“I’m pleased this funding is enabling work to continue that will lessen the economic impact of Covid-19,” Mr Jones said.

The projects are being funded as part of the infrastructure investments announced on July 1, by Finance Minister Grant Robertson to kick-start the postCovid-19 rebuild by creating more than 20,000 jobs and unlocking more than $5 billion of projects up and down New Zealand.

The Kauri Museum is receiving a $3 million makeover that includes creating a centre of excellence to create a deeper, stronger understanding of the significance of the kauri to the community and the rest of New Zealand.

“The museum’s board is building on the strengths of locals by educating local rangatahi to tell the stories of the significance of the kauri,” Mr Jones said.

“As the first stop on the Ancient Kauri Trail, the museum is building on its iconic international heritage status while supporting professional career development. These projects are all well supported and generate a sense of belonging to their communities,” The Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust is to receive $1.75

million towards the completion of the Riverview Rest Home dementia unit.

The unit will provide 14 dementia beds for the wider Kaipara and has been under planning for several years, with bank loans and extensive community fundraising leading to its establishment, although actual building has been further delayed by the Covid-19 lockdown. “The new unit addresses the need for more aged care options in the region,” said Mr Jones.

The third to benefit under the funding package will be the Paparoa Community Charitable Trust, which will receive $750,000 as a contribution for the completion of a new 10-unit retirement village, which is being developed under the title of Twin Streams in Franklin Road. Groundworks for the project are already underway.

The $50 billion Covid Response and Recovery Fund (CRRF) set out in Budget 2020 earmarked $3 billion for infrastructure projects. Ministers established the Infrastructure Reference Group (IRG) to work with local councils and businesses to identify a pipeline of projects to support the economy during the Covid-19 rebuild. Cabinet then decided the key sectors and regional breakdown of funds with more than 150 projects worth $2.6 billion being approved in principle. ¢

p Children of all ages attending the Cornerstone Children’s Services school holiday programme participated in several different activities last week. The days included science experiments, baking, art, slime and hand sanitiser making as well as investigating the work of a haulage truck driver and joining together to ride bikes and scooters outdoors. “We kick-started with the truck ride, and they really enjoyed the experience,” says administrator Lorin Hona. “The boys liked being up high up near the driver and being able to pull the horn. They enjoyed seeing the back of the truck lift up too and tried to modify the toy logging trucks which we purchased from Des’s shop Time To in Dargaville to do the same. They actually built the toy trucks themselves and can take them apart, which supports their imaginative play. We support local businesses and give the children opportunities to learn about their community.”

p Thelma from The Kauri Museum at Matakohe has been busy developing the native bush area behind the museum. “We are pleased to be open and sharing our New Zealand stories with Kiwis,” says museum general manager Tracey Wedge. “Stephanie and Ollie from the Department of Conservation delivered our kauri dieback signage for the wash station installed by the department at the bush entrance a few weeks ago. We appreciate the support of Te Tai Kauri/Kauri Coast Office Department of Conservation based in Dargaville. The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai has supplied the museum with foot-washing stations to keep our forests safe. The native bush at the back of The Kauri Museum presents our visitors with the opportunity to see and identify trees from Taitokerau Northland and learn more about protecting our kauri trees.“

u The children at Te Kopuru Playcentre have been busy getting their garden ready. “We applied for a Kai Ora grant to help fund vegetable plants and fruit trees for the centre,” says past president Delicia Gillatt. “Once I start working in the garden, the children get stuck in pulling weeds and things. They really love being involved and once the weather clears we are looking forward to planting the fruit trees and expanding the garden. We get fruit through Te Kopuru School as part of the KidsCan initiative, and we will top up with carrots and lettuce and things. The effective use of the government’s $100 million spend to clean up the Kaipara Harbour is people skills and planning, as well as farming involvement, according to veteran environmentalist and leader of Otamatea Harbour Care, Mark Vincent.

“In various ways, we have been responsible for at least 100,000 trees and flaxes being planted in our part of the harbour catchment over the last seven years and we are currently producing about 20,000 a year.”

Mr Vincent says meaningful Farm Environment Plans “are the key to putting this money to best use, and doing the most to restore the health of the harbour.

