Dargaville High School and Otamatea High School students took part in an interschool sporting challenge this week initiated by the head prefects of both schools. Players of netball, rugby, football, basketball and hockey were involved. “Thanks to all those that made this day a great success. We look forward to travelling to Otamatea in 2019,” said DHS spokesperson, Alana Scott.
Chicken farm application suspended by Ayla Miller and Paul Campbell
The application by Tegel Foods Limited to develop and operate a huge chicken farm at Arapohue has been suspended, at the company’s request, following council opposition and a takeover bid for Tegel by a private company from the Philippines.

The surprise move comes just over a week away from resource consent hearings before commissioners, which were set to begin on August 8. Kaipara District Council and Northland Regional Council have released a review of submissions document recommending against granting the Tegel application, while details emerged of new acquisitions of Tegel stock by
Bounty Foods, a privately-owned chicken processor and retailer in the Philippines. In his report recommending Tegel’s application be declined, NRC consultant Ruben Wylie said the proposed poultry sheds’ odour could adversely affect neighbouring property owners. KDC planner, David Badham, said the proposal did not achieve the sustainable management of natural and physical
resources due to the potential for significant adverse odour effects and insufficient information in terms of the effects on Maori cultural values.
