 Led by team captain Coree Te Whata-Colley, the Western Sharks rugby team has capped a sensational season with a supreme victory. Last week’s Saturday engagement, the Tyrepower Northland Rugby Premiership Final, was the pinnacle of the game in this part of New Zealand. It saw the team from the Northern Wairoa area match their skills and stamina against a determined Mid-Northern side. As the rain came down, both teams threw together a fierce defence, but the Sharks managed to secure a hard-fought 10–7 win over their rivals. “An absolutely amazing victory and just an awesome way to end such a successful season, on and off the field for the Western Sharks and Kaihu rugby clubs,” says Sharks chairman Sam Biddles. “A huge congratulations has to go out firstly, to all the players who fronted up big time on Saturday to win our first-ever Northland Premier title. So much credit also has to be given to our coaches, our managers and Graeme Powdrell, our physio.”

 Maungaturoto Primary School students used their culinary skills to raise money for the rescue helicopter as part of a programme in the William Pike Challenge. “Over the course of the year, they are required to do 20 hours on a passion project, 20 hours of community service and five confidence and team-building activities organised by the school,” said parent Emma Holmes. “The Bake Sale idea has fallen under community service hours, and we all agreed to donate the money to NEST as it’s a local charity and has been used by one of the families in the group. The girls are going to the offices of NEST next week to deliver the money personally. A grand total of $280, which exceeded all our expectations!”

Museum leadership steps down  by Paul Campbell

Staff at the Kauri Museum and supporters of the Matakohe institution in the wider community have been shocked by the resignations of the museum general manager, Dr Tracey Wedge and long-standing museum and heritage stalwart, Mary Stevens, last week.

“Current battery technology means that for an electric ute to work at all, it would weigh four tonnes. Too heavy for practicality and on the verge of the heavy truck licence,” he said.

“The real kick in the guts came when the prime minister indicated that she had considered an exemption for legitimate users of utes, but dismissed it as too hard.”

The gathering was not without representation from both the local and central governments. Simon Watts, National MP for the North Shore electorate, came to Dargaville to show some support. There was good civic council representation, though Mayor Jason Smith was otherwise engaged, attending an important meeting on the future of local government in Blenheim.

Councillor David Wills came to pioneer Park to represent the KDC. “I am here today as a local councillor concerned about central government’s increasing efforts to force us off the land with more and more compliance costs, excessive regulation and now new taxes targeting us,” said Councillor Wills.

The mood was generally positive, though talking to the attendees of the

Howl, the same topics of contention arose many times.

Terms such as ‘ill-advised overlegislation’, ‘out of touch’ and ‘draconian measures’ were freely used by farmers, questioned about their reasons for getting involved.

“I’m sick of being dictated to by a government who have no idea. The trades and farming are the backbones of our economy, and we’re being persecuted,” said local tradesperson Bryce Robertson, encapsulating the thoughts of many.

Following the public address by Mr Rowse, a prepared statement was read on behalf of Groundswell NZ. It promised that unless concerns surrounding farming regulations, Significant Natural Area mapping, the ‘ute tax’ and ‘an avalanche of poorly thought out policy’ were addressed within a month, further protest and political action would be taken.

Then a convoy of utes, tractors and trucks took to the town’s main street, eliciting cheers and support from bystanders, one of whom shared an old saying: ‘If you bite the hand that feeds you, the next thing you get is the boot that kicks you’. 

Staff were informed of the development last week, and the departures have been confirmed by the museum trust board chair, Nick Tetzner.

“Dr Wedge has taken leave to cover her notice period,” he said after staff sources told Lifestyler that Dr Wedge had her last day at work last Friday.

Mr Tetzner would not be drawn further other than to say the board was active in seeking progress following the resignations. “We have a good board” at the museum helm, he indicated.

Other museum sources reported “simmering discontent has been apparent for some time” on the condition they were not identified.

“As someone active in the Northland and Kaipara heritage community, the news of Dr Wedge’s resignation has come as a devastating blow,” says former contract heritage researcher, Liz Clark.

“Dr Wedge facilitated an open dialogue for the community and mana whenua while taking the museum forward towards a better future. I am shocked we will no longer have her at the museum’s helm.”

The resignations came just as the museum’s newly appointed marketing executive Grant O’Neil gave details of redevelopment plans for the Ross Wing, which includes the refurbishment of both levels.

