The odds of young Te Ariki Irving winning the one-in-New-Zealand top prize in a competition run by Milo were long, but his proved to be the winning entry. As a consequence, his prize was presented by a delegation including Goodhue, who came to Pioneer Rugby Park ready to sign autographs and get in a round of touch rugby with the fans. “It’s good to be back on Pioneer Park,” said Goodhue. “The last time I played here was in a Northland under 14s game some time ago. Report backs Northport plan

Northport’s proposal for a bigger container port with the addition of a shipyard and floating drydock highlights the socioeconomic potential of the planned expansion for the wider Northland region, says a new report.

Undertaken by Polis Consulting Group, the report investigates Northport’s Vision for Growth, which seeks to expand the container port to the east and the addition of a shipyard and floating drydock to the west of the current site. It estimates that approximately 1,500 new jobs could be created by 2060 through the expansion, along with an additional estimated 1,135 new jobs through a shipyard and dry dock development.

Acting CEO of Northland Inc Vaughan Cooper says the report findings create a strong economic case for the expansion.

“Job creation of this scale will have ripple effects across our communities while also providing facilities to increase exports and service vessels from outside of the region — both of which will have positive impacts on the region’s economy.”

The proposed new shipyard would encompass a 250m floating dry dock, associated berthage extensions, and industrial activities. This development, along with associated marine clusters at Marsden Point and Port Nikau, could provide needed facilities for naval training

The Taniwha turned out in force recently to give a boost to Dargaville youngsters. The squad hit Pioneer Park to share some of the tips and tricks which make them top athletes and

even organised a game of Rippa Rugby as part of the day’s schedule. Up-andcoming rugby players of tomorrow got to meet some of their heroes and envision themselves at the top level of the game.

Then it was on to a full squad training session at Southern’s Te Kōpuru-based field the following day. The locals fired up the barbecue and brought their families along to watch the Taniwha go through their drills and paces. The Taniwha was welcomed with a brief pōwhiri before taking to the field for training, watched by a crowd of clearly thrilled young supporters. ¢

Comedian Guy Williams has admitted to appreciating the natural beauty and ‘super welcoming’ people of Dargaville following the broadcast of an episode of his television series focussed on the town.

Williams’ irreverent humour sees him look at some of Dargaville’s local characters, customs and businesses through a comic lens. Still, he admits that ultimately the town by the muddy river has “stolen his heart”.

“Obviously, the people were great.

Dargaville is a weird mix of conservative religious types, relaxed hippies, conspiracy theorists and kūmara farmers, but in the three days I spent there, I found them all to be wonderful,” said Williams in an opinion piece supporting his television series New Zealand Today.

“I’m not sure what it is about small towns that are often the butt of jokes, but it brings a group together and really brings out the best in people. Everyone in Dargaville was super welcoming and inclusive.”

During the episode, Guy sets out to reinstate the Kumara Queen beauty contest and talks to original event organiser Margaret Tier and other local ‘celebrities’.

He engages in a fight over classic rock with New Zealand’s youngest rock DJ Seth Eve-Rumsey. He has his bluff called by business owner Jonette Bartlett, with the consequence of having to try on a ‘mankini’ in the style of fictional Kazakhstani journalist Borat.

Filming for the episode, number seven in the third series of Williams’ successful New Zealand Today satirical comic travelogue, was completed in April, with the first broadcast via the Three network’s streaming service last Thursday. The episode is currently available via the ThreeNow website. ¢

In the recent report to elected members, it was noted that planning and design were completed by June this year, and construction is green-lit for September, with a completion date as early as November 2022.

In April this year, the KDC approved an additional $265,000 to complete the project, adding to the close to $5 million allocated by the Provincial Growth Fund for wharf building and restoration around the Kaipara. The budget for the Poutō wharf is currently reported as $2.66 million. Currently,

the largest area of public concern involves the widening of beach access to the proposed wharf site. Mr Foschieri’s report noted the Northern Transport Alliance and KDC are establishing a dedicated project team for widening the entrance to the beach closest to the wharf amid community safety concerns. It follows a commitment made by mayor Jason Smith to Waikaretu Marae. ¢

Freshwater in Te Taitokerau Changes to freshwater management Two years ago the Government released their vision for halting the degradation of our freshwater systems and key to this vision is the concept of Te Mana o te Wai. Te Mana o te Wai refers to the vital importance of water. When managing freshwater, it ensures the health and well-being of the water is protected first, then human health needs are provided for before enabling other uses of water.

