We decided to donate the money earned from the day towards the Blue Light charity because we appreciate their goals to reduce the incidence of young people becoming an offender or victim of crime. A protest march to the steps of the Auckland Council is planned for July 17 to demonstrate opposition to the proposed landfill for the city’s rubbish in the Dome Valley and possible pollution of the Kaipara Harbour.

The march, or hikoi, follows a new campaign by Ngati Whatua iwi in support of the Fight the Tip movement centred in the Dome Valley, which first launched opposition to the landfill.

Auckland Waste Management Ltd, a Chinese-owned company, seeks resource consent for the tip on 1,000 hectares of land, which forms part of the catchment for the Hoteo River that flows into the harbour. There are widespread fears that a breach of the tip could be devastating for the harbour and marine life.

Ngati Whatua CEO Alan Riwaka confirmed the march will take place and says the iwi seeks participants from the wider public as part of a spreading campaign against the tip, and new landfills anywhere in New Zealand.

“We are having a positive response from around the country, and we are as pleased with this as we can be,” he said. Further details of the march will be announced soon. As well as the march, the iwi is holding a series of hui, public meetings, all from 6pm to 8pm in the war memorial halls in Dargaville on Wednesday, June 17 and Helensville on Wednesday, July 1, as well as Wellsford Community Centre on Tuesday, June 23. Ngati Whatua and Te Ha o Te Oranga will also provide staff with laptops to help people make submissions at each hui.

Auckland Council earlier agreed to extend a submissions window by three weeks, after protests because its earlier call was covered by the Covid level four and level three lockdown. ¢

Miriam and Lillian Borger from Paparoa have been running to help raise funds for the Tear Fund charity in support of the Poverty Cycle project.

“The girls ran 219 kilometres, which is the length of Myanmar to Thailand, to help raise awareness and combat human trafficking and exploitation,” says mum Rebecca.

“The area is the most used slave trafficking route in the world. Lillian and Miriam ran the full distance in just over a week raising $1,858,00.

The money raised goes towards supporting the Tearfund Poverty Cycle project both here in New Zealand and internationally.

“The Tearfund Modern Slavery cause combats human trafficking and exploitation through five partners in five countries — Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Fiji. Trafficking is the process by which someone becomes exploited, and slavery is the situation of exploitation they cannot refuse or leave.

“There are 4.8 million victims forced into commercial sexual exploitation.

That is approximately the population of New Zealand, and Tearfund works across the spectrum in prevention, prosecution and rehabilitation.

“If a child is recruited with the intention of exploitation — this is automatically classed as trafficking regardless of whether coercion is used or not.

“We are very thankful to the local community for their help and encouragement. People we don’t even know supported the girls in their efforts. We are very proud of what they have accomplished in helping others.”

A project to clear destructive wilding pines is also providing career opportunities for at-risk youth with invasive species, a major problem for the Taharoa Domain at Kai Iwi Lakes.

Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and local iwi are working together on the project, along with Northland company RecruitMe NZ. Since the Covid-19 response level two arrived in late May, six young people have worked full-time clearing 50 hectares of the pest trees after completing a 16-week training programme, in safe handling of machinery to chemical use, mapping and tree classification.

RecruitMe NZ operations support worker, Matiu Tane, says the company provides a pathway to a profession in forestry contracting and operations, for keen young people who are willing to ‘live clean’ of alcohol and drugs.

“All I see in my people is tremendous potential. We want to offer solutions and hope to our people rather than going on about what’s wrong.”

Northland Regional Council chair Penny Smart says wilding pines are the “right tree in the wrong place”.

They don’t belong in Northland habitats such as wetlands, gumlands or among coastal pohutukawa.

Taharoa Domain is Northland’s pilot site for the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme.

The project attracted further investment last month through the government’s $1 million fund to assist Northland forestry workers affected by Covid-19 job losses. ¢

“The school’s native plant nursery commenced in 2011, with the goal of creating an extensive nursery for the students to learn how to grow native plants from seed,” says deputy principal Diane Papworth.

