Ambulance services in Kaipara have reached a significant milestone with St John appointing seven new full-time officers based at Maungaturoto and signalling an end to single-crewed ambulance services, while a special unit will be added to the ambulance fleet.

p When Te Kopuru’s community development leaders met to open the town’s new playground, park and basketball half-court in June, they also asked young citizens for their input into the park’s future upgrades. Now the winners of a contest to design those upgrades have been named. Junior students Isla Garton, Wiremu Wordley, Tukaha Kira and Ryder McCollum, joined senior students Israel Gotty, Malachay Smith-Askew, Lerena Morris and Manhit Singh-Warainch on the podium, with their designs incorporating concepts such as shade sails, a swimming pool, areas for different sports and fitness activities and a BMX bike track. All but one of the youngsters are Te Kopuru School pupils and were honoured by their teachers and classmates for the win. The first phase, recently opened, was built on the former site of Te Kopuru’s bowling club, with ample space remaining for the winners’ future visions.

The Kaipara District Council has formally adopted its Annual Plan 2019/2020 that will provide for works and costs, which will be introduced for the coming 12 months.

“Adding paid staff in Otamatea means the ambulance will now be available 24/7 and ensures patients get the best available care when they need it. It also enhances the safety and wellbeing of St John’s dedicated ambulance staff.

“Double crewing benefits patients, especially in rural areas where it means they receive clinical care while being driven to hospital, something that couldn’t be done with single crewing. It makes the job safer for our ambulance officers and helps reduce fatigue, manual handling injuries and stress.”

St John territory manager for Rodney, Blake Murray says with the addition of Emergency Medical Assistant (EMA) staff in Otamatea, the project has now completed its second year, having employed 147 new ambulance officers across 44 stations and reducing the incidence of single crewing by almost 2,000 responses each month.

“We’re very excited to be able to add so much additional resource in Otamatea. We’ve employed a fantastic group of people, and they’re already making a real difference.”

Volunteers will still play a critical role in providing ambulance services in the area by crewing the new First Response Unit.

“We’re really keen to see the First Response Unit come into service in the coming months, to improve our response and resilience in the area,” says Mr Murray.

“It includes an average rates rise for the 2019/2020 year of 5.26%, which was consulted on and then adopted in the Long Term Plan.

“Key projects for the next year include the remediation of the Insley St/Tomarata Bridge being brought forward, delivery of projects in the Mangawhai Community Plan, the ongoing District Plan Review and supporting growth in these areas.

“Council also approved some minor changes to fees and charges for the next financial year,” Mr Hope said.

“There will be a change to costs associated with the introduction of the Food Act, Resource Management fees increase slightly, and some changes to costs associated with cemeteries and burials were approved. “ Registration for working dogs were decreased to $33 for the fourth and subsequent dog registered to the same owner (with a late fee of $44). The registration fee for non-working dogs was increased by $2 to $68 (if paid by 31 August 2019). ¢

A day of dairy discoveries

On Friday, July 19, from 2pm to 5pm Fonterra will open the gates to their Maungaturoto facility, as they host their annual family day, this year open to the general public.

With more than a century of history, the dairy factory site has been added to and improved over the years to now contains a considerable investment in dairy processing technology.

Since the end of the ‘kauri boom’ in the early 1900s, there has been a significant dairying presence in the area, and visitors to the family day will be able to reflect on how technology has changed, as well as checking out milk tankers, tasting a range of dairy treats

The government has announced a $2 million investment in nextgeneration GPS technology to provide emergency services with improved accuracy.

Contractors are back on the site of the planned dementia unit at Maungaturoto’s Riverview Rest Home with a target date for completion of July next year, according to the chair of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust, Craig Fergus.

Services such as the Northland Rescue Helicopter will use this technology to save lives when the rollout is complete.

“I’m pleased to announce that the government, alongside Australia, is investing in world-leading technology to vastly improve the accuracy of GPS in New Zealand enabling faster and safer helicopter rescues and innovation in a range of emerging technologies,” says Eugenie Sage, the minister in charge of this project, alongside Transport minister Phil Twyford.

GPS currently provides information accurate to about 10 metres. The new system, SBAS, can be as precise

as 10 centimetres. That means better representation of terrain, easier and quicker rescues, and more lives saved. Fire and police services will also benefit, as will the Navy, Coast Guard, civil aviators and even rideshare drivers.

