A greenstone adze which was lost on the very day Captain James Cook’s Endeavour sailed New Zealand’s east coast in 1769, has found it’s way back to its owners after being ‘lost’ for 248 years.

I was present at an emotional ceremony this June when the greenstone known as Kanohi Pounamu was handed back by members of my extended Wynyard family from Dargaville, Wellsford and Auckland, to the people of Ngati Maru at Kopu in Waikato.

My paternal great-great-grandfather, Monty Wynyard, came into possession of the Kanohi Pounamu sometime before 1953. From Monty the adze and its history have been passed down, with many failed attempts to find the owners along the way.

A 1953 document by Monty tells the story.

‘In 1769 relatives of Ngati Maru were carving a waka. To add mana to their proceedings and as an augury of success of the canoe, they had obtained from their Thames relations a greenstone adze, a rather small but treasured heirloom of the tribe, with presumed mythical attributes as attested by its name Kanohi Pounamu — Greenstone Eye,’ he wrote.

Suddenly, the boat builders saw the Endeavour sail by and they headed for the pa to tell others.

The craftsman who had the adze fell and dropped it while going up a hill.

More than a century later a kauri gum digger found the adze, minus its handle and broken on one end, buried about 30 centimetres deep.

He gave it to Monty, then a lawyer who acted on behalf of gold mining companies in Thames.

For me as a family member and descendant of Monty, I felt proud and honored to be part of this occasion and part of this family.

I think my relative Barbara Gaston sums it up well by saying “the significance for Aotearoa is the issue of returning toanga to the rightful heirs...

Giving back toanga is an important part of acknowledging the results of colonisation and starting the reversal process by showing respect for the people and culture of pre-Captain Cook times and the Maori culture which is still very much alive today.”

So after negotiations between Barbara and Wati, I, along with other Monty Wynyard descendants, were welcomed onto the Matai Whetu marae in Kopu.

Wati Ngamane, chairperson of Ngati Maru said “it was magic, really nice to get it back as it was a treasured possession of our ancestors...It was a coming home, of something that has been lost,” Two different families and cultures with awe and admiration in common for the sacred stone, both with respect for its mana and seeing it finally come home. It certainly felt like a long time coming. ¢

Mr Steele said house values are also still rising in parts of Auckland including Rodney — North, Whangarei and the Far North District for similar reasons.

“If things continue to slow through the rest of Auckland and confidence in the wider market begins to fall, the easing in the rate of value growth experienced in Auckland could also follow further north,” he said.

Data from the Kaipara District Council shows from July 1, 20162017 there were 331 building consents issued in Kaipara, with 221 of these in Mangawhai.

“The District Plan has growth areas identified around Dargaville, Kaiwaka, Mangawhai and Maungaturoto. We are currently assessing land for future development as part of the Mangawhai Community Plan project.

We will then be reviewing the other growth areas, with Dargaville next,” said council general manager community, Venessa Anich. ¢

Aranga School has observed many Matariki celebrations in its 112-year history and this year pupils spent the last two weeks of the school term experiencing hands-on learning about Matariki and celebrating their theme of family.

A fundraiser for the top senior netball team at Otamatea High School will be the first if it’s kind on Heathdale Farms on July 23.

Aranga School parent helper, Kathleen Blazek said that each day someone new from the community or a family member would come into the school to host an activity including flax weaving, Maori kite making, poi, learning waiata, bone carving and making paper mache planets.

“A whanau member wrote a play specifically for the Aranga Matariki celebrations so children learnt that in just two days. Everything they made during the ‘hands-on learning was incorporated into the play or displayed for whanau to see.”

The students performed the play on the last night of the celebrations as a way of giving back to their community.

Thanks to generous food donations a hangi fed everyone during the closing of the celebratory two weeks.