“The students were mentored by the late Mr Dennis Hewetson, the school’s caretaker, a qualified nurseryman.

Unfortunately, Dennis died suddenly on December 27 2019. He had retired and intended working one day a week in the nursery. He was a major contributor to the project’s success.

Mid-winter swim experience

Police seek leads on suspicious fire

Mangawhai’s second annual mid-winter swim is set for this Sunday, June 21, starting at 9am with swimmers meeting at the bottom of the steps near the surf life saving club.

Police are appealing for witnesses following a suspicious fire on Waoku Road in Tutamoe, north of Dargaville. The isolated rural community lost its community hall in a blaze, which saw it razed to the ground overnight on March 7.

Police sources say that law enforcement was notified at around midnight, but that despite the efforts of first responders the hall was destroyed.

The building was part of a community trust for the benefit of locals and surrounding communities.

“We are following positive lines of enquiry but have not yet apprehended anyone in relation to the arson,” says a spokesperson from the

police. It means that any additional information, evidence or recollections from members of the public could be of vital importance.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Andrew Bailey or Detective Sergeant Jonathan Tier on 105 and quote file number 200308/3293.

Important information about trees and powerlines Trees too close to powerlines can be a danger to the public and property.

Trees and other types of vegetation like bamboo and shrubs should be regularly maintained, so they do not grow into powerlines.

If trees are not maintained this can cause problems in high winds and storms – it can lead to power cuts and is a potential fire risk.

A person who touches a tree that’s in contact with a powerline can get an electric shock.

Power outages due to trees in powerlines cause major inconvenience to people, businesses and the community, and in some cases can also be life threatening for those who rely on electricity.

Your role in keeping trees clear of powerlines There’s a legal requirement under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 to keep your trees clear of our powerlines, to make sure they don’t affect our electricity supply or anyone’s safety.

It’s your responsibility to keep trees you own trimmed and away from our powerlines.

We regularly carry out tree surveys and inspect our powerlines, and we’ll do our best to let you know if your tree is getting too close to the lines. But we also need you to keep an eye out too.

The Growth Limit Zone The Growth Limit Zone is the legal minimum space surrounding any conductors (such as powerlines) on our network that must be kept clear of trees.

If we become aware that your tree is growing into the Growth Limit Zone, we will advise you and issue a ‘Cut or Trim’ notice, with a date by which the work must be completed by.

The Minimum Approach Distance is 4 metres from powerlines. Only approved professionals can trim trees within this distance (see diagram above).

We can provide you with a list of authorised contractors who can trim around our powerlines. In most cases, we will meet the reasonable costs of the first tree trimming.

The Notice Zone The Notice Zone extends one metre out from the Growth Limit Zone.

If your tree is growing into The Notice Zone, we may send you a hazard warning notice advising that the tree needs trimming before it becomes a problem.

You can arrange for the trimming of a tree in The Notice Zone, provided your chosen contractor is Northpower approved.

Please contact us at least three working days before the work begins to obtain this.

We will need to know the tree location and details of when the work will be done.

Don’t get closer than 4 metres to powerlines For safety reasons it’s important to note that only Northpower or an arborist approved to work around our network can trim a tree within the Minimum Approach Distance - within 4 metres of our lines.

Despite a strong belief in the ‘shop local’ ethos that’s helping us rebuild after Covid, Rick acknowledges that there are some things too specialised or esoteric to be stocked right here in town. That means it’s hard to get to Whangarei to pick them up for those who work nine to five or even longer hours on the farm. The solution; a new link to the nearby city, with a powerful Toyota van kitted out to pick up those ‘emergency’ bits and pieces for ‘need it now’ jobs.

Departing Dargaville daily at approximately 10am and then leaving Whangarei by 2pm, this means same-day delivery of items that might be vital to

Safety Work in Dargaville We’re improving signs and notices to make schools safer and more visible to drivers. Keeping our children safe and reducing the risk to them and their whanau around schools is a big part of our safety focus in Kaipara District. School starts and finishes can make quiet roads busy, and this should remind those in cars to be mindful that kids, parents, and school buses are moving about.

