Otamatea High School prefects with principal Rachel Clothier-Simmonds and carvers Bryce Woolen, Jay Simmonds and William Theodore with the waharoa
The waharoa entranceway is a significant piece for the school as it was carved by school groundsperson Jay Simmonds who studies carving in Auckland along with fellow carvers Bryce Woolen and William Theodore. They agreed it was important for their first big creation to adorn the school. “We ourselves are in the process of learning, and the first thing to learn is to know what it means to gift something and for that gift to be received. It highlights the giving and sharing of time,” said Ms Simmonds. “The intricate carvings represent

many facets of a Maori worldview. The concept of time, the separation from darkness into light and knowledge are represented.” The unveiling and blessing was the first opportunity for Otamatea students to perform a new school haka created at the end of 2014. Unknown to the carvers when they began the project, the haka represents the same as the carving and in addition acknowledges the Kaipara region. ”The fact that we were not aware of what the school was learning has shown us that what we carved is right, and this
is the time for OHS to be strong, and stand true,” said Mr Woolen. The waharoa will be used in the future during powhiri and on other special occasions. “We are all in this together without exception. It is teamwork and collaboration and about the community. Every single person is welcome in this place,” said principal Rachel Clothier-Simmonds. “We are very honoured to receive this gift and are proud to have it overlooking the arrival and departures of all users of the school.”