The school would like acknowledge their thanks to Te Roroa Development Group, Kaihu Tavern, Kaihu Mill, Kaihu g.a.s, Farmlands, Carters Tyres, Morfett Motors, Countdown, Waipoua Lodge, Mamaranui play centre, Waikara Marae and Pananawe Marae whose support towards the hangi was “tremendous” said Kathleen.

a pet day which is scheduled as the next term 3 activity. ¢

Co-organiser Kim Allen is no stranger to hosting fundraising events on her property including the Marohemo horse trek and the annual Maungaturoto Primary School trail ride and now she can add mud run to the list.

The run will include two route options of a 3.5km or 4.5-5km course going through the scenic surrounds of Heathdale farms sheep and beef property where meandering streams and muddy drains will add a natural obstacle element.

“We are hoping the mud run will be another good fundraiser for Otamatea High School Senior Netball team 1,” says Kim. All funds raised are going towards supporting the team as they spend a week in Auckland from September 4

for the Upper North Island Secondary Schools Tournament.

“The run is about having fun and is a great opportunity for some team building and helping your team members get through the fabulous mud! Or you go it alone for the satisfaction of not needing help through the mud and obstacles,” says Kim. After the event there will be awards for best dressed and spot prizes for finishing the run. Pre-registration is preferred before by July 21 however entries will be accepted on the day.

The run will take place at 100 Hill Road Marohemo, Maungaturoto and registration starts at 10am with the run kicking off at 11am.

The Tinopai Volunteer Emergency Services now have a building consent for their emergency services centre to get underway but need help raising the extra funds to get started.

Once the building is complete it will house the Tinopai rural fire truck, accident /medical response vehicle, and North Kaipara Coastguard vessel.

“It simply means that there will be a central place where all rescue equipment will be based and it means that all the equipment that’s required from the unit to save people’s lives will be protected from the elements,” said spokesperson Walter Smith.

The building will be project managed by a local committee and in keeping with the coastal aspect will be blue and sandstone coloured. “So far the two units involved have put in around

$10,000 each. In addition we have been fundraising through market stalls at Tinopai and last year’s book fair. We also have applied for grants, so building will start as soon we have enough funds,” he said.

With the total cost estimated at $200,000, a Give a Little Page has been set up to help reach the target amount.

Another book fair will take place on Saturday, September 9 at the Paparoa hall starting at 10am. ¢

“For many years women and lately also men have kept Thursday mornings free and have enjoyed two hours of camaraderie and fun playing badminton,” said player Lynley Clements.

“Sad as it would be, we can see that if numbers don’t increase in the future, closure would have to be contemplated.”

She says that the games are open to all ages. “The emphasis is on fitness and enjoying the feeling of having a good workout, but there is also an element of competitiveness and honing of skills. In saying this,

skill level is not important when joining as there is a great team spirit among members who are always ready to help.”

Young parents can bring their children as there is a large area for them to play. The club also has spare rackets available.

“So if there are any readers who would like to give it a go, just drop in on Thursday mornings, side entrance of town hall or contact us.”

The Paparoa Community Charitable Trust is organising a midwinter gala community dinner on Saturday, July 22, to publicise its Paparoa Lifestyle Village project and “provide a burst of midwinter cheer for the community.”

Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale of a little boy raised in the jungle by wolves will come to life in the Jungle Book on stage at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre in Maungaturoto next month.

Updates and information about the village of 14 retirement units and 15 individual residential sections, now awaiting resource consent, will be presented at the event. This is the first of many events, as the trust is keen to spread awareness of the project.

The Rt Hon Sir Lockwood Smith and his wife Lady Alexandra will also be there and will talk about their diplomatic experiences after dinner.

The evening will conclude with an auction, including a weekend at a local luxury ‘Book a Bach’ property

and a ‘Lions Labour’ offer. Trust chair Graham Taylor said that tickets are selling well and a professional caterer is organised for the three course meal, with choices.

“Brighten up your winter by forming a group and picking up your tickets from Skelton’s Drapery. Tickets will be limited and are $45 adult and $40 for Gold Card.”

