Pink Shirt Day is a national campaign led by the Mental Health Foundation and aims to celebrate diversity. “We went pink to show our commitment to creating a school environment that is safe, welcoming and inclusive of all students. We take bullying seriously and working towards a school culture that supports and celebrates the diversity of all students, young people can feel safe and supported, and flourish at school,” said teacher, Natalie Lynch. “New Zealand has some of the highest rates of bullying in schools in the world, but there’s no room for it at Matakohe School.”

A Kaipara farmer made a grisly discovery when he returned from a holiday last week to discover one of his steers had been slaughtered and butchered on-site.

We are hoping people in the community will submit positively. Based on the submissions made the trust will decide whether to proceed or not with the building.”

Kaipara District Council spokesperson, Ben Hope, says there has been a lot of back and forth between the building team and the community about the project.

“There were requests for further information to comply with building code, around Northland Regional Council guidelines for flooding, and our building team met with a few members

to discuss the ins and outs of those NRC guidelines.

“This [building] application came in through our online portal on November 7, 2017, and was issued on April 19, 2018.”

The centre will include garaging facilities for surf life saving equipment, a first aid room and a selfcontained apartment.

The Baylys Beach Community Trust is made up of Graeme Ramsey as chair, Amanda Matich as secretary, Dr Michael Hogan, Grant Suckling and Paula Powell. ¢

Bruce Clare who has a farm in the Kai Iwi Lakes area was shifting stock and found one of his steers, worth $2,000, had been slaughtered with one hind leg missing along with the back steaks.

The matter was reported to the police last week, and they are currently investigating the incident.

“I think [the perpetrator] must have been on a quad bike otherwise they would have taken the whole thing,” Mr Clare said.

“The paddock gate was locked so they must have parked, shot the animal and taken what they could carry.”

Police advise the community to be wary of anyone who may appear to be behaving suspiciously and report any unusual behaviour immediately.

A police spokesperson said there had been no other reports of incidents of this nature in the Dargaville area in the last month; however, Mr Clare says he has heard of other incidents via word of mouth.

World Smokefree Day was celebrated at NorthTec last week on the first anniversary of its smoke-free policy, with support from More FM, Te Ha Oranga and local musician Vera Rapana.

What’s large, green and heard before it is seen? It’s the New Zealand Kaka — and there have been multiple reports of sightings around Kaipara.

NorthTec instigated its policy last year as part of the government’s Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 campaign.

Regional manager for Forest and Bird, Nick Beveridge, says sightings are not unusual in the Kaipara at this time of year.

“This is their non-breeding time, and they often travel over from Great Barrier and Little Barrier Island to the mainland in winter to search for food.

“There have been quite a lot of sightings as far south as Auckland as well.”

Mr Beveridge says if people do see Kaka feeding to make sure they can do so in peace by keeping dogs and potentially threatening pets or pests under control.

The Ministries of Health and Education are encouraging schools to adopt healthy drink policies and consider banning sugary drinks to provide water and milk only, and in the Kaipara District, the message is being heard.

Matthew Williams was awarded the Young Building Control Officer of the year award, which is presented to a BCO under 35 years old who has shown growth and passion in the industry.

Branch of the Year was awarded to the Northland branch, which Kaipara BCO, Jamie Nikora, accepted in his role as chairman. This is Jamie’s second year as a winner, after being awarded the Emerging Leaders’ title last year.

“This is a fantastic achievement. The hard work, innovative enhancement of our systems, customer service ethos and dedication to building within Kaipara and New Zealand is worthy of these acknowledgements,” said general

manager of Regulatory, Planning and Policy, Fran Mikulicic.

“Kaipara Building Control Authority has been very fortunate to acquire the valuable services of both Jamie Nikora and Matthew Williams. Both these building officers carry out their work with enthusiasm, energy and very helpful attitude. They have responded well to the training given in complex building regulations and apply this with a sense of service. It is very pleasing that the well-respected National Building Officials Institute has recognised this and we are proud they are part of our team,” said building control manager, Ian McCauley. ¢

In a recent survey of schools in the area, two had a complete ban on sugary drinks, and thirteen worked with a formal policy of encouraging water only and educating students about the effects of too much sugar in their diet. One school provided a water cooler for students to refill water bottles throughout the day.

Kindergartens taking part in the survey had a strict policy of removing drinks other than water from lunchboxes to be returned to parents at the end of the day.

Once a year a cluster of stars known as the Pleiades rises, signalling the start of the Maori new year and to celebrate, the community will gather for the annual Te Wairua o Matariki/Spirit Of Matariki festival at Selwyn Park in Dargaville.

Network News Sailing Winners It was a case of fourth time lucky after Taipa Area School was crowned winner of the 2018 ‘Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge’.

Kristy Buchanan and Prairie Herk teamed up to take out the title and say the voyage has provided memories that will live with them forever.

