John Tomlinson stepped down after holding the position of president for five years whilst Warren Osbaldiston retired after 18 years as secretary. The new president and secretary respectively are Brian Nisbett and Ken Smith. Student Amy Lawrence produced a loom band wearable art creation which classmate Renee Allen modelled for her.

The dress came complete with a loom band handbag.

“Amy is a very creative person and often does things of her own accord as part of her extracurricular activity,” said teacher Rebecca Clist.

“In previous years we have held an art festival but our calendar is full this year so we will organise a junior wearable arts competition instead later in the year.“ Mrs Clist says the year seven and eight art class are building skills involving drawing, painting and collage.

“There are many facets students can explore nowadays for employment and there are many artistic options available, particularly with design. At the moment the students are collecting plastic bottle tops which will be used to create murals.

“Each house has to recycle, design and make a bottletop mural which will be judged in the last week of term. It is a whole school inter-house iwi competition.

As an example Ngapuhi house have created a cultural design both abstract and literal.

“We run an exciting arts programme

here with visual, music, drama and Maori performing arts. Some of our students in the past have been chosen to go to London to participate in drama workshops.

“I like the saying ‘there are 206 bones in your body, surely one is creative’, because sometimes we don’t believe in ourselves but we all have creativity, it just comes out in different ways.” ¢

He says at present one of his biggest passions is the Stroke Club which he formed after suffering from a stroke himself in 1988.

“I started it as a support group as I knew what it was like through my experience. We would all have tell a joke no matter how bad our strokes were. It is a lot of fun.

We meet on the first Monday of every month at 1.30pm at the nurses recreational hall at the Dargaville Hospital.

“I have been very awed by the wonderful support given to stroke survivors by husbands and wives.

Many of these continue to support our club after their partners have gone on.

“Receiving the award was a surprise and I feel honoured and humbled by it.

The Kaipara has so much going for it.

We have a wonderful, warm and caring community here. There are countless hours given by volunteers. There are a lot of positives for the area.” ¢

Younger members of the community have the chance to hone their creative skills with a Youth Arts programme offered by Te Roroa Learning Assistance.

The organisation has recently received a Creative Community Scheme grant for materials and tutor Stephanie Pattison says all they need now is for students to put up their hands and express their interest in the 20-week course.

The course is open to a maximum of 12 students aged between 16 and 24 years old and will cover painting, sketching and spray painting, with the end goal of creating a mural.

“It will give students a sense of achievement,” she says. “At the moment there aren’t many things for young people to do here. We want to p help them feel included and to know that they are cared about.”

Stephanie says this is one of the reasons behind wanting to create a mural as part of the course.

“The mural is something they can be proud of and it will stay there forever.”

The idea came about when the Te Roroa Learning Assistance building was graffitied earlier this year. This highlighted to staff that there was a

need for something to channel the creativity amongst youth into.

“Art is a way of expressing yourself,” she says. “We want to extract that talent from the community and maybe even inspire someone to do something different.”

Over the five and a half years Dargaville High School Building Academy has been running, tutor Tim Pratt has helped 39 out of 41 students find full-time employment.

Mr Pratt has been a licensed builder since 1989 and says he is immensely proud of his students.

One of his first pupils, Regan Gough, has recently become a fully qualified builder and is working fulltime for Smith Construction, whilst two other past students are closely following suit.

Artists around the Kaipara are once more channelling their creativity in preparation for the region’s premier art event of the year.

The proposal to close Promenade Point Campground was met with 93.8 per cent opposition and 6.2 per cent supporting the closure.

Dargaville Arts Association chair Peter Boyd says the aim of the Kaipara Art Awards is to challenge artists to improve their work.

“Every year the standard is improving. This year artists can only submit one piece of artwork each so they will have to be very selective.

“This event shows off the incredible talent we have here in the Kaipara. It will also give participants confidence that they can compete in national awards and they receive considerable exposure,” Mr Boyd says.

“We want artists to challenge themselves and put their best work forward.”

