The dialogue was ordered by Justice Paul Heath when he handed down his judgement in late May. It had been hoped the parties could agree on the wording of declarations that would provide a settlement to the case.

However, Kaipara District Council chief commissioner John Robertson says agreement was not reached and outstanding matters will now go to full hearing in the Christchurch High Court on July 18, where Justice Heath

is currently presiding over the South Canterbury Finance fraud trial.

The hearing will be relayed by video link to the High Court in Whangarei for interested ratepayers.

Mr Robertson says the Mangawhai Ratepayer s and Residents Association’s decision to appeal against Justice Heath’s judgement had complicated matters. continued on page 5 …

 Selwyn Park School student Joseph Tebbutt and his mum Erica spent a memorable morning with the Wiggles in Whangarei last Thursday. “During the show, they kept referring to Joseph, waving to him and coming over to high five him. Suffice to say, Joseph felt very special and even had a song dedicated to him in the show.” Voting for Selwyn Park School’s Dargaville Westpac Person of the Year 2014 fundraiser is still open. People can vote for their favourite nominee at Westpac Dargaville until the end of July. Votes cost $1 with all proceeds benefiting the school.

Delay on Northland Local champions local government proposal to defend world titles

Northlanders will have to wait until after September’s general election to find out whether their local government will be reorganised.

World champion unicyclists Sam La Hood and Christian Huriwai will defend their titles in Montreal, Canada this July.

Last year the commission put out a draft proposal that would combine the region’s three territorial local authorities and the Northland Regional Council into one council, with a single major, councillors elected by ward and community boards to protect local interests.

The commission’s proposal attracted 1685 submissions, with 90% opposed.

After a further round of oral submissions, the commission had been expected to release a final proposal by the end of June.

Based in Kaikohe, 17 year old Sam and 22 year old Christian are getting in some last minute training before heading to UNICON 17 — Unicycling World Championships, which run from July 30 to August 10.

Sam, who finished her studies at Dargaville High School last year, first won the women's world street unicycling title at UNICON 2012 in Italy and Christian successfully defended the men’s street unicycling title at the same event.

He has held the title since UNICON XV, which was held  Sam La Hood competing at last year’s national championships, held in Dargaville in Wellington in 2010.

It was a bad time to be a pig in Tangiteroria last weekend.

The best minds in Dargaville were all at the local fire station last Friday in a quiz night held to raise money for the local St John Ambulance.

 With 15 pigs, weighing an average of nearly 45kg, there were plenty of satisfied hunters in Tangiteroria last weekend

The local tavern was headquarters for the Great Tangiteroria Pig Hunt, an annual competition for hunters.

Tavern manager Sheryl Johnson says this year’s event was a big success. “It was awesome. We had 42 hunters and 15 pigs. That’s the same number of hunters as last year but a lot more pigs.”

She says pigs could be killed anywhere, not just in Tangiteroria.

the south right through to the Far North. But they had to bring their pigs to the tavern for weighing between 4pm and 5pm on Saturday or from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday.

Darren Meyer picked up a sponsors’ prize worth $200 for the heaviest boar weighing at 56kg. The trophy for the best average weight pig went to Wayne Doherty, whose 44.8kg beast won a game trail camera worth $400 and vouchers worth $500.

There were also possum and eel competitions to keep younger ones interested.

At the end of the event all the pigs were auctioned off to raise money for next year’s prizes. The top price was $80.

Ms Harrison says she is grateful to the event sponsors who made everything possible, to the whanau riders who did all the catering and for the tavern staff for their hard work. 

The event was a huge success and is expected to raise more than $2,000 to help the Northern Wairoa St John committee buy urgently needed training equipment.

Although the fire station was filled to capacity with 20 teams of six, many more were turned away because of a lack of space.

“It was the first one I’ve ever organised,” says organiser John Tillick.

“I had no idea of what response we’d get. It was above my expectations. We could have filled 40 tables.”

Mr Tillick says they took in $2,500 on the night. St John would like to thank

local businesses for donating all the prizes. Mr Tillick says the raffles proved even more successful than hoped, although there are costs associated with catering to be paid. Once those have been deducted, he expects the final result to be between $2,200 and $2,300.

While that is a good start, Mr Tillick says the committee still has a long way to go to reach its goal of $12,000.

A number of initiatives to raise the remaining money are being considered.

The quiz was won by a team put together by the Rotary Club of Dargaville. 

Principal says farewell to Ruawai

Local identity farewelled at Baylys

Llong-standing Ruawai College principal Stephen Fordyce has said goodbye to pupils, students and ex-students after 13 years at the the school.

Around 300 people went to Baylys Beach on Friday June 20 to farewell one of the area’s most well known residents.

Head girl Emma Battcher, said Mr Fordyce had first taught at Ruawai College in 1977.

“The evidence is the staff photo which we often stop and laugh at.”

Returning to the historical theme Board of Trustees chairman John Blackwell noted that Mr Fordyce had started at Ruawai College in 1976 but left after two years to teach at Wesley College in South Auckland where he stayed for 17 years. Then he went to the Education Review Office. Finally in 2001 he successfully applied for the position of principal of Ruawai College.

Mr Blackwell said Mr Fordyce had reorganised the college’s  Retiring Ruawai College principal Stephen Fordyce speaks at his farewell last week senior management, revamped its mission statement, organised new goodbye was difficult. “I’m desperate signage for the school, and instituted a to make everyone laugh, because if you new school newsletter called Torrent. Neville Searle, who had lived at Baylys for many years and was well-known for his regular walks along the beach, died in Whangarei Hospital after failing to overcome a bout of pneumonia.

It was appropriate that his funeral service took place on the sands he walked every day.