The five-day voyage is in its ninth year and pits teams of two students from six Northland high schools against each other.

But it’s not just about sailing. Students are judged on safety, leadership, cooking, daily challenges, team work and more.

The 2018 voyage also saw Whangarei Girls High, Dargaville High and Pompallier Catholic College (all Northpower sponsored), Kerikeri High School and Kaitaia College take part.

Students sailed from Opua to Whangarei’s Port Nikau, taking in Northland’s beautiful east coast – rounding Piercy Island (the Hole in the Rock) and dropping in at Mimiwhangata, Poor Knights and Urquharts Bay along the way.

This free community event will include a market, an open stage, workshops, food stalls, a circus performance by the Kumarani youth group and the muchanticipated fire show put on by Kumarani Productions alongside Te Kopuru Primary School Kapa Haka group.

Kumarani Productions manager, Abbe Clark, says she is ‘really excited’ about working with the Te Kopuru Kapa Haka group for the first time this year.

“It’s going to be an awesome fire show.

“It’s a little bit different and something that we’ve wanted to do for a while.

Fire poi originated from the Maori poi spinning so it will be great to incorporate that in with this group.”

There will be a dedicated art space where the community can get creative and a competition for children to bring along their pictures about what Matariki means to them and be in to win prizes.

People are also encouraged to bring along their own T-shirt and get a Te

Work to upgrade the popular walking spot known as the Nikau Grove pathway in Maungaturoto is under way and efforts to protect the resident Kauri trees are being made.

The heat was on at the recent Chilli Chompers Global Hot Sauce Awards, which saw two Kaipara-based chilli sauce brands set taste buds alight for the people’s choice awards.

The pathway, a Rotary project from about 25 years ago, is being cleared by a team of eight Maungaturoto Rotarians and two Duke of Edinburgh students from Otamatea High School.

“We hope the grove will continue to provide a beautiful place to walk with children amongst native trees and birds,” said Rotarian, Stella Clyde.

The team have been spreading gravel on the wet and muddy areas and plan on making a boardwalk by the Kauri trees to minimise the spread of Kauri Dieback disease. They will also build a

small wooden bridge over the stream.

“While it is a clearly defined pathway, it does tend to get overgrown. We are very fortunate to have such scenic areas that we can access within our township, and it is great that we have young people in our community who are willing to help with the upgrades.

“Gravel was donated by Atlas Quarries, which was a very generous help and Barn Builders have donated timber for the boardwalk.” The grove is situated on public land on Whaka Street next to the Presbyterian Church. ¢

The Dargaville community will join other towns in Kaipara when building students at NorthTec complete construction of a cropswap stand destined for Gladstone Street outside Ideal Demo and monitored by the staff there.

The theme for the display this year is Nga Ika o Otamatea. Each participating school has been given one fish, which is common in their area and asked to interpret the subject in any manner they wish.

“Matariki is a perfect time to push pause and take time to reflect on the year behind as well as the year ahead.

Join us to welcome the change in season and celebrate new beginnings,” says Kauri Museum CEO, Lisa Tolich.

To mark the opening on the first day of Matariki, June 15, Bernard Makoare will demonstrate the making and playing of traditional Maori musical instruments, taonga puoro, followed by a preview of

the exhibition. The afternoon will be dedicated to kapa haka performance before students return to school.

The museum will also be holding a raranga flax weaving workshop. There are two workshops scheduled, the first held over a weekend and then a later, mid-week course.

These will be tutored by Whaea Geraldine Jenkins; participants will learn the correct protocols for harvesting harakeke, preparation of the fibre and then weave their own kete to pass on to someone special. Bookings are essential for the workshops.

Students from schools from the Far North to Otago, including three from Kaipara, were rewarded with a Poor Knights snorkel experience in the 17th annual Experiencing Marine Reserves trip.

The search is on for New Zealand’s most beautiful town, and Kaipara townships can now throw their hat in the ring for the title.

p Kaipara towns have the chance to be recognised as the most beautiful town in the 2018 Beautiful Awards organised by Keep New Zealand Beautiful p Kaipara District students and supporters that attended the trip

The group was made up of 32 representative students from each school taking part along with 31 parents and 11 supporters.

On board, the vessel, Perfect Day, the snorkel site was at the Blue Maomao Arch, named in the top ten for dive sites around the world by Jacque Cousteau, where the visitors viewed the marine biodiversity along the walls. This snorkel site at the Poor Knights Islands marine reserve has been protected by no-take status since 1981.

Students were selected based on projects under taken and enthusiasm shown when studying and experiencing the marine environment.

“My favourite thing was snorkelling

and kayaking,” said Ruawai student, Koaria Bristow.

“The best part of the trip would have been going into Rikoriko, the largest sea cave in the world, seeing the moss stuck to the ceiling of the cave, and hearing how loud the echoes were,” said Dargaville Intermediate School student, Danielle Norman.

