Attitude TV travelled to Dargaville to share his story as part of their long-running inspirational series of New Zealand short factual films.

Attitude is a long-running Kiwi television series documenting the successes of people living with being differently-abled.

It’s followed our sporting champions to the Special Olympics, interviewed the Wheel Blacks, and also won awards for promoting inclusion and empowerment.

Running since 2005 the series has provided an insight into the courage and determination of many Kiwis who have overcome great obstacles to achieve life satisfaction and success.

Mr Edgar and his mum, Gaynor, welcomed a three-person film crew into their Dargaville home to help chronicle his achievements, which stack up as

an impressive CV. Many locals will know of his skill on the piano keys, as he’s been a regular sight busking on the main street, outside Countdown or performing in variety concerts during the years. Gaynor adopted Ming Ming from his original homeland of China at the age of seven. He has lived in Dargaville ever since, taking full opportunity of the outdoors and cultural life of the town.

A talented artist, his works have graced exhibitions at Dargaville’s Muddy Waters Gallery. On the opening of his first solo exhibition in 2019, aptly titled My View of the World, he was typically humble and humorous.

Additionally, Ming Ming participates in a list of sporting codes, which includes rugby, hockey, discus, shot put, running, swimming and long jump, not to mention primary passions for cricket and powerlifting.

When asked if it was hard to balance all of these interests, Mr Edgar was adamant that there’s always time to learn and experience more. As for being on television; the hardest part was not being shy of the camera, but working with the crew on a frosty winter morning.

The completed documentary will screen in August after editing. It will also be featured online at attitudelive. com alongside an archive of other inspirational stories from around the nation. ¢

Consultation on wharf rebuild u by Liz Clark

The rebuilding of Mangawhai’s historic wharf is one step closer after the Northland Regional Council notified the resource consent application is open for public consultation.

“Getting this far has been a long and expensive process,” said Mangawhai Historic Wharf Trust chair, Colin Leach.

“The key reason the trust was set up to build the wharf was the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community.

At this stage in the process, anyone can make a submission, whether it is for or against the wharf. Demonstrating community support is essential to success.”

The resource consent application was lodged by the trust last April.

It proposes to reinstate the former Mangawhai wharf that was built in the early 1880s and later demolished during the 1950s.

The NRC says the project “will consist of a piled timber wharf structure extending 101 metres into the coastal marine area. An elevated three-metre

wide walkway, 90m in length, leads to the head of the wharf.”

“Mangawhai is a rapidly growing community, with limited amenities and access to the harbour. The wharf will integrate well into our walking and cycleways, provide a link to the water and can be a valuable educational tool for promoting the wellbeing and understanding of the harbour and all of its inhabitants,” Mr Leach said.

“In completing your submission, you should think about what the rebuild of the wharf would mean for you, your family, the organisations you are part of, and for our community as a whole.” Submissions close on Tuesday, June 23. Council approves local relief package u by Paul Campbell

Kaipara businesses, community and sporting groups that have been struggling as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown are invited to apply for a share of a $640,000 support fund approved by Kaipara District Council.

The fund will not be dispersed in cash, but will offset licence fees, rates and lease costs.

Mayor Jason Smith says the first face-to-face council meeting since the lockdown levels began was unanimous in approving the funds, which will come out of its current budget with no impact on the reduced rates already announced.

Council’s manager of sustainable growth and investment, Sue Davidson, says the most vulnerable businesses were in the construction, hospitality and retail sectors.

“The Kaipara Mayor’s Taskforce for Economic Support and Recovery heard from 437 Kaipara businesses and residents that said support would be helpful at this time.

“We’re trying to make it easier for businesses to open up again and get operating,” said Ms Davidson. “We can’t offer cash, but we can help reduce some of their council-related

business expenses.” Businesses in the hospitality industry, or that require health, food or alcohol licences to operate, could be eligible for a hardship grant of up to $1,500 to be applied against their licence fees. Many businesses could also be eligible for a grant of up to $500, to be offset against their rates.

The package also extends to community and sports groups and camping grounds on council land, which could be eligible for a grant to offset their rates or council leases.

Some feedback received suggested the package be extended to individuals that are struggling.

“We rely on people to pay their rates where they can but, as a reminder, if individuals or businesses are struggling and call us, we can discuss options for a payment plan.”

Iwi launch anti-tip petition u by Paul Campbell

With submissions on the proposed Dome Valley tip for Auckland’s rubbish now closed, Ngati Whatua is seeking national support from “all iwi and tribal partners” for a petition to halt Auckland Council negotiations with Waste Management Ltd. The company is seeking approval from Auckland Council to create the megalandfill within 1,000 hectares of land it has acquired in Dome Valley. Ngati Whatua CEO Alan Riwaki has thrown his iwi’s weight behind the Fight the Tip protest group, which has opposed the plan since its first notification.

