“I am really looking forward to the blacklight section Dream Word — Weird and Wonderful. Being a first time for the show, I believe it has potential to offer designers a new challenge and a more

Jayden Randolph an ex-student from Bream Bay College will be stretching his creative skills to impress his local community as he takes on the role of 2017 choreographer. The show is split into three performances. Opening night is on July 21 at 8pm, July 22 features a 2pm matinee followed by the awards night at 8pm at the Waipu Celtic Barn. 

Dargaville Intermediate school is a finalist for the 27th annual Green Ribbon Awards which recognises ‘outstanding contributions by individuals, communities and organisations to protect and manage New Zealand’s environment’.

It is one of three finalists in the ‘Leadership in Communication and Education’ section. Winners are announced on Thursday, June 8.

The nursery was started six years ago by environmental teacher and deputy principal Diane Papworth and school caretaker Dennis Hewetson.

Diane said “I just entered to put our school out there and didn’t realise we’d be a finalist, its pretty cool. All of our efforts are being recognised.”

The nursery has expanded every year and has contributed tens of thousands

of plants to the Kaipara Harbour restoration project. The students, who chose to be part of the school’s ‘Enviro Kaha Club’ say they love it because they like helping the environment and being outdoors.

Student Max Hutchings said that what they plant on field trips stops sand dunes and soil eroding and absorbs runoff on farms and provides shelter for livestock. This year the school had a target to grow 10,000 plants which they have done, making them the only school in New Zealand to produce so many. 

New coach for swim team  by Joanna Manson

The Dargaville special Olympics swimming team is underway with training thanks to new coach, Leesa Andrews.

After a few months without a coach, Greenways team manager, Ros Gilmour said the swimming team welcomes Leesa onboard to “guide our swimmers to achieve their goals.”

Recently swimmer Andy Daly competed at the Bay of Islands T2 swimming event alongside the rest of the team that he will compete with at Nationals in Wellington later this year.

“Andy won a gold medal for 25-metre freestyle, a silver medal for 25-metre backstroke and a silver for the relay. He competed against swimmers from the Bay of Islands, North Harbour, Taranaki, Counties, Howick/Pakuranga, and the Waitakeres,” said Ros. She said the competition was a good opportunity for Andy to become more familiar with his new teammates.

At this stage Andy will be the only representative from Dargaville joining with Whangarei for the combined nationals’ team.

“In preparation Andy is perfecting his flip turns, diving and making sure everything is done correctly. He has also been working on his fitness and conscientiously working on healthy eating.”

The team trains at the Dargaville High School pool on Thursdays from

4.30–5.30pm. They also participate in athletics and football, and attend ‘Ribbon Days’ and other events competing throughout Northland and Auckland during the year.

Matariki celebrations observing the Maori New Year begin this weekend.

Saturday, June 10, the Te Uri o Hau Settlement Trust Matariki Kapahaka Festival is on. Eleven local schools will be performing from 9.30am–3.30pm at Otamatea High School. There will be community group and food stalls.

We are constantly working hard to ensure people working around our lines understand the importance of safety and the correct practices that must be carried out in order to keep them safe.

There are health and safety regulations and codes of practice which must be followed by electricity lines companies, contractors or members of the public.

When working under lines it is imperative to stay outside the Minimum Approach Distance (MAD) of 4m.

When working near overhead lines or power poles it is a legal requirement that you follow the minimum safe distances as set down by New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice – NZECP 34:2001 Electrical Safe Distances. This document is available from www.energysafety.govt.nz All work activity must be kept at least four metres from overhead lines. If you need to work closer to our overhead lines you must get a Close Approach Consent from Northpower which takes two working days to process.

Another important rule is that you cannot dig within five metres of one of our power poles without a Close Approach Consent.

And depending on the depth of excavations, you may need additional pole supports to prevent poles collapsing.

Call Northpower Faults on 0800-10-40-40 and we will advise you of your requirements and will provide supervision in some cases.

You must always check for underground electricity cables before starting excavation.

Dargaville Rotary recently held a ‘thanks function’ which included guest speakers from More FM, and an acknowledgement of the many people who have helped them and the community.

The Mangawhai Zonta Club has announced Jacqueline Busby as the recipient of the 2017 Second Chance Study Award.

The guest speakers for the night were John Markby and Angela ‘Flash’ Gordon from More FM Northland radio, who in conjunction with Rotary donated $400 to the Dargaville Fire Brigade.

Rotary’s annual Citizen’s Award which acknowledges ‘some-one in our community who has selflessly contributed to making it a better place for all of us’ was presented to Ross Newlove.

Ross, a retired sheep and beef farmer, was an officer in the territorial forces for around 17 years, before working with the Dargaville 57 Squadron of the Air Training Corp for 10 years.

He was also a Kaipara district councillor for 12 years from 1989 and was the council’s Taha Awa Riverside Gardens appointee. He has been a Friend of the Gardens Trust and garden labourer since.

His other involvements include Big River FM, Greenways Trust, Northland Agricultural Field Days, Dargaville Museum committee, the local Scout group, being a mentor in literacy and numeracy at Silver Fern Farms, and the Northern Wairoa RSA. “It was most unexpected — but it was certainly an honour to receive it” said Ross. 

This is the second year the award has been offered to any woman residing in the Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto or Bream Bay area who is furthering their educational studies.

“Jacqueline is a most deserving recipient who was chosen from a very competitive slate of candidates after a rigorous selection process.

She is in her second year of nursing studies at NorthTec and is interested in pursuing a career in paramedics,” said club member, Sue Poynter.

