p Wild weather did nothing to deter the intrepid performers of Circus Kumarani in Dargaville, who helped welcome in the new season with a Matariki celebration on Saturday. First up came a selection of performances including object manipulation (the technical term for juggling), slapstick, hoop and aerial silks, many of which were undertaken by members of Kumarani’s recent school holiday programme. Then came live music by Olly Knox, and as the sun set, it was time to light up the glowing and flaming props to drive away the shadows of a chilly evening. Of special note was the presence of Circus Kumarani’s inaugural ‘artist in residence’. Kit has helped run the school holiday programme, bringing talents in live performance from overseas via the Cirque Lemuria, a boat-based troupe of entertainers who made headlines by being ‘stuck’ there during lockdown, but who used the time to craft a brand new show for Kiwi audiences.

We are grateful to have support from Scott Collins, the Northland Women’s Development manager and the community came out in support. We had a great time and are loving playing together as a team considering we only had a couple of weeks to prepare after Covid with new players on board. p While there may not have been an official Anzac poppy appeal this year due to Covid, there was no shortage of creative ways dreamed up by our community to pay homage to the bravery and sacrifice of Kiwi service people past and present. Wreaths of poppies, garden displays and a driveway-end dawn vigil were just a few. The McDermott family of Baylys Beach took things a step further, however. Young Cory, Blake and Sarsha set up a ‘production line’ making poppies out of egg carton segments, painting them by hand and giving them to mum and dad Annice and Shane to dry and deliver. The good folks at Sharkys swapped the handmade poppies for donations over their counter. Last week the McDermotts donated the $175 dollars raised to the Dargaville RSA, where it was most gratefully received by secretary Sue Philips.

A total of $5.5 million in three grants from the government’s Provincial Growth Fund has revitalised developing community projects in Maungaturoto and Paparoa and widened horizons for The Kauri Museum at Matakohe.

This effectively pre–empts the hikoi and ignores a political rahui declared over the dump site by Kaipara iwi.

Fight the Tip member Mikaera Miru says the rahui being ignored was “devastating. It shows how out of touch Waste Management actually is. It is the second biggest harbour on the planet, and we need to look after it.”

Apart from a perceived pollution threat, the dump site is expected to add up to 450 waste vehicle return trips a day from Auckland to the Dome Valley on a road regarded as deadly with major and fatal accidents recorded.

“We’re going to continue fighting until we stop this dead in its tracks,” Mr Miru told protesters.

Dr Smith told the gathering in Aotea Square that the Kaipara District Council was unanimous in the fight against the landfill.

“This is on a scale that New Zealand has never seen. For all of NZ, we need

to be doing better than what is proposed for this landfill.”

The march organisers had expected to meet Auckland Mayor Phil Goff, to present a petition against the dump, but instead, Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore apologised for his absence and collected the documents.

Ngati Whatua leader Dame Naida Glavish brought her grandchildren on the hikoi signalling hope for the future. ”I don’t want them inheriting the pollution and the abuse of the environment from (Auckland),” she said.

“I grew up on the shores of the Kaipara Harbour. From that, the Hoteo River runs a little creek called Waikeri.

That’s where we used to bathe when I was a child, and that runs right in front of my marae, Puatahi, and it’s under threat.”

Resource consent hearings will be heard in the Warkworth Town Hall beginning on Monday, November 9. ¢

Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones announced the funding of $3m for The Kauri Museum, $1.75m towards the Riverview Rest Home dementia unit at Maungaturoto and $750,000 towards the Twin Streams retirement village at Paparoa as part of post Covid-19 economic recovery policy.

Kauri Museum curator, Dr Tracey Wedge says the $3 million grant will support the museum to “re-vision the kauri story past, present and future.

The PGF funding will bring economic benefits to the region by creating jobs in short time frames for projects that are ready to go and highly visible.

“The specific museum projects that this investment is allocated to will add to the kauri story in very exciting ways — watch this space.”

Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust chair Graham Slatter says the PGF grant gives some certainty and paves the way forward to further planned rest home development.