“Once new lighting and climate control are in place, the 5,000 piece kauri gum collection will be moved to the upper level to improve access and display conditions. The lower level will become our exciting new Science and Discovery Centre,” he said.

The museum last year received a government post-Covid recovery grant of $3 million that included a provision to create a centre of excellence.

Members of Dargaville’s 60s Up club had cause to celebrate last week, as their organisation turned 25.

Dargaville’s chess club is only a year old in its new premises on Hokianga Road, but already the group is garnering new players of all ages.

A large group of club members gathered for a lunchtime engagement at the Lighthouse Function Centre adjacent to Dargaville Museum to celebrate the milestone. Present were the local chapter’s president and committee members, the national secretary of the 60s Up movement and current national president Helen Michaels.

“You are never alone with 60s Up,” said Ms Michaels. “Our organisation is all about friendship and bringing people together.

“We’re also committed to the welfare of our members, so there’s always someone to reach out to if you’re in need. We’re proud of our branches working together, helping each other

and forging new friendships around New Zealand.”

The number of 60s Up clubs has grown since Dargaville first founded a chapter in 1982. The oldest is situated in West Auckland, and the youngest is a newly formed club in the town of Thames. There are 32 in all, with a central administration to help coordinate publicity, events and inter-chapter ties.

Dargaville’s 25-year milestone was an occasion to celebrate, but also one to invite new members to join.

The local chapter of 60s Up is open to anyone above the age of 55. Couples with one partner of joining age are both equally welcome; as Helen says, “it’s all about inclusiveness.” 

A recent tournament win for a young member is boosting their profile. Chess club member and co-founder Steve Guthrie says it all began with chess games in the park, but a move to Saint Joseph’s hall has seen numbers steadily grow. On a cold July night, half the players intently focussed on their miniature armies were family members of different generations pitting their wits against each other.

“We’re very pleased to see young players joining in,” says Steve. “This is really a game for all ages; a good example of that is one of our young members Tahir Teo, who recently won the interschool tournament in Horahora. He’s proven he can match it with all of us. We also have five members attending the forthcoming Whangarei open tournament in late July.”

When asked why chess is such a compelling game, the players give different responses. Some note that it’s very strategic and a workout for the brain; others love that chess has been played for thousands of years. It is still an area where new strategies and gambits are being developed. One wry comment comes from a player who’s been backed into a corner by opposing pieces; “you have to learn to lose graciously!”

Players of ‘the world’s most aggressive non-physical sport’ meet each week at 6.30pm, at Saint Joseph’s Hall in Hokianga Road. They welcome newcomers and novices as well as veterans and masters and invite anyone with a curiosity about this ancient game to come and give it a try. 

Ruawai citizens turned out in large numbers to a recent civic meeting, clarifying the Ruawai Promotions and Development Group’s position on coastal mapping, climate change response and future planning.

The entry deadline for the NorthChamber Northland Business Excellence Awards is just days away, with free entry closing on July 30.

A further 31 locals sent a submission supporting the motions put forward by the RPDG concerning the outcome of 2018 and 2021 Coastal Mapping and the restrictive effect these maps were having on the future development of Ruawai.

“It was suggested that as well as submitting the motions, the Ruawai residents could forward a submission under the district planning review process,” said RPDG chair Bruce Crompton.

Mayor Dr Jason Smith, deputy mayor Anna Curnow and Councillor Mark Vincent spoke about the existing legislative requirements which the council legally had to adhere to. “We learnt a great deal from the first time we entered the awards. After receiving the judges’ feedback, we went away and looked at our business, identified the gaps and set about working harder on making processes and protocols much stronger,” she said.

That was the beginning of the trust’s journey to success. In 2017, the Northland Rescue Helicopter was a landslide success, taking awards in four categories — Medium Sized Business,

Workplace Safety, Not-for-Profit and the overall Supreme Award.

“If we are honest, we developed a different management and governance structure two years after we first entered,” says CFO Tony Morris.

“Although we are a charity, we were a lot more business-like in our thinking by introducing a more in-depth strategic plan, business and financial forecasting, policies and procedures. That happened by appointing a general manager into the business to drive that change.