The Government has also set some ‘bottom lines’ we will need to meet for a range of measures of water quality, such as E.Coli (an indicator for disease causing organisms) and water clarity (an indicator of sediment).

We all want future generations to be able to enjoy clean water and the natural environments that healthy water supports.

It’s now our job to work with communities to prepare a plan for how we’ll get there – our Freshwater Plan.

The Freshwater Plan will include new rules for activities that impact on water quality and freshwater ecosystems. Right now, we’re doing

We’ve set up two advisory groups to help develop the draft Freshwater Plan. One is a group of tangata whenua freshwater technical experts, and the other includes representatives from primary sector organisations (such as Dairy NZ, Federated Farmers, Northland Wood Council and Horticulture NZ). We’re also talking with community groups, government agencies, local councils, hapū and iwi.

Te Mana o te Wai is a concept that puts the well-being and health of our streams, rivers, lakes, aquafers, wetlands and estuaries at the heart of how we must manage our freshwater resources. It’s a holistic approach which is all about restoring and preserving the balance between water, the wider environment, and the community. While it puts the health of water first before all other considerations, it doesn’t mean that in every case the water needs to be restored to a pristine state before the other needs can be looked at.

Greenhouse gas fund open Theatre double feature  by Paul Campbell

Kaipara agriculture businesses are invited to apply to a Ministry for Primary Industries’ Greenhouse Gas Inventory Research fund that opened on July 14 with $2.1 million on offer, seeking research proposals to maintain and improve agriculture, forestry and land-use.

Dargaville Little Theatre will host not one but two TheatreFest events this year, as Theatre New Zealand picks the local playhouse as the venue for regional and national quarterfinal action.

“The inventory calculates and records greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in New Zealand, as well as carbon sequestration from forests,” says MPI’s director of inve stment programme s , Steve Penno.

“It will be used to account for mitigation technologies as they are developed and implemented on farms in New Zealand and an important tool in enabling New Zealand’s reporting to the New Zealand Greenhouse Gas Inventory and the United Nations under the Paris Climate Agreement.”

This year MPI is seeking proposals on nine priority areas, ranging from p methane to the effects of plants on emissions. “Accurate information is essential for developing policy and verifying that we’re on the right track in efforts across Aotearoa to reduce agricultural emissions,” says Mr Penno.

“The fund provides a point of focus and coordination for world-leading climate change research. As one of the only developed countries with a largely pasture-based agricultural economy, we’re also able to share our research outcomes with less developed countries

with similar agricultural sectors to boost their knowledge.

“The research generated through this fund provides us with invaluable baseline data to continue efforts to mitigate New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.”

The funding round is open on August 12, and successful proposals are expected to be announced in October.

“It’s adjudicated, and it’s a competition, but it’s also a great night of entertainment,” says DLT spokesperson Deborah Steel. She is also one of the cocreators of a play featured in the festival.

TheatreFest is a tradition in Dargaville, with the little theatre hosting several annual regional events. This year, however, the competition on Saturday, July 30, at 7pm will only be the beginning.

A selection of plays will be performed for the audience and scrutinised by adjudicator Johnny Givens, with the winners going on to the upper North Island regionals, held in Dargaville on August 13 and 14. The two DLT casts taking part are quietly confident.

“We’re always hopeful,” says Deborah. “Theatre is, of course, quite subjective, and there’s no knowing what the adjudicator will enjoy most.

However, we’ve all put in a lot of effort and creativity, and both plays feature an interesting concept.”

In 2018, Deborah’s piece The Rumour won the prestigious Olga E Harding Award at the TheatreFest nationals, scooping the title of best play.