Safety work around schools is ongoing in Dargaville, with traffic management islands, and refuges for pedestrians being installed on Hokianga Road over the next two weeks. Please take care through the construction zone, and around schools across Kaipara District.

School safety work will continue into the 2020/2021 year.

Reserve Contribution Funding Reserve Contribution Funding is now open for applications.

The aim of the funding is to help groups create, improve and reprioritise how open spaces and reserves are used in their communities. Projects could include adding capacity or enhancing existing open spaces through landscaping, equipment provision or developing walking tracks.

All applicants must be a legal Not-for-Profit entity and have

a volunteer component to the project. There are three levels of project; small scale projects under $2000, projects not exceeding $20,000, and projects over $20,000. There is up to $300,000 to be awarded.

Dargaville farming veteran and leading founder of the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club, Bruce Galloway, launched his extensive autobiography at a club function last week, which saw funds donated for the Combined Churches Food Bank.

Mr Galloway donated $5 for each copy of his memoir The Flying Farmer, sold at the launch “to help those people affected by the economic fallout from the lockdown over Covid-19. The book launch was my opportunity to help out,” he said.

A large crowd gathered and lined up for copies signed by the author, as Ray Curle of Ruawai-based publishing house, Wild Side, described the book as “a New Zealand farmer’s memoir — like nothing you have read before.

“Bruce is a fair dinkum Kiwi bloke who broke-in farms the hard way, had heaps of misadventures and close calls, including crashing his Cessna 182 aeroplane and just surviving to tell the tale.

“There is more than enough in this autobiography of a hard-working adventurous cocky to keep everyone who is fascinated with the history of rural New Zealand up all hours of the night.”

Bruce was born the youngest of four children in 1942. His parents owned a 530-acre sheep and beef farm south of Dannevirke, at Waiaruhe. In those days, it was home to a school and a dairy factory. Both have since gone. He went on to own and work 11 different farms

variable power pricing is unfair and in terms of Northland, which already has more challenges than most regions, totally unsustainable.

On top of that, the power supply to the north is not crash-hot, is it? How many power outages have there been on the national grid in the upper North Island in recent weeks? They are common. Yet the Electricity Authority is telling us we have to pay more?

It’s not a big amount. Perhaps about $19 for each household a year according to the EA. Moreover, here’s the thing — that’s in the first year. Northpower and Top Energy have run the numbers and say the figure is much higher than $19 in year one.

Nor is there a restriction on how much the Electricity Authority can increase our price of power year-on-year. Then there is the principle — why should we be coerced into paying more for power than anybody else?

I applaud Northpower and Top Energy for taking a stand against this.

I am backing them 100%. I think all Northlanders should.

Under a recommendation to the government by the power pricing authority, the Electricity Authority, we will move from a pricing strategy of everybody in New Zealand paying the same amount for transmission lines to one where those who live farthest from the generation source pay more.

As most of the country’s electricity is generated in the South Island, Northland and Northlanders will have to shell out the bucks more than anybody else. That is when we are trying to recover from Covid-19, unemployment is destined for record levels, we are in a massive drought, and the prospects for growth under this government are just about zero.

It’s just not fair, it’s not equal, and the timing is ridiculous.

Moreover, it is not supported by those who are closest to the situation.

I have been in discussion with our local electricity lines companies Top Energy and Northpower. Both are advocating for us, saying to the Electricity Authority and the government that the whole concept of

Norfolk Court Rest Home residents have celebrated the joint victory of New Zealand over Covid-19 with a display of humour and defiance in the face of the deadly virus. It was also a chance to get together and enjoy the music of acclaimed accordionist Kevin Friedrich, who entertained the residents and staff with a medley of classics.

a symbolic victory as cakes and treats were enjoyed.