“We ask the council to halt all discussions with Waste Management NZ and as a Treaty partner provide our iwi the opportunity to co-create a partnership that will assist our communities to manage waste in a way that puts our community at the centre of decision-making,” he said.

“We did not expect that Ngati Whatua would be the subject of further injustices when we signed our Treaty settlement with the Crown, less than 10 years ago.

We filed our submission against the proposed Dome Valley landfill. Many of our whanau and hapu have also filed submissions objecting to the plan.

“Auckland Council’s failure to consult exacerbates the grievances already held about our whenua, awa and culture.

We are staunch in our opposition to this landfill, which not only pollutes our waterways but encroaches on our responsibilities as mana whenua.”

“We are flummoxed that Auckland Council can consider approving the landfill, which will operate until 2060 at the same time as saying it has an aspirational goal of zero waste to landfill by 2040. However, they appear determined to proceed with approving the landfill.”

The Kaipara District Council has developed an important guide to inform future planning, infrastructure, financial and economic strategies for the district, with the aim of supporting sustainable development and managing growth in these areas.

It’s the KDC’s first Spatial Plan for Key Urban Areas, setting a road map for how our living, working and shopping centres should grow in the years to come. With rapid expansion of the Kaipara population (up to 20% per annum), it’s important to have a ‘big picture’ plan to oversee long-term, positive growth with all the infrastructure needed to make it a success.

Following several rounds of community and Mana Whenua consultation, Kaipara District Council has adopted a Spatial Plan for Dargaville, Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka, and will begin public consultation for the Draft Mangawhai Spatial Plan soon. Mayor Dr Jason Smith says this is planning of a shape, size and scale never undertaken before in Kaipara District.

“This is what has been needed for a long time, and has extra relevance especially as we plan and pursue our recovery from the

impact of the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Mayor Smith. “The Spatial Plan is an important first step to how we encourage the towns of Dargaville, Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka to enter a new chapter in their history.”

Once the country moves to Covid-19 level one, public consultation for the Draft Spatial Plan for Mangawhai will begin.

The aim is to provide for a more sustainable approach to development in Mangawhai while protecting its coastal village identity, rural productivity, biodiversity, coastal and estuarine natural resources. Public consultation will clarify the council’s vision for Mangawhai’s future; details on having your say are available on the KDC website.

“Planning now for the future of Mangawhai is, therefore, a key consideration for how we can help keep the district progressing for current as well as future Kaipara residents,” says Mayor Smith.

Applications are now open to businesses, community groups and sporting groups for grants to help offset some of their council-related expenses.

Businesses in the hospitality industry, or those that require health, food or liquor licences to operate, could be eligible for a hardship grant of up to $1,500. These will be applied against their licence fees as they come due.

Many businesses could also be eligible for grants to offset up to $500 on their rates. If you are in leased premises you can talk to your landlord about applying for a grant on your behalf and passing it on.

Organisations may also apply for a grant of up to $1000 for professional advice. This may be from an accountant, business mentor, human resource advisor or other professional to help them improve their operations, or resolve issues resulting from the business shutdown.

Kaipara Wharves Thanks to everyone who submitted feedback for the recent Kaipara Wharves consultation. We had more than 120 formal submissions from individuals and organisations, and the feedback has been incorporated into the Feasibility Study and Programme Business case which has now been finalised and submitted to MBIE. Recently we received notification from MBIE that the business case has been approved and the Council can now start detailed planning on the specific projects. The Kaipara Wharves project is one of four projects under the Kaipara Kickstart umbrella programme, funded by the Provincial Growth Fund.

Dargaville Combined Churches Foodbank is looking forward to a funding boost with the release of the autobiography of a founding member of the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, and veteran farmer, Bruce Galloway.

The second annual Environmental Awards, which have been delayed by the Covid-19 lockdown are to go ahead in a scaleddown fashion, according to the Northland Regional Council, which says it’s “determined to recognise Northlanders’ valuable environmental work.”

Bruce will launch his fascinating look into seven decades of life on 11 farms across the North Island. He will donate $5, for each copy sold, to the food bank to help families affected particularly by the Covid-19 lockdown.

For the past few weeks, we’ve taken the time to present a few good cases for shopping local and supporting local businesses, during this unprecedented time of social upheaval and change.

All of them have hinged on the benefits to your local town and region of spending with local stores, keeping the engines of the local economy fueled and firing on all cylinders.

There’s another very good reason to support your locals, and that’s experience — both the experience inherent in our small-town business owners and the experience of shopping p Dargaville Township with them. This is not a doom and gloom message.

We have had enough of those to last us a generation. Rather, it is a message of hope and optimism that we can all work on together in Kaipara.