Rescue helicopter pilots have already called this ‘a game changer’, and with our own local Northland Rescue Helicopter fleet covering such a wide and varied geographic area, there’s been understandable enthusiasm for the new technology from those who will use it on the front lines.

Full coverage will be achieved by 2023 as the roll-out proceeds. ¢

The concrete floor is underway in the $3.6 million project to provide a 14-bed dementia unit extension of the rest home and the next step, after prenailing off-site, will see the structure itself begin to rise.

The project is being financed both commercially and by local fundraising, with substantial input from The Den, a second-hand outlet for donated goods. Stalls and market days and straight donations from service groups ranging from Rotary and Lions to the Rapid Relief Team have involved a wide section of the Otamatea community.

“The community target to raise $500,000 of the building costs stands

at $345k, with funds to add to this indicated during the next eight weeks,” said Mr Fergus.

“The Give a Little page sits at $700 and is growing in momentum. Once the floors are down, we’ll have spent close to $800k. So we are getting a lot closer, and my plan is to have it finished in July 2020.

Every bit helps and we are closing in towards our target. We sincerely thank all those that have contributed to the fundraising thus far. The community support has been vital.”

Matakohe’s Kauri Museum has many wintertime activities planned despite the cold, and plenty of reasons to celebrate with a raft of websites and travel guides once again hailing it as a ‘must see’ cultural and historical attraction.

The Raupo Drainage Committee is the longest serving committee in the district and was formerly known as the Raupo Drainage Board. During the years its role and responsibilities have varied, but its primary function is to help govern the Raupo Drainage District by advising the Kaipara District Council and acting as a voice for Raupo ratepayers.

The election rules stipulate that council ‘shall establish and maintain a committee to be known as The Raupo Drainage Committee, which shall comprise not less than four persons who are ratepayers in respect of the Raupo

Drainage District.’ Both councillors and ratepayers sit on the committee, working cooperatively. To be nominated, or sign as the nominator, you must be a ratepayer with ‘Raupo Drainage Targeted Rate’ on your rates invoice.

Nomination forms will be mailed out to all targeted ratepayers from Friday, July 12 and close on Friday, August 9. Election day is on Saturday, September 7.

Northlanders have every right to be appalled by the government’s mishandling of the meningococcal outbreak. It was misleading, it was inept, and it was dangerous.

Only now has it come out how bad it really was.

When the outbreak occurred up here in November, the government for some inexplicable reason (still not fully explained) was slow to react. People’s lives were endangered right there.

However, it got worse. We were then told that there were not enough lifesaving vaccines to go around. There were only 20,000 vaccines in the country, they said. Under fives could have them, teenagers could have them.

Everybody else at risk would have to do without them.

Really? Now we know the truth.

The Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield has told the select committee looking into the outbreak and the government’s handling of it, that Pharmac knew at the time that there were thousands more vaccines available and certainly enough for a full vaccine programme. So, why weren’t they used?

Cost — apparently. Dr Bloomfield told media last week that cost was a factor in deciding whether to purchase enough vaccines for all under 20s.

Later, he reiterated that.

Then to compound an already bad situation, health minister David Clark, whose only swift action on the matter seems to be his duck for cover, told media that part of the reason for a reduced vaccination campaign was that there weren’t enough people to carr y out the vaccinations.

Our district health board has since confirmed that was not true.

Now, finally, we are told that there are thousands of vaccines left over.

These could be used for the 5 to 12year olds who missed out; instead they will likely be left to expire.

What a debacle.

David Clark needs to stop making excuses and admit that the government has failed the people of Northland. ¢

Grand plans are well underway for the now iconic Waipu Museum Art ’n Tartan Wearable Art Awards, which take place in July in Waipu’s Celtic Barn.

This year, well-known theatre director and actor, Stuart Devenie has come on board to direct the show.

Stuart’s theatrical career spans many years on stage and screen.

His many attributes include artistic director of Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North and senior educator at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School. He is also well known for his appearances in many film and television productions.

“I am very excited to have been invited to direct the ninth annual Waipu Museum Art ’n Tartan presentation,” says Stuart. “It is a great opportunity to work with such a dedicated group of local volunteers and artists who have built, over the past decade, such a high-quality regional and national event.”

Managing director of Auckland design company Icon Textiles, Claire Drake, has also joined the team as production manager. Preliminary judging of the entries has already taken place, and audiences are going to be enthralled with the glittering display of creativity onstage. Competition is fierce with around forty designers vying for this year’s prize pool of $16,000.