“The first step should be to establish the right number of the right sort of people to liaise with landowners in preparing these plans, and a realistic time frame to complete them. There are some great people at the Northland Regional Council who can do this, but not enough of them.

Chartered buses from Dargaville and Whangarei are heading to Auckland next Friday, July 17, setting up a hikoi protest march against plans to site a landfill for the city’s rubbish in the Dome Valley.

Ngati Whatua has joined forces with the Fight The Tip movement for the hikoi, which will proceed from Albert Park to Aotea Square at 11am, following speeches and presentations.

Auckland's Waste Management Ltd, a Chinese-owned company, has applied for resource consent to dump in the Dome Valley on land that is a catchment area for the Hoteo River that feeds into Kaipara Harbour.

FTT and Ngati Whatua say a breach at the landfill could devastate the waterway. They believe their case has now been reinforced by the government's recent $100 million grant towards harbour restoration.

“Together, we will make it known in no

uncertain terms that a dump in Dome Valley is out of bounds,” said FTT administrator, Michelle Carmichael.

Otamatea Poetry Cafe Headed for the racetrack u by Ann van Engelen

The year seven students at Otamatea College finished last term by presenting a Poetry Cafe as an opportunity to showcase their study of the subject during lockdown.

The horses are wooden, they’ve got wheels instead of horseshoes, and the action takes place indoors instead of out on a grassy track. Nevertheless, Dargaville Whanau Focus Centre’s ‘night at the races’ fundraiser provides all the thrills and spills of real equestrian competition, and all for a worthy cause.

The group of organisations and advocacy services who share an office building in downtown Victoria Street have weathered the Covid-19 scare and are now looking to a future where they can better assist the public, say organisers of the fun event. With representatives from groups as varied as Alzheimer’s support, elder abuse prevention, youth mentoring services and many more, the Whanau Focus Centre is a valuable community resource, which remains largely charitably funded.

That’s a good excuse to dust off the old ‘Ascot’ wear, pin on a fascinator and come along to ‘bet’ on some painted wooden thoroughbreds when ‘a night at the races’ kicks off on July 25 at 6pm. Tickets cost $50 and include a succulent meal, as well as the chance to be a ‘jockey’ own a ‘racehorse’ or take a punt on who will win. All funds raised will go towards keeping the Whanau Focus Centre active in the community. Tickets are available from the Centre, 61 Victoria Street, or by calling 021 260 6769.

“Lockdown made studying very different from what we had expected, and they all did extremely well under the circumstances. We also opened up the classrooms for visitors to see what the students have been learning. It gave them the opportunity to see first hand what we get up to at school.

“It takes a community to help keep people on the path to health and free from addiction.” That’s the firm belief of Helena McGee and the team at Whakamana Tangata, a ‘grass roots’, not-forprofit drug-free initiative tackling the loneliness and isolation that can come after making a clean break with ‘toxic’ habits.

The general election is coming soon, a chance to form a new government under the auspices of MMP. As candidates vie for position and put forward their policies, one local group have come to the fore in supporting impartial, reasoned political debate.

The organisation operates offices throughout the north and works from a ‘community up’ model rather than a structure imposed by law enforcement or the courts. It means providing non-judgmental help and to support those who have been through rehab programmes or other courses to break free of alcohol or meth, and it’s working.

With only a brief lead-in period, a noho marae event (weekend stay-over at a drug and liquor free local marae) in Dargaville attracted 50 people keen to share their stories with each other or talk openly about the problems they face with addiction. That’s the first step toward a healthier life, says Helena, who knows from first-hand experience that it’s possible to turn one’s course around.

“Our participants had fun, talked, laughed and learned,” she says of the

two-day experience. “We all pitched in and helped to make the food, prepare a hangi, and it was our responsibility to run the event. That kind of responsibility and being together with other people who are clean and sober makes people feel self-worth. It makes them feel less isolated.”

The noho marae programme also included a trip to the coast to meet with local Glinks Gully kaitiaki, who explained the significance, life cycle and fisheries of the coast’s famous shellfish beds.

Learning about nature and culture was a highlight for many participants. Next on the list for Whakamana Tangata is the acquisition of a permanent office to liaise with appropriate agencies and help find the right support for those keen to leave addiction and its troubles behind. ¢

Grey Power, themselves an apolitical and nonpartisan organisation, has long sought to promote the rights of the older person through political awareness.

