“The rebranding is purely for clarity,” says the Dargaville Medical Centre’s Dr Scott Davidson. “No existing services are being reduced — quite the opposite. Dargaville Medical Centre and Health NZ have been working to form a new collaborative model that expands the current walk-in services offered, extending evening hours to 8.30pm seven days a week. It’s definitely something to celebrate.” No service existing at the hospital before the announcement of this new, additional clinic has been lost, says Kaipara Community Health Trust CEO Debbie Evans. “I was shocked to read about it in other media — as locals, we never wish to read those words. The KCHT has been assured that we are not losing our 12-bed general ward in Dargaville — it continues to be active.
“If people require additional tests, scanning etc, they are transferred to either Whangārei or Auckland, where the specialist equipment and specialist staff are based. This has been the case for many years. We are grateful to have all these options available to us,” Ms Evans said. “We have recruited more people to operate the X-ray service after hours and on weekends, and this should be operational by mid-July,” says Mr Pimm. Recruitment is also now active for more staff, including specialist paramedics to ensure that all patients are swiftly assessed and, once again, those wait times are greatly minimised. The Dargaville Illness and Injury Facility is now under construction next to the Dargaville Medical Centre. Currently, it’s operational, but running from another entrance near the hospital. ¢

Following speeches by council, government and medical organisation dignitaries on Sunday, June 14, Health New Zealand spokesman Alex Pimm announced that a new Dargaville Illness and Injury Facility would be opening the very next day — not replacing the hospital but sitting next to the Dargaville Medical Centre and its team of GPs. It’s a no-appointment-necessary centre with doctors, nurses and allied health staff available from 8am until 8.30pm every day. Once again, health officials reiterate that this does not replace the Dargaville Hospital, and does not change how emergency cases are dealt with in Dargaville. Rumours of much higher costs at this new clinic have also been refuted. “It will be the same fee to be seen at the new clinic as it is to see a GP at the Dargaville Medical Centre, at any time the new clinic is open,” said Alex Pimm. “What we are trying to do is free up GP appointments with shorter wait times.” This indicates a substantial saving for patients, as after-hour call-out fees for GPs have traditionally been higher than those for daytime appointments. It’s stated that the new clinic will see children under the age of 14 free of charge, and provide discounts for seniors, too. At Sunday’s event the term, Health Hub, was used to refer to the whole Awakino Road complex — the hospital, Te Whatu Ora, Hospice Kaipara, the Dargaville Medical Centre, addiction services, mental health, and now, an additional clinic similar to the emergency and afterhours GPs found in main centres.