Dargaville’s Menz Shed was established to provide fellowship and a place to meet for men who enjoy working with their hands.

Now, the men of the shed are putting their skills to work for some worthy causes, starting with pest eradication in our forests.

Menz Shed spokesperson Barry Jones, says that the initiative to build traps for the conservation department is just one of many projects which benefit the community here. Only a few years old, the shed is filled with tools and raw materials, and there is a membership of more than 40 people.

Menz Sheds have sprung up around the country to provide friendship, purpose and creative space for men, especially those of retirement age and older.

In Dargaville, Barry Jones, Dave Webb and their mates are keen to assist with woodworking projects as varies as fixing up donated furniture for the Hospice shop to sell, constructing outdoor furniture, such as that donated recently to the Baylys Beach walkway, or completing that order for 200 pest traps. They also create garden art, soapbox racers and toys, repair wooden items and more. Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Scouts have partnered up with Triple One Care to organise a potentially life saving outdoor first aid course on July 13–14.

p Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Scouts plan a two-day outdoor first aid course to raise funds and educate the public

Not only will this course teach medical first response skills; it’s also a fundraiser helping get the scouts to this year’s jamboree.

Regional scout leader Bruce Ferguson says that this opportunity is well advised for both average citizens who enjoy the outdoors, and those who work there.

“Previous courses have included forestry professionals, for example.

This time we may have members of the pony club joining in, so we can arrange training scenarios to be appropriate.”

Hikers, farmers, trail riders and rock climbers are among other examples of those who may benefit from the two-day

course, which will be run by a paramedic with more than 25 years experience.

He’s the same man who was called on to train the prime minister’s bodyguards in 2018.

Completing the course covers NZQA 6401, 6402, 6400 and 424, all part of being first aid qualified. Funds raised thanks to people attending the course will assist the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Scouts in their journey to Jamboree, where they will team up with Horahora and Dargaville to represent the midnorth in a tradition which dates back to 1937. Dargaville’s volunteer fire brigade has gone through some changes recently, with new volunteers coming through a cadet programme instigated earlier this year, and a new deputy fire chief assuming responsibility as second in command.

Important information about trees and powerlines Trees too close to powerlines can be a danger to the public and property.

Trees and other types of vegetation like bamboo and shrubs should be regularly maintained, so they do not grow into powerlines.

If trees are not maintained this can cause problems in high winds and storms – it can lead to power cuts and is a potential fire risk.

A person who touches a tree that’s in contact with a powerline can get an electric shock.

Power outages due to trees in powerlines cause major inconvenience to people, businesses and the community, and in some cases can also be life threatening for those who rely on electricity.

Your role in keeping trees clear of powerlines There’s a legal requirement under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003 to keep your trees clear of our powerlines, to make sure they don’t affect our electricity supply or anyone’s safety.

It’s your responsibility to keep trees you own trimmed and away from our powerlines.

We regularly carry out tree surveys and inspect our powerlines, and we’ll do our best to let you know if your tree is getting too close to the lines. But we also need you to keep an eye out too.

p Learning experiences don’t come more realistic than a controlled blaze set to be tackled by these Dargaville firefighters

Long term brigade volunteer and now deputy chief fire officer Jason Campbell says that the recruitment drive and subsequent training sessions, held on Mondays, have been a great success.

Recently trainees and seasoned firefighters alike took part in an exercise in which a planned and controlled fire was lit in a condemned building, with firefighters on hand to extinguish the blaze as a learning experience and very realistic drill.

Three young people have stepped up to join the brigade thanks to the

recent recruitment programme, and are preparing now for a November training course in Wellington. A further three ‘up and coming’ cadets are too young as yet to join up but are making excellent progress.

As fire brigades all over New Zealand look to engage a new generation of volunteers to help save lives in their communities, this ongoing initiative has been left open-ended. If you or someone you know would like to sign up as a fire cadet or as a firefighting volunteer, please contact the Dargaville brigade. ¢

We can provide you with a list of authorised contractors who can trim around our powerlines. In most cases, we will meet the reasonable costs of the first tree trimming.

If your tree is growing into The Notice Zone, we may send you a hazard warning notice advising that the tree needs trimming before it becomes a problem.

You can arrange for the trimming of a tree in The Notice Zone, provided your chosen contractor is Northpower approved.

Please contact us at least three working days before the work begins to obtain this.