The grant is pretty awesome and gives some certainty of the way forward through what is a fourstage project to a planned 24-7 hospital care facility in five years.“ Paparoa Community Charitable Trust “is thrilled to be a recipient of this funding,” says chair Graham Taylor. ”It is a real investment in infrastructure and housing in Paparoa with major long-term benefits. We will be able to progress with completion of the subdivision construction immediately the weather allows without being reliant on further borrowing.” ¢

A whole new ballgame u by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

The excitement surrounding the election of Judith Collins as leader of the National Party and Gerry Brownlee as deputy leader is palpable here in parliament and I believe in the wider community.

Whilst Todd Muller’s courageous decision to step down to protect his health and his family is regrettable; though understandable. It does have the silver lining of bringing to the fore two of the country’s most experienced politicians and, for the National Party, two of its most seasoned campaigners.

All of a sudden, the election campaign has been turned on its head. It is going to be a battle between two vastly different ideologies. On one side there is a party bereft of ideas other than a determination to control every aspect of our lives (for as long as they can), and on the other side, we have the National Party returning to its core values of prosperity, success, lower taxes and equal opportunities for all.

Even if that is not enough impetus for change, there is something else for us to get excited about — particularly in Kaipara and the rest of Northland.

The National Party is going to make a series of announcements regarding new infrastructure projects in the North, mostly around roading.

These announcements will be more substantive than just throwing money around to buy our votes.

They also won’t be delayed until just before the election in a cynical and obvious attempt to manipulate the election.

That is another difference between the parties, I guess.

National has the confidence in the strength of its policies and the experience of the whole team to deliver those policies, not to resort to such tactics.

That seems to be what the country is missing these days and under this government — good, sensible policies that deal with reality and recognise and reward the common sense of New Zealanders.

Come September 19 — we are going back to being treated like adults.

Norman Robbins concocted a twisted tale of poisons, stranglings, stabbings and suffocations when he penned his theatrical comedy-horror Prepare to Meet Thy Tomb in 2010. When the Dargaville Little Theatre attempted to stage the darkly comic mystery, a real deadly threat interrupted — Covid-19. Now the show is back on, and rehearsals back underway.

A volunteer cast was assembled earlier in the year to tackle the cunning plot of Robbins’ masterpiece, the capstone of a trilogy featuring a family of English assassins, their stately manor home, and a cast of witless, ruthless, heartless and sometimes clueless guests and ‘clients’, each with their own agenda. Imagine the board game Cluedo brought to life with more twists and laughs.

While the coronavirus scare stopped production for a while, director Carole Collins consulted with the cast and crew following the move back to level one. A

date was set for rehearsals to restart on July 23, this week, with the curtain set to rise officially in August.

“We’re all looking forward to getting back into the swing of things; we’d almost learned all our lines, but then the virus outbreak caused a bit of a delay.

“Ironically, for a play about poisons, murder and assassination, we all made the choice to keep our crew, cast and audience mates safe,” says ‘Sir Beverley Comstock’ (real name withheld to preserve the mystery of the play), one of the cast. “It was the right thing to do, but we’re all glad to be back!” ¢

More than $122,000 has been awarded to 41 community groups and organisations in the latest Kaipara District Council funding rounds for Community Grants, Rural Travel Fund and Creative Communities Scheme.

Community Grants have been awarded to twenty-one organisations including Hakaru Community Hall ($8,361.38), Maungaturoto Centennial Community Centre ($11,781.00), Ripia Marae ($2,103.80), Te Roroa Charitable Trust ($6,777.00) and Taipuha Hall ($10,000). Community Grants are given to support events, services or activities that benefit the community; or for specific operational or maintenance costs including upgrading and future-proofing.

“Groups and organisations like these help our Kaipara community to thrive.

They play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of the district,” said chair of the Awards and Grants Committee, Cr Peter Wethey.

Fourteen grants from the Rural Travel Fund have also been awarded.

