p Koseni Latavao, Jessica Sinclair, Aleesha Bennett and Hine-Ataahua Bennett enjoy an afternoon of entertainment and family fun at the Te Wairua o Te Matariki — Spirit of Matariki celebration in Dargaville. Matariki is celebrated when a cluster of stars known as Pleiades appears in the night sky and signals the beginning of Maori New Year. The community event hosted an open stage, workshops, food and kite flying followed with a fireshow by Circus Kumarani.

“I was stunned to get the letter saying I was nominated,” said Mr Puharich. “I have accomplished a lot over time and that is with thanks to the people I have worked alongside in the different groups and to my family for their support

over the years.” Organisations he has been involved with include Dargaville Museum, Lions, the Settlers Club, the Bowling Club, the Dalmatian Club and the Stroke Club. Mr Puharich and his wife Jacoba have four daughters and

one son. “We have nine granddaughters, three grandsons and one greatgranddaughter. They are all wonderful. I think it is the women in my life who keep me well,” he says. continued on page 3 …