“Going on the boat ride,” said Te Kopuru School student, Katie Nelson, about her trip.

It impacts health in many ways, across age groups from the very young to the elderly. It fills doctors’ clinics and hospital beds.

Moreover, there’s the very real threat that it also adds to the death toll from seasonal, preventable illnesses. The new rules around rental homes seek to guarantee two of the basic requirements for a healthy home — good insulation and a reliable heating source.

Rental homes, here, covers a broader range of dwellings than may be expected. As well as the traditional tenant-landlord relationship, the rules are set to cover rural properties occupied by such farm staff as share milkers, for example. Boarding houses and other halls of residence are also included. This has clear implications for

investment property owners, but there’s a deeper message for all homeowners.

If the law has had to be changed to address the issue, and some medical professionals consider the after-effects of amphetamine use in a home are less damaging than contaminants like black mould, then we all should pay attention.

The new regulations stipulate insulation in the ceiling, and underfloor if possible, both to a standard, which will create a warmer, drier environment indoors.

Already, a year out, insulation professionals and heating installers are feeling the added demand. This is a watershed season — the last winter before the rules are changed.

With the possibility of special interestfree terms, and subsidies able to be accessed, those who have previously ‘toughed it out’ are looking at their options. Insulation materials are in visibly short supply on hardware store shelves as some turn to DIY, but for

tricky spaces and for those without the physical stamina to crawl under houses and into tight ceilings, calling in the professionals is the number one option. The call from industry insiders is clear — talk to them now, and avoid the rush. A year is not a long time in the trades, and being caught out is not an option. An installation this winter will provide a shakedown and prove that the solution has worked, sealing in warmth and saving heating costs.

Heating is another part of the puzzle, and here the options are more diverse. Fireplaces, heat pumps, flued gas fires, pellet heaters — there are many ways to say goodbye to inefficient electric heaters of the old design. With efficiency as a core objective, many fireplace users have successfully installed heat transfer systems to even out the heat through their entire home. Leaks, drips, draughts and other weathertightness issues must inevitably also be addressed, and here, especially in the roofing trade, we see a real sense of urgency — large-scale roofing projects cannot be completed in the winter rain, so a narrow window of opportunity next

summer is filling up fast. What will this mean for landlords and farmers who own staff accommodation come July 2019? First off, achieving the new standards is paramount. There is little clarity as to how these will be measured as yet, but having reliable figures from a professional insulation installer, for example, on the quality and thermal properties of the product they have applied is a matter of good foresight.

Keeping those standards will likely mean having tradespeople ready to address any drips, cracks or draughts which develop — a key reason why many private landlords are turning to professional property management services which can assure fast repairs.

The very real threat is that Landlords will be prosecuted by agencies like the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment for breaking new tenancy regulations. Tenants will also be able to take their concerns to the Tenancy Tribunal without fear of retaliatory eviction under the new law — and it’s when courts begin to hand down punishments and set precedents that the rules will show their mettle.

There’s something special about a proper roast dinner when it’s cold outside. With so many flavours, from caramelised onion through to crispy crackling, a pork roast is a local classic — and it’s made even better with the addition of sides like watercress and spiced apple sauce.

There’s a lot of debate about how to create the perfect pork roast, but by following a simple recipe that’s remained unchanged (apart from the electric oven) since medieval times, even a novice can create a right royal banquet that will warm up the whole family. Not to mention providing leftovers for the next day’s lunch!

You will need — 1.35kg loin of Pork, preferably free-range — larger joints are also fine, the cooking time is adjustable as we will discuss later.

Four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Coarse sea salt. One red onion. One teaspoon of butter, chilled. A sprig of rosemary. One glass of white cooking wine. 500ml of veggie stock.

Bring the pork to room temperature, and slash the skin with a craft knife or scalpel — a very sharp blade is needed.

Don’t go all the way through to the meat.

Now massage in olive oil and salt. Those seeking a fiery taste could add cayenne pepper or a cajun rub at this point. Place the pork skin side up in a roasting pan

The calculation for cooking time is easy — 25 minutes plus a further 25 minutes per every 450 grams of pork. Our 1.35kg example takes one hour and 40 minutes. Some chefs like to ‘smash’ the crackling and add crunchy pieces to the carved meat before smothering it in onion gravy. Team up your roast with kumara, pumpkin,

Method: Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the 1 tbps oil onion, bacon and 1 onion, peeled and chopped kumara. Saute 4 - 5 minutes 2 rashers lean bacon, finely diced or until the bacon is browned and the onion is transparent.

2 small kumara (400g), peeled Add the water and and diced simmer gently for 15 - 20 minutes or until the kumara 3 cups water is softened. Mash with a potato masher to break up the 1 cup milk kumara pieces. Add the milk and mint. Gently reheat until 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh mint warmed through.