This campaign season they have hosted three Dargaville-based question and answer sessions already, inviting Willow-Jean Prime of Labour, Matt King of National and recently Shane Jones of New Zealand First to take the stage and face the public.

Wood Street Community Workshop We have been working closely with the Mangawhai Business Association and community, testing layout and design through a temporary summer trial and workshops to create a more people-friendly Wood Street. An Innovating Streets grant from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency means that we can continue collaborating with the Mangawhai community, testing and finetuning further improvements. This progressive co-design approach is called ‘tactical urbanism’. The interim design and community collaboration will inform a future permanent upgrade.

The first design workshop will be held on Saturday 18 July at 10.00am-12.00 noon at the Mangawhai Club. Everyone is welcome, please bring your ideas and an openness to work with others.

The latest from the Kaipara Kai Hub The Kaipara Kai Hub provides on-the-ground support that enables land to be used to its best potential. Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot and sculpture artist Sue Dinkelacker has established a club for people who have used or been rescued by the emergency services helicopters.

The Dargaville Senior Housie will be underway again on the third Monday of every month at the Dargaville Bowling Club.

“Housie for Seniors began around 2009 as a way to celebrate international day of the older person when I was involved in community wellness for older adults,” says returning organiser Bev Hart.

“Some ladies wanted to have it on a monthly basis, and it has been going ever since. The bowling club allows us to use their premises for a minimal cost to help provide the older community members the opportunity to socialise.

“We usually have a group of 50 people coming along as it is a great event for them to get out of the house and interact with others. Some come and don’t chat much but simply enjoy the day.

“All the money that we collect from card purchases is used to buy prizes as well as the oversized cards, which

we use to make it easier and any other incidentals. For the time being we won’t be having afternoon tea due to being careful regarding the current Covid situation.”

Senior Housie resumes on Monday, July 20 starting at 1pm with the call starting at 1.30pm.

“It is a lot of fun, and people can play for as little as $5, enabling people to participate in the whole afternoon with nine calls on a day.

“The numbers are called out slowly to cater for the various age groups and individual needs.

The Dargaville Scouts discovered online meetings were extremely successful during lockdown and are now looking forward to reconnecting in person at the beginning of the next school term.

While Covid disrupted rugby centennial celebrations here in Northland, progress was nevertheless made at the Te Kopuru club, with powerful new floodlights allowing for more time on the pitch. Now a sponsors day, celebrated on July 18, gives a chance to say thanks to those who have made a long history of sports possible there.

“We had to be very creative in our thinking and Scouting NZ did an amazing job providing free programmes for anybody who needed ideas to keep their children motivated,” says Dargaville group leader Dianne McEwing.

“Meeting online was an awesome experience for everyone, including Scout leaders across the world and played games and other activities.”

Focussing on connection, the Dargaville Cub section travelled the world via the internet looking at sculptures and bridges.

Wandering strays, unwanted puppies and neglected, unloved dogs are all a product of canine overpopulation.

That’s why organisations as varied as the SPCA, vet’s association, the police, council and animal welfare groups all strongly suggest you neuter or desex your family pet, and don’t consider buying dogs from back yard breeders.

With rescue shelters full, organisations like North Auckland Dog Rescue relies on grants to keep up its good work, trying to rehabilitate and rehome canines with loving families.

It’s an app-controlled world we live in, here in 2020. With everything in your home able to be automated and accessed via your smartphone, from ovens to heat pumps to lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners, it’s no surprise that security systems are also taking the fully digital path.

At the most affordable end of the spectrum, this can mean things like ‘laser tripwire’ alarms at your gate sending a ping to your phone to tell you people have arrived on the property. It also means an upsurge in the number of people utilising self-install, wireless camera packages, which can deliver a relatively crisp view of any intruders, provided they are placed in the right areas.

Pro security installers and the police have been left befuddled by householders who install such cameras in places where they are ‘unobtrusive’ to the decor but can only see totally unimportant views of the home. A glimpse of one leg or a single hand

might not be all the police need to make a case.