The event is at the Paparoa Memorial Hall, on Paparoa Valley road. Dress is smart casual. A cash bar will be provided. ¢

The story of the Indian jungle, animals, humans, friendship, love and the natural laws that bind us all together are brought to the stage in BB Cooper’s musical, written by Toby Hulse, in a spell-binding, edge-of-yourseat adventure of song, dance, music and laughter that evokes the brilliance of Rudyard Kipling’s original stories.

Director and musical director, Peter and Maura Flower, say they are excited to be using an adaptation of the play that is making its world premiere in Nottingham, in the United Kingdom, in July. “We will be the second theatre in the world to stage this new show,” Maura says.

A colouring competition is being run to create interest in The Jungle Book. There will be three age groups — Under 12, 12-18 and adult. There will be prizes for each section, and all

entries will be on display in the theatre foyer during the show season. The colouring-in page may be downloaded from www.ort.org.nz or you can pick one up from Tony’s Lotto Shop. If that is too difficult, contact Katrina on 021 701 079.

Make sure you put your name, age and contact phone number on the reverse of your picture, and drop into Tony’s. The competition closes on July 31.

The Jungle Book season runs from August 4 to August 20. Adults $28, school students $12. Dargaville High School Students recently went to the ‘Create1World’ creative activism conference in Auckland and entered its competition, winning the social studies category for their project about homelessness.

The students slept outside in cardboard boxes to experience what it was like to be homeless and made a documentary about their experience.

“You don’t realise how tough it can be until you actually experience it… we all thought the next morning ‘how do other people do this for such a prolonged amount of time?,” said one of the students Michaela Jenkins-Stevenson.

The group chose the homeless for their project because of an increase over the years.

“That’s part of the reason why we are so passionate about it, because it’s not really improving,” said Michaela.

Jasmine Rae added that “homeless isn’t always about just being on the

streets, it can be living in your auntie’s garage or in a car. There’s a lot more around than people can see.”

Student Dylan Kani said the whole experience “was real eye opener into how much of an issue this really is in New Zealand and how much it needs to be looked into… if you are in that situation, definitely seek help, like going to the James Liston Hostel,” a homeless shelter where the students volunteered the night before the conference.

“Empathy and understanding are key I think,” said Michaela. “For people to just get the word out that it’s happening and not really improving I think is really important. Because with that will come change.” ¢

“Chief Scout is a difficult award to achieve, taking about four years to earn.

Skills must be accomplished to a high standard in leadership, camping and tramping, personal development, new experiences and community service,” said leader Jenny Webb.

The trio had to work through bronze, silver and gold awards before they could apply for the Chief Scout Award.

At the ceremony the trio said in a shared speech: “We would not be able to achieve this without the hours of volunteer time given by our leaders, the support of the adults in our group, our parents, other scouts and community

members who have helped us along the way.” They credit Jenny Webb with inspiring them. “Being sight impaired hasn’t stopped her teaching us so much in scouting and just because you have a disability, doesn’t mean you can’t get on and achieve whatever you set your mind to.”

“I am so proud of them, they have a great future ahead of them,” said Jenny.

The teenagers next step is to start their own Venturer Scouting group and work towards their Queen’s Scout Award. Presented at Government House, this marks the pinnacle of effort and achievement in the scout movement. ¢

In the parlance of street racing and auto tuning, a ‘sleeper’ is a vehicle which looks sedate and run of the mill — but under the hood is anything but normal. The question is, does the new Subaru WRX STi qualify simply because it’s now available without its signature sky-high rear spoiler?

The WRX has gone through a host of transformations during its lifetime as Subaru’s prestige sports model, and it’s good to see that this latest incarnation is back to the menacing super-fourdoor sedan shape of its rally winning ancestors. Undeniably bigger and bolder, the WRX STi — that last bit stands for Subaru Technica International, the inhouse tuners who are to the seven stars brand what AMG are to Mercedes — now sits right on the power figures and size that used to be its big brother — the turn-of-the-millennium B4 Legacy Blitzen. But don’t let the added inches fool you. This is still a finely honed Japanese blade of a machine, made to carve up twisty back roads like nearly nothing else on earth.