This time around, Deborah has collaborated with talented local composer Julianne Parkinson to craft a

musical drama dealing with the weighty subject of mental health. A second presentation from the DLT team was rewritten extensively from a concept developed for the recent 24-hour play challenge. Other teams will also bring their best. For example, the actors from Diocesan College, will travel from Auckland to take to the stage. ¢

A group founded to inject more music and merriment into the Dargaville cultural scene is debuting its second event as an opportunity to get social and have fun despite winter chills.

p Dargaville’s waterfront will rock this weekend as a pair of top DJs transform the Northern Wairoa Boating Club into a nautical themed dance hall

Beats and Barnacles is the name of the nautical-themed dance party coming this week to the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, with a pair of top-flight DJs commanding the turntables.

“It’s a chance to get out and socialise, have a good time and celebrate,” says event co-organiser Roxanne Kelly.

“The concept came out of a group of like-minded events promotion people who came together in Dargaville. Our first community get-together was the very successful Te Kōpuru Matariki event, and now we’re pleased to bring a DJ and dance night to the waterfront.”

Big Stuff’ Sausi are veterans on the turntables, rocking venues in Auckland before moving to Dargaville. The pair will keep the crowd moving with classics and favourites late into the night.

“They were both very keen to get involved,” says Roxanne. “Kirsty is a real ideas person who wants to get things done. In support of the music, we’re decorating the NWBC in a suitably nautical theme and offering an open licence and a special seafood menu.”

The fun begins at 5pm on Saturday, July 30, with dinner and drinks, followed by the chance to dance away the winter blues amid friendly company. ¢

Rosamund Anne McCarthy began her time in New Zealand in a wheelchair, went on to work for a prime minister, and ended up founding her own family farm.

Rosamund was not short on grit.

Despite suffering from rheumatism, she set out on the Corinthic bound for New Zealand in 1911, leaving her young fiance Con behind to sell up his farm assets. However, just six weeks before Con was to land in New Zealand, Rosamund took a turn for the worse.

She was hospitalised in Rotorua to take the healing waters and learned to walk again, going from a wheelchair to crutches and finally to a cane. Doctors were surprised when she was able to walk to Rotorua railway station to meet her husbandto-be.

The young couple took employment at Ruatuna, working for the Coates family. Con worked the farm while p Rose was the cook, laundress and housekeeper for the whole homestead. Soon the couple won a plot of land by ballot on the Raupo Flats.

The land was poor, but it was a case of ‘farm or forfeit’. Con and Rose pitched in with determination, often pulling stumps by moonlight when the other work of the day was done. Gordon Coates donated a cow, which Rose said would have been lost in the swamp were it not for the bell around its neck.

DELICIOUSNESS Chicken and Leek Pie Perfect weather for pies at the moment, but this is just one of those recipes you can have at any time of the year with a salad in the summer or mashed potatoes and broccoli at the cooler times of the year.

INGREDIENTS 400 grams spaghetti 250 grams rindless loin (back) Maungi Meats bacon, chopped 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 4 egg yolks ½ cup thickened cream (35% fat) ¾ cup finely grated parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf (Italian) parsley METHOD Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the packet directions or until al dente, stirring often to prevent sticking. Drain, reserving some of the cooking water.

Meanwhile, cook the Maungi Meats bacon in a large non-stick frying pan over medium– high heat for 6–8 minutes until browned and slightly crisp.

Add the garlic and cook a further minute or until fragrant.

Combine the egg yolks, cream and parmesan in a medium-sized bowl.

Season with salt and pepper.

Return the spaghetti to the saucepan with a tablespoon or two of the cooking water. Add the bacon and garlic to the pan. Remove pan from heat and mix the egg mixture through until well coated and creamy. Stir in the parsley.

INGREDIENTS

1–2 tbsp olive oil 1 large leek 1 medium carrot 500g chicken breast 2 medium zucchini 300ml chicken stock 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard (optional) 2 tbsp sour cream or cream 1 sheet puff pastry METHOD Heat the oil in a frypan over a medium heat.

Slice the leek thinly and fry the leek in the oil.

Finely dice the carrot and add to the pan. Continue to sauté the leek and carrot until both are tender and fragrant (approx five minutes).

Dice the chicken. Add this to the frypan and seal the chicken; it does not need to be browned all over, it will cook in the stock — which you add next.