We will need to know the tree location and details of when the work will be done.

Don’t get closer than 4 metres to powerlines For safety reasons it’s important to note that only Northpower or an arborist approved to work around our network can trim a tree within the Minimum Approach Distance - within 4 metres of our lines.

Not maintaining your trees can be costly If you receive a Cut or Trim Notice from Northpower, legally you need to: 1. ensure that the tree(s) is cut or trimmed to outside The Notice Zone within the required timeframe, and 2. advise us of the time and location of the cutting or trimming of the tree at least 3 working days beforehand.

It is an offence not do this and you could be fined up to $10,000 plus a further fine of up to $500 per day for a continuing offence under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003.

You could also be liable for costs if our powerlines or equipment is damaged by your tree. It’s your decision whether you want to continue to maintain a tree, or have it removed.

Environmental excellence recognised at awards A kaupapa of environmental sustainability is one of the attributes that recently saw Comrie Park Kindergarten judged Supreme Award winner at Northland Regional Council's inaugural Environmental Awards.

The small country kindergarten aims to grow and develop lifelong learners through its philosophy of ‘Nga Kākano Āpōpō – The Seeds of Tomorrow’.

A month on from the win, head teacher Anna Alexander says the kindergarten’s team and the rural community it supports are still thrilled.

“We’re extremely proud of the programme we provide here for our tamariki and whānau and to be recognised with these awards is truly humbling.”

Comrie Park was also one of eight category winners at the awards.

Friends of Matakohe-Limestone Island Society (FOMLI) topped the community category, transforming the landscape of the island through hard graft and strong, collaborative community relationships.

The day was part of the Freshwater Improvement Fund dune lakes project, administered by the Ministry for the Environment.

Kaipara’s most famous export, the kumara, will be in the spotlight during Matariki celebrations in Dargaville on July 6, alongside celebrity chef Michael Van de Elzen.

E

utopia in central Kaiwaka has at last opened again as a cafe after a massive 5 year rebuild. It has been a long and challenging journey, but over this time the place has been transformed into a mixed media extravaganza. Funky joinery, carved concrete walls and facades, elaborate sculptural pieces, glass, ceramics, steel, stone and plenty of mosaics as well as unusual lighting adorn the buildings. Most of art work is inspired by New Zealand's flora and fauna intermingled with traditional and mythological imagery from Aotearoa. The project is still a work in progress with at least another years work.

with some quirky differences. The cafe was also lucky to have Matt Watt, recently back home from Melbourne.

His passion for coffee and its presentation is evident and he takes great pride in his art. The cafe is very happy to work together with Rush coffee, a local roaster, using their organic blend. Rush have been a great help getting the coffee operation set up. The coffee is excellent and Matt has recieved many compliments. The cafe has its own blend tumeric and chai lattes which are becoming very popular. There is a selection of alternative milks, coconut, macadamia, soy or almond.

There have been two key people responsible for helping get the cafe side up and running. Rudy the chef, whose passion for food started as a child on the streets of Istanbul. He has owned a number of cafes and restaurants in Auckland and wanted to use that experience to help get Eutopia cafe operating. He has been working long hours to present food that compliments the place itself and takes great pride in the quality and presentation of his dishes. He is passionate about the health benefits of food and nutrition, this is reflected in the menu which has a mediteranean flavour

The cafe is implimenting ecological priniples as much as possible such as low waste, using organic and local produce where possible. Most of the fruit, vegetables and herbs are sourced from local organic gardens. They use only free range eggs. The milk is from Bella Vacca jerseys in Kerikeri. Simply pasturised it comes in 1 liter glass bottles which are refilled, no plastic waste!

There is still a lot of unrealised potential at Eutopia and a lot is still planned, this is just the beginning, so watch this space.

The sweet tuber will feature as the ingredient of choice at the first of what may become annual kumara cook-offs, where locals match culinary skills for the crown of kumara chef of the year. It will take place at the Central Hotel at 2.30pm on July 6, with judging at 3.30pm. The famed restauranteur and host of popular TV series The Food Truck will help pick a winner in a contest open to all comers.