The 2016 Kaipara Art Awards will have a new format with only two categories: two dimensional and three dimensional.

“The changes to the categories bring the competition in line with other awards across the New Zealand art scene,” says Kaipara Art Awards chair John Pickworth.

The awards will be held at The Kauri Museum Exhibition Hall and there are four major prizes in each category including a judges award, first, second and third, with highly commended awarded at the judge’s discretion.

Kaipara residents are being invited to participate in a locally produced movie which is to be set in the year 2040.

“Called ‘Te Toa — The Warrior’, the film is based around a nuclear war where a brutal Maori dictator takes leadership of New Zealand. A warrior arises from amongst the people to give hope and lead them through the catastrophe,” says producer Moemoea Mohoawhenua.

“It is very visual with a meaningful dialogue and it is intensely powerful.

It is not a rigid mainstream process.

It is the third feature length film I have written and produced. The first was Destina and the second was called The Dead Earth.

“The Warrior will be entirely in Te Reo Maori with English subtitles.

Actors just need to have a general grasp of the Te Reo language and be able to pronounce words correctly.

We will teach them from the script.

Members from the Paparoa community joined together for a Mosaic Weekend with tutor Pat Parkinson from Auckland for two days of learning to cut tiles, grout and create individual designs for personal pieces of artwork.

“We also made a start on the huge concrete couch made by members of the Arty Farty’s group,” said Pat. “It was an amazing time. Although I was the tutor, all credit goes to the students who created beautiful designs.”

The seat is called a Memory Couch and is situated on the old p Paparoa mosaic workshop members with their creations bowling club site which Darryll Poole, donated all tiles grout, burnt down.

“Creating the art piece is to put love adhesives for this community project.

“Last year we made the seat sculpture back into the area. It will allow people to sit in the community gardens and and this year we are mosaicking it. We ponder,” said coordinator of the Arty had 19 people plus volunteers come along. We are gathering on a weekly Farty’s, Anne Shanks.

“We use the gardens for our food basis to complete it and we welcome bank. As a group we just get on anybody interested in mosaics to come with it and help those we can in our and learn.”

According to Karen Foster, owner of Foster’s Home Decorating, they end up selling out of tickets to Ladies Night.

A total of 180 tickets were swept up by local ladies keen to take the night off to enjoy the unique annual event that is hosted by the local homewares store and Karen reckons they could have easily sold another 50 tickets.

“We could have sold that much more if we wanted to, but we were just a tad concerned about people feeling squashed, so we limited it.”

So will the ladies night be back again next year?

“Definitely we will be back, we want to support our loyal customer base who love this event. It’s an opportunity for the women to just come in and leave the husbands behind at home to cook dinner themselves.

The ladies get to socialise with people they haven’t seen in ages and some of them really make a night of it; some of them will get their hair done first then go out for dinner, then they’ll come here, it really is a special occasion.” ¢

Arapohue School Reunion chairperson Raewyn Robinson says a photo of a man was left behind at the school’s 125th reunion held in 2001.

Raewyn who was a student of the school believes the photo might be of a former principal.

“I’m not sure though, so I’d like to find out for certain.”

She says the photo isn’t dated so they’re not sure how old it is.

“I think there could be someone in the district who does know who it is, so if anyone can help identify this man, we would be very happy to hear from them.”

Kaipara canines will be looking better than ever thanks to a new dog grooming business, Sandy Paws, starting up at Baylys Beach.

Born and bred Dargaville woman Lacey Marinkovich has returned home after a nine-and-a-half-year stint in Australia and has set up her own salon.

“I wanted to get back to family and friends,” she says. “I had to think outside the box about how I could fit into the community.”

Being a dog lover and having groomed her own dogs for many years she decided to go for it and set about offering her time in a grooming salon in Australia.

She says part of being a good dog groomer is about having a natural ability to connect with animals.

“It’s all about the relationship with the dog and making sure they are comfortable. A lot of people think of their animals as family. I want my clients to be comfortable with the way I handle their animal and make sure they have a really happy experience so the dog comes out fluffed up, smelling delicious and feeling handsome.”