Kevin’s music was the perfect accompaniment, as a large-scale concert he had planned was forced to be abandoned due to the Covid scare.

Now that level one has been declared, and zero cases remain active in the country, he was able to share some of the tunes he’d been practising with an appreciative audience.

Of course, behind the merriment, there is a serious side to the coronavirus experience.

For now, though, it’s time to celebrate the end of an isolating and potentially stressful time, by showing the virus the door. The message from Norfolk Court’s residents and staff, who are very grateful indeed to live in New Zealand right now, is ‘don’t let it come back’; good riddance to a nasty health threat. ¢

With less than 100 days until we vote to choose our next government, Grey Power in Dargaville has arranged a series of informative ‘town class’ meetings with some of the candidates, allowing a semi-formal question and answer session for members of the public to engage with electoral hopefuls.

Spanning three months of meetings for the advocacy group, the first engagement will host Labour Party candidate Willow-Jean Prime on June 19.

New Zealand First MP and incumbent Regional Development Minister Shane Jones will appear on July 10. Finally, a ‘panel’ format ‘meet the candidates’ event will be hosted in August, with all five standing politicians addressing the questions of the public. Sitting MP for Northland, Matt King, visited a wellattended Grey Power meeting in March before coronavirus countermeasures put an end to public gatherings.

Grey Power, despite being primarily convened as a group to support better living and rights for older citizens, is welcoming of others to come and put their questions to the candidates in what is the first announced ‘open house’ series of meetings of its kind for the region. Northland is tipped by many political candidates as a ‘battleground’ electorate in the wake of recent polling, which suggests that a win here for either the incumbent, Mr King, or the New Zealand First candidate, Mr Jones, could alter the post-election make-up of any possible coalition.

Also expected to be a big part of the pre-election debate, especially among our older residents, are the twin referenda, which address both euthanasia (also termed death with dignity) for the terminally ill, and the possibility of legalising cannabis, known for its medical efficacy as well as recreational use.

Both issues have the potential to impact on those in their later years, as both could herald reforms to the practice

of medicine of interest to older citizens.

The full series of ‘meet the candidates’ events will take place month by month at Dargaville’s Methodist Church auditorium, with regular reminders of each forthcoming engagement in this publication. ¢

Library spokesperson Jillaine Murray says the shift to a more permissive environment has unlocked the technological side of the popular community knowledge hub, but that it’s also a chance to reassess how those services are delivered. It’s a case of ‘we provide the door, you bring the key’.

“Everyone is welcome, but some basic knowledge of computers is a must, as the library provides free access to the equipment but doesn’t provide computer training. The library staff can assist with basic tips for using the equipment, or they can point you in the right direction if you need further assistance beyond that,” says Jillaine.

“There are businesses in Dargaville who provide free computer training, and there are other groups that will provide computer assistance, however, there is usually a charge associated with those services. We see how empowered our customers are when they have had some basic training, and they come in and are confident in their use of the

computers. We really want to encourage that so they can get the most out of the free equipment we offer” Think of it like a car rental service; they provide the machinery, but not your licence. The library staff ask patrons to remember that they are there to help make knowledge, on paper or the web, accessible, but that the tools to use that knowledge are things to develop for ourselves. Ask the library team for further information on free local computer training providers if you’re interested in bettering your skills in cyberspace. For older citizens, the group to talk to is Senior Net, a group of tech-savvy and like-minded locals who prove that technology isn’t just for the teens. Then there’s more formal training available through learning centres and polytechs for those taking their skills to the next stage; some of this can be accessed free of charge too. ¢

Autumn of 2020 has been a long, strange and stressful time for most, as the nation shored up its defences against coronavirus and, ultimately, united to break the chain of infection and weather the storm. Other nations have not been so lucky, with poor political choices, large populations, porous borders and economic factors combining to create a chilling death toll.

Having been spared widespread tragedy (though we were far from untouched by the mortality of Covid-19), we could take the view that we were simply lucky to live where we do, on a relatively isolated Pacific island with oceanic borders and a first-world health system.