Organised as par t of the Dargaville Community Development Board’s Matariki celebrations, the cook-off will p Celebrity chef Michael Van de Elzen is coming to allow home chefs to create a Dargaville for Matariki dish with kumara as the keystone ingredient. These will be judged and with whiskers, eyes, legs, antennae or tasted as festivities continue in and fins. To enter, craft a savoury or sweet around the venue. Kids are encouraged treat or a ‘critter’ and be at the Central to join a contest for the under-11s Hotel by 2.30pm this Saturday. Kaipara at the same time, making a crafty Kumara has generously donated prizes ‘kumara critter’ out of a sweet spud for the winners. ¢

THE RECIPE FOR PERFECT MOJITO COCKTAILS Ingredients: • 45ml Bacardi Carta Blanca Rum • 1/2 a fresh lime • 2tsp caster sugar

• 10 fresh mint leaves • Soda water

Method: 1. Cut 1/2 a lime and put in glass 2. Add 2tsp caster sugar and muddle 3. Add 10 torn mint leaves 4. Add 45ml Bacardi Carta Blanca and ice 5. Top with soda water 6. Garnish with mint

Kaipara Kumara Cake Line the bottoms of 3 x 20cm cake tins with baking paper.

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C (325°F) Gas 3.

2. Put the sugar, eggs and oil in a freestanding electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) and beat until all the ingredients are well incorporated (don’t worry if the mixture looks slightly split). Slowly add the flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, salt and vanilla extract and continue to beat until well mixed.

3. Stir in the grated kumara and walnuts by hand until they are all evenly dispersed. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tins and smooth over with a palette knife. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and the sponge bounces back when touched.

Leave the cakes to cool slightly in the tins before turning out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

INGREDIENTS: • 300g Soft Light Brown Sugar • 3 Eggs • 300ml Sunflower Oil • 300g Plain Flour • 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda • 1 tsp Baking Powder • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon – plus extra to decorate • ½ tsp Ground Ginger • ½ tsp Salt • ¼ tsp Vanilla Extract • 300g Beauregard (Orange) Kumara, grated • 100g Shelled Walnuts – chopped, plus extra, chopped and whole – to decorate FOR THE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING: • 600g Icing Sugar – sifted • 100g Unsalted Butter – at room temperature • 250g Cream Cheese – cold 4. For the Cream Cheese Frosting: Beat the icing sugar and butter together in a freestanding electric mixer with a paddle attachment (or use a handheld electric whisk) on medium-slow speed until the mixture comes together and is well mixed.

5. Add the cream cheese in one go and beat until it is completely incorporated. Turn the mixer up to medium-high speed.

6. Continue beating until the frosting is light and fluffy, at least 5 minutes. Do not overbeat, as it can quickly become runny.

7. When the cakes are cold, put one on a cake stand and spread about one-quarter of the Cream Cheese Frosting over it with a palette knife. Place a second cake on top and spread another quarter of the frosting over it.

8. Top with the last cake and spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides. Finish with walnuts and a light sprinkling of cinnamon.

New Zealand remains a dominant leader in dairy farming, thanks to a variety of factors. Keeping the Kiwi ‘brand’ at the forefront of consumer’s minds is not the job of our productive herds or even of the farmers who work hard to fill those tankers and meet quality guidelines. It’s the finished products that chefs and consumers talk about, which set the gold standard.

A good example is cheese. It’s a dairy product with a rich history and an even bigger world championship. On July 30, in Nantwich, Cheshire (home of the Cheshire cheese, naturally) more than 5,000 cheeses from 27 nations will be judged under a big-top sized 85,000 square foot marquee.

The old original recipe

Some things in life well outside the realm of internal combustion can be improved by the application of what some people call Chapman’s Law. It’s more of a guideline, really, but the big name behind Lotus achieved remarkable success with it. Simplify, then add lightness.

Colin Chapman applied this adage to some of the most fearsomely efficient racing cars of the 20th century, and his name lives on through a company that produce machines, which are a joy to drive. You can simplify and add lightness in other areas of life to just as sublime a result — packing holiday luggage, baking a cake. In the case of Suzuki, creating the perfect bike for the farm and lifestyle block.

It’s a recipe that’s been around for a fair few years, but like the contents of the Edmond’s book, it’s still popular.

The DR200 has seen minor changes here and here, to what this metaphor insists we call the ‘icing’, the switch to single shock rear suspension, or the fitment of brighter halogen lighting, for example. Underneath, the same 200cc engine pumps out a lot of useful torque, even if it’s no speed machine. It’s still equipped with a carburettor because it’s easy and reliable for a single cylinder, single overhead cam set-up. It still has a rear drum brake so that it won’t get clogged with dirt and mud.
