Of these 48 missions, 24 were accidents, 19 were medical call outs, four were hospital transfers and one

 Two mixed teams from Dargaville’s Hikuwai O Kaipara Waka Ama club competed in the annual Hoi Matariki in Parua Bay. Both teams came in three seconds apart, placing 10th and 11th. “There were 20 wakas in our eight kilometre novice race,” said team member, Serena Carran. “There was just five minutes difference between us and the winning team. We have been training three times a week on the Northern Wairoa and visited Parihaka club in Whangarei and Te Tii leading up to the regatta to get practise and experience. Last year we placed 26th. Our next event is the Pearl of the North at Te Tii in October.”

 Members of the Dargaville Town Brass Band met these school holidays to practise at the Wesley Methodist Church. The church has a 17 piece brass band and Reverend Kuli Fisi’iahi was happy to help revive the tradition for the first time since 1975. The band are working towards being a town band available for events. Music tutor Dale Nelson encourages both children and adults to get involved with the band. “Music is like a team sport. If you play you can be involved in all sorts of groups where ever you are,” she said.

Fonterra and DoC are working together under The Living Water partnership with dairy farmers, iwi, conservation groups, schools and other agencies to improve water quality and and variety of native wildlife in the catchments.

Chief pilot and CEO, Peter Turnbull, says pilots and St John paramedics have had to become even more efficient and focussed during these missions as a result of this increase.

There has also been a rise in night missions compared to previous

years with 156 so far this year all over Northland.

“Night rescues paired with the unpredictable weather at this time of year has meant we are using the full capability of the aircraft during a lot of our missions.

“Our night vision goggles and GPS routes have been extremely useful and allowed us to get on with our rescues despite the conditions and time of day,” says Mr Turnbull.

Missions included a mix of accident and emergency callouts and flying patients from small rural communities in Northland to Whangarei and Auckland Hospitals. 

Three new interns have started at Big River FM in Dargaville for a six month internship programme.

When the Civilian Maimed Association building in Dargaville was handed to the Greenways Trust for safekeeping late last year, the trustees had to decide what to do with the remaining funds from the trust.

“Our aim is to have people come and support local community organisations as they get hands-on experience in the radio industry,” said sales manager Peter Martin.

Forum builds momentum Artistic interpretations

The Dargaville Business Forum is calling for driven people who care about the community to come forward and join the forum in light of their upcoming annual general meeting.

Chairperson Peter Boyd says the last year has been one of rapid growth and exposure and the committee will be working on refining and maintaining the services over the next year.

“Over the last year we have more than doubled our membership. A number of members are stepping down from their roles for various personal reasons and we would like to continue to have a good mix of business owners, employees and people with other applicable skills.

“We have built up a good  Brian’s Gym owner, Brian Froggatt, says his involvement with the business forum has been beneficial for relationship with the Chamber of his business Commerce. We are able to act like a facilitator for them and are looking be spread around and there is a lot of to build the relationships between support especially for people starting Northland Inc and other significant up new businesses.”

The event was held by artists from the Dargaville Arts Association with the help of Creative Communities.

Entrants were encouraged to paint their interpretation of what Matariki meant to them.

School holiday creativity

Dairy robbers sentenced Dargaville men, 28-year-old John Michael Paniora and 22-year-old Israel Tribble, were arrested on August 21 last year and charged with robbing the Hilltop Dairy on Awakino Road, Dargaville at gunpoint on August 11.

Mr Paniora appeared in the Whangarei District Court on July 6.

Judge Keith de Ridder sentenced him

to 21 months in jail but gave him leave to apply for home detention saying he was not the main player in the robbery as he did not carry the gun.

Mr Tribble was sentenced on November 12, 2015 before Judge Greg Davis to a four-year and two months’ jail term for his role in the robbery.

Grandparents raising grandchildren  by Ann Morgan

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust New Zealand is a registered not for profit organisation that provides nationwide support services to full time grandparent carers in New Zealand.

Dianah Roberts is now the KaiwakaWellsford Grandparents Raising Grandchildren coordinator after having spent three years as the coordinator in Kaitaia.

“We help grandparents who find themselves raising their children’s children and don’t know what to do. The best possible outcome is for children to stay in their families. Many people have had to lay aside their own lives to care for their grandchildren for one reason or another,” said Dianah.