These camera systems also send all their data to cloud storage; a bonus, as the potentially incriminating film, is not on-site for burglars to smash up or erase. It also means a system only as good as your home’s bandwidth.

Even the ‘winterless’ north can produce some stunning scenes of frost and ice when the temperature plummets, with the alltime record going to the peak of Mt Tutamoe, where the winter of 2011 brought a chilly five centimetres of snow.

That’s chillingly cold, especially when you have to get up and about to attend to farming chores on a sub-zero morning. However, there are people working in agriculture all over the world who wake up to much worse, including temperatures so icy that a cup of boiling water thrown into the air turns to snow before it hits the ground.

In New Zealand, the southern town of Ophir takes the prize for the coldest settlement, with a microclimate dominated by clear skies, high altitude and a natural ‘air dam’ of hills that traps in the cold. They’ve recorded -21 degrees Celsius there in winter, making for a situation nearly three times colder than any found locally.

It pales in comparison to the coldest continually inhabited farming settlement in America.

First set up as a fuel station for aircraft after the first world war, and adjacent to a Native North American village, Snag in the Yukon Territory recorded a temperature of -63 Celsius

back in 1947. The record has stood ever since, and was put down to a particularly fierce blizzard out of the north getting trapped by the valley in which the settlement lies.

Even these extreme conditions must be considered a day at the beach for the ultimate cold-weather farmers, however.

If you like reindeer milk and ice fishing, the town of Oymyakon might be the place to visit.

Don’t turn off your car’s engine though; even snowmobiles have to be heated with a blowtorch to start in the winters here.

Vodka freezes in the bottle, plumbing is an impossibility, and the record winter low is -96 degrees Celsius. It’s little surprise that this town was built around a hot spring, the only place where old-time reindeer herders could find running water for their livestock in pre-industrial times.

Right now, as we approach the middle of winter, the days in Oymyakon are 21 hours long. In December, they

Take a look at a serious American farmer’s pickup truck, and you’ll notice a lot of horizontal steel between those chrome bumpers. Load capacity is taken very seriously in the US, and it’s the same on Kiwi farms, where the ability to carry all the gear for a big job is of paramount importance.

Sometimes, of course, a full-sized ute can’t go where a more nimble, off-road focussed side-by-side machine can. It doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice loadbearing capacity for more grip and grunt in the mud. Winter rain, icy roads, cold starts — it’s time to give your vehicle the once over to ensure that everything is shipshape. Even if it’s got a current WOF, it’s the driver’s duty of care to make sure every system is working at full capacity when nature throws a winter tantrum.

Tyres — Check the tread depth with the side of a coin. The edge of the metal should disappear into the grooves until it’s right up to the picture of the Queen.

Anything less might not eject standing water on the road or deal with debris that can cause punctures. Also, take a close look at the inside edge of your tyre. Grab a torch and check for telltale signs like worn patches, smooth rubber or wires showing through where many cars have hidden tyre damage. If in doubt, chuck it out, and get new ones.

Electrics — There’s no more important time of the year to have bright and visible lights, indicators and stop lights. Get a mate to check their operation while you’re in the driver’s seat, and do the same for any trailers you wish to use during winter.

Run your wipers after a spray with the garden hose; the water should be removed without a film forming or patches left wet. While you’re at it, it might be a good opportunity to check the battery. If you don’t have a battery tester, trickle charger or jump-start kit, invest to ensure you never get caught on the side of the road in the rain with no ‘spark’.

Rust and panel damage — Wet conditions really suit rust, which can begin as tiny bubbles under the paint and grow to compromise the safety of important hinges and pillars. Cracked or damaged plastics can also let in water where it shouldn’t go, playing havoc with electrics. Get your panelbeater or bodywork specialist to handle both these issues before they render a good vehicle worthless.

Brakes, suspension and shocks — Brakes especially need to be right up to

the task on wet and slippery roads, but their backup team of shock absorbers and the bushings, which allow all those suspension parts to work together need to be on form as well. Give your car a solid push on each corner to check the ‘bounce’ left in your shocks. It should feel springy but solid, not wobbly or too stiff. Brakes make a distinctive scraping metal noise when they are worn down; as soon as you hear that rasp, head for your mechanic. ¢