In fact, it’s pretty safe to say that the only other four cylinder boxer engine that’s going anywhere near as fast sits in either Subaru’s own BRZ sports coupe — or in the back of a new Porsche Cayman. With 2.5 litres of displacement bolstered by some of the cleverest turbocharging in the business,

the new WRX STi has enough punch to put a grin on petrolheads’ faces, and, surprisingly for a machine pushing close to 300 horsepower, a lot of practicality.

That means five seats, a boot, leather upholstery, climate control, a proper sound system — these are the kind of things that are usually stripped out of a sports car just to save a few kilos. The WRX, however, leaves them in to create something better — a sensible machine which goes full Jeckyll-and-Hyde with the twist of a selector knob and a tap of the throttle. There’s a certain subtlety to the edition minus that vast spoiler too, making this a smarter choice for those who don’t feel the need to show off.

Of course, for those who do, what better pedigree to flaunt than that of a world rally crushing legend? You can even throw in an extra 140 dollars for official STi tyre valve caps if you so desire. But we can’t help but love the look of the toned-down, tuned up version — like a werewolf in a tuxedo — it’s got plenty of bite to back up its subtle growl. ¢

WHY THE HONDA RANCHER WORKS ON FARM

Polaris have been riding high on the success of their range of Ranger side-by-side off-road farm machines for some time now, but that doesn’t mean the big North American manufacturer is resting on its laurels. With a new season about to kick off on Kiwi farms they’ve come out of our National Field Days with an upgraded range, pushing the limits of what can be achieved in the UTV class.

The original Isuzu D-Max ute appealed to those in the light commercial sector who were looking for something truly tough — a machine which could take lashings of punishment and still keep slugging. Built with real truck components by a company which drives a vast quantity of the freight movements in Asia, there was no compromise under the hood on rugged dependability.

It was a great formula, but now the development team at Isuzu have had to go one better with a new generation boasting the same pedigree of toughness and a bold new look. The new D-Max is all about attention to detail, and while it is still undeniably, unashamedly a truck rather than a big sedan, its road manners have been tweaked and refined to provide the best of both worlds.

Under the hood there’s a powerful, robust three litre turbo diesel engine, delivering a handy 430Nm of torque from deep down in the rev range.

By the time the needle hits 2200 the D-Max is already developing stump-pulling power, which makes it a consummate tow vehicle. The parts inside that mill are also what we’ve come to expect from Isuzu — a thick, stainless steel timing chain, massive roller bearings on the rocker arms up top of each piston, and a special liner to each cylinder sleeve to make sure it lasts the distance, even under heavy workloads.

This means that on a test drive the new D-Max feels serious — like a proper truck. Once again Isuzu have approached

the light commercial equation from a new direction — they’re not trying to make a road car which happens to have a big rear deck. They’re adding comfort and convenience to a working machine.

So, to be contrary, instead of testing the load-bearing capacity of the ute or its sheer power, we took it out on the twisting, off-cambre, often hilly road out to Whangarei Heads.

And found that the new automatic gear shift is so smooth it’s almost undetectable, like the best of waiters — that the ride is comfortable, the driving position is too, and all the controls fall neatly to hand.

Better yet, pulling up next to a group of sunny, winter Saturday motorcyclists and road trippers at the Parua Bay Tavern, the D-Max didn’t look out of

place. The new look makes this ute stand out, especially in black — a good number of heads were turned to take a second look.

Combine a host of new features with that legendary Isuzu toughness and you’re looking at a real contender — all right — one that’s built on the solid foundations of its predecessor but looks to the future. ¢

Robyn Dormer relocated her second hand book store from Devonport Wharf to Ruawai earlier this year, opening Books@ Ruawai on Freyberg Street and hasn’t looked back.

After receiving an eviction notice at her Devonport location last October Robyn says in less than 24 hours she decided to make the move to Ruawai.