Iwi Relations Manager and Māori Advisor roles

Council is expanding its Māori advisory capacity and is currently seeking applicants for two positions. Our Iwi Relationship Manager has recently moved to another organisation, so we are looking for his replacement. We are also recruiting for the newly established Māori Advisor role who will further support the manager and our mahi. We’re working with our iwi partners, Te Roroa and Te Uri o Hau, who have helped prepare the position descriptions and will join with Council on the interview panel. The roles have two areas of focus, continuing to build on our existing relationships with iwi and Māori across our District, and upskilling staff internally on continuing to improve engagement and working with Māori as part of its day to day business.

Moves to boost artistic activity and enterprise in Kaipara have received a boost in a grant from the Creative New Zealand Local Government Arts Fund to develop an arts, culture and heritage strategy for the district.

The strategy will be developed through the Kaipara District Council during the next year, supported by Creative Northland. Council chief executive, Louise Miller, says it will help build resilience and support recovery of local arts organisations that have been affected by Covid-19.

“The council has already worked with local artists on some striking pieces.

Pieces such as the Welcome to Dargaville signs really reflect Dargaville’s roots.

However, our approach is ad hoc, and we’d like to make art and culture a more central part of the work we do,” says Ms Miller.

The council is now working with artists on the Mangawhai Wayfinding project and for the Kaiwaka village. It hopes the

new project will bring more structure and consistency to its approach.

“Creative Northland will work with Kaipara artists to understand the community context and range of capabilities and assets that already exist in our community. The strategy will help the council understand the community’s priorities and where to invest in the future.

“Some people see arts and culture as the icing on the cake and think the council should just focus on the basics. If we focus on delivering the basics and plan how we can include art and culture into our work right from the start, I think we can achieve both. Art and culture help people develop an association with a place or event. It can help communities establish a sense of identity and belonging.” 

Councillors accept committee posts

As part of the Long Term Plan recently voted into operation, the Kaipara District Council now has not one but two seats on the committee which controls Northland Inc. After the official vote on May 26 and the adoption of the LTP, the next step was the announcement of which civic councillors would take up the additional task of sitting on the Joint Regional Economic Development Committee, which governs Northland Inc, the region’s council-controlled development and promotions entity.

Deputy Mayor Anna Curnow and Councillor Peter Wethey were appointed to the role, representing the KDC alongside similar representatives from the Northland Regional Council, Far North District Council. Previously, the NRC was the 100% shareholder of Northland Inc and had sole oversight.

Kaipara Mayor, Dr Jason Smith expressed his delight with the decision.

“Kaipara hasn’t ever had this amount of influence over the strategic direction of Northland Inc. Being at the table, making decisions and setting the course ahead brings with

Ruawai Lions Club has celebrated a brace of memorable milestones as it changes officers for the coming year.

The recent meeting of the club was convened to vote in a new president and officials, but became a celebration of long service and community involvement, says spokesperson and secretary Dorothy Simpson. Of special note was a high accolade awarded to Jim Simpson, a 40year veteran of the Lions Club, as well as several other community causes.

“Jim has been a member of our club for 40 years after leaving the Ruawai Jaycee Chapter when he turned 40,” says Mrs Simpson.

“He served in many positions, including being president for six years and on our district cabinet for a further five. He sponsored 17 new members during his tenure.”

Jim received the Lions Club’s highest honour, the Melvin Jones Award, for his

service and commitment. Named for the founder of the Lions movement, the award honours those who have furthered Mr Jones’ vision of uniting the world community by community.

Jim spent considerable time and effort running the annual Ruawai Lions Auction for many years and more recently dedicated many hours to care for and improve the Te Kowhai Reserve. As well as being a pillar of the Lions Club, fellow members note that Jim is also involved in the sports of hockey, bowls, athletics and martial arts, advocacy for the rural economy via Federated Farmers and the Northern Wairoa Vegetable and Produce Growers Society, and education by supporting the local primary school board of trustees and high school board of governors. 

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Fast-paced times for Kaipara District Council will be the flavour of the period ahead. Changes being put on us by Government are rolling and clear to see: the Three Waters Reforms are now a subject of open discussion, there is an exposure draft of the first part of the proposed replacement for the Resource Management Act, there’s a new focus on indigenous biodiversity and Significant Natural Areas (SNAs). I’ll repeat what I’ve said before – it’ll pay to keep up.