While Covid-19 restrictions have meant that a number of sporting events have been cancelled or changed, a total of $9,825.00 was allocated including Dargaville High School, Mangawhai Beach School, Otamatea Netball Club and Pouto School.

Funding for the Creative Communities Scheme was also awarded to six applicants, to a total of $12,642.82. The current Rural Travel Fund is open until August 24, and the Creative Communities Scheme funding opens on August 1 until August 31.

It is time to get ready to vote in the 2020 General Election and referendums and ensuring your enrolment details are correct is important.

The local Special Olympic team needs people that can volunteer their time to help the athletes on their journey to competing at competitions.

“We are involved in soccer, which is coached voluntarily by Dahrmendra Kumar, athletics is with Alistair Grant, and Kaye Moffett coaches swimming,” says liaison officer Bev Hart.

“We cater to people from Kaurilands, Idea Services, Greenways Trust and other community members. We hope to join Whangarei for indoor bowls and ten pin bowling.”

Kaurilands super visor Ros Gilmour says the athletes are doing exceptionally well.

“The initiative is great for selffocussed people. Soccer teaches them to work together to get the ball

to the goal, and three athletes here joined swimming.

“They have ribbon days and regionals with people from overseas.”

The nationals will be held in Hamilton in 2021.

“To fundraise, we have a draw for one metre of firewood for $5 at Greenways Trust, 16 Edward Street, Dargaville,” says Bev. “We would love more volunteers and sponsors to help with the financial cost.

It is very rewarding helping — there is a huge sense of pride.”

“Open the pack and check your details are up to date. There have been some changes to the boundaries and names of electorates since the last election. Your electorate is listed in the pack, so check that too.”

People can vote on whether the End of Life Choice Act 2019 should come into force, giving people with a terminal illness the option of requesting assisted dying. Epic Youth at Maungaturoto Good News Church and YWAM Zion have joined forces this month to present youth in the local community with Who Dares Wins.

Kerry Underwood will be telling her journey with cancer at Maungaturoto Rotary after being encouraged to speak after hearing a friend talk about her breast cancer journey and breast cancer awareness.

“We kicked off the youth group with a new format last month and had 20 youth join us. We all had a great time on the night,” says Pastor Paul Chambers.

“We have a big team involved with YWAM members Luca and Iride from Switzerland leading the team. They are a great support to the young folk and are very well-liked. Last month we had games including table tennis, air hockey, table soccer and pool. We had a dozen one-minute games with a very short gospel message ending with hot chocolate and a BBQ. “The idea is to have a safe place for young people to come and meet together once a month. All our main leaders have passed police checks,

and we have policies in place to ensure youth safety the best we can.

“This month is Who Dares Wins and there will be competitions and dares with prizes to be won.

“There will be physical and food challenges with random food combinations ,and it will be a test of who is the bravest.

“We will have snacks, prizes and there is no cost.

“We have our Epic Youth Maungaturoto Facebook and Instagram pages for people to follow us. Youth from aged 13–18 years old are welcome to come along, at 7–9pm at the Epic Centre, 90 Hurndall Street, Maungaturoto this Friday, July 24.” ¢

“My friend’s story has inspired me to tell my story because you hope to touch someone somewhere,” says Kerry.

“I am going to start with bowel cancer awareness and to share my journey. I am 53 years old and had lived an active, busy life prior to diagnosis. I have Familiar Adenomatous Polyposis and BRCA1 genes and started chemo in April 2018 with 12 cycles completed. I was then referred to Waikato Hospital in January 2019, where I had a complete Cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy).

“I keep busy on our beef and dairy farm with my husband Peter and our three children and four grandchildren are very close and do a lot together.

We create special family moments and have a huge network of friends. That is one of the most important things going through things like this.

“I was a volunteer ambulance officer at the time of diagnosis, and I am telling my story because bowel cancer is not often talked about. My oncologist gave us hope through his positive attitude. That has helped our family look to a positive future, creating good memories for the time we have

“The more you laugh, the better it is, it pushes the negative away. My advice to people is to live, love and laugh!”

Who can make a Further Submission?
