The Northland Emergency Services Trust rescue helicopter has flown in to test the new landing site at Ruawai College which will give it a stable landing base to cover operations in the Kaipara district.

The new helipad will provide an accessible and solid platform for the chopper to operate from, and includes lighting and communications for a 24/7 service. NEST chief executive and chief pilot Peter Turnbull says the facility will make a big difference to the community. “So many have used the service before and it belongs to the people of Northland,” he said. Mr Turnbull and NEST captain and operations manager Dean Volkerling
flew one of the three rescue helicopters from Whangarei to the site, landing just after noon on Monday. Costing just under $18,000, the helipad is a result of community support, local business sponsorship and $6,000 from the Ruawai Lions Club. “The helipad demonstrates the incredible sense of community in Ruawai,” said Ruawai College principal Glynis Woodhead. The location was chosen because of its easy access to the road and the
school gym’s potential to be used as a casualty clearing station in the case of a major incident. The landing site consists of an eight metre square concrete helipad with a highlighted landing zone. This connects to the existing tar sealed car park, providing easy access for ambulances and emergency vehicles. The site also has floodlighting and a location beacon along with an automatic system which approaching helicopter crews can activate by remote control in night operations.