The Government’s Three Waters Reforms as proposed for Kaipara District are challenging and we have many questions that haven’t yet been answered by Government. We know these things: • There is a proposed combined water entity for Kaipara District’s waters assets along with those of Auckland, Far North District and Whangarei District.

• Whangarei has provisionally opted-out of the reforms and Auckland Council is critical of the proposed governance arrangements.

• The information Government has released so far about Kaipara District is incorrect and calculations are unreliable.

They’ve confirmed they won’t be correcting that information.

• Kaipara District Council would be voiceless in the proposed entity – the weight of numbers mean that assets of 1.5million Aucklanders swamp those of the 25,000 Kaiparitians. Loss of local voice resulting from these reforms is a big concern for the Kaipara.

• We await detailed information from Government about what would happen to waters-related debt of the Council, which may all be transferred with assets to the new entity.

• We also look forward to knowing what would happen to Kaipara’s 29 Drainage Districts including the Raupo Drainage

District of Ruawai, the largest engineered stormwater network in Kaipara.

• There’s also a big question about whether we will be allowed to opt-out, as there are rumblings these reforms may be forced on us all.

In any case, we are looking forward to receiving better, robust Kaipara-specific information that can be relied upon for evidence-based decision-making.

Meanwhile, at pace we are reviewing our District Plan. We are doing it within an accelerated time frame and will be asking for community support to get it through.

We must review our District Plan every 10 years and the current plan is due for review in 2023. At the same time, as mentioned above the Resource Management Act legislation is under review, and its three proposed parts may take some years to finalise. If KDC does not have an up-to-date District Plan when we transition, we may have to retain our out-of-date provisions during these changes, which will not produce good planning outcomes for our District or communities.

There’s no time to be lost here. We’re starting with a series of discussion documents asking for high level feedback from our communities about where our focus should be for the District Plan. Please keep an eye out for these and have your say as they’ll be important for keeping the local voice loud and clear. Go well as you go.

COVID-19 Vaccine Vaccination Update

Over 57,000 Northlanders have now received at least their first COVID-19 vaccination.

NORTHLAND DHB COVID-19 Vaccination CLINICS

At the moment we’re vaccinating people: • aged 50 years and over, or kuia, kaumātua and their whānau (the people they live with and their carers), and people • aged 16-64 and have a relevant underlying health condition, or • are disabled, or • are in a position of caring for a person with a disability, or • are pregnant (any trimester).

If you are in the above groups, you can expect to receive an invitation from Northland DHB to book a vaccination appointment by 23 July.

If you do not receive an invitation by then, please get in touch with the national booking 0800 number - 0800 28 29 26.

Nationally, the vaccine rollout for Group 4 will be in age bands and will start on 28 July.

The first age band is people aged 60 years and over — they will be able to book their vaccinations from 28 July.

The next age band is people aged 55 and overbookings for this age band will open two weeks later, on 11 August.

Once it’s your turn, you can be vaccinated at any time — there’s no cut-off.

You can register your details on Book My Vaccine any time from 28 July.

This means that when it’s your turn, we will have your most up-to-date contact details and can send you an invitation to book your vaccinations.

Depending on vaccine supply and progress with other age groups, invitations will open up to people over 45 years from mid to late August and from mid to late September for people 35 plus.

Everyone else will be eligible from October.

Open day a chance to connect Otamatea High School will hold its annual Open Day on Thursday, August 12, giving potential students and their families a chance to get to know the school.

 Otamatea High School’s open day is a chance to take a closer look at education options and plan for 2022

Established in 1966, Otamatea High School is a year 7 to year 13, coeducational, state high school situated in the beautiful township of Maungaturoto. A school with high expectations that values respect, resilience and kotahitanga (unity), its goal is for all students to be ‘ready for the world’. It’s a vision that encompasses academic success, personal wellbeing, perseverance and adaptability.

Open Day is a wonderful opportunity to see the school in action. All prospective students for 2022 are most welcome to attend. However, the main focus of the day will be on providing interactive experiences for current year six and year eight students.

A couple who have been coming to Kai Iwi lakes for more than 20 years have praised the efforts of Fish and Game, which make it possible for them to angle for world-class rainbow trout amidst the setting of Taharoa Domain.

Te Kopuru’s domain lit up with fun and colour as the season of Matariki was welcomed in; next week, it’s Dargaville’s turn to enjoy the festivities.