She bought a house there 1 ½ years ago and a good friend, Sue, who had previously worked alongside Robyn, was already living in the area.

“Sue holds the fort and processes all the sales. I come and go as I’ve still got commitments down in Auckland I have to get back for,” says Robyn.

She adds the Ruawai store gets a lot of foot traffic. “It’s been a really positive response, we’ve also had people from Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Whangarei and people seem very happy that we’ve moved here.

“We’re having a bigger impact here in terms of the community and I think that’s a real privilege.”

Her expansive book collection takes up the shop space next door as well.

Robyn’s was a maths and chemistry teacher as well as a researcher for the Auckland University Medical School for most of her adult life.

Then in 2001 she decided to open a bookshop and after taking an accounting for small businesses course she was all set to go. “We try to keep the prices down.

That was the reason I setup my second hand book shop because I wanted to make books more accessible and so that’s been our guiding principal.”

With the majority of her sales through the site AbeBooks, Books@Ruawai currently has 55,000 books on its database. So when the eviction notice was given “I thought I don’t want to

lose all of that, I was protecting my database really — it’s an amazing database of all sorts of books and genres.”

With that many books in tow setting up a new store and transferring all the books up north was no easy feat but Robyn says she had the “most amazing help.”

“There’s a magic in books and I hope it never stops.”

Books @ Ruawai is on the lookout for a casual worker who can help out with the database logging going forward.

They can be found on 5 Freyberg Road and is open Monday–Wednesday 9.30–11.30am and Thursday, Friday 2–4pm plus one weekend every month. ¢

The inaugural New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Professionals has selected the business as a finalist in the ‘best new clinic’ category.

Owner and therapist Nina Quan believes her single-minded vision and results achieved through her recent ‘skin challenge’ with local ladies has helped secure a place among the top four entries.

“My vision is to create a small reputable clinic that delivers efficacious treatments using proven technology and products to help women achieve healthy, beautiful skin,” she said.

Involvement in the beauty business stemmed from Nina’s passion for skin science while studying biochemistry and genetics for her science degree. Nina’s

clinic in the main street of Paparoa has attracted attention since the building was refurbished and refitted late last year.

She offers advanced skincare treatments including electroporation, LED light therapy and collagen induction therapy as well as other treatments.

Nina says her business is well supported by locals and residents from the wider Kaipara district and she has also noted clients increasingly include Aucklanders who regularly holiday in the area.

As part of the award process Nina will give a presentation on her clinic and will be interviewed by a panel of judges in Auckland next month. The winner will be announced at a red-carpet function at Te Papa in Wellington on September 30. ¢

Locals in Pahi and Paparoa are coming together to extend conservation efforts already made to make the Pahi peninsula pest free by 2020.

“It all started with what locals such as Paul Smith, Jim Rowlands and the Lions club are doing and have done,“ said Pahi Pest Free volunteer Shaun Holland.

In 1989 the Paparoa Lions got involved with a piece of land at the base of the Pahi peninsula and made it into a bush walk.

They took on pest control in the area, with ongoing help from the Department of Conservation and the Northland Regional Council.

With other parts of New Zealand successfully becoming pest free, Shaun said “I thought with Kaipara, although we don’t have any islands, we have peninsulas, so it would be really good to work on places like Pahi and Whakapirau… We’ll just go as far as we can.” Currently the group is providing

free rat stations and bait for Pahi residents and trapping possums and mustelids. As well as making use of the free rat stations and bait, people can help by trapping possums themselves and recording any native birds and gecko’s they see around Pahi.

There are donation boxes in Paparoa shops and volunteers are also needed.

“It would also be really great to get together with other community pest control groups or individuals in other areas to share ideas and information,” said Shaun.

“For it to work it needs to be community driven. Kaipara is a beautiful place with lots of naturally beautiful wild places, but they need help because they are getting hit pretty hard.“ Email Shaun on shaunholl@hotmail.com. ¢