She says she was surprised to find there were quite a few non-farming dogs living in the Kaipara and is offering a full groom which includes a wash, a blow dry and a clip with the option of just a wash. For the wash she uses a natural

product with a coconut scent that stays on the coat for up to two weeks after being washed.

“It means you get rid of that doggy smell. I also use a de-shedding product that gets rid of any excess hair. This is beneficial for people who have an animal living inside. It fluffs them up and I have products that brighten, whiten and get rid of the rusty colour around their nails.”

Lacey says she is enjoying being back home and is looking forward to working with a variety of different breeds of dogs and getting out of her comfort zone. ¢

The White Rock Gallery in Paparoa is another example of the thriving Kapara arts community, having sold $19,000 worth of art in its first thirteen months of opening.

Dargaville Intermediate student Danika Beardsall and Taimania Bristow from Ruawai Primary School represented their schools celebrating World Oceans Day with a Poor Knights snorkel experience after participating in the Experiencing Marine Reserves programme.

Committee member Hanna Stevens says this is quite an achievement for a gallery in a rural community.

The programme involves learning about marine biodiversity in the classroom, snorkelling in the pool, and investigating the local marine environment before experiencing a marine reserve and taking action with regards to marine conservation in their communities.

“Dargaville Intermediate school has again wowed the EMR team with their drive and enthusiasm towards marine conservation,” said programme director Samara Nicholas. The students raised more than $900 towards marine conservation. The funding was raised for the Maui dolphin, turtle transmitters and rehabilitation treatment.

“Students worked hard petitioning for rubbish bins at Baylys Beach, spreading conservation awareness through the local town with posters, cleaning Baylys Beach and adopting Maui dolphins for ongoing sponsorship.

Ruawai Primary School is a new school to the EMR program and impressed Northland coordinator Elle Gibson with the students leadership and drive for conservation.

“Taimania and members from her class had organised several events to support the NZ Sea Lion, Goat Island Marine reserve and the Maui dolphin.

They raised more than $670 through bake sales, raffles, sausage sizzles and school mufti days, these students showed excellent work ethic and passion at such a young age.

“It’s very inspiring to see pupils develop knowledge and become more environmentally conscious at a primary level.

These two schools have completed some outstanding marine conservation action projects and other proactive activities to spread awareness about local environmental issues and endangered marine species.” ¢

KAIPARA GREY POWER A goal of providing a new retirement village A Visual Personality Organisation Strong; active but not militant; friendly and mature; acts with dignity and integrity; having wisdom of age; adds to quality of life; a positive organisation to be associated with.

The original reason for forming Grey Power was the surcharge on New Zealand Superannuation and now activity is still continuing with superannuation, as well as in areas of health, electricity, human rights, publicity, social services, local bodies, law and order, justice, residential care and retirement villages.

The Kaipara Grey Power Association has been active in some of these areas over the years and has now joined forces with the Dargaville Community Development Board with a goal of providing a new retirement village in Dargaville. Northland Inc, a subsidiary of the Northland Regional Council, is assisting with this project. Retirement village industry is one of the fastest growing industries in New Zealand and with the housing situation in the country not improving, more retirement villages will free up houses and help ease the housing demand.

There are various types of retirement village tenures and the most common in New Zealand at the present are Occupational Rights Agreement villages that have a Licence to Occupy as the means of tenure. These tend to be expensive and we feel that other tenure options should be available such as leasehold, unit titles, rentals, etc. That is why we will have an in-depth feasibility study to ascertain what the current market would like. The operations of retirement village is quite complex and therefore if you are considering this housing option one day, the attendance at the forthcoming seminar is a must.