His brother Barry says up to 300 people came to say goodbye to Neville. After the service, Neville’s funeral cortège made its way along the beach to Glinks Gully and then to Redhill Cemetery where he was buried in the family plot.

Neville Searle was brought up on the family farm near Te Kopuru, eventually taking  Neville Searle on one of his walks along Baylys Beach it over from his parents. But health “He used to walk up and down the beach concerns eventually forced him to and around the houses. Everybody knew sell and he spent the latter part of him. He had a cheery wave.”

Mr Searle had separated from his his life at Baylys Beach. Barry Searle says his brother was a friendly fellow, wife. He was 77 and is survived by although he was a man of few words. her, a daughter and three sons. 

Jetz gear up for jubilee New radio recruits

Ruawai Jetz will take a trip down memory lane this September to mark the netball club’s half century milestone.

Big River FM’s newest recruits are looking forward to their six month internship at Dargaville’s community radio station.

 Jetz Blue Netball Team (Premier Grade)

The club, which has been associated with the Northern Wairoa Netball Centre for 50 years this season, is planning a weekend Jubilee and is calling on all members past and present to get involved.

“We have Jubilee committee meetings every second Friday and anyone who would like to be involved is welcome to come along. People can contact me through our email ruawaijetz@gmail. com or keep up-to-date by following our Ruawai Jetz facebook page,” says club captain Kyla Johnson.

“When people register for the Jubilee, they can choose what and how much they want to sign up for during the weekend and the price of their ticket will be relative to their choices.

“The first step is to get in touch to fill out a registration form and we’ll go from there.”

Jubilee weekend will start with some early afternoon games on Saturday, September 20, followed by a bus trip to Tokatoka Tavern, honouring the club’s longstanding tradition of stopping off at the tavern on the way home from Saturday netball games. A social will be held on Saturday evening at the town hall and the weekend’s activities will wind down with Sunday brunch at the sports club.

“So far, we’ve come up with over 150 names for current and past members but if there is anyone else who would like to come to the Jubilee or has names of players, we’d love to hear from you.” 

During their first week on the job, the interns visited Kia Ora 107.7 FM, based at Te Kopuru School and were given a tour of the studio by Year 8 students Nikau Swaans, Jaeshana Kira

and Diane Lim. Big River FM station manager Anaru Tana was impressed with the students attitude and the school’s on-air studio.

“It all looks very professional and our aim is for the interns to work with students each week, and help them gain confidence and learn new skills.”

Te Kopuru School principal Lee Anderson said the plan is to have Kia Ora FM running 24/7. 

Kaurilands seeks community help to expand

An organisation that has provided supported living opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities for almost 25 years is seeking public help as it begins a major expansion project.

The Kaurilands Skills Centre was established in 1990 by Mike Mudford and other former IHC workers who wanted to set up a facility in the Northern Wairoa.

After initially operating from a house in Dargaville, trustees bought a farm in Tokatoka and Kaurilands moved out to the country more than 20 years ago.

There are two houses on the property providing supported living for 19 people with intellectual disabilities.

The property also has its  Kaurilands resident Jeroen Kraayenhof proudly displays one of his workshop creations own laundry and workshops, providing opportunities for residents She says current houses provide to gain skills. Otamatea HarbourCare secretary, Mark Vincent says the recently established society has been given a helping hand to get started with a grant of 1,700 trees from the NZ Landcare Trust/WWF Reconnecting Northland programme.

Local farmers Les and Vicki Kenworthy-Thompson have come on board with the project, having provided and fenced off a waterway on their property next to SH12 at Huarau, opposite Huarau Station Road. “This

has suited us with our ongoing planting programme,” said Les. “We have been planting on the dairy farm for a number of years and this will be a continuation of that. We really appreciate the assistance from the landcare group.”

The first planting is scheduled for Saturday July 12, starting at 9.30am.

Back then, they entered the competition for the first time with a dish they called ‘The Roar’, a spicy, fullflavoured venison chili, combining a little of Donice’s Texan culinary heritage with the rich, textural complexity of Kiwi deer.

The judges were wowed, not just by the dish but by the effort thrown into the competition by the Aratapu team.

This year all the stops have been pulled out — just listen to this description of ‘When Bambi Met Porky’ — a minifeast with a wild tapas theme. There’s a cucumber salad starter topped with a wild boar and venison slice, served with a with spicy jalapeno sour cream dressing. Next come the Aratapu’s world famous pork ribs, a mini pie stuffed with venison chili and topped with capsicum chutney. Follow that up with a mini

muffaletta (a hearty, cajun-style hot sandwich) made with Monteith’s Barrel Aged Porter slow roasted venison. Layer this between baked and lightly toasted kumara bread with cheese and olive chutney, then complete the picture with kumara sticks on the side, finished with pear wedges with blue cheese, and a chili sliver wrapped in prosciutto and drizzled with passionfruit sauce.

This very special dish is available for a limited time only, during the running of this year’s Wild Food Challenge. It’s well worth a bite — because this year the Aratapu’s kitchen could beat all comers to become the Wild Food capital of New Zealand.

School holiday fun at the library Finding activities to keep the younger ones amused during school holidays can be quite a mission.

That’s especially the case when it’s cold and wet outside.

But Dargaville Library has some activities that aim to amuse and educate younger children, while taking a little of the pressure off parents.

Wednesday July 9 is Bananas in Pyjamas Day at the library. Wear your pyjamas to the library, listen to a story and take part in the colouring competition. All the fun takes place between 10.30 and 11.30am.

On the following Wednesday, July 16, it will be Photo Day at the library.

After listening to a story, kids will make a cool photo frame. Then they will strike a pose and hey presto!

Again, the fun takes place between 10.30 and 11.30am. 