The $2,500 included with the award

will be largely used to assist with transport costs to enable her to attend placements and course time in Whangarei.

The award is made possible through fundraising events such as the Zonta midwinter ball.

This year it will be held on July 29 with entertainment provided from the Renegades band, and tickets will be available from Bammas and the Mangawhai Pharmacy.

Some of the biggest chores of the winter season involve tackling timber — from slicing through firewood to cutting back trees which may otherwise pose a hazard during seasonal storms. In order to make short — and safe — work of these tasks, Stihl has been hard at work further refining its saws and safety gear.

It’s a process which the Scandinavian company’s engineers have been at for decades, and each year they manage to find new ways to improve the reliability, ease of use and safety of their core products in the field of chainsaws. For 2017 the range of sizes and options is bigger than ever, with new cutting technology suited to every arena from the backyard to the forest.

Having a large range means it’s easier to choose the right sized saw for any given situation. Part of cutting efficiently and safely is selecting the right sized machine for any given task, and the Stihl range spans the small, firewood friendly MS 170 and MS 180 through to the big Magnum, designed for forestry.

Across the range, the options for ease of operation also abound, with improved technology delivering an easier pull start, tool-free locking and tensioning of the chain itself, and advances in engine mounting to reduce vibration.

Long nights mark shed and garage season  by Andy Bryenton

Winter, for some, means long evenings spent watching entire series on Netflix or Amazon, reading books put aside for the cold weather in front of the fire, or simply tucking up warm and counting the days until spring. But for others it’s a time to light the work lamps and retire to that bastion of winter projects — the shed.

With images of open roads and sunshine in mind, a certain group of people see the cold weeks ahead as a time for greasy hands, the odd skinned knuckle or two, meticulously laid out arrangements of classic screws, washers and pieces of chrome trim, and Haynes workshop manuals fattened by Post-it notes. In short, winter is shed and garage time, a section of the calendar when projects take shape with the aid of thermos flasks full of tea or soup, and activities unthinkable during the long summer evenings — with their BBQs and fishing trips — are finally taken off the back burner.

For many, this will not be the first winter spent stripping and planing, boring and honing, welding and painting. Most of those who succumb to the classic vehicle bug have more than one project on the go, and we know as gospel things which our friends and loved ones shake their heads at in disbelief. There’s only a little more work left to go. It will all come together once those last elusive parts arrive from somewhere overseas, via

the Internet. The sound of that engine coming back to life after years spent in rust and dust will herald the rebirth of a machine that’s worth, well, far more than just a sharp kick of nostalgia and a pile of receipts.

The truth, according to one friend who is a fellow addict of vintage rolling steel, is that a chilly evening spent in the shed, with rain on the roof and a recalcitrant carburetor assembly spread out on the bench, is a kind of meditation. In a very Zen-like fashion, the pursuit of a perfect, showroom-crisp 1970s Ford is less a destination than a journey, and that even when (never if, for the doubters) the object of all that attention finally sits in the summer sun at a beach hop or auto show, there’s always next winter to consider.

That, and the meta-perfection of the shed itself, which always seems to need new tools, new shelves, new cupboards and tin signs advertising that here, in this place, the chaos of the outside world can be made sense of, one patiently rebuilt cylinder at a time. 

Seven years on the riverside

World Smokefree Day marked the launch of Dargaville NorthTec campus going smoke free as they play their part in the government’s Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 campaign.

Every Thursday in Dargaville, from 12–4pm you’ll find the Riverside Produce Markets in the Ad Focus car park.

“I think Thursdays may be the only day that you have trouble finding a car park,” says organiser Debra van Leeuwerden.

The idea for a weekly market in Dargaville originally came from Darlene Lang Gent and Chris Donahoe.

Then one day Debra’s sister-inlaw, who runs a market in Tauranga, suggested that they should start one in their Ad Focus car park.

Now, seven years later, the Riverside Produce Market is still going every week.

“I love that these guys make it themselves and grow it themselves.

I love that we are encouraging little businesses.

“That’s what it’s about. It’s also a great place where people can come sit, eat and catch up with each other.”

The market offers seasonal, fresh,

organic and locally grown fruit and vegetables, baked goods, smoked fish, free range eggs, cheese, honey, plants, crafts and coffee.

Due to only stocking fresh, seasonal and local produce, “the market changes all the time. One week you might have 18 stores, the next week you might have seven,” said Debra. “It is only a small market but it’s really got everything we need.”

“We also have provision for a community stall every week — you can come along and have a stall at no cost if you’re raising money for something.”

Keen market goer and local Sabina comes every week as she loves being able to buy local and organic produce.

She also raves about the Greenway stalls ‘amazing chilli jam’. 

The launch on May 31 was attended

by North Tec staff, students and health organisations Toki Rau and Te Ha Oranga.

Both health organisations were on hand throughout the day offering advice and support to staff and students who may want to quit as well as offering free oral hygiene packs.

Dargaville campus administrator Dene Holyoake said it was a “really good day — the theme was all about whanau.”

Operations Manager for Trades and Primary Industries at NorthTec, Fred Towler said the day was well organised and that there were a “great bunch of people” at the Dargaville campus.

“I believe it’s not just the fact that smoking is unhealthy, I think it’s socially unacceptable now and every year the price gets higher the cost has to be having a detrimental impact on families.

“It’s a good move for NorthTec and we need to be seen leading the government’s ambition to be smokefree by 2025.”

The Dargaville campus has recently welcomed new carpentry tutor Robbie Rollo onboard.

The team are looking forward to the start of Horticulture Level 3 on June 12 and Elementary Construction and Hospitality Level 2 starting on July 24. 
