p The skies above Dargaville’s Memorial Park glowed in the dark earlier this month as Circus Kumarani put on a fire show to mark Matariki, the Maori New Year. Young and old came along to enjoy a spectacular light show in superb conditions. Even the counter-attraction of an All Blacks test on TV failed to keep away the crowds who left in awe at the artistry and professionalism of the Kumarani team of fire artists, acrobats and support crew who put the event together. The accomplished athlete’s combined lift of 375kg included a 130kg squat, 90kg bench press and 155kg deadlift in the 74 kg open class and this latest win comes after a succession of similar feats over the last eight years. What makes Ming Ming’s achievements even
more impressive, is that he is blind and, abandoned at birth, he lived in a Chinese orphanage for his first seven years before being adopted by his New Zealand mother, Gaynor. “He improves every year and he is very committed,” said Gaynor.
“He keeps training and doesn’t give up.” Now 24, Ming Ming started going to the gym when he was 16 and was soon lifting weights. “He started competing almost from the onset and he’s always been successful in his classes.” continued on page 5 …