Add the stock, grate the zucchini and add this too. Bring to the boil, then reduce

to a simmer. Leave the mix to simmer for 20–30 mins; you want the liquid to reduce right down as this will be the filling of your pie. If it’s too liquidy, you end up with pie soup! You will think there is not enough liquid, but as the zucchini cooks, it releases moisture too, so try to wait before you add extra stock.

Once the chicken and veggie mix has reduced down, turn off the heat and stir through the mustard and sour cream or cream. Grease a pie dish and transfer the chicken and veggie mix into the pie dish.

Top with puff pastry. Pierce the pastry with a knife to create a few holes for steam to escape, and if you have the inclination, brush the pastry with a little melted butter.

Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden.

This pie is very versatile. You can add a ½ cup of mushrooms and two rashers of bacon and omit the carrot and zucchini if you want. You may need to add a little flour if the liquid is too runny.

Serve with extra parmesan cheese sprinkled over the top.

FISH AND KUMARA CURRY Ingredients (serves 4) Paste

3cm knob ginger, peeled 3 cloves garlic, peeled 2 green chillies, cut in half with seeds removed ½ tsp salt 4 tomatoes 1 onion, peeled and sliced 1 tbsp butter 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tbsp ground coriander ½ tsp turmeric 2 red kumara - peeled and diced 400g can coconut milk 350g snapper, cut into 3cm pieces

Method 1. Using a mortar and pestle, mash the 4 paste ingredients together to form a paste. Set the paste aside. Blend the tomatoes and onion together in the bowl of a food processor until the mixture is smooth.

2. Heat the butter in a large fry pan and add the tomato mixture. Fry the mixture until most of the liquid has evaporated, then add the paste and cook until it is fragrant – about 3 minutes. Add the spices, stir to combine and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the kumara and coconut milk. Reduce the heat and cook gently for 20 minutes, until the kumara is almost cooked. The sauce should thicken naturally.

3. Add the fish to the curry sauce and cover the pan. Cook the fish until it is just beginning to flake. Serve with a squeeze of lemon and boiled rice.

kaiwaka Gourmet purveyors of fine crafted cheeses Maasdam Cheese Potato Wedges INGREDIENTS 2 small potatoes, cut into wedges 2 tablespoons melted butter 1 tablespoon olive oil or oil 2 cloves of garlic (lehsun), grated 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 cup shredded Maasdam cheese Salt to taste PREPARATION Mix the melted butter, olive oil, garlic, rosemary, crushed pepper and salt in a bowl.

Add the potatoes and toss well so as to completely coat with the mixture.

Place the potatoes in a baking tray in a single layer and bake in a pre-heated oven at 205C (400F) for 20 to 25 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked, stirring once in between.

Sprinkle the cheese on top and mix well and bake for another 3 to 4 minutes.

Serve immediately

Ward locked down as Covid surges  by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s general hospital ward was closed to visitors last week due to the threat of a spike in Covid cases, with the virus detected among patients.

It makes Dargaville Hospital the second Northland healthcare centre struck by the new wave of Covid-19 variants after Whangārei Hospital’s orthopaedic ward was shut down to visitors last week.

“As soon as there were patients testing positive in the ward, it was closed to visitors and the plan to manage the outbreak was initiated,” says service manager Jen Thomas.

“This included infection prevention control measures and informing the whānau of patients of what was happening. Measures such as temporarily closing wards are put in place when there is a spike of a contagious virus or infection within a localised area.”

It’s not a response to Covid alone. In recent years, similar measures to ensure patient safety have been enacted to shut out norovirus or influenza outbreaks.

Currently, there is a significant community spread of Covid-19 in Northland, with more than 220 new cases being reported each day last week. It comes at the same time as a surge in cold and flu virus cases and cold, rainy weather.

“While most people who are healthy and vaccinated will have a milder illness,

Some of Northland’s worst weeds and invasive plants are under focus with free workshops advising how people can deal with them about to get underway across the region.

Decade of rural support honoured  by Andy Bryenton

The highest honour of the body governing New Zealand agricultural and pastoral shows has been awarded to a local stalwart of the scene.