Other areas that the association will be active in include sponsoring a candidates meeting before the local government elections later this year. Grey Power would like to see a responsible council acting in the best interests of all residents and

ratepayers. The candidates meeting will be an opportunity for everybody to meet and question candidates on any local government matter. A request will also be made to have a permanent Older Persons Committee in place to assist the council with any matters affecting the older people in the district. Grey Power welcomes any suggestions or other matters where the association can take action. On the national scene, Grey Power is active with ACC

and a current topic is ageism. ACC is aware that ageism can affect decisions and is asking for any evidence where ageism has affected the outcome of a particular case.

Grey Power’s policy on the Trans Pacific Partnership is to work to ensure that older people are not disadvantaged if the New Zealand Government signs the TPP agreement. Any mature person can join Grey Power and thus help make our community a better place. ¢

The time for calving The cold weather has arrived and with it comes the annual stock renewal, that is calving with most conventional farmers, commencing the process in the middle of winter.

One common mistaken belief about dairy cows is that the calf will be better left on ‘mum’ rather than being collected in a careful manner and placed in a warm environment on clean shavings.

The next most common error is that the calf, if it has suckled ‘mum’, will have received sufficient colostrum to create a high level of natural immunity.

This assumption is incorrect for nearly 50% of all dairy calves born.

We have several farmer members that as a matter of course ‘tube feed’ every calf collected with two litres of fresh colostrum as soon after birth as is reasonably practicable.

Where herds have been vaccinated to reduce the incidence of rotavirus, this practice could be advisable, just to ensure a higher level of immunity.

Remember also that the colostrum used is best taken from vaccinated mature cows at their first milking post calving.

Where farms are very susceptible to rotavirus, then a booster shot for those later calvers can be worthwhile. Often the systems on farm are subject to a fair bit of stress at this stage and a rotavirus outbreak can add unnecessarily to an already difficult period.

Another oversight that occurs too often on farm, is the delay in cleaning and disinfecting the rearing facilities.

Replenishing calf bedding before those early calves is a must. This job is too often left until the last minute and not completed well.

Finally, leaving the calf rearing to the ill-informed or poorly trained is a ‘no no’. Wives more often than not are the best at this job. They tend to be more patient and obviously have a maternal streak that young men and even older men often do not possess.

Driving into a paddock with a feeder loaded with milk, expecting to drop it off whilst you go and move the ‘springers’ is not a realistic option. The smaller and slower drinkers just keep on missing out.

There is a plethora of information regarding calf rearing. Much is regurgitated seasonally but the fact remains that common sense, patience and planning account for most of what you need to do.

FERTSTATION LTD INNOVATION DRIVES LOW COST GRASS GROWTH Graeme Lawrence’s new business FertStation brings together innovative new fertiliser application technology and a bacteria that fixes atmospheric Nitrogen to increase grass growth and reduce costs.

For the last 3 years we’ve been trialling a new system on the farm that’s focused on getting back to the basics of growing good quality grass cheaply. The system uses a combination of small amounts of urea with finely ground lime, sulphur, magnesium and other trace elements. The fine powder is mixed with water to form a suspended slurry which is added Gibberellic acid. The quantities of each ingredient are based on a soil test so amounts vary from paddock to paddock.

We’ve added Biostart’s new Nitrogen fixing bacteria to the mix, applied it to a number of paddocks and compared it with our standard suspension mix. The reason for adding this into the mix is that the product has shown to have increased maize yields. Based on this I was interested to see if we can capture some of the ‘free’ Nitrogen from the atmosphere and see what impact it would have on grass growth. We’ve been regularly monitoring the DM growth rates with a plate meter and to date the response of the addition of the Biostart N has been very impressive.

To put these results into perspective to get the same amount of grass as the combination of Suspension and Biostart N we would have to have applied at least 120kg of urea. The big advantage I see is that the effect from the initial application is still working. The Autumn Application on the 10th of June 2015 gave us five grazings and got us through the winter without having to apply any more nitrogen. The clover growth is very strong and the cows are evenly grazing the treated paddocks. We’re getting great root growth, so with a bit of luck the grass will hold on longer into the summer. Best of all the cows are turning the extra grass we’re seeing in the paddock into milk in the vat.
