p Dargaville’s Western Sharks rugby team has achieved a place in the grand finals of the Northland Premier Rugby Competition after a triumphant 33–19 win over Kamo on Saturday. “A huge amount of the success has come from the passion and dedication provided by the team coaches Peter Hugo, Matt Matich, Max McCahon and Donal McNamara, inspirational captain Coree Te Whata-Colley and managers Mason Foster, Hamish Watson and David Paton,” says Sharks club spokesperson Paul Sorensen. This is the third season since Western Sharks and Kaihu combined their resources to give players a pathway to success and competition on a higher level. Now the team is headed for a finals match-up against Mid Northern at Whangārei’s Semenoff Stadium this weekend. The call is out for local fans to come and support their team.

Fight the Tip held a packed meeting of 400 people in the Wellsford Community Centre last Saturday supported by Ngāti Whātua and Kaipara iwi, Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith as well as other groups and individuals. All are fearful of a pollution threat to the wider Kaipara Harbour from the Chineseowned Waste Management Ltd plan.
Iwi have fought the proposal alongside FTT for four years, including a rāhui on the tip site and a hīkoi to Auckland. Tinopai kaumātua, Mikaera Miru, told the gathering that the issue has highlighted “a huge gulf between tangata whenua and the Crown. “The marginalisation that is going on for iwi is a huge problem at the headwaters
of any contact and demonstrates the gulf between us. “If we had a seat at the table, instead of being relegated to being under the table, we would not be where we are today,” he told the gathering.