New Zealand’s Royal Agricultural Society (RAC) is the overarching body governing local A&P shows, preserving this slice of Kiwi heritage and rewarding those who give generously of their time and skills. On rare occasions, the Northern District of the RAC hands down medals to be awarded to deserving folk in the Kaipara area.

Four years ago, such a medal was awarded to long-serving Northern Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Association treasurer Neville Collins.

Now the opportunity to celebrate another individual instrumental to the success of the Northern Wairoa show has come about. Show president Richard Alspach was pleased to announce that a RAC medal has been awarded to Terry North.

“It’s been probably 10 years since Terry took on the job of organising the sheep side of our business,” says Richard.

“During that time, the sheep enterprise has gone from being just a way of keeping the grounds tidy to a mainstay of our financial wellbeing. Unlike a lot of shows, ours is financially viable, and this is largely on the back of sheep.”

Richard said Terry sources replacement sheep, organises ‘tame farmers’ to graze

surplus lambs for fattening and manages the culling programme and the drenching.

He is always on hand with his dogs to bring the sheep in to do work on them and keep them healthy.

“Terry coordinates a team effort, and we should mention his team with appreciation,” says Richard. “Thank you to Rochelle Clearly, who does the dayto-day work, and Vicki Bridge, always a willing assistant.

“Thanks, too, to Jim Comrie, who stands in with his dogs whenever he is needed, and picks up a handpiece without too much prompting and Neville Osbourne, who manages to fit in the shearing into his busy schedule. We also can’t forget the dogs — it’s a pleasure to watch them work.”

Terry has taken it upon himself to make sure the shearing pavilion is ready for the competition on show day. His attention to detail in this task is legendary. On show day, he is the chief steward of the beef section and is nearly always one of the last to leave, being involved in the general clean-up after the show.

In his own right, Terry is a farmer, as well as serving as the local Affco agent.

Protecting threatened species in Waipoua Forest.

To protect the forest of Waipoua, including North Island Kōkako, North Island brown kiwi and Kukupa (native wood pigeon), the Department of Conservation (DOC) Kauri Coast district intends to carry out aerial control over approx. 16,028 ha Waipoua Forest. (Refer to the application area on map).

Description of the area The Waipoua Forest is nationally significant with unique, endangered plants and animals including kauri, kōkako, kukupa and kiwi.

The operational area (Waipoua Forest) is south of Waimamaku and north of Dargaville.

Why we are doing this control This work is to protect native species at risk. Our native birds, and their eggs are decimated when rat populations get too high. Rats also compete with native animals for food and prevent growth of seedlings.

Possum browse on forest plants can be significant in this forest. Large old emergent trees, such as totara and rata, and key canopy and subcanopy trees, such as kohekohe and mahoe, are severely impacted by uncontrolled possum populations. Possums also raid nests for eggs and chicks and compete with native animals for food. Reducing possum numbers allows the forest habitat to recover.

This control works Both possum and rat activity were monitored in this forest before and after the aerial 1080 operations of 2005, 2011 and 2014. Each of these operations were successful in reducing possum and rat activity to very low levels.

Monitoring of vulnerable native trees, including rata and kohekohe, showed a strong recovery after these previous aerial operations. Monitoring of kiwi and kokako also showed a significant recovery.

Method of control DOC has worked closely with its Treaty Partner, Te Iwi o Te Roroa, on desired outcomes and consulted with stakeholders and adjoining landowners. Between 1 August 2022 and 1 October 2022, DOC and its contractor EcoFX will apply baits containing biodegrable1080 over the area shown on the map. A pre-feed of non-toxic baits will occur first which will prime the rodents and possums to eat the pellets.

The toxic cereal bait pellets contain 0.15% of 1080, are cylindrical and approximately 2 cm in diameter. They are dyed green to deter birds and contain a cinnamon lure to attract rodents.

Non-toxic pre-feed cylindrical pellets are approximately 2 cm in diameter and sandy coloured (notdyed).

The aerial operation uses calibrated buckets and GIS mapping technology to ensure bait drops in the designated area. Please see map attached.

The pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: •