“At times they give up their jobs. It is quite a lifestyle change and we are here to help support and guide them through the legal processes and anything else they may need to know.”

Dianah says it is important the grandparents understand their entitlements, and have the knowledge of what is going to happen when family conferences and court is involved.

“Carers often think ‘what do I do, how and why’. Everyone needs direction at certain times in life and this is often one of those times. There are no books out there to say this is what you do in this given circumstance in life.”

Dianah says understanding what is happening to children as they are growing is an important part of caring for them and the carers need support too.

For two years Greenways Trust resident and worker Katy McAteer, had been saving for her dream experience to go on a helicopter ride, only to wake one morning to be told her savings, along with the other workers’ pocket money had been stolen during a burglary.

Greenways Tr ust general manager Dianne Fowlie says Katy had almost saved enough to take herself and a support person up in a helicopter.

The organisation provides housing for those with intellectual disabilities and arranges  Greenways Trust workers from left: Tiffany Stimpson, Peter d ay programmes, Whittaker, Gary Calder, Jeremy Forster, Helen Wedding, and community participation Katy McAteer with her empty savings jar and employment.

Cash savings were taken from a ‘give a little’ page to help recover their filing cabinet along with a small money lost funds.

Where It’s Easy to Live Road Works for July 2016

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District. Please refer to program below for location of spraying which is subject to weather conditions.

Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction.

Routine works during July include pothole repairs on unsealed and sealed roadways, as they are identified, and clearing culvert inlets and outlets.

Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflective edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs.

Area specific works planned during July include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the district • Maintenance grading throughout the district when conditions are suitable • Unsealed pothole repairs throughout the district • Roadside vegetation spraying – north of Dargaville • Water table restoration – Hood, Waikara and Oneriri Roads • Unsealed road strengthening – Ups and Downs Road, Tramline and Ounuwhao Roads • Drainage Improvements – Ford and Pukemiro Roads There might be delays during July because of adverse weather, but work will still go ahead. Twenty-six-year-old landscape designer Peter Boyd is hoping to bring a younger perspective to the Kaipara District Council.

Rob Stevenson is Kaipara born and bred and farms a 300 hectare property in the Tangowahine Valley and is putting his name forward as a candidate for the Northland Regional Council Kaipara Ward.

He is standing for the Dargaville ward in the upcoming local body elections after a number of approaches from community members.

Mr Boyd grew up on a local sheep and beef farm and returned to the area in 2014 after completing a Bachelor of Architectural Studies in Landscape Architecture from Victoria University in Wellington.

“The Kaipara has incredible potential and I will continue to be active in assisting the communities to take advantage of that,” said Mr Boyd.

“Since returning home I have been involved with organisations including the Dargaville Business Forum, the Dargaville Arts Association and the Dargaville Community Development Board.”

He has also been involved in the organisation of local events and as a landscape designer he has been preparing the Dargaville Placemaking Vision Guide for the Kaipara District Council. This will guide future improvements throughout the town.

“I hear a lot of people ask how do we attract more people my age to the area.

One key component of this is having a proactive council that is seen to be forward thinking and providing quality infrastructure,” says Mr Boyd.

“Now more than ever it is important for our community to support the changes they want to see and shape our future.

“I am standing because I care about this district and I want to leave it in a better state than it is in now. He would like to encourage everyone to get out and vote this election to change the face of the future.

Council on the move The Northland Regional Council’s Dargaville office is on the move from its long-held Victoria St base, to shared space in the existing Kaipara District Council building.

Four Kaurilands service users have now moved into their brand new home which has been in the making for one and a half years.

Kaurilands general manager Karen Duncan says the four bedroom home which has been named River View, will mean the service users have more independence.

“They will be running their own house. They will have support but not as much as in the other houses and they are in control of their lives. It will give them the skills to move into the community if they ever want to,” said Karen.

The regional council’s office is currently home to four full-time Kaipara staff. This includes area manager Gary Treadgold, a customer relations officer, a biosecurity advisor and a land management officer.

All four staff will keep their jobs and Mr Treadgold says the shift to the KDC’s nearby offices at 42 Hokianga Rd is a commonsense one.

Gull opening in Wellsford

Joe and Stacey Dodd have owned the Wellsford Foursquare, known as the ‘Top Shop’, for four months and say they are loving the experience.

Gull New Zealand has started construction of a self-serve pump station in Wellsford and the company plan to have the station opened by the end of October.