Then again, the more productive thing to do is to learn from the successes and mistakes of this outbreak to help us, not just in future, when even more serious pandemics could threaten our country, but in the present as well.

At the forefront of applying useful knowledge from the Covid threat are rest homes and hospitals for the elderly. We have seen that the rules and precautions taken elsewhere were effective, and not just against coronavirus. Many rest homes and aged care facilities report

that seasonal bugs like cold and flu are in decline as strict handwashing, visitor contact limiting, hand sanitising and other practical measures slash the onset of winter ills.

It’s not just physical steps and new rules, which have made this possible.

A prevailing attitude that we are now more aware of how viruses and bacteria function, and how we can break that chain of contagion, now exists in society.

We’ve done it once with Covid, goes this line of thinking, why not carry over and reduce the harm from other bugs too?

At both ends of the age spectrum, in schools and elder care residences, there’s a growing trend against ‘just accepting’ winter as a time of widespread sickness, some strains of which can kill as surely as the novel Covid-19. ¢

When the seasons change and the desire for a hot and generous lunch or all-day breakfast becomes an obsession, Dargaville’s Te Kauta cafe will have you covered.

That’s the promise from new chef Michael, who comes to the already popular eatery on Dargaville’s main street with a 17-year track record as a qualified chef, and a hunger (if you’ll pardon the pun) for good food done right.

This local exponent of classic dishes as they should be has engaged with the Te Kauta team, who it should be said already embraced the concept of hearty, wholesome and hot items on their menu.

Michael’s keen to take this traditional, home-kitchen fare and expand on it, with more ‘proper old-fashioned’ recipes prepared with locally sourced ingredients. It already includes the arrival of sweet and sticky pork ribs with a smokey, piquant sauce, accompanied by a garden salad and chips for a most satisfying lunch.

There’s talk of a proper cottage pie coming on force soon, too; that’s prime ground beef, fluffy potato topping, bubbling cheese and fresh veggies.

So, you’d like to express your character, show your appreciation for fine design, get a little quirky, and meet like-minded people by getting amongst the ever-growing world of classic autos and bikes? How can you pick a hassle-free winner that appreciates like a fine wine, rather than rusting into a pile of disappointment?

Nostalgia and aesthetics are everything when it comes to picking a classic. However, while many of us would love a Mercedes gullwing or an Aston DB5, such icons are priced out of the market for most.

A good choice is a vehicle that you remember fondly from your younger years; this could be a European cruiser, an American muscle car or even a Japanese sports coupe. The choice is everything, but for true classic status a car or bike must be at least two of the following; special when it was produced, beautiful or at least odd to behold, and well regarded in its own time.

Once you’ve scrolled and clicked through the shapes and the era you like, and established a budget, check out the owners club for your prospective classic.

The theory is, it’s best to pick up a car that was at the height of its popularity 20 to 30 years ago, and which has a following for a reason.

Examples include the E30 BMW or the Toyota MR2; right now the first is on the uptick in price and desirability, and the second is starting to head that way.

Owners clubs tell you a lot about their

cars, from wry discussions on common faults and how to fix them, through to the availability of parts.

Many are friendly communities who will go above and beyond to help keep members’ rides on the road, as I’ve personally found with the classic Mercedes bunch.

Another good source of information before buying is the old archival footage of reviews when the car or bike was new.

It’s also a good experiment to pretend something has gone wrong (let’s say the suspension bushings) and price up replacements on the internet. If it’s only possible to get the parts from a specialist in Lithuania for thousands of dollars, this might not be the everyman’s classic for you.

The good news is, these days the classic term is wide and diverse. Cars like the Ford Escort and Toyota Starlet are as esteemed among their fans as the most wedge-shaped supercar. If you loved a particular machine in the late 80s or early 90s, chances are it now has a fan club, massive tech support archives and every reason to revisit ownership. ¢