I have been reading some figures about regions such as Kaipara, and they give me cause for hope.

Something like 27 per cent of Kaipara’s gross domestic product (GDP) comes from the primary (agricultural) sector. The good news is that, according to Infometrics, this is the one sector that is holding up well in the face of the domestic and global downturns. Infometrics say that dairy and fruit exports remain above 2019 levels and they expect food exports to remain robust.

After all, the world needs to eat, Covid or no Covid.

So, there is good news there for the food producer that is Kaipara.

However, we need to do more if we are going to come out of this mess in the best shape we can.

We need to look at the broader community—our retailers, our tradespeople, our service sector. They are going to need all the help they can get. The short-term measures instigated by the government do help, but they are what they are — short

term. There seems to be no actual plan for post-Covid recovery, or dare I say it — post-election survival.

In Kaipara’s case, I believe we have a strong local government administration under Mayor Jason Smith, and that will help. We also have fortitude and resilience in the community that will help us as well.

Moreover, we need to get government help. In Kaipara, about 18 per cent of our GDP comes from the manufacturing sector, most of them small to medium enterprises (SMEs) — they are the ones that will hurt most. They are the ones that need the government to step up to the plate. It is no coincidence that the new leader of the National Party has elevated SMEs as his personal priority. That he was also our spokesperson for agriculture means he is uniquely positioned to understand and to lead Kaipara to recovery.

There is light at the end of this tunnel in the form and future of Todd Muller.

Fundraisers back in business u by Paul Campbell

Fundraising is moving forward at pace after Maungaturoto’s The Den second-hand emporium closed its doors during lockdown levels four and three, with turnover exceeding expectations and organiser Albie Paton and his team planning allocations to local charities.

“The Den has provided many thousands of dollars for the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust dementia unit, and with work delayed by the lockdown getting back underway soon with the raising of the walls on-site, we are looking to help out around town as well,” said Mr Paton.

Once people got out and about again, here in Bickerstaffe Road we have been as busy as ever, probably folk simply getting out of cabin fever, and fortunately we’ve had some great donated items

to attract their attention.” While the venture will still add to the dementia unit funds, several specific events towards the Riverview Rest Home project are in the planning stage to ensure the $3.9 million building is well provided for.

“Meantime, we are always on the lookout for saleable goods, clean and tidy furniture, beds in good condition but please, no old TVs or computer equipment, which just needs to be disposed of,” Mr Paton said. ¢

Few lower acts could be imagined, but what perplexes the Hospice Shop’s management is the futile nature of the crime. Firstly, clearly labelled and visible CCTV cameras caught the perpetrators in the act, and police are following up armed with video footage. Secondly, the black plastic bags, which were torn apart by the thieves, were full of nothing but rubbish. Discarded items too damaged or worn to be resold via the popular charity shop.

Jenni says that the main concern is the hours of volunteer time it takes to clean up after such an intrusion, and the effect it has on the morale of staff. Ironically, plans are afoot at the Hospice Shop to provide a ‘free’

section to redistribute goods that are donated but are not, for various reasons, suitable to resell. Those in genuine need would rarely be refused.

Dargaville’s CCTV network, comprising both private and civic cameras, is extensive enough to capture images of opportunistic criminals no matter where they strike, and in the past it has been instrumental in the apprehension of many wrongdoers. The exceptionally heartless nature of this latest theft aside, the message from the town’s business owners and the police is clear. Don’t expect to get away with antisocial behaviour in Dargaville — you will be caught on camera before being apprehended by the law. ¢

What do the Farmall tractor, the classic US muscle car, Le Creuset cookware, the coke bottle, NASA’s Skylab space station and the pop-up toaster have in common? They, and a bewildering list of other things, were all designed by the same man. Raymond Loewy might just be the most famous man you’ve never heard of, and his legacy literally defines how the modern world looks.

Born in France in 1893, by 1908 he’d already designed an awardwinning aeroplane. Moving to the USA, he took a job as a window scene designer for large department stores like Macy’s. However, his true calling was in industrial design. By the end of the 1930s, he was responsible for modernising the tractor into the shape we know today, inventing the shape of the refrigerator that we recognise, and streamlining steam locomotives into art deco monsters. He then pressed on with the pop-up toaster, the famous HarleyDavison ‘knucklehead’ motorbike, the Schick electric razor, the rotary floor polisher, the Sunbeam kitchen mixer and the Greyhound bus.

It seemed that he was working up to his best. Raymond gave us the classic ‘curvy’ coke bottle in the 50s, along with the aforementioned Le Creuset cookware. He was also called on to design cars such as the Sunbeam Alpine and Hillman Minx. Nevertheless, it was the coke bottle itself that inspired his work on the Studebaker Avanti, and hence, a whole generation of curvy