“I have worked in New World and Pak n Save in management positions for many years and moved around a bit with the job. It was always my plan to own my own business and we were given the opportunity to have this store, so we grabbed it,” says Joe. “I love being hands on and serving the public. It’s all about giving a good deal and good products. I like the challenge as well.”

The couple hire 17 local staff and have big plans for the store including continuing to extend their range of new products.

“We have a new produce case arriving soon for our fruit and vegetables and we have added lots of new items which our customers have been asking for. Quality is important and we are focussing on increasing the range of our fresh fruit, meat and vegetables.

“We have sponsored many local

events already including the Wellsford School breakfast club, plunket and kindergarten. It is important to help our local community and give back where we can, especially with nutritious products to feed the children such as apples, bananas and bread.

“Our carpark is under construction with the new self service Gull Station being built. When the project is complete we will have 12 new sealed carparks.

We will be getting a set of new shopping trolleys as well.

The project should be complete in eight weeks.

“We still have car parks available throughout the upgrade. I appreciate our customers’ patience until the construction is finished.

“We have enjoyed transitioning into the town, it is a really positive here and the community have definitely welcomed us.” 

“We are really excited about getting into Wellsford and serving the community. It was a gap on the map and a there are a lot of people living in and passing through the town. It is a growing centre of New Zealand,” said Gull NZ general manager David Bodger.

Mr Bodger says when a Gull Station opens there is a definite change in fuel costs across the area.

I have worked in this industry for more than 25 years and every survey worldwide says consumers want their fuel when they want it and fast. We have looked at properties in and around Dargaville as well but haven’t found a suitable premises yet. When we turn up we look to make a difference for the fuel price in the market — it all is relevant to opening a service station.” 

Put the Mahindra up against anything in its price bracket and it’s just as planted, just as sure footed. But there’s the rub, of course. There’s next to nothing in the XUV 500’s price bracket at all — and nothing within a country mile of offering the same features for less.

Reading the signs to stay safe  by Andy Bryenton

With winter weather well and truly upon us, it’s a good time to take a hard look at safety on the road — a task which begins in the garage or on the driveway.

Knowing the signs which point to deterioration or wear and tear on vital automotive components is a vital skill set and one which can prevent not just accident and injury, but also major repair costs.

The major point of contact with the road is right under your car’s tyres. The four contact patches of rubber which transmit hundreds of horsepower to the tarmac suffer huge stresses, and the grooves moulded into the tread are the means by which water is ejected from this important area. With warrant of fitness checks for post-2001 vehicles now on a yearly basis, taking care to check your tread might be a literal life saver. Tread should be of an even depth across the whole tyre — including the rounded ‘shoulder’ which runs into the sidewall. A handy tyre tester is available for free from Carters Tyres in Dargaville, or you can use a matchstick — the tread must be no shallower than the width of the match head.

Along with tyres, suspension and brakes take a hammering in the winter.

If you’re experiencing uneven braking, or a shuddering sensation when you engage the brakes, this could mean your brake pads are worn thin. Some brake pads contain a metal tab which makes a repetitive scraping noise when exposed through wear — this distinctive sound is designed to alert drivers to the need to replace worn parts. Similarly, a creaking or squeaking noise coupled with loose steering response could indicate worn wheel bearings or ball joints in your

suspension. To double check, jack up the affected wheel and try to ‘wobble’ the tyre. Any play in the joints means it’s time to visit a mechanic.

Another common issue in front wheel drive vehicles is a loud clicking noise when turning hard, and especially when reversing. This indicates wear of the CV joints which provide power to the front wheels. It’s good to check this area in any case come winter, as vital areas under the car between the motor and wheels are covered by rubber protective ‘boots’. A tear or slippage of these boots can let water and grit into sensitive parts. If you’ve heard or felt anything odd while driving, and you’re worried that

the problem may get worse, visiting your local garage is the easiest way to gain some peace of mind. Remember that an issue caught early is cheaper and easier to fix — and it could save you from a crash this winter. 

The event has been going for more than 36 years and in a hard fought game the Northern Barbarians took the trophy home with a victory. “The visitors were treated to a visit on the Bickers’ family farm, a bush walk, a game of capture the flag, and plenty of mud. Special thanks goes to Kaipara Kumara and Silver Fern Farms for their generous donations.