Retired couple Christine and John Laue of Ōmāpere had a great day’s fishing for trout at Lake Taharoa, and both caught rainbow trout in good condition throughout the day, with an average weight of 2.5kg.

Christine landed a lovely hen fish of 3.12kg, the biggest she has ever caught.

“It put up a lengthy battle, and I had to be careful playing it,” said Christine. “The weather was kind, and the sun was in and out of the clouds, keeping us warm.”

The couple has been coming to Kai Iwi lakes for more than 20 years, and has always enjoyed the outing. From circus arts to fire trucks, food to share and the cultural dances of many lands, the Saturday engagement was well attended and brought out families from Te Kopuru and beyond to enjoy the fun. The fickle midwinter weather held out to provide an opportunity to play and socialise, while kapa haka, fire juggling and cultural performances entertained the crowd.

On Saturday, July 24 Dargaville will have its turn, with even more food, fun and well-tamed fire, along

with an art illuminations trail in the Riverside Gardens, lit-up houses in residential streets, live music by Olly Knox, entertainment and interaction with Circus Kumarani, the Selwyn Park Primary School kapa haka group, performances by King’s School of Dance and much more.

There will be prizes for the best dressed in a Matariki theme.

Handling feedstuffs for animal health New Zealand survey work confirms that almost all farm feedstuffs contain mycotoxins, poisonous chemicals that are produced by moulds that can have a wide range of negative effects on animals.

It is a natural phenomenon, and the mycotoxins can accumulate in feeds both before harvest and while in storage. They may or may not be at a level likely to impact animal health and performance, but farmers can take four actions to manage the risk.

Firstly, keep it dry. Moulds require moisture above 13% to accelerate growth.

All feeds that will be stored longer than 48 hours need to be more than 87% dry matter or protected by anti-mould agents.

They all need to be stored under cover, or one good rain event will quickly defeat the low moisture defence.

Secondly, keep it moving. A practical solution is to manage storage facilities so that they can be completely emptied and cleaned regularly.

Empty means empty, a casual few hundred kilograms at the back of a shed that remain unmoved can defeat the rotation line of defence.

Cleaning is the often-overlooked third line of defence. Particular areas to pay attention to include the corners of troughs in feed pads, in-shed feeding bins, and the auger boot at the bottom of silos.

These three practices go some way toward controlling mould in feed, reducing the likelihood of mycotoxins, very often already present in raw materials before

harvest. Therefore, including a registered mycotoxin binder, for example, Mycosorb® in animal feed, can help manage risks.

In summary, on-farm, there is a lot of opportunity to manage feed materials in a sanitary way. By giving attention to these

Six Special Olympics athletes from the Dargaville area have qualified for the national level of competition and will travel to Hamilton later this year to compete for a spot representing New Zealand.

Andy Daly will represent the north for the second time at the nationals, and Andrew McEwing will make his third appearance. Jason Hopper, David Fowke, Jeremy Forster and Katrina Williams make up the rest of the team.

Felicity Brackenbury serves as an assistant coach in swimming, with Bev Hart volunteering as manager for the tenpin bowling contingent. Leesa Andrewes, Alistair Grant and Pete Van de Weerd have also worked hard as assistant coaches.

Now those seeking to help the team along their way are organising a quiz night to boost funds, assisting with transport and accommodation for the athletes.

Public Notice Council has reviewed its Easter Sunday Shop Trading Policy (the Policy) and is now proposing to retain the existing Policy.

Council resolved at the Council meeting on 30 June 2021 to consult with the community on the Policy and adopted a Statement of Proposal.

Copies of the Statement of Proposal, as well as a submission form and a link to the existing Policy will be available from 12 July 2021 on Council’s website (www.kaipara.govt.nz/haveyoursay).

Hardcopy documents may be inspected at Kaipara District Council Service Centres at Dargaville and Mangawhai and at the Dargaville Public Library, and Community Libraries situated in Maungaturoto, Mangawhai, Paparoa and Kaiwaka.

The Statement of Proposal includes detailed information on how interested parties can present their views to Council; in person and via a written submission, or both.

Telephone submissions can be made by calling 09 439 9299.

Feedback may be provided between 9am Monday 12 July and 5pm Thursday 12 August 2021. All written submissions will be acknowledged.
